Lauren Tarshis often wonders how she came to spend most of her waking moments thinking about disasters, as the author of the children's historical fiction series "I Survived." Each book takes readers into the heart of history's most thrilling and terrifying events, including the sinking of the Titanic, the Shark Attacks of 1916, Hurricane Katrina, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the San Francisco earthquake, 9/11, and the Battle of Gettysburg. Writing these books often makes her feel very nervous, as though at any moment a volcano could erupt right outside her window. Then again, she has learned a thing or two about avoiding being eaten by a shark.
Lauren is also the author of the the award-winning Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree and its sequel, Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell in Love.

I knew we had so many fires around the world in the last few years but, wow, unbelieveable how many. So many acres in California alone were burned because of wildfires. It used to be that firefighters would try to put out all the fires, but they came to realize that fires are good for forests. It gets rid of unhealthy trees and brush and makes way for new healthy growth to improve the areas. A lot of the time humans are to blame for the fires, but nature has started them too. Just so fascinating.

I haven't read an I Survived book before (the graphic novels or the chapter books) so I thought with a new one coming out, it might be a good time to try them out! I definitely enjoyed this. It was very fast-paced and the artwork was great, with bright, vivid colors that will keep kids interested.

Josh and Holly are pretty tough kids. Showing positivity despite the tragedies that befell their dads, on top of getting caught in a wildfire? Tough indeed.

These drawings are elaborate and I loved how heartfelt Lauren Tarshis is, and though she’s not afraid to have some really tough and hard conversations
