Warlock #3

Warlock: Book 3

Rate this book
After exposing a genocidal plot, fighting the Patriarchy, and throwing a vampire into a wall, I thought I was done with the weird stuff - silly warlock.

Vernal break is over, and I’m back at Willowmere College with more witches in my coven, stronger magic, and a growing reputation as the warlock nobody saw coming.

Too bad the Witches Council thinks I’m too dangerous to let roam free.

Now I’m facing questions I don’t know how to answer—about my lineage, my power, and a past I didn’t even know I had.

My coven is stronger than ever, but that just paints a bigger target on our backs. Some Families want to bind me. Some still want me dead. And someone's seeking to unleash an ancient power, long sealed in shadow and bringing only war, death, and madness in its wake.

This semester, surviving midterms might be the least of my problems.

Book 3 continues the harem/magic school series with more danger, deeper bonds, and a coven that won’t back down.

Strong Continuation of a Fun Series

It’s clear to anyone who has read the first two Warlock books that the series takes heavy inspiration from Harry Potter. The first book even featured a (not-so) subtle nod to the Wizarding World practically every other chapter. I don’t think that’s a bad thing as there’s plenty of originality here too. That said, one thing the Harry Potter series does exceptionally well is giving each book its own distinct, novel-specific plot, and I think this series would benefit from adopting a similar approach.

The Warlock series remains exceptionally well written, with distinct, fully realised characters and relationships that carry real emotional weight. The world-building is deep and satisfying. All the ingredients for a great story are here and masterfully executed, it’s just the overarching structure that feels a little loose and keeps this from perfection. This is the most slice-of-life entry so far. That’s not necessarily a criticism... The world the author has built is both engaging and immersive, but a more prominent, high-stakes plot could elevate this and the previous entry to a five-star read.

If I sound overly critical, it’s only because I feel that I have glimpsed greatness in these books, and I want to see that potential fully realised in future instalments. These characters deserve to be part of a gripping, unforgettable story.

This book felt rushed and had a ton of filler content. It was also icky and could totally tell a guy wrote this. It was such a disappointment. I liked the first two books but this one just fell flat.

I really liked this installment of the series! There wasn't a ton of action but thats okay because we were thrown a ton of information that I felt like we really needed! I loved seeing more incorporation of the Roma and seeing Rachel brought in and more stuff with the Coven. I think the author tried to tone down the spice in this one too.

The MC drags this down a bit, as he is shown too frequently to not know what the fuck is going on. A lot of relationship dynamics in the coven, but it was taken seriously, so I feel it was overall well executed.

Obviously there are 9 or so more women to round out the coven, so I can't imagine that this is the end of this. On the strength of this one I'll give book 4 a go and see how long this story holds my attention.

So many words for so little done

The only reason I didn’t rate this book lower is the previous 2 were good. This installment was a massive disappointment. First, only about 15% of this book is relevant. The rest is just fluffed up filler for word count. The whole thing with the cottage was just completely pointless and no one cares that they’re renovating it or the materials used. There was more information given on the age/materials in their cottage than the entirety of the conflict at the end!

Second, Noah does basically no magic. The only thing he really uses is his “strength” so the MC has become nothing more than “me lift, me catch, me smash”! This is really pathetic for some supposedly strong warlock.

Third, THEY’RE FREAKING ADULTS, but the school principal keeps treating him like a sex offender and a child by making him swear stupid oaths. Seeing how these people treat their kids and such, it’s no wonder they keep almost dying out.

Finally, at the rate of book releases and progress, it’s going to be a decade in real life before the damn coven is even filled. Not counting the bs the author keeps trying to throw in for “drama”. This is starting to come across as a crappy CW teenage drama. We’re one rowboat away from magical Dawsons Creek.

Between the excellent introduction and the ensuing fight scene at the end of the book, there are 550 pages of utter emptiness. Harem management, harem planning, shopping, plumbing, cuddling, partying, and, most importantly, insightful reflections on the placement of an electrical outlet.
At the end, in the afterword, the author complains about having written 500,000 words for Noah's first year of school. He initially intended to write less. It remains to be seen who convinced him to write more, then find a box of matches, and light the bonfire.
If you enjoyed the first two installments for their world-building and main plot, my advice would be to skip this one.

I love this series!

The characters are great! My favorite so far is Sam. She is so relatable and has something funny to say to just about everything. I also enjoy the character growth of Cassandra in this book. It was powerful. I hope this series continues for a long time. My favorite so far!

This was one really good warlock book. It wasn't sleazy like the others.

These warlock books are getting really interesting. Daniel Kensington this time has written a good story with a lot of action and introduced a plethora of characters. The Romani and the faculty of the school, the warlock of the schools coven, and finally everybody getting to be of age and eligible to become a witch. I suppose the next book must be marking quite a few girls if Noah Ash nee blackwood can put up with it.

This was another really strong entry into this series.

The MC remains consistent. At times clueless due to his lack of growing up with the witch families, which can add quite a bit of humor to things, he still manages to stumble his way to successes. Some of the misunderstandings are comical, such as a punishment gone a little overboard without intent. I like the way he goes about things, despite the chaos his harem surrounds him with.

The harem officially grows by one in this book, but two more are definitely joining in the next book by all appearances. The one that joined in book two finally finds some balance after a lot of headaches for herself, the harem, and the MC. It was actually refreshing to see a harem member struggle with finding her place in a harem, and in the end, it was deftly handled by the author.

I look forward to the events in the next book. I'm sure it will again be a doozy.

These books are so freaking good. I love the audio books best great narration backing up a great story
These books technically fall under harem genre but that is incidental to the great story. Nothing forced to add spicy but just as a natural progression of the story.

So Noah has his coven growing. Questions and accusations coming from the witches council.
How to add Rachel to the coven with the oath not to add more witches. How in integrate Cassandra?
all things that progress in this next chapter. Bummed it was over so fast I can not wait for the next book.

The Warlock series continues, and I'll grant the titles aren't really creative. But that's a very minor point.

Noah is trying to settle in at his new school, adjust to the fact that he's a warlock, that magic is real, that he's supposed to form a coven of 13 witches, and sleep regularly with all of them. That could easily be a simple way to just have lots of sex scenes, but the author doesn't go that route.

There is character depth and some really interesting world building going on here. Noah's coven grows, they face new challenges, and there's a lot of dealing with various emotional issues as they incorporate new women into the group and make sure everyone's as happy as possible.

There are new threats, more on Felicity's tragic past, developments with Morgan as they wait for her to get out of the foster care system, and several surprises along the way.

I'm enjoying this series, and am frequently pleasantly surprised by the detail and depth of the characters and the world. I devoured this book within days of it coming out, and I'll be looking forward to the next one.

If you like good urban fantasy with a healthy side of sex and some interesting plots and characters, you might want to check the series out.

A good continuation of the series. The focus of this series is more about the relationships. I would have liked a little more on the magic system especially since the group is in a school setting but again, the focus is on the relationships and the goddess. The witches have lost their way a little bit. They are more worried about power and how to accrue more of it. The lives and wants of the individual witches are not even a concern. The aspects of the goddess are not happy with the current situation, and they love what Noah is doing with his coven mates. Noah has to learn how to deal with the many different personalities from the women in his coven while also learning how to deal with the other witch families. He has the problem of having too many witches coming after him to try and mark him and at the same time not being able to negotiate for the women he actually wants in his coven. Overall, I enjoy this series. They are going to have to pick things up a little bit. It seems like Noah only adds one person to his coven in every book and since he needs 13 witches to form a coven, this could be a VERY long series if they don't at least double up once in a while.

Wow

I am amazed with every book of this series. The world building is TIGHT. I’ve thought about this review a lot, and I can honestly say it’s some of the best righting I’ve read as an adult.

Most harem lit reviews claim that the author created “unique” female characters. Please. They all pale compared to Noah’s girls. You truly find yourself having markedly different reactions to these characters (abject fear in Rachel’s case. EXTREME wariness in Sam’s).

The only concern I have is with Sam’s sexual orientation. I feel like that was a gun introduced into the story, but never went off. Something just doesn’t ring true there.

Noah, of course, is the true fantasy character. All men aspire to be him, and all women want to be WITH him. And why not? I don’t read these stories to become more literate - I have historical biographies for that - I read them to escape from a world of hate and evil that’s totally devoid of the LOVE shown in these books.

I reread the series every time a new book comes out, and I’m already waiting desperately for the next.

Warlock: Book Three continues the harem progression fantasy series with the same humorous, lighthearted tone fans will recognize from the earlier books. The humor still lands, though it often drifts into the juvenile side of things, which may or may not work for every reader.

Compared to the first two books, which were packed with action and moved at a breakneck pace, this installment feels slower. Large sections seemed like filler, with too much focus on interpersonal relationship drama. While relationship conflict can add depth in a romance novel, here it felt somewhat out of place and bogged down the story.

That said, the book was still entertaining overall. The characters and world remain engaging enough to keep me reading, and even with the slower pacing, I enjoyed spending more time in the setting. Despite my criticisms, I’m invested enough that I’ll definitely continue with the series to see where it goes.

Love love love this series!!!! When's the next one coming out???

This is one of the best series I've read in a long long time. I'm rather picky about fantasy. And too often in haremlit, the author throws in spicy content and writes it like a thirteen year old who just discovered certain sites containing adult content. Not so with Kensington. The relationships feel natural, the stakes feel real. You actually care about the different characters. I didn't think he'd get me to like Cassandra. Now I love her character and the dynamic she brings. Sam's still my favorite though. The world building is very well done. i don't have enough good things to say about this series. Mr. Kensington, please get the next one done ASAP.

Another strong addition to the series. Great dialogue, amazing magic-world building and memorable characters.
A bit much slice-of-life around the 60-80% mark. Not that I have much of a problem with that, since it was written pretty well, but it did feel a little … episodic. There wasn’t really an overarching plot at that point, but just different episodes of a warlocks life in a magical school.
The climax of the book also wasn’t my favorite since it wasn’t really a fight, but more a win-by-the-power-of-love. Again not really a flaw, since the author even explained why the power of love saved the day, but I just prefer a bit fighting in these kinds of books.

Overall I‘d recommend Warlock 3 to everyone that has enjoyed the previous 2.

Even better than the last

Some stories are slow burns, and others are like wildfires. And I mean this in the sense of the speed with which I read them. When I saw that this book was out I dropped my current stories and this became the sole focus. So entertaining that I didn't realize it was after midnight.
I love the at times SoL of this series and how every character has such a depth of personality. The slow pace of coven addition is also welcomed as it makes each member more real and valued. I can't wait to see where this series goes as each book adds new plot elements and avenues it could progress.
Now of only we could get them that much faster...

Amazing third book! So well written.

I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book. When it released, I read through the first two books again to make sure I remembered everything and it was such a pleasure. The characters development and depth is incredible. You really care about them and enjoy learning more about them. The world building is so well done with great pacing and story arcs. The ending is not a cliff hanger but definitely leaves you wanting more. I really appreciate the time and effort that went into writing and editing these books. I just finished the third book on KU and am heading over to buy the entire series for my permanent library.

Best In Genre 5+🌟

This is truly an outstanding series. The storyline is engrossing, the writing is excellent, the fantasy world is sufficient, but it is the depth of the characters and their development that makes this series exceptional! Dialogue is very well done with many laugh out loud moments throughout. The erotic scenes are explicit but well written, and complement the storyline. However, the series is so well written that (IMO) it could be abridged to an outstanding PG13 Fantasy series! Hopefully there will be many more books in the series. In the meantime, I'll have to content myself with rereading those written to date, something I rarely do!👏👏🇦🇱

Good Read

I was really looking forward to this next book in the continuation of the series, but was disappointed in a few ways. It was enjoyable to read, but was nowhere near as exciting or as sexually charged as the two before. There was too much superfluous stuff, like about droning on about the shopping trip. It needed to be more fast paced, with more action with him and the ladies. The book especially wasn't pricey enough. It felt like you were dancing around being sexually explicit and not showing how the can physically please each other with their passion and lust. I really hope the next book gets more in depth into the lust and the adventure.

Perfectly executed

I'm sorry but this series has the perfect level of humor, tension, and sexual teasing that will make anyone flip out and scramble to snag more copies. I am now sad that I need to wait for book 4 after seeing a funny dnd 5e game(wish it was pathfinder or 3.5e instead cause more books more shenanigans) and now we got 2 mysteries, a possible second recurring villain and let's not forget the two witches that are waiting to be bound to their favorite guy. I just hope book 4 hits us with as much of a random curveball as each book has done. 10/10 characters, growth and plot development. Kinda sad he can't bind monster gals but hey, can't get it all :D

Oh hell yes!

This third entry in the series greatly expands the universe that the author is working with. Rom and Fae and a dive into Witch Family Politics -- many things get fleshed out. The book is about as long as the first two books combined. Noah is working hard at integrating Cassandra well into the coven and Rachel is an absolute delight. (As is her grandmother).

The horrifying backstory on Felicity was powerful. The final battle with the Cait Fae was intense.

There are many ways the next book can go, and I greatly look forward to reading it.

It seems that a lot of people are reading the book for the destination rather than the journey. The journey is how the main character learns to manage a coven as it grows. This was a great addition to the series. I'm glad to just live in this world for the time that the story went on and I can't wait to read more of it. The MC and the supporting characters are great. Each with their own unique personality and this "filler content" (as other people put it) really lets you build your understanding of them. If you liked the first two books, you'll continue to enjoy this series.

A good continuation

Book one was excellent. And I honestly feel Sam, Rachael and Cassandra are all pretty well thus far. Obviously Sam has had the most development, but the others are coming along. I would like to see our MC maybe learn a few decent spells on his own though, as honestly he just feels super weak for book three. I understand thats kinda Canon, because he's so new. But I hope he just atleast one or two useful things in the next book. Wither way, hope it comes out soon

Love this series, loved this book

I was anxiously awaiting the day Warlock 3 dropped and when it did, I sat down to start and I've barely put it down until I finished. I put every other book on hold. Yeah, there's some spice, but Goddess, this story is just so captivating. I'm here for every bit of the plot and the spicy scenes are just a bonus. I can't wait for Book 4 and Warlock is definitely on my list of favorite Amazon reads, and that's a pretty exclusive list.

Look, I'm going to acknowledge that this whole genre is kind of problematic when it comes to gender and sexuality. This series isn't entirely unproblematic, but it makes a clear effort to treat its characters as characters and that counts for a lot to me.

That being said, I'm enjoying this series immensely. It's sweet, comedic, and frequently raunchy. I highly recommend it if you're even tangentially interested in this sort of thing.

Great read

Well paced book that takes this 3rd chapter a little further down the road. Character development is good, story line is great and gratuitous sex held to a minimum. Not that I don't like gratuitous sex. I enjoyed the plot development with the bread crumbs at appropriate intervals. As for the story itself, love the premise, and am looking forward to the next additions to Noah's coven.

Tremendous writing

The depth of the characters personality is clearly expressed and given form by the author through their actions and dialogue. The plot is unique and well balanced. I really appreciate how the author did not spend a lot of time with the actual dirty deeds being dealt with, but rather spent the majority of the time developing and strengthening the personalities of the numerous characters! Wonderful fun. Bring on Book 4!

Interesting storyline, but a bit too much mundane life vs conflict.

The MC faces down a tribunal as he expands his coven/harem. Meanwhile, sinister fae forces are at work. The final confrontation of the fae and his accomplice was worth waiting for, but the epilogue was a sleeping potion for a non-gamer.

While the action and intrigue were spaced out, the mundane life material, festivals, studying, home improvements etc felt a bit overdone.

Perfection

This series blows me away with every new addition. The growth of the coven and the group dynamic is organic and smooth. There is no forcing new issues or topics. No jamming romance or accidents down your throat like most others do. A perfect phrase for this book "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast".
I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. Thank you for this incredible addition to the series.
