Lizbeth Rose and Felicia as well as brothers Eli and Peter, are reunited in Texoma only to break apart before the Wizard’s Ball held in San Diego, which will determine all their fates.
Following the murderous events of the “gripping…thrill-ride” (Karin Slaughter) Serpent of Heaven, Lizbeth Rose is awaiting the arrival of her sister Felicia and her husband’s younger brother Eli in Texoma. Both needed to leave the seat of the Holy Russian Empire in San Diego after Felicia’s burgeoning wizardly power in death magic became the reason for kidnapping and assassination attempts from her mother’s family of high-powered wizards in Mexico.
Yet bad news has traveled ahead of them, as Eli is called back to San Diego, taking Peter along with him, splitting them apart in more ways than one as their enemies’ plans for revenge come to fruition. In this fifth installment in the beloved and bestselling Gunnie Rose series, #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Charlaine Harris has crafted a family drama of murderous and magical thrills.
Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.
Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.
When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.
A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.
After Felicia has her own separate adventure in the previous book, The Serpent in Heaven, now she and Peter have traveled to spend the summer with her beloved big sister and his big brother in the wilder, unrefined region of Texoma. Naturally, the four end up on a wild emotional ride of an adventure instead of the sweet and staid family reunion. Charlaine Harris’ Gunnie Rose series remains strong and riveting through to this fifth installment.
All the Dead Shall Weep is indeed book five in the Gunnie Rose series set in an Alternate History fractured US where wizards and witches meet wild west. The series installments are an ongoing series plot that makes them best read or listened to in order.
All the Dead Shall Weep is told in alternating points of view between the two sisters, Felicia and Lizbeth. For the first time, the pair of them will be spending good, quality time getting to know each other and working through a separate past history and what their most recent exploits have been. But, instead of Felicia finding her sister living the happily ever after life with Eli, she finds them distant and struggling after Lizbeth’s miscarriage and Lizbeth’s dread that Eli not only was unaffected by the baby’s death, but wishing he wasn’t married to her because she’s not good enough. Felicia will stand by her sister, but also thinks Lizbeth’s loss has skewed her emotions and mind. Then a surprise attack and a telegram led to the sisters and brothers separate and wondering if they will ever come back together. Lizbeth wants distraction from Eli’s departure, her grief, and her feelings of inadequacy. She gets that ten fold when someone comes after her and Felicia while Felicia gets bombarded by eager witches and wizards promoting themselves for her consideration for the ‘marriage mart’ that the not so distant future Wizard’s Ball will offer.
In case, one gets the idea that Lizbeth is this uber strong and skilled female hero, her vulnerable side is really tested in this one. Charlaine Harris carefully handled Lizbeth’s loss and miscarriage and even how that can affect both parents. Like Felicia, I understood that Lizbeth and Eli really needed to talk though they were both avoiding each other and Eli was doing his typical thing of keeping secrets from Lizbeth “for her own good” sort of thing.
I adored seeing her and Felicia have a strong amount of sisterly bonding. Lizbeth is just as proud and respectful of Felicia as Felicia is of her though I was glad to see they are written with obvious differences in personality and ways of thinking. Felicia’s death magic is scary strong and makes most people even other wizard’s pause just as Lizbeth’s shooting gives others a healthy respect for her. Yet, in spite of the sisters’ strengths, a ruthless, mysterious player or players is out to get them. I love the mystery and intrigue that paired with the personal and relationship growth in All the Dead Shall Weep.
I’ve been borrowing these through the library and had to go back and forth between two different audio editions. Both are really good. This time, I immersed in the story with the Graphic Audio all star cast, sound effects, and music making it a vivid story reel in my imagination.
Alas, I am caught up and must impatiently wait for the next series installment. There are only five right now and the perfect time for others to jump on board for the fabulous Gunnie Rose series.
My full review will post at The Reading Frenzy 12.2.25.
