This is an informative and easy to read book with many illustrations. It is a great first book if recently diagnosed, but the research is progressing at such a fast rate that many things they discuss as new are the current standard of care and are only briefly mentioned such as immunotherapy and TKI inhibitors used separately or in combination. Dual immunotherapy agents are also now a current standard of care and only mentioned as in clinical trials in this book. So for advanced treatment options for metastatic stage IV this is not the best book.

This is a straightforward, easy to read resource for anyone facing or with a loved one facing a kidney cancer diagnosis. There are so many varying reports on the Internet, conflicting information is all over the place. I felt like this book presented excellent, factual information and explained things in a way that make sense, even if you don’t have a medical background. The book does not sugarcoat things, and lays out concise statistics for stage IV cancer, while also providing resources for individualized calculation of reoccurrence likelihood.

The third edition of the book is copyrighted in 2019 and I am reading it in 2021. This is important to know because there are a number of life extending treatments on the horizon at this time for stage IV and clinical trials for immunotherapy used prophylactically in stage 2/3. Hopefully if you are reading this review later, some of these treatments have become standard practice. This book is great starting place to begin learning more.
