The Autism Discussion Page blue book focuses on the core challenges associated with autism (cognitive, sensory, social, and emotional) and provides concise, accessible information and simple tools for supporting children with these vulnerabilities. Based on posts on the popular online community page and organised by subject for ease of reference, this book offers an excellent understanding of how children with autism process and experience the world and effective strategies for coping with the challenges.
This is a ground breaking book for anybody who parents, cares for or teaches a child, teenager or even a young adult with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Absolutely brilliant book, and with Autism diagnosis being on the increase worldwide including a huge spike in girls and women being diagnosed now it could not be more needed or timely.
I have Aspergers Syndrome and was diagnosed as an adult at age 41, I have a teenage son with Aspergers and work as a Job Coach/Trainer and Advocate for adults on the Autism Spectrum, I have studied in the field also. Why do I share this? Well, because it's always interesting to read books about Autism when you have Autism, you can pretty quickly weed out the good from the bad. We are tough critics! This book is in the top of the line category.
I have been a fan of the author's Facebook page for a long time, this book has come from many requests from followers, parents, carers who have asked for all of the information and advice that goes on Facebook to be in a book format for easy reference. It's a book you can read cover to cover, dip into or just search for what you are looking for.
Bill writes really clearly, no "psychology speak" that baffles the average reader here, it's extremely easy to absorb and understand. He covers a range of important topics surrounding the support and understanding of children with Autism.
I applaud Bill for his positive approach to listening to, and entering into the world of the Autistic Child, this book represents what most Autistic adults feel - that we don't want to be changed, we just want to be understood. Children are no different. Autism means the brain is wired differently, like picking up a different radio station to others, but it's a world that can teach so much if you are willing to listen.
I have read LOTS of books on Autism Spectrum Disorders most of them are not really that helpful, I wish I had this book in my hands when my son was very young and I was scrambling to find meaningful and practical information on how to understand and help him. This book is GOLD, pure GOLD for parents of children with Autism. I can't recommend it enough.
It really is a Toolbox as the title says, bits and pieces of information on everything you need to know including understanding sensory issues, obsessive and focused interests, entering alongside your Autistic child in their world and so much more. Excellently written to make it so much easier for you.
Bill has perceptively entered the world of those with Autism and so powerfully supports a positive experience for parent and child. Some books on Autism can be bleak and depressing in their focus but not this one. Lots of positives and encouragement for those in need.
I will be happily promoting this book within the Autism community that I am part of, I know many parents who would get huge value from this well put together and written book that actually may make a different rather than just being words on paper. Grab it, read it, put it into action.
Remember, Autism - different not less.
I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful handbook that I use regularly to understand our daughter’s behavior and improve my parenting skills. I really can’t recommend these books highly enough. Great resources (I have the blue and green cover books) that have helped me grow closer to our daughter by interpreting her world to me. I just ordered the brown cover book because I’m eager for Mr. Nason’s expertise in those topics. Most readable and practical books I’ve found for parents yet.
You've just found a practical and caring Christmas gift for a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or anyone who loves a child with Autism. The Autism Discussion Page on the Core Challenges of Autism: A Toolbox for Helping Children with Autism Feel Safe, Accepted and Competent by Bill Nason (Jessica Kingsley Publishers), long title, but the book itself is easy to follow and wonder to read - just needs some wrapping paper (tree cruelty-free please). This book is a gift on so many levels. The first thing you feel when you open the book is that the author, Bill Nason not only cares deeply about the subject and those with Autism, but he knows the subject, in depth. There are many people out there that appear to be cashing in on Autism, Bill Nason’s Facebook projects, books, etc. are filled with truth, kindness, and compassion. I’m sure he’s making money as well, but I find it difficult to believe it’s his sole purpose. The author wants children with Autism to reach their full potential, that is clear in every word. This book is page after page after page of 'aha' moments. Step by step, Nason helps us not only understand but gives appropriate methods to help those with the sensory, social, emotional, and cognitive challenges of Autism. I received this digital copy from Netgalley.com for the low price of an honest review. It took me a long time to read, not because it was difficult, but because I kept stopping to take notes so I wouldn’t forget. This book focuses on Core Challenges which are so important, but I encourage you to read The Autism Discussion Page on Anxiety, Behavior, School and Parenting Strategies: A Toolbox for Helping Children with Autism Feel Safe, Accepted and Competent as well, and of course, visit https://www.facebook.com/autismdiscus... There are so many books on Autism and sometimes our minds are spinning, we think, what is another book going to do? This one will help you feel less overwhelmed and more-we-just-have-to-keep- trying. I’ve added it to my favourite Autism books. Thank you Mr. Nason for caring enough to see through the challenges to the potential of our beautiful children.

Bill Nason's work is based on idea that "Everyone deserves to feel safe, accepted and competent."
I recommend this book to any person whose life is touched by neurodivesity/autism.
I do not know if Bill Nason is autistic, I know I am. I found Bill Nason online while I was searching for parenting strategies. Bill Nason has (had?) a Facebook page with slides breaking down his content in bite sized pieces, this helped me incorporate his ideas into our routines at home.
An example, he talks about "stretching."
A characteristic of autism is rigidity. Rigidity comes from anxiety and stress. We all experience rigidity but for an autistic person who may be in a state of overwhelm off and on all day, every day, rigidity becomes a personality trait.
Bill Nason gives you insight into how rigidity develops and how to dismantle it. He is seriously fantastic. The book is a mix of insight into autistic understandings and techniques for taking on limit traits and expanding your world.
In our family we had lots of meltdowns and inflexibility. Once I understood rigidity and "stretching" we picked a time of day that my child had most energy (10AM) and at that time we would take on 1 unique experience. It could be as simple as using an escalator. Everything else was the same, after a while it is like taking temperature, you figure how far you can push it.
The less novelty my son had in his life, the more peaceful our house was. However, you cannot hope that the world will follow your rules, I felt desperate that we had to break him out of his insistence on sameness.
So, our whole days could be the same, except at 10AM, we would try SOMETHING. Slowly the boundaries of allowed events expanded and momentum built. Over years we kept up with the "stretching" and it worked, it helped, it benefited all of us.
I could go on and on about Bill Nason and this books, he wrote two. I think every person with an interest in autistic realities should read this book series. He is a treasure.
The Autism Discussion Page by Bill Nason is an excellent book for professionals as well as people who love a child with autism. It covers all the topics necessary on the core challenges of autism. Whoever reads this book will be secure in the fact that they will be able to make a child with autism feel safe. I recommend it especially to anyone studying cognitive neuroscience. It covers issues such as acceptance, understanding, cognitive issues, dynamic thinking, executive functioning, rigid and inflexible thinking, common sensory issues, different sensory worlds, self-stimulation, social struggles such as fitting in, relating skills, peer play, community inclusion, identifying, labeling and controlling emotions, shutdowns and meltdowns. Highly recommended.
I have followed Bill since he had only double digit followers years ago. He has a wealth of experience not just as a therapist but from community involvement and coaching etc. He has some great perspective and his books are great reading and reference. He writes lengthy like I do. But its not fluff or ramble. Easy for all to understand. Probably the most popular recommendation I have given to parents who are working with and wanting to understand or need to be validated when it comes to Autism. Both Blue and Green books are equally important reads/reference guides.
This was a great resource for me. My son was diagnosed with autism and a lot of this book hit home. If you work or live with someone with autism you need to read this.
