Lindsay Miller is knee-deep in Christmas cards and homemade fudge, but she's never felt more like a Grinch. Why can't Christmas be full of magic, like in her favorite movie, A Christmas Carol. . .?. . .Enter Fred, a sexy and eccentric stranger who arrives at Lindsay's door out of the blue. Dressed like he just stepped out of a Dickens novel, complete with British accent, Fred claims he's a Messenger, sent from "Headquarters" to help her discover the joy of Christmas. But is Fred an angel from above--or just stone cold crazy?
Fred's used to dealing with skeptics. Telling a stranger you've been ordered to inspire holiday cheer is a tough sell. But there's a further complication. Fred's mission is to help Lindsay right the wrongs from her past that have been holding her back. But somehow along the way, they've become wildly attracted to each other--and falling in love is not part of the plan. Fred only has til the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve to guide Lindsay to the magical future she deserves--even if it's a future without him. . ."
Sweet Christmas novel that has an underlying message to make the most of every day and not let the past define your future.
Lindsay is having a bit of trouble getting into the Christmas mood this year when a stranger shows up on her doorstep looking mysteriously like an actor from the Holiday movie she was just watching on tv. "Fred" and Lindsay start a friendship of sorts in the days leading up to Christmas even though she is resistant at times to his attempts at holiday cheer. He is quite unusual and has an air of mystery about him that keeps her thinking.
Read the book to see what happens between Lindsay & Fred!
Lindsay Miller is a hard-working career woman who has lost the Christmas within her. She sees everything as a chore - she 'has to' send out Christmas cards; 'has to' make fudge for everyone, 'has to shop,' etc. She feels overwhelmed and just wants to make it all go away...one night, while watching her favorite black-and-white version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol on television, she notes how handsome Scrooge's nephew is, how gentlemanly...
So on December 16th, there is a knock on her door, which she opens gingerly, and - there he stands: Fred, the nephew. Believing she is either insane or he is, she attempts to close the door on him. But he uses his cane as a leverage, and finds a way in. When he lets her know that he knows a few things about her (such as her eggnog is close to expiring, and where she keeps the nutmeg), she begins to think he's a figment of her imagination. But Fred persists - and when she attends a Christmas party given by her boss, and everyone there can see him, she realizes he must be real - sort of.
She has dubbed him Fred Holliday (using the first names that came to mind at the party), and he has informed her that he is there to help her. He wants her to reconcile with her high-school boyfriend, Steven, and keeps telling her that he just wants to do what's best for her. So while trying to help her find her "inner Christmas," and try to get her to see Steven, something else appears to be happening.
Fred is falling in love with his 'assignment.' And she is falling in love with him. Although he is trying to keep her at arms' length, he has to spend the remainder of days with her until December 25th, which may be harder than either of them expected it to be.
I found this book enchanting. Fred was so real that I think I started falling in love with him myself a little (don't tell my husband). There were a few passages toward the end that actually brought tears to my eyes. It is written beautifully, the imagery is magical. Ms. Donovan has a lively way with words, and the result is lovely. You can actually sense the attraction between Lindsay and Fred, feel the electricity, without anything more having occurred than kissing. But what kissing! The description is such that you actually feel them fall into each other; touch each others' soul. And I would rather have that than sex scenes any day; there is definitely romance here.
When Lindsay finally comes to grips with the fact that she will have to contact Steven - and Fred, having elicited that promise from her, realizes he must leave - it touches your heart, being tender and wrenching at the same time. But there is a promise left...
And I will not tell you any more, since I would not want to give away too much. I will tell you that if you love Christmas, and you love Hallmark movies (which this should definitely be one!), then you will love this book. I plan to read it every year at Christmastime. Highly recommended for anyone with a touch of romance in their heart; a love of Christmas in their soul.
I received a free copy in return for an honest review, but this in no way influenced my decision.

This is sweet Christmas romance is sort of an updated version of A Christmas Carol crossed with The Bishop’s Wife (or The Preacher’s Wife) with a nice twist. Lindsey is bogged down with all the chores she’s set for herself for the upcoming holidays, but then Fred shows up at Lindsey’s door saying he’s been sent to help her discover the joy of Christmas and to help her reconcile with someone in her past. The trouble is Fred appears to look exactly like her favorite character in an old movie version of A Christmas Carol, including costume and British accent. As Lindsey begins to fall for him, he falls just as hard for her as well, even though he knows she’s meant for someone else.
At first, I had a little bit of a hard time getting into this one because my first thought was, yeah, right, what a silly premise. I took a break and came back to it just as Fred gets called on the carpet by Headquarters, and was quickly hooked. Lots of humor here, and I even got teary-eyed near the end. If you enjoy holiday romance and holiday movies, you really need to put this one on your reading list. Sierra Donovan serves this one up like a nice cup of hot cocoa on a cold cozy night.
My copy was provided by Kensington Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this. It's that simple. I simply loved it. I realize Christmas was last week, but you can start your 2015 Christmas reading with this one. Or it might extend your 2014 Christmas Glow if you read it now!
Lindsey likes Christmas, mostly, but she feels stressed, too. So much to do, so little time. I found myself thinking that Ms. Donovan must have been in MY HOME, taking notes, when I read some of the moments in this book. Christmas cards! They tend to STARE at me for ages and I find, just like Lindsey, that I keep putting them off. When she makes her famous fudge, she uses SIXTEEN marshmallows, not 15 and not 17. I have a cousin that uses 30 graham crackers for her cheese cake. Not 29 and certainly not 31! Yes, I laughed. I loved that Lindsey couldn't tell if she liked roasted chestnuts, even after eating an entire bag of them. I feel the same. Yes, there was a lot of ME in this book.
One evening she's watching a very old version of Scrooge, and really enjoying what Fred looks like, when there's a knock on her door. She thinks she might be nuts when FRED is on the other side. The same Fred from the very old movie. Really, she has to be dreaming, right? When he says he's been sent from Headquarters to help her enjoy Christmas, she knows she's delusional.
There's a bit of paranormal here as we don't know exactly what, or who, Fred is. The joy is watching them both find out about each other.
While I have marked this inspirational, it certainly doesn't beat one over the head with it. This line gave me warm fuzzies, as it's what I believe, too:
"People come and go, they get older, move, have children. There's only one constant in all of Christmas." He nodded toward the nativity scene a few feet away. "And that's reason enough to rejoice."
Yes, I loved this. The ending was sweet and suited the book very well. Now, I want a Fred for each of my two unmarried daughters!
AND...I'm going to find more from this author. Soon!
Thank you, NetGalley and Kensington, for the opportunity to read this book.
First, the disclaimer. "I bought a copy of this book (but not from Amazon). All opinions are my own." That done, I fell in love with Ms. Donovan's book I read last Christmas (off Netgalley) and looked her up to see if she'd written anything else. NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT is a quirky, fun, clean romance, that is not CBA persay, but there are mentions of Christmas hymns and the baby in the manger. And it is clean. There is kisses, but nothing even remotely steamy, so if you like it mild, then this is your cup of tea.
Christmas is the season of miracles and what could be more miraculous than a man "walking off the TV" and into your life. One who claims he is a "messenger, not an angel" to help her learn how to enjoy Christmas--and to reconcile with an old lover... one she isn't even sure she wants to reconcile with.
These characters are so realistic. I could so identify with Lindsay, caught up in the hustle and bustle and the "I must do this because it's tradition even if I don't enjoy it." Really, whats the point of sending out five hundred Christmas cards, each with a handwritten note, especially to people who don't even remember you? Oh, Mrs. Pruitt, yes, she was my teacher in kindergarten a few decades ago but she MUST get a card from me or she'll be so hurt (even though she never sends me one....) You know. Yeah. Silly. But true. And Fred was so spontaneous and fun. Ice skating by the light of the moon? Why not? Everyone liked Fred. And no wonder.
If you are looking for a fun, magical romance to read this Christmas, then NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT is one to consider. Available online at your favorite booksellers. And yes, I'll look up more books by Ms. Donovan.
Most of us can identify with Lindsay Miller as one time or another in our lives. The do list for the holidays seems to be a never-ending list of chores instead of a celebration. I really wish my wakeup call had been Fred like Lindsay has in No Christmas Like the Present. What a way to bring the magic back into a life. I loved the connection to my favorite Dickens’ story, A Christmas Carol. Now I will always see the nephew Fred, in ways that I never imagined him before.
This wonderfully written book piques the imagination and the emotions with its endearing characters and enjoyable plot. It had me hooked to the very end of the short epilogue. What a delightful discovery!
A really magical, mystical Christmas story- vivid imagery and the sleigh bells almost jump out from the page!!!!!!
Lyndsay is lost in preparations for Christmas- allowing herself to get really stressed with all the items on the never ending list of ‘things to do’! Fred turns up at her door- is he an angel sent to help her- or do angels really exist? He has until Christmas Eve to help her rediscover the real reason behind Christmas and help her address things from her past. Are they falling in love- is that even allowed??????
A really sweet story- ideal for this time of year. Grab yourself a hot chocolate and book a night infront of the fire curled up with this book.
Many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book.
Quirky and poignant, NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT is a charming holiday story that combines the magic of It’s A Wonderful Life with the warmth of A Christmas Carol. A lovely, feel-good story to be read in front of the Christmas tree with a cup of cocoa.
A light, fun contemporary Christmas romance featuring the ghost of Christmas present...
"Remember, Christmas is always best when you take it out of the box." He'd bring Christmas to her the best way he knew how: one moment at a time.
NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT by Sierra Donovan is a sweet and clean, fractured retelling of Charles Dickens' 'The Christmas Carol.' It features the ghost of Christmas present calling upon a woman who needs to stop paying penance for a mistake she made in the past as a teenager. I picked it up at my library after a friend recommended it, knowing that I enjoy Christmas romances year-round. I found it to be a fun read. The small-town setting provided the ideal atmosphere. The snowy scenes were unequivocally enticing while I was sweltering in this summer's heat! This was the story of Lindsay Miller and Fred Holliday, allegedly of Camden Way, London.
Lindsay's favorite version of the movie, 'The Christmas Carol,' was the old black-and-white edition. In it, Scrooge's jolly nephew, Fred, was exceptionally handsome. He was elegantly depicted as dark-haired with warm eyes and exquisite features, resplendent in his long, trim overcoat, top hat in hand. For Lindsay, over the years, Christmas has evolved to be a drudgery of chores.
One evening, as she is watching her favorite movie while working on her Christmas cards, her doorbell rings. When she answers her door, she finds Fred there - the very same Fred from the movie - the only difference is that the Fred at her door is in vivid living color. The reader knows that "Headquarters" has sent Fred to reignite the spirit in Christmas in Lindsay. Be prepared for the magic of the season to pull off a few surprising miracles of its own.
Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from this read:
"You could sell ashes to the devil, couldn't you?" "Maybe," he said lightly. "But why would I want to?" --- "Lindsay, do you think that child in Bethlehem cares how many cards you send out, or whether you have a tree up? Those things are meant to help you remember the holiday, not be swallowed up in it. It's supposed to be a time of joy, and you go about it with such grim purpose. 'I'm going to have a merry Christmas this time even if it kills me.'" --- "I just figured out what you are," he said. "What?" "You're a present." He nodded as if in satisfaction. "Tightly wrapped, with lots of tape, lots of beautiful shiny ribbon, all tied up in impossible knots. The kind of present that makes you half mad when you're trying to get it open. Because you know, the whole time, what's inside is going to be wonderful." --- He looked down into Lindsay's face, and her eyes were bright once more, her cheeks flushed.... "I thought you were after the fudge." Lindsay didn't move one centimeter toward the kitchen, didn't stir from his arms. "I found something sweeter."
The story has a lot of humorous moments. LOL! Fred has a love/hate relationship with mistletoe. The mistletoe scenes are not to be missed and nothing short of hilarious.
NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT is an entertaining read. The epilogue is fantastic and much appreciated as it tidily wraps up the book in a highly satisfying, warm-fuzzies manner! If you enjoy light contemporary holiday romances, this is a wonderful book to enjoy while curled up in your easy chair.
I know! It is terribly early for this type of thing. Mostly, I tend to be “bah humbug” during the holidays, however, I also have a weakness for Christmas stories. But, only in private, just me, and any time of the year is good for this type of indulgence. Go figure. I have never shared that guilty pleasure with anyone before. What can I say?
No Christmas Like the Present fit perfectly into that little guilty pleasure. It was an interesting and fun twist on the classic Christmas Carol theme. There is only one “spirit” – the spirit of Christmas present. He has an amazing resemblance to Scrooge’s cousin, Fred, in the old black and white version of The Christmas Carol, so when the heroine of this story, Lindsey, has to introduce him to her co-workers, she calls him Fred Holliday (because of the season) and the name sticks.
Fred was a most interesting “spirit.” Other than being tall, dark and handsome *sigh* he kind of reminded me of Clarence from It’s a Wonderful Life. He had a mission and wasn’t opposed to unorthodox methods to complete said mission. He was sweet, had a twinkle in his eye, happy all the time, and of course had magic around him. I liked Fred. Even when he did the unforgivable and fell in love with Lindsey and got sidetracked from his mission. Shed a few tears here, because “headquarters” stepped in to get Fred back on track in a rather abrupt way. Gasp! We didn’t like “headquarters” much for a while.
Lindsey was actually a rather wonderful person. She works hard to do her best at everything. She just has a bit of an issue with the holidays, which is why Fred it sent to her in the first place. That and she is a total skeptic when Fred first shows up and has some interesting baggage from her past that is messing with her future. Isn’t that always the case?
I enjoyed how this story came together. Had a rather surprising ending that I adored. The Epilogue read like the “where are they now” stuff one would see at the end of a movie. I loved it! If you are like me, and have a guilty pleasure of Christmas stories, give this read. It is fun and entertaining and well worth the time.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Utterly enchanting, Sierra Donovan brought the heart and sentiment in this lovely Christmas story that has a feeling of familiarity, but is utterly unique. As a fan of Its a Wonderful Life, I adored Clarence the Angel, and Donovan works her own bit of ‘otherworldly’ magic into her character Fred.
Lindsay is not feeling the Christmas spirit at all: single, career-driven and just a touch lonely, the tasks that should bring joy only feel like obligations, and she just would like to fast-forward past the holiday. She’s got more than a passing resemblance to Ebenezer Scrooge, and a quiet night watching A Christmas Carol leads her to notice the charming nephew Fred.
When the doorbell rings, she is utterly amazed to find the nephew, Fred, come to life on her doorstep: in living color. Believing this is a dream, or her own slow slide to insanity, Fred knows things about her, and her house, that no one else does. When she realizes that others see Fred, she is momentarily appeased, at least her sanity is no longer a question. But …..
Fred is adorable with an English accent and manners that are straight from the film, but he also has a mission. He has to help her find her Christmas spirit while getting her to reconcile with a long lost love, Steven. But what Fred didn’t expect is the connection and the emotional pull he feels for Lindsay himself.
These two have a wonderful connection that is palpable to the reader: while their physical demonstration of the attraction is no more than a kiss – OH WHAT A KISS… There is a real sense of the two falling into love and understanding one another. But Fred’s time with Lindsay is short, and he is determined to complete his mission.
Scenes that are bittersweet and slightly melancholy vie with moments of hopefulness and potential near the end, as Fred wrangles a promise from Lindsay, her new approach to the life and holiday starting to take root. A lovely story, full of romance and emotion that will be a favorite of many.

This book has several elements that I LOVE! I love a Christmas book when it is hot and not yet the season. It puts me in a better mood. I love a fairy tale! I like the idea of thinking that maybe…just maybe…something like that might happen one day. It’s fanciful…like Santa Claus and the Easter bunny.
Lindsay Miller is totally buried in the typical trappings associated with getting ready for Christmas…making fudge and cookies, Christmas cards, buying gifts, wrapping them, decorating…the list goes on and on. The whole process has her feeling like the Grinch. Where has her Christmas spirit gone?
Enter Fred. He appears at Lindsay’s door, dressed like a character from a Dickens novel. He even has a British accent to go with his costume. He claims to be a “messenger” sent from “headquarters” to help her to rediscover the joy of Christmas. Really? Maybe Fred is an angel sent just for her…or maybe he’s an escapee from the nearest mental facility.
Fred is undaunted by the task of convincing her of his mission. He needs to help her right the wrongs from her past (shades of A Christmas Carol). He has until the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve to guide Lindsay to her magical future – whether it includes him or not. The problem? They have become VERY attracted to each other – which was not in the overall plan.
This is a cute story that points out how easy it is to get so caught up in the preparations for the holiday season that you miss the joy of it. It’s about what’s really important – and deciding what that is.
Sierra Donovan has written a charming, witty, magical tale that is not to be missed. I feel like going up to the attic right now and getting all of my Christmas “stuff” out and decorating the house while playing Christmas carols. I want to make fudge, and cocoa, and apple cider! Ms. Donovan infuses her story with eccentricity, gentle humor, and magical shenanigans. It was a pleasant interlude. I really enjoyed this sweet Christmas treat!

This is a charming, feel good story about a young woman, Lindsay Miller, who is so caught up in doing the “preparations” for Christmas that she misses its whole idea/purpose, and a strange, quirky Englishman who comes to her from who know where to try to help her set her priorities correctly and to realize the idea/purpose of Christmas and the season. Ironically, this same man looks just like a character in the holiday staple and Lindsay’s favorite holiday movie “A Christmas Carol”. Lindsay calls him “Fred”, and the name sticks. The story revolves around Fred’s actions trying to get Lindsay to slow down and enjoy the season and holiday as well as get rid of any emotional baggage from past romances. Just how these two delightful characters dance around their mutual attraction provides a wonderful and heartwarming story for the reader. I truly enjoyed it. It may not be easy to envision Christmastime while sweltering in Florida’s ninety degree weather (It is September, after all), but just picking up this book and reading this tale transported me immediately to the season in a climate more conducive to the holiday and season. I thought the author did a fantastic job of humanizing Fred (though no one is quite sure whether he is human or someone sent to help a human) but managing to keep his other worldliness ever present. As the story progresses, the reader sees a real relationship between Lindsay and Fred developing and wonders how it will all end. I do not want to give the ending away, but, suffice it to say, the author has done a masterful job with the book and the story. I am sure anyone who relishes a good Christmas read and a soft touch romance will enjoy this book. It will also throw the reader right into the holiday mode and excitement, making him/her want for more. I can easily see a follow-on story, either another holiday tale or an any-time romance. I highly recommend it. I received this from NetGalley to read and honestly review.
No Christmas Like The Present by Sierra Donovan Goodreads Author
Lindsay has her rather typical rush around the holidays. She attempts to get her Christmas cards mailed to friends and family, gifts for everyone. Fred arrives at the door, she isn't sure if he is an angel or just plain nuts. This is a perfect story for the holiday season.
Fred is such a charmer! Lindsay is taken aback when he appears on her doorstep. And no wonder. Why is he there and where did he come from? This is a cheerful and entertaining tale.
I rarely read books like this one... a small, paperback love story that should be made into a Hallmark Christmas movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching silly romantic movies with predictable plot points and neatly-wrapped endings, but I have no expectation that they will leave anything resembling a lasting impact. Surprisingly, Ms. Donovan's book did. Yes, it's a love story woven with so much fantasy that it teeters on ridiculous... but I don't care. The book had a point. It wasn't the happily-ever-after love story, or the search for forgiveness, or the need to believe in your worthiness. The point, quite simply, was to remember to live in the present, and to be present, right now, exactly where you are. So I'm taking the time to do just that. I'm sitting in bed, with my laptop exactly where it's designed to be (in my lap) and I'm telling you... I'm thankful I read this book.
This is an adorable Christmas romance with an "A Christmas Carol " twist. Lindsay Miller forgot the joy of the Christmas season. She works hard to prove herself to everyone because of a past mistake. This Christmas as she's watching her favorite movie..and enjoying her favorite character in the movie, there is a knock at her door. When she opens it, the gentleman on the other side looks identical to Scrooges nephew, Fred, which happens to be her favorite character. Fred is there to help her see the joy in the Holiday season. To totally do so, she must right the wrong in her past. Lindsay and Fred soon find themselves hoping to spend more time together and are devastated by the knowledge that they have until Christmas.
This was a cute book. Lindsay was so busy with Christmas customs, cards, fudge, etc., she forgets how to enjoy Christmas. Enter Fred, her Christmas angel who changes things for her. I just didn't under-stand the point of her making up with Steven because she had run out on him on Christmas Eve so many years ago. Otherwise it was OK and Fred gets real, of course, and they live happily ever after.
This is such a cute story. I totally love it. It's a book that I can easily recommend to just about anyone because there is nothing inappropriate in the story. Fred sounds wonderful. I can see why Lindsey grew to appreciate him. I also understand Lindsey a little bit. Sometimes the past drags us down a bit and we struggle to live in the present. Fred is good about helping her work through her issues.
out on November 7, 2014. holiday fiction. contemporary literary fiction. clean & wholesome romance. i really enjoyed it. i found it through my local library leaning program. fun times. great book cover. need to read more from SD soon. laters. read on.
This seemed more like a Childrens fairy tale. Story was farfetched. Some funny parts. I don't recommend it though it received some good reviews on Amazon
I really loved this one !! There is something about the magic at Christmas Time that makes you want to read it from the beginning to the end all at once.
This book is perfect if your looking for a fun and lighthearted Christmas read! This book has a touch of magic, romance, and reminds us to take the time to enjoy the season.
