Here we go again with yet another dud read. I confess I got hooked by the cover and I should have known better because that was all I liked about this one.

If this was a “romance”, I’m the tooth fairy because I fail to see what part in this entire thing can be construed as “romance”, but plot first…..

MCs were HS sweethearts. Heroine lost her Mother in a car accident and had amnesia about the accident where she survived but her Mother did not. After the accident, her Father hated her and started to abuse her. Hero knew this but never tried to help her. Nice.

One night while they were on a date, his Mother calls him to come home ASAP, so he leaves heroine to walk home alone in the dark and she is almost raped by 4 men. I say almost because when he left her, he felt guilty and sensed that something may be wrong so he turned around to go check on her and found her on the ground with the men almost raping her. He throws some rocks at them from far away and they leave.

He then goes to London to study and while he is away, her home life is miserable. On top of that, his Mother hates her and bullies her to leave her son or she would ruin her and their relationship. So seeing as her Father had abandoned her and has no family left in town and doesn’t see how they can stay together when his Mother hates her so much, she makes him think that she cheated on him with his BFF while he was away so that he doesn’t pursue her. She then goes to NY and a few years later to LA where she becomes a famous romance author. 🙄

In the meantime, Hero is hurt that she cheated & broke up with him. We learn that he eventually ended up in LA too as a chef in some upscale restaurant and knew where heroine was all the time in the 10 years but never went after her. He even saw her in LA at his restaurant but she was with her boyfriend and he hid instead of going to talk to her. So after that incident, he leaves LA and goes back home to open a café with his “bestie”, Maggie.

Now this is where the story took a nosedive to nowhere land romance because for 99% of the story, Hero flirts with the OW, is constantly touching her (aka helping her put on/off her apron & hugs), they laugh, hang out, are each other's confidant and the other’s “plus-one” at events & bars, etc.

Supposedly Hero only sees her as a “friend” and not a romantic interest but the OW from the start is in love with him and has been waiting for him for years to return her feelings. She couldn’t move on with anyone else or give any one a chance because for her, Hero was her “IT”. Why the OW was inserted and made to seem that SHE was the heroine in the story instead of the one that we are reading about, is beyond me because there is more chemistry, love, affection and deep connection between Hero & OW than there was between him & heroine! I kid you not. Reason I did not DNF this is because I was more invested in the OW then the two I was reading about. Lol.

Anyway, in the present, heroine returns to sell her family house and to get closure. She & Hero end up having sex a few times and neither one is thinking of getting back together or still in love with each other until the end. The dynamic between the MCs was off for 99% of the story as they came across as horny but uncaring to patch anything up. Neither wanted to work towards reconciliation. Neither thought about forever until the last couple pages. Neither inquired about the other's past history during the separation. Neither had any deep conversations or bonding toward each other. What we have is more scenes of him & OW than with him and heroine. In fact, there is a scene at 95% or so where even though MCs have been sleeping together now for weeks and kind of together – but not really – he goes to a bar with heroine’s BFF and OW and they have drinks and fun but he never invites heroine. Why not is never explained. Then during their HS reunion party, again he never asks heroine to be his date but he does bring the OW as his date! WHY?

While heroine is dancing with his former BFF (the one he thinks she cheated with) , he gets a bit jealous and OW decides to make her move and starts kissing him and he doesn’t push her away! Supposedly he is in shock but then he realizes that heroine is seeing him kiss OW and knows he screwed up but does he tell OW off? No. Instead OW begs him to not humiliate her by pushing her away so she gives him another kiss! It’s when he sees heroine running out and deeply hurt that he chases after her but never explains anything to her!

Then we have him take the OW home where she confesses her love to him and starts bawling how she has loved him her entire life but he can’t return her feelings. She even kisses him again and he just stands there frozen and not saying anything! You would think that he would tell her off like he is back together with heroine and she is the only woman he loves and doesn’t see her in a romantic sense, blah, blah, blah.
Instead we get lots of stupid POVs how he couldn’t believe he was so blind that he didn’t see how his Maggie loved him and felt about him. Like he didn’t have hints over & over again by OW. 🥴

BTW, we never really got any resolution about that whole scenario other than the OW telling him two days after that she is going away for a few weeks to think and get her head straight and he is begging her not to leave and even starts flirting/joking with her! Ugh!! This was one time that I was routing for the OW because he totally led her on and I was not convinced by the end that he wasn’t in love with her too! He showed more heartbreak for hurting the OW than for heroine!

Anyway, the rest is heroine & him finding out a secret of how her Mother & his Father were deeply in love with each other and were having an affair. They were running away to be together when the car accident happened and the parents died leaving heroine as the sole survivor. This is why his Mother hated her because she knew of the affair but as soon as they confront her, she is all apologetic to heroine and all is forgiven. Lol.

Then on the last chapter, we suddenly have hero realizing that he loves heroine, goes back to LA to tell her, OW finds love with an OM and HEA. 😖

Safety:

Neither was celibate during separation. Hero had lots of GFs. His recent one was a 3 year old relationship before they broke up. Heroine too had been with several men and even got close to being engaged to someone but she said that she never felt the kind of attraction she had with Hero for any OM so apparently he has the magic 🌙.

HEA with them getting married in the end and OW of course attending ceremony with her new beau.

Their chemistry is just as potent as ever. Is this a fling or a second chance?

Their journey had my emotions on a roller coaster. My heart was overwhelmed with all the revelation in this book. At some parts my heart was beating fast.

The characters are well written and Alexa pulls you in with every page.

Do I need to say that I recommend this book?

Definitely recommend.

Dylan and Jenna were sweethearts until she left town without telling him. She returns years later to sell her parents' home to get closure. What she wasn't expecting was to run into Dylan and have the feelings they once share reignite. As they navigate through their new situation Jenna will come across information that will put everything in place and turn not only her world but Dylan's upside down. Will they survive the aftermath and get their chance for a happily ever after. This story had my emotions all over the place.

This was a great book. It was a page turner and the suspense was intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down. When they meet it was love at first sight. Jenna lost her memory and Dylan was going to help her find out who she was. But Dylan was falling for her in this moment and she was as well. They were falling in love with each other could they be happy and could she gain her memory back. Or will she feel the same way when she remember would she still wanted to be with him right now in this time of crisis and moment. I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. Grab a tub of ice cream, your blanket, some Kleenex's as well as your kindle and let this romance book take you on a journey you won't forget. My heart ached for Jenna and the things she had to go through including breaking Dylan's heart. When Jenna returns home, she starts to see things in a whole different light and the past becomes clearer for her. This was a really good romance read that just might bring a tear or two to your eyes including how the book ends. Don't be surprised if you finish the tub of ice cream and the book in one setting. Just saying. :)

Ten years ago Jenna made Dylan Anderson dislike her before she left town, now she is back and wants answers of what really happened then. She has lost part of her memory of what happened back then. A hidden journal with letters from the past is discovered that starts bringing back her memories and answer why they where torn apart. The story grabbed my interest and kept turning pages. I found the book to be well worth reading. This is a new Author to me. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Dylan and Jenna. They were childhood sweethearts. She broke his heart when she left without saying a word. He left and came back and owns a cafe. Shes a well known author who is back to sell her parents house and to get closure. He still hates her for what she did but he also still wants her. Theres still chemistry there for both. There are secrets revealed and memories lost are found. There are tearful moments. There are happy moments that will mack you teary eyed. Loved this story.

Rushed and Incomplete

This had potential in the beginning then slowly deteriorated around half way through, culminating in a rushed and unsatisfying end. We don’t even get to learn what happened to Lola and her cheating fiancée nor Paul, the ex best friend with the heart of gold.

The whole fragmented memory loss mystery was so sloppily concluded as was Dylan’s mom’s outward hatred towards the innocent Jenna. Dylan himself was no catch either. All he cared about was how he was hurt because Jenna left and didn’t even bother to learn why. What a dunce.

Dylan & Jenna: First love/ amnesia/ small town/ enemies to lovers/ journal and letters from the past/ second chance romance: This story had a well written storyline and well developed characters. It was a rollercoaster of emotions with all of the revelations that came to light. Alexa Whitmore did a great job with this beautiful story, and I highly recommend it.

Interesting, entertaining and steamy. This definitely has depth, and is very emotional, soul mates. Amongst the twist, turns, ups and down of this first love, love isn't the issue as much as their journey to heal wounds and rekindle their mutual attraction. This small town has many branches of romantic options and I hope all of supporting characters find their one true love as well. This is an entertaining second chance romance book that grabs your attention and holds it from beginning to end. The storyline is intriguing and dramatic as the elements unfold. The characters are well written with depth to their personalities and steamy chemistry. I enjoyed this book.

A beautifully written book

The couple are given a second chance, not everyone wants them to get it. This is a great opportunity for a cry for what happens, and the resulting ending.

An emotional read

Jenna and Dylan’s story was quite the emotional ride. I love the way this story is like a Phoenix, love rose again from the ashes. I really enjoyed this book, the steam level was about a two 🌶️🌶️. A little more descriptive detail would have been greatly appreciated. Overall it was a good book.
