MURDER AT THE HALLOWEEN PARTY: Cozy Historical Murder Mystery

Rate this book
A glamorous masquerade promised mystery, mischief—and a generous prize for unmasking the guests. But no one expected the true shock to come when the host was dead before midnight.

Thirty guests, each costumed as a legendary figure from history or fairy tale, had gathered to celebrate. But behind the festive masks and sparkling conversation were old grudges, whispered secrets, and more than a few reasons to dislike the guest of honor—a self-made real estate tycoon known for stepping on toes in his climb to the top.

Was it his bitter assistant? A rival? A spurned lover—or perhaps his refined wife who may be hiding a few secrets of her own?

Private investigator Amanda Halloran and her husband, Lt. Brendan Halloran, must untangle a web of half-truths, hidden motives and deadly ambition to unmask the killer.

MURDER AT THE HALLOWEEN PARTY is the 10th book in the Massachusetts Cozy Mystery Series, set in 1930s Boston—a charming world of stylish sleuths, high society secrets where murder is always in fashion.

3.5* - easy to read who done it? with an ending I did not expect. I’d pinned it on a different person completely!

Having not read any of the others in this series, I was apprehensive about not understanding the character relations however I was wrong to worry. Easy read, the relations between each of the characters mentioned to allow you to understand but clearly not just repeated from other books if you follow the series.

I love Halloween so saw this and thought I would have a read. Not the best book in the world, but I didn’t guess the ending and that bumped up the rating for me.

A simple read with Halloween vibes. The story was entertaining, and the ending surprised me. First book I read in the series, but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything by not reading the other books. I listened to the audiobook, which used AI narration, so it didn’t contribute in any way to story.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions are my own.

MURDER AT THE HALLOWEEN PARTY is hands down one of my favorite installments in the Massachusetts Cozy Mystery Series!

From the very first page, I was swept into 1930s Boston glamorous, atmospheric, and brimming with secrets. The masquerade setting is absolutely perfect: elegant costumes, hidden identities, simmering rivalries… and then a shocking murder before midnight. The tension is delicious.

The victim a self made real estate tycoon with plenty of enemies makes for the ideal centerpiece to a classic whodunit. Every suspect felt believable, from the bitter assistant to the polished wife with secrets of her own. I loved trying to piece together motives and clues alongside Amanda and Brendan Halloran.

Speaking of the Hallorans they are such a fantastic sleuthing duo. Amanda’s sharp intuition paired with Lt. Brendan’s steady investigative approach makes for a dynamic and engaging partnership. Their chemistry adds warmth and heart to the mystery, balancing the darker elements of the crime.
The plotting is tight, the pacing is spot on, and the red herrings kept me guessing until the final reveal. Just when I thought I had it figured out I didn’t!

What I especially adore about this series is its blend of sophistication and suspense. The 1930s setting gives everything a stylish, almost cinematic feel, while still delivering a clever and satisfying mystery.

If you love classic whodunits, glamorous settings, and smart amateur sleuths, this book is an absolute must read. Cozy mystery fans will devour this one.
