An Arch Magus dies, only to find himself in the body of a young man in a medieval Kingdom. He finds out that he is the second son of a Duke, exiled to a desolated town by his own family. Shackled by the notorious reputation of his new shell, he tries his best to develop his domain, implementing new policies and innovations, leading his subjects to prosperity. In this world where magic is undeveloped, he shall once again pave a new path.
I hate to do this, but I've gotta be honest: this felt like a filler episode. I can't presume to know what the author is experiencing, but it feels like they aren't too excited about this story anymore. I'm glad the afterward said the next volume will be the last, though a little less excited about all the "side stories" to show where all the characters go after the end. I say this because I think the series has way too many pov characters and I don't really care about 90% of them.
The story was strongest for me when we predominantly followed Lark as he explored his new reality, trained his body to reclaim a fraction of his previous power, and contemplated the mark he left on the world.
As much as the Demon War plot has been positioned as the overarching storyline that needs to be resolved, I think it hijacked a good story of a character reflecting on his past, both his failures and his triumphs, and getting the opportunity to make similar decisions again. Now things have turned into a series of fetch quests and side stories.
I hope the author can end the series on a high note. Going 15 volumes will already be an accomplishment, but the real win is ending it rather than stalling out as so many other series seem to do.
I was sad at the end of Republic of Everfrost that it could have been the last book in this series. I would surely have missed these tales immensely. While I came to this series via audible, specifically looking for other books Tom Taylorson has narrated, I was glad indeed to have found Legend of the Arch Magas and Michael Sisa. While reminded greatly of some of my favourite nights playing RPG with my mates, I find myself equally falling in love with the world Michael has created. So not sure when the next audible release might be I jumped over to Patreon and gladly this ebook release. I welcomed this ebook so very much that I reread everfrost last night just to remind myself.
That said I'm terrible at describing things without giving away spoilers, because frankly I just get carried away. But we do get to see into the dwarven kingdom a bit more which I'm happy to see and what some people might get up to while the boss is away. And never would I think that I'd want to give a giant fire lord elemental a big old hug.
Thank you Michael Sisa for letting us back into your wonderful world
I am a little sad about this rating. For the longest time this has been a 4-star series. OP MC comes with knowledge nobody has seen in over 1000 years, and everyone looks around saying "Holy Sh*t!". I really enjoyed that part. The last couple of books have diverted from that formula. Ever since Lark became King the story has become more about future plans to fight the demons and less about Lark's power and knowledge. This one was the worst. Nothing really happened. Lark went to a few places and did some things but there wasn't a single "Holy Sh*t" moment in this entire book. I kind of skimmed after a while. Hopefully the next book is a little better or I might drop the series completely.
I miss the days when this series focused on the story of an arch magus who used his advanced knowledge to excel at his second chance at life.
As the story progressed and grew, this element was consumed by an enormous cast of characters and an overarching narrative far too large for books of this size to handle. These books have always been short; it's part of their charm. Back when it was focused on only a few central characters, this wasn't a problem. Now it has a vast range of characters; you get a book like this.
This latest edition barely moves any storyline forward in any meaningful way. Each character/main story point gets assigned a couple of chapters to try and move their story arcs forward (including Lark himself), and that's just not enough for an entire novel. If each of these books were two to three times the length, then maybe this series could handle it, but right now it is a prime example of a story that has got too big for the author to comfortably handle.
Thinking back on it, this series hasn't been the same since Lark agreed to take over the throne. It has been way less focused on the story of the "Arch Magus" and much more focused on the demon invasion story. Beyond the size issue I mentioned before, I think there is a secondary issue of this not really being the story this author wanted to tell. There seems to be a reluctance to get the necessary events rolling to move this story forward, one that I never felt back when it was a story focused on a protagonist using advanced knowledge to recapture his lost strength and, coincidentally, lifting others around him at the same time.
I hate to admit it, but when I saw the note at the end of the novel that the next book is the last in this series, I breathed a sigh of relief. I'm hoping that it nicely puts to bed this entire demon war saga, that it can have Lark step down from the throne and return to Blackstone town, and get back to a point that if the author wanted to pick up this story again, he could do so while focusing on the core ingredients that made this series so enjoyable in the first place.
Ultimately, this book felt like a waste of time. In terms of meaningful plot progression, it can be summarised as Lark visiting the dwarves, making plans for advanced magical weapons made with adamantine, then going home to do some side character story advancement. It's so thin that I'm not even going to bother to call it spoilers because, honestly, nothing really happens.
Love this series. A bit disappointed it’s coming to an end. I got the feeling from the afterword, the author is kind of burnt out on writing all these books and not getting much traction in the market. It’s a saturated market, that’s for sure. I don’t know the magic recipes, but I know good and I know bad. This is good.
I like to describe this series as an action adventure fantasy Isekai series. It’s not progression. There’s some base/empire building, disciples, great characters and companions, with an overall optimistic tone. The MC, Lark, is a good guy, but not a one dimensional good guy. Sometimes he lets people do their thing when it’s not really necessary for him to dictate how things should go. All to often people in positions of power get the idea in their heads they need to control everything and dictate everything. But the author chose a wiser path for Lark. And what’s great is we see why so many people in the story are drawn to him. It’s not because he’s got powerful abilities, it’s because of who he is. That optimist, pragmatic person who may have the power needed to change the world for the better.
So it’s a feel good story, and to me reading it is like sipping hot chocolate on a cold winter morning. I can just curl up, sip and read and let all the world’s problems go and just enjoy a feel good story told well.
I hope you recover from feeling burnt out soon, Mr. Sisa. If you are interested, Michael Anderle has some great classes, books, and social groups to help writers such as yourself. He cranks out a book a month or more, all high quality. I know that whenever I make better progress, it helps me mentally. Most of it's free, so check it out. About this series: I binge read it from book 1 to book 14 in a couple of weeks. There are a lot of different plot threads weaving throughout, and the author creates a brilliant tapestry full of scintillating conversations and rich characters. It is a wonderful series with plenty of room to grow. Maybe a spinoff or two with a co-author can be worked out.
The most annoying issue for me is the commonly misspelled word "whoa". It's a word used when expressing wonder or amazement as well as a command to a h¹orse 🐎 to get it to stop. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!
This series is recommended for ages 14 and up. There is very little sex or cussing, but a lot of violence. Beheading and dismemberment are frequently encountered. Social violence is also common; lying, betrayal, slavery, etc.
I feel like the series overall should get 8 unicorns, but the latest book gets a 9. So 9 it is. Please write more! 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄 Recommended to buy or borrow. Available on Kindle Unlimited.
Great as always, sad to see the series coming to an end
Enjoyable as always, excellent cast of characters, brilliant MC, excellent world building. I followed the series when I discovered it years ago, and I own every book in it other people should as well. The author says this series will probably end doing the next book Which will probably be two or three times as long, please make it five times as long I will be very sorry to see this an excellent book as always. A magnificent wonderful MC. seri go, an excellent well done series, wish it would not end.
I've really enjoyed this series. The author did a very good job with the world development and the MC. Although the MC is OP, he really is likable and mature. I would recommend this series to other. With a little more depth and volume added to each book I believe this series will be a favorite of lots reader. The books are to short and don't give enough on the background of the MC but they are well written and easily enjoyable.
Your writing has defiantly improve since the first book. Really enjoyed reading this book and even stood what i was currently reading when I saw it was released. I hope we don't have to wait long for the next book as I'm ready looking guard to what happens next to lark.
What a fantastic read I enjoy this series so much. Been reading from the beginning and still I'm never disappointed catches me at every turn with excitement and suspense
This is one of my favorite SF series! It is light hearted and upbeat. It is just what we need in these complex times. I hope the fun continues with many more books! Craig
This has nothing to do with the book, I just desire to express my general displeasure with the AP class that comes from the typically EASY high school class of chemistry. Book was good though.
I think every reader needs to start doing this to force authors to write a quick Recap chapter, which readers can skip if they remember, and those who don't won't stop reading the series.
Continuation of the story. Some side characters with a couple of different plot choices. A fairly quick read. Looking forward to the final book of the series.
All of this series has been good and there’s only one book left. It’s hard to imagine that Michael Sisa started writing the series while in med school and continued it through his medical career. He’s kind of like Lark, yeah?
Idk if this is the last book in the series, but I enjoyed this series. I guess I’m a softy but it need a little more romance for the MC. However, I guess the love for disciple and country works too.
I have binge read the last 14 books in can’t wait for more
This is been a great series not straight good and evil great sub stories. I have been read the series for the last week and a half and I plan on giving you a good night. Sleep until the next book comes out.
Besides the bone replacement thing, I don't know what's going to happen next. you went from demon invasion to something else now it seems. I don't know
I’m glad get some background stories told again about some of the first season characters. I am quite intrigued by the turn of events here and can’t wait for the final installment
