The zodiacs aren't lines drawn amongst the stars. They're real.
A century ago, the Zodiacs were condemned to one day be reborn onto Earth. Stripped of their immortality, magic and astrological memories. Their crime? A prophecy foretelling the rise of one of their own alongside the God of Darkness.
Reclusive Reyna Peréz has never belonged anywhere. Which suits her fine, considering the deadly abilities she's possessed since birth. When a night out with her only friend goes horribly wrong, Reyna is rescued by a band of strangers who claim she's one of them.
A reincarnated Zodiac.
Reyna soon finds herself bound for the celestial island of her origins and into the arms of fellow Zodiac and cocky con man, Brax Riggs. Reyna lives in isolation so others might stay alive. Brax has spent his mortal existence running from those who'd rather see him dead. After a lifetime of shutting others out, both are hungry to let someone in.
But the more Reyna uncovers about her own disturbing connection to the Dark God, the more lines blur between who she is and who she'll need to become.
Forbidden desires will be tested. Alliances annihilated. And the difference between light and darkness, shattered forever.
A.J. Lexa puts ideas to paper from the lake haven suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, where she lives with her husband and daughter. When not reading or writing, A.J. enjoys lake life, collecting fairy figurines and binge streaming her favorite shows. After 15+ years of advertising for national and regional brands, A.J. decided the stories in her mind could longer be condensed into sixty second commercials. They needed more magic. And kisses.
A.J. Lexa's urban fantasy debut novel packs a strong punch with its unique reimagining of the Zodiacs, intricate world-building, fast-paced adventures, and hot, tension-fueled romance!
In this world, the Zodiacs are immortal celestial beings with elemental magic who are forced to reincarnate as mortals on Earth with no memories of their past once a prophecy from the Dark God threatens to use their magic to end all life as they know it. However, their new mortal lives are not enough to stop darker forces at work, so they must reawaken their powers, reunite with each other, and return to Nidus— the home of the Goddess of Light and the source from which all souls reincarnate to Earth. Once there, it becomes clear that notions of good vs. evil and light vs. dark are not as clear as they seem, as the Zodiacs must navigate a complicated world of politics, betrayal, lies, and lust to find the Dark God and stop the prophecy.
Our FMC, Reyna (formerly known as Cancer), has lived a mortal life of isolation and fear since developing powers that allow other humans' emotions to bombard her psyche and her touch to suck another's life force from their body. She joins the other Zodiacs in hopes that she might find answers about her powers and ask the Goddess to remove them completely so she can live a peaceful, mortal existence on Earth. Her plans are quickly interrupted as she meets a mouthy, arrogant lion of a man on the way— Brax, the Zodiac of Leo. Reyna can't feel his emotions, yet everything about him invades her mind and gets under her skin in ways that are far more irritating and intriguing.
I loved the unique magic system and extensive world-building in this book! Lexa's refreshing take on the Zodiac fantasy trope was the top reason I submitted a request, and it definitely didn't disappoint! The pacing of it reminded me of other complex urban fantasy books like Crescent City, in that you need to take your time learning the world and its politics in the beginning, but once the action and adventure take off, you can fly through the rest. The tension between Reyna and Brax throughout the book is incredible. The author's beautiful writing style draws you deep into the characters' emotions, so you can easily get wrapped up in their relationship. Not to mention, this man has been silently pining for Reyna for the entirety of their immortal existence. 🔥🔥
I'm surprised this was listed as a standalone on BookSirens because I feel like it would make a great series. I was impressed that the author could even fit the level of detail she did into one book. Some aspects of the ending felt a bit rushed due to this, but overall it was a great read. The end doesn't seem totally closed off to a second book, so I'll be keeping my eye out for this author's future work!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in return for an honest review!
____________________ Pre-Read Excited for this author's debut fantasy novel! A unique plot where Zodiacs are actually ancient celestial beings who have been stripped of their immortality and reincarnated? Absolutely yes.
How to explain the awesomeness that is this book. Once it starts it hooks you. If you are a fan of Zodiac and celestial stories this book is for you. I can not recommend this enough!
A.J. Lexa has skyrocketed into my favorite authors list with this stunning debut. The world is lush and immersive, the prose is clean and lyrical, and the characters are diverse, dynamic, and altogether engrossing. Reyna is the kind of MC that sticks with you for a long time, and I love that she is emotionally deep and occasionally dark. I felt represented and seen in her internal monologue, yet the story wasn’t bogged down by her narrative. The vivid cast of side characters never felt boring or one dimensional, and the love interest and the villain were both so delicious in their own right. Levant is the kind of villain it’s hard to hate, and Brax is the perfect counter balance; bright, brash, but still heartfelt. Lexa has an equally bright future ahead of her with this first publication. I’m so excited to see what comes next.
“As the universe slept, the faintest of the Zodiac constellations tossed and turned. Cancer had never been the boldest or easiest constellation of stars to spot, but Reyna's determination always endured.” … Cass Says: “These Lines Between Stars will be forever written on my heart!” ... Book Type: Paperback … There is so much noise out there that often sounds the same when it comes to books, especially in trending genres and I am happy to say that Lines Between Stars is a breath of fresh air I was happy to get my hands on and one that readers should give a shot as their next summer read (not that this book isn't for all seasons...I'll get to that later).
I am so happy to live in a world where books like this are brought into the world. There are things about this book that made me feel seen as a person which helped me connect so easily with this story, it's themes, and the characters who graced it's pages. I'll get into the specifics below, but I have to say that it is rare to come across something that isn't trying to be like anything else. Lines Between Stars is unapologetically itself and while there are familiar bits of imagery and moments that may remind you of Rogue from X-Men or the urban fantasy setting of the Mortal Instruments, it was so refreshing to pick up a story where I felt like I was discovering something new for the first time in a long time.
Lines Between Stars by A.J. Lexa is a debut Urban Romantasy that explores the worlds of Zodiacs who have been reincarnated on earth and the adventures (and mischief) that ensues once the reality of their identity is revealed. This story unfolds by following Reyna Perez, the reincarnation of the Zodiac Cancer, on her journey from self-proclaimed recluse in San Diego, to worlds beyond our own to try and restore balance before things are too late. The problem is, this is all a bit of a surprise for Reyna who hides her own secret magic and has no idea the Zodiacs are real, let alone that she is one of them. It only gets worse when she finds herself in the middle of a literal battle between the "Light" and the "Dark" and uncovers memories of a life she once knew as Cancer.
Lexa brings a crew of characters to life with her beautiful prose and enticing storytelling that will have you binging the entire book in one sitting if you aren't careful. But I say, throw caution to the wind and dive into this delicious debut as soon as you get your hands on it.

Rating Breakdown:
Writing/Prose: 5/5 Stars - Lexa's prose is to be commended as it's both alluring while at the same time unpretentious, a hard balance to find in this writing world for those who love writing lush descriptions while not sacrificing pacing for the story. Lexa may be a debut author, but she writes like she's done this hundreds of times and I'm always hanging on her every word.
Characters: 4.75/5 Stars - It's sort of cruel to knock this down .25 but only because I really do love these characters and it's a TOUGH balancing act with such a large cast of characters. Lexa handles it well and my only critique, which is minor, is that I'd still love to see more from some of our side characters. Still it's not easy to do when the two (or three depending on how you look at it) leading characters are constantly stealing the show. Reyna, our leading lady, is complex but interesting throughout the entirety of her arc. There are familiar protagonist tropes like "the reluctant hero," and "refuse the call" that live inside of her spirit but she has a soft strength that I recognized in many people I love and adore. Someone who can't always speak up for themselves but isn't afraid to try their best, especially for the people they love. Fear consumes her at the beginning of LBS, but her journey to uncover her past and identity explore that fear, its origins, and how she works to overcome it, or sometimes succumb to it. Brax, our male lead is brash, hot-headed, and clever (as Leos naturally tend to be), but his backstory brings a very interesting dynamic to this story as it intertwines with Reyna's. Many LI's are divisive within the fandoms and Brax will be no exception, but I think there is something refreshingly complex about him where Lexa doesn't shy away from his flaws. He's not just "a bad boy" who turns it around for the FMC, he's someone who has made sacrifices, compromises, and stands on his internal moral code for the people he cares about most. I will forever appreciate the existence of him as Reyna's counterpart. And of course some may consider Levant a lead of this story despite being a more secondary character in my opinion. But his presence is always stealing the show so take from that what you will. Not all the Zodiacs get much page time which isn't a knock on this story, as it's focus is elsewhere, but I was very invested in trying to gather tidbits of each of them where I could.
Pacing: 5/5 Stars - Pacing is subjective for every reader. I've seen some people say some books are too slow whilst below it a reviewer says the pacing was too fast. Everyone reads at their own speed and so I'll just say for someone who does enjoy lingering in a world, slow burn, etc. this book is fast-paced but that's not a critique. This book is meant to be a standalone so it doesn't have the luxury of 4-5 chapters of fluff just to kill time before the climax and cliffhanger leading into book 2. This book sets out on a mission and it carries that out while still moving through the world and it's characters with planned haste. There are moments that are meant to feel quick, rushed, etc. and you'll notice from those brief chapters sprinkled here and there. But they are purposeful and meant to set the stage for the story ahead. I appreciate that I was never left wondering for too long on things and the mysteries that did hold out until their reveals later in the story were well worth the wait.
World-building: 4.75/5 - This again feels cruel to even take off points for this but it's simply because I was so enticed by the world Lexa built that I was left (at times) wanting more. This is more or less because I am a world-building addict and for most books, it just is never quite enough for me. Still, all that said, Lexa brings us to the world of Nidus, this rich and bountiful place that houses the home of the Zodiacs (before they were reincarnated on Earth). And because I alluded to it earlier, it really could be a book for any season, although Summer is a good place to start, because in another unique note to her world, Lexa divides Nidus up into the Zodiacs' "seasons" (any winter Capricorns out there?) and our Zodiacs are sent on a mission as they explore the regions they once ruled in their lives on Nidus before Earth. Naturally, Reyna and Brax (Cancer and Leo respectively) are our leads who just so happen to both be summer Zodiacs so we spend a lot of time in their region which is deliciously warm, seductive, and the perfect setting for a budding romance. Speaking of...
Romance: 5/5 (first half) - Opposites attract and that is the same for our Reyna/Brax in LBS. Reyna's insecurities meet a very confident Brax and while their first encounter is certainly memorable, my favorite thing about these two is how they balance one another, something especially alluring in a world where their creators are literal manifestations of Light and Dark. Reyna and Brax have natural chemistry and their whirlwind romance hold a lot of extra context behind the scenes (not everything is always as it seems) that makes things especially more interesting the further you get into the story. I will always stan a supportive partner who is also not afraid to challenge their counterpart, something these two do and Lexa navigates well. I've seen many books fail at this for the sake of being "all supportive" where the MLI never challenges the FMC even when she's wrong. No thanks. Brax isn't afraid to challenge Reyna and likewise, Reyna doesn't mind calling Brax on his BS. There is some open door spice in this book as well and Lexa pays special attention to female pleasure which is well done. If spice isn't your thing, this book still carries enough plot and dynamics to keep you going so don't let those chili peppers scare you off.
Plot/Structure: 5/5 - This plot really is just fun from start to finish. There are heavy themes that are given the appropriate attention but also moments of levity that balance it out nicely. The characters speak like real people (keep in mind this is urban fantasy and so while much of it takes place in a fantasy world, there are real world elements and dialogue due to the context of the story). I enjoy the mystery, the teasing out of certain things that Lexa leaves breadcrumbs for us even from the very start. This book very much knows what it is and Lexa never shies away from that. Like I said, it's not trying to be like anything else and I know there will inevitably be people to say "oh there are seasons like ACOTAR" and I beg of you, begone with those words. As someone who knows the author from the writing community, I can tell you Lexa drew no inspiration from ACOTAR, having completed it long before ever reading ACOTAR. Also spoilers, not every book that has "seasons" or "elemental magic" etc. is based on ACOTAR. We can do better, folks. Lexa weaves the story along the lines (between stars) and between pages of lush prose that make it feel like an exciting, well thought-out, and fresh adventure from start to finish. In fact, I loved it so much I wouldn't mind an eventual sequel or spin-off if that was ever "written in the stars."
Representation: No Rating - Generally I don't rate representation but I do like to comment on it for the books I read so you know what to expect. Lexa crafts her Zodiac earthlings to be reincarnated all across the world so you will see characters from many walks of life, ethnicities, colors, and cultures within this book. Queer characters also exist in this world and on the pages of this story. Reyna is a character with a Mexican heritage. The writer took care to have readers from Reyna's culture/background read and comment and she did a great job incorporating elements of Reyna's culture despite it not being central to the story. Conversations with readers from the queer community were also consulted regarding certain plot points so I do appreciate that this author did put in the time to ensure the characters she included were being portrayed as best as they could be.
Overall Rating & Why: 5/5 Stars - This book is close to my heart for many reasons and I don't calculate my overall score mathematically but based on how it feels during and after. Lines Between Stars is special and it is a beautiful debut that clearly shows Lexa's passion for story telling. I can't wait to read more from her in the future and I urge you all to pick up a copy and leave your thoughts on this ASAP.
Thank you, A.J. for this story and for sharing it with the world.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is now my Roman Empire. I cannot stop thinking about it! It is such a unique and interesting story about Reyna who has never fit in and never had a place that felt like home. After a horrible night, she is rescued by the Zodiacs who have been made mortal on Earth. She must face her demons, discover her truths, and learn to trust and receive help from others. I loved the character and world building and of course the connection between her and Leo. There were so many surprises and twists in the book! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
Completely out of my typical genre, this book blew me away. The beginning is slow starting, but that happens when you have to build the world no one has ever known. The second half of the book absolutely was unputdownable! Nonstop, action, plot, twist, one page after the other, in a very gentle and apt ending… which may eventually lead into a new book! Glad I gave this one a chance, so happy to know that this world exists out there!
3.6⭐️ I loved the idea of Zodiacs being reincarnated as humans. The story was paced really well and kept me reading to the end. The writing itself was quite good, but there were some lack of transitions between scenes. It kinda just jumped and I was wondering what happened? I kept thinking I accidentally skipped a page.
The way I devoured and loved this book! 🔥I knew just from the blurb that I would enjoy it but nothing could’ve prepared me for the way I would be absolutely obsessed! I’m already recommending it to anyone and everyone who will listen!
It’s not often I come across a book in this genre with a super unique magic system and world! I loved the dual POV and the character building and bonds that are created, not just between the MMCs but others, really kept me invested! A.J. Lexa knew exactly what she was doing writing this! Phenomenal!
LBS is one of my favourites reads this year. The unique setting and concept had me hook, line and sinker, as did the writing style. There were moments I’d have to stop and reread sentences because they were so gorgeously put together! Lines has everything I’m looking for in a fantasy romance—glorious settings, a ball (!!), angsty and morally grey MMC, delicious villains, and thought-provoking situations. Perfect for romantasy fans looking for something a little different, or those who know and love anything to do with zodiac signs.
Loved them!! These books completely wrecked me—in the best way. There were moments that were heartbreaking, I had to put the book down just to breathe immediately picked it back up because I had to know what would happen next. Some scenes left me wordless—literally stunned, staring at the page, trying to process what I just read. The emotional depth, the tension, it all felt so real. I laughed, I cried, and I’m still thinking about them after finishing.
This was an incredible debut novel by a promising author! Lexa has such an immersive writing style, that really helped me as the reader to connect to the characters. I thought this was a wonderful urban fantasy that feels refreshing and different in the genre, with some very clever concepts such as Lexa's take on the Zodiac.
I thoroughly enjoyed Reyna as a character, and she had some great dynamics (including with Brax) and although the formation of these relationships could feel a little fast-paced, I attributed this to the fact that she had some of these connections in her past life as well.
Overall, this was a really strong story that I really liked, with some interesting twists and well thought out mythology.
I really had no true idea what to expect when reading this book. It far exceeded any expectations I could have created. It was such a different to me book. I wasn't really sure where this was going to go and I'm glad that I stuck with it even though there were some spots that felt too slow for me. I have to say I really enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed the way the zodiac characters were portrayed. I would have liked to have seen more of the others but I do understand the focus was on a select group. Fantastic honestly. A fantastic and unique story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Lines Between Stars took my heart in its hands and didn’t let go. A.J. Lexa has a quiet, lyrical writing style that sneaks up on you—one minute you’re reading a sentence that seems simple enough, and the next it’s hitting you right in the feelings.
I loved every character. Truly. They felt real, layered, and unforgettable. The plot twists were perfectly timed—surprising but never jarring—and kept me hooked from start to finish. The zodiac element was such a unique and well-integrated part of the story; it gave the narrative an extra layer of meaning without ever feeling gimmicky. Everything just worked.
This is easily one of the best books I’ve read all year. I loved every aspect of the story—the characters, the themes, the emotion, the writing, all of it. If you're drawn to character-driven stories with heart, mystery, and a touch of the stars, Lines Between Stars is an absolute must-read.
A.J. Lexa's "Lines Between Stars" is an absolutely wonderful fantasy read that truly shines! From the very first page, readers are drawn into a magical new world that is both vividly imagined and incredibly immersive.
Lexa's talent for crafting detailed and easy-to-follow characters is evident throughout the narrative. Each character feels authentic, making their journeys and struggles deeply engaging. The character development is particularly enjoyable, as you watch them grow and evolve within this captivating setting.
This book is a testament to A.J. Lexa's burgeoning talent. If you're looking for a fantasy novel that delivers on world-building, character depth, and an enchanting story, "Lines Between Stars" is a must-read. I'm eagerly anticipating A.J. Lexa's future books – she is truly a bright talent in the fantasy genre!
As someone who is obsessed with astrology, A.J. Lexa's debut novel was such a treat and one hell of a ride. First I'd like to mention the prose. A.J. Lexa has such mastery of her craft and her voice. The tone, cadence, and colorful use of language had me gripped from the first page. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic of the FMC and MMC--their chemistry palpable from their first interaction and that curiosity compelled me further and further. With zodiacs being such strong archetypes, it was interesting seeing them made manifest and through the eyes of someone who might experience them differently. I loved the mystery/interactive portions of the book, where I'd try and decipher which Zodiac I was meeting based on their powers. With a rich, vibrant world, in-depth lore, and an exciting and original magic system, this book is the perfect choice for lovers of astrology and fantasy.
What an interesting and fresh urban fantasy debut by A.J. Lexa. Lines between stars introduces a unique magic system, rich intricate world building and compelling characters.
I love the reincarnation aspect to the plot ,though I did at times find it a bit hard to follow, it does get easier as you go along. It’s very fast paced, there’s a lot to take in at the beginning and so much to learn about the world and the characters, which can be a little overwhelming but it is a very original novel with many layers.
If you are into zodiac star signs, gods and goddesses, mythology and reincarnation then this is the book for you. I look forward to seeing what this writer brings us in the future.
This book surprised me in the best way. The writing was beautiful, it had that soft, emotional style that really stays with you. The whole vibe was different from what I usually read, but I loved it. The setting felt special, and the zodiac part gave it an extra layer that made it more interesting without being confusing. I liked how the emotions were quiet but strong. Everything felt meaningful, not just dramatic for no reason. The characters were well written and stayed in my mind after finishing. Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much, but I did. Totally worth reading. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review.
Lines Between Stars by A.J. Lexa is a magical novel about the Zodiacs we see in the heavens. Only this time they are not lines between stars, they are real. When Reyna learns she is one of them, she will learn what it means.
This novel was so imaginative, unlike any novel I have read before. Reading about stars who are real, for me that was awesome, because I watch the sky very often. This debut novel is fantastic and the world-building is amazing. The magic system is well developed and the main characters are coming across so very well. The writing style is flowing and it a fast-paced story. The plot and story-line are unique.
If you want to read a unique fantasy novel, this is it! Once you start reading, you cannot stop. I enjoyed reading Lines Between Stars a lot.
I love the idea of Zodiac and how it was being used in this storyline. The overall feel worked with the urban fantasy element and how it was used in this universe. I was engaged with the way the characters were written and how it was used during this. A. J. Lexa has a strong writing style and was able to create this overall in the world. It worked as a forbidden love and was glad everything worked in this universe.

I really enjoyed this book, I loved how the zodiacs, underworld, gods and goddesses where all set out and how each zodiac had a role. I loved the back and forth between Rayna and her memories of being cancer and how they merged towards the end. I enjoyed all the characters and no one was who you seemed to think, there were ups and downs, feelings of betrayal, old and new love interests. You never knew what way it was going. There was a beautiful found family and some loss that made me want to cry. Overall I hope there is another.

Wow this book was a different take on magic/fantasy but in a good way… with zodiacs which was really cool. I loved this story and I’m so glad it didn’t leave me on a cliffhanger 😅 Brax and Reyna’s story ugh I loved it so much and I’m so glad brax finally got the girl! It was so wholesome and I love them so much. I love all the characters as well well except maybe the dark god and the goodness I didn’t like them too much but alas they got the life they deserved to say the least. This was a great story and I’m so excited I got to read it! Everyone make sure you add this your TBR!
Incredibly riveting! Once you start this book, you cannot put it down until you devour it.
It has everything I love, and I honestly cannot express just how much I enjoyed this book.
The writing was immaculate, the relationship between the characters (especially Reyna and Brax) is *chefs kiss*, the worldbuilding is fabulous, and ughhh I could go on and on about this book.
🤝Zodiac Characters 🤝Out of this World 🤝Gods 🤝Reincarnation 🤝Twists that will leave you reeling.
Thank you so much AJ Lexa for an earc for an honest review.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. The following review represents my honest opinion.
My goodness, I love this book. From the concept to the characters, I am completely in love with the story Lexa has crafted. The worldbuilding alone was absolutely stunning. I genuinely can't wait to see what Lexa publishes next because you best believe I will be the first to sign up for an ARC.
Fabulous Fantasy and Raging Romance! This book brings the Zodiacs to a whole new level. The characters are fun and relatable. There are twists and turns along with a magical new world. A.J. Lexa brings this solar system to life with vivid imagery and amazingly creative concepts. I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes fantasy, romance, and especially those that like both!
Some sex but not spicy (short scenes not explicitly graphic), male female, 3rd person multiple point of view (but mostly female lead), urban fantasy, contemporary romance. I didn't know this was a debut novel and I'm impressed. I enjoyed this author's writing style and the worldbuilding was very good. I'd definitely read more from this author.
I enjoyed this book very much!! It is not like anything I have ever read and I think it is very interesting because there isn’t make books about the zodiacs at least that I have read! My favorite thing was how he would call her sunshine ☀️ I did also enjoy the style of writing very detailed.
Lines Between Stars was such a great fantasy read! I was completely pulled into this incredible story about reincarnation and zodiacs. I absolutely loved the action scenes, the betrayal and the spicy scenes! There were so many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat !
I LOVED it. And that’s coming from someone who is normally a self help/personal development reader so this genre was out of my norm but it kept me so invested! The writing was so descriptive I could picture it so well in my head. Perfect ending too. Can’t wait to see what A.J. Lexa does next!
AJ Lexa, new author and friend, captures a new kind of fantasy/romantic storytelling here. The zodiacs are the characters, not the shapes in the sky, and they have complex lives and histories. I loved the concept and the characters were fun to get to know. Great first book for Lexa!
