2 Samuel: Your Kingdom Come

Rate this book
King David stands as one of the most important figures of world history. From children’s storybooks to Michelangelo’s famous statue, ancient Israel’s most famous king is still remembered and recognized by people around the world three thousand years after he lived. In this commentary on the book of 2 Samuel, professor and former pastor John Woodhouse helps readers deepen their understanding of David’s tumultuous reign by highlighting his place in salvation history―a history that began with Israel but now encompasses God’s plan for the whole world. What’s more, he shows that the concept of the kingdom of God is crucial to the whole storyline of the Bible . . . and for our lives today. Designed as a trustworthy resource for pastors who preach and teach on a regular basis, this commentary makes the case that David’s story is relevant because it lays the crucial foundation for the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, “the Son of David.” Part of the Preaching the Word series.

My wife and I have read one chapter a week of this book for the last year or so. It's fantastic. We learned so much about 2 Samuel, and have come to appreciate the work of Jesus even more through Woodhouse's hard work at showing us how this part of the Old Testament is fulfilled in him.

I love how each chapter within the commentary reads like a pastoral address, and yet it contains all of the details you'd hope to find in a detailed commentary as well. The result is a work that's engaging, edifying, and extremely helpful practically in doing detailed work on the text and book.

Highly recommended. As is his commentary on 1 Samuel.

This is the second R. Kent Hughes commentary I've read. I'm learning that when studying the Bible, this is how I prefer to read it. These commentaries highlight the Scripture in small portions, and offer further explanation of the events happening, as well as any necessary explanation of Hebrew words mentioned. As far as commentaries go, these are ones that are thorough yet ununderstandable. I highly recommend these commentaries if you're looking to further your understanding of the Bible.

I leaned heavily on Woodhouse during my study of Samuel. It is not so academic that it is unapproachable, yet covers the themes in a very pastoral manner. Sound teaching, accessible, yet not a simple overview. Woodhouse is concerned about souls, not technical details. Very helpful, especially to pastors.

Excellent. If you're a preacher/teacher, this book will be worth your time. Surprisingly, it doesn't always shy away from some of the more difficult theological/textual issues in 2 Samuel. Very helpful.
