We survived the invasion and beat the aliens. But they left something behind…
I was born to protect. I’m a Connors, a soldier like my father before me, and I’m the medic for Hunter Squad. Every time we go out to hunt the mutated monsters the aliens left behind, I’m there to treat anyone who gets hurt.
But sometimes, I can’t always save everyone, and that haunts me.
When Hunter Squad is called out to rescue two missing boys, I’ll do anything to bring them home alive. Even work with our brand-new recruit, Jessica Ramos.
I’m not convinced she’s the right fit for the team, but she’s an expert when it comes to monsters. The creatures are exhibiting dangerous new behaviors, and we have to stop them. Whatever it takes.
Working alongside Jess, everything about her gets under my her confidence, her intelligence, her fit, curvy body, and her damn freckles.
When old memories come back to haunt me, it’s Jess who helps me. Jess who draws me in a way no woman ever has. I can’t afford to let myself care for her.

If Ms. Hackett has ever thought about doing her next series about the children of Hunter Squad members (i.e., the grandchildren of the Hell Squad members and company), you can absolutely count on me to read that series too! One of the things I love about this new series is the cameos by the Hell Squad members, another is its covers. Between one thing and another: the interconnected plots have the pull of a black hole. The universe she's created, in a post-apocalyptic Australia that has survived the invasion of the Gizzida, an extraterrestrial species of lizard-like beings, is incredible. And her characters, wow! Her characters are strong, loyal, and unbreakable, just the kind of people we'd all like to have as friends. Now, a little warning/tip: if you don't like sex scenes, you can just skip them and continue enjoying the story.
I found this one to be a rather unremarkable second entry to this series. I didn’t hate it and certainly enjoyed the theme of continuing to figure out what is happening with the monsters that had been left on Earth. The sex and romance happened a bit too quickly, and all of a sudden, they were in love. I could have used slightly more struggle before the “love.”
I do know that a majority of this author’s novels are quick and fast, but usually, a bit more relationship building happens. This seemed to be lacking in that.
Won’t put me off continuing with the series. Hopefully, the next one has a bit more to it. Based on the cliffhanger at the end of this one, it looks like it’ll be a good one!
Post apocalyptic sci-fi romance. Quick easy read. Probably closer to 3.5 stars than 4 but I rounded up, it wasn’t some great book, but it was entertaining, and I look forward to the next in the series. I actually think this series could make a good tv show.
The first book in the Hunter Squad series, Jameson, set up this world as it is 30 years after the Hell Squad series came to its explosive Independence Day style ending. This second book sets up the new BIG BAD, the whoever/whatever that is somehow managing to train bands of formerly dumb and disorganized Gizzida/terran hybrids into teams capable of planning, coordinating and outright luring the human defenders into what someone or something hopes they can turn into a no-win scenario – for the humans.
In other words, the fragile – not exactly peace but not outright war – that has existed since the “pure” Gizzida got knocked back into space is heating up from a simmer back to a boil. The hybrids aren’t merely on the move – they are on the attack. And they are suddenly a whole lot better at that than they used to be – which is absolutely not a good thing for the slowly rebuilding human population.
Hunter Squad, made up of the literal ‘next generation’ of the Hell Squad, has the necessary but unenviable task of hunting down packs of Gizzida/terran hybrids who are attacking human settlements. While that’s been their job for a while, it’s only on this particular hunt that they realize that lone humans have been disappearing on an increasing basis over the past several months – because they find out what happened to a few of them and it isn’t pretty.
It’s more like Shelob in The Two Towers – only worse. Because Shelob’s depredations were mostly – not totally but mostly – about the great spider protecting her own territory and maintaining her own food supply. Nature may be red in tooth and claw, but that’s what nature is supposed to be – even if humans still end up on the sharp and pointy end of that cliche a lot more than they’s like.
The unnatural spiderweb-like fuckery that Hunter Squad discovers in this second entry in the series doesn’t seem to be about preserving food – but it might be about preserving specimens for exactly the sort of lab experiments that the Gizzida used to do. The kind of experiments that created the hybrids that Hunter Squad is still fighting 30 years later.
Just as the overall situation is getting darker and more dangerous, a bright, hot light blazes through this story in the burn-the-sheets sex-into-love romance between Hunter Squad’s medic, North Connors, and the squad’s newest member, Jessica Ramos.
She doesn’t want to mess up her just barely started membership in Hunter Squad. It took a lot of time and effort to get from North America to Australia, and she has a lot of important research to do on the hybrids. She can’t afford to get sidetracked by a handsome face and the body to go with it.
Especially when that handsome face seems to scrunch up in distaste every time North lays eyes on her. She’s not remotely interested in a personal relationship with someone who can’t seem to stand her presence.
It’s going to take a crisis – or two or three – for North and Jessica to figure out that they’ve been reading each other’s signals very, very wrong all along.
Escape Rating B: As with Jameson, and with the original Hell Squad series, this story runs along on two distinct tracks that intersect at – ahem – climactic moments. There’s the big, overarching plot of the series, and then there’s the romance in this particular ‘chapter’ of that story.
The romance in this one is between North Connors, son of Ash Connors and Marin Mitchell, and Jessica Ramos, one of Cruz Ramos’ cousins from North America. So they both have history to live up to, which is clearly going to be a theme of this series. North is a medic, and Jessica hunts monsters in order to study them.
This isn’t exactly a relationship made in heaven – at least not at the beginning. He has demons when it comes to not being able to save ALL his patients. He’s afraid to get close to anyone – and he’s a bit of a dick about it because Jessica gets under his skin in ways he’s not comfortable with.
Jessica may be attracted to what he looks like, but his behavior is off-putting, because, well, he’s being a dick in ways that make her believe he doesn’t have any faith in her abilities. That they fall into bed anyway and eventually into love isn’t a surprise, exactly, but damn it happened really fast. I liked the romance in Jameson better because it wasn’t instalove the way this one turned out to be.
Very much on my other hand, I’m every bit as fascinated with the overall plot as I was with the first series. It makes so much sense that, just as the humans are rebuilding, the hybrids are as well. The invading Gizzida were just that, invaders from another world. They wanted to strip Earth of its resources and leave an empty husk behind. They HAD to be fought.
But the hybrids they left behind are entirely other matter. They weren’t Gizzida enough to die when the anti-Gizzida device went off, but they’re sure not acting like they are willing to coexist peacefully either. We don’t yet know what their actual imperative is – but I expect we’re about to find out.
Which is the scary but fun part of this series. The hybrids look like they’re experimenting on humans – both in the sense of how the humans react to threats and campaigns, and quite possibly in the sense of turning some into lab rats for nefarious and/or deadly purposes.
We certainly get hints of an intelligent hybrid watching from the shadows. And I’ll admit to wondering just how hybrid that hybrid is. There are other frightening possibilities which I can’t wait for the author to explore in later books in this series.
Based on hints at the end of this story, it’s clear that the next romance will be between quadcopter pilot Colbie Erickson and her Hunter Squad teammate Marc Jackson. And that their adventure is going to take them into the heart of at least one hybrid base or experimental lab – as well as deep into each other’s hearts. I’m looking forward to getting a glimpse of whoever or whatever is behind the uptick in monster intelligence and capability in the coming books in the series.
But that’s going to be a while, because the author’s next several books look like they will be contemporary romance and romantic suspense. As always, I’m looking forward to whatever romantic reading adventures this author is sending my way in the months to come!
Series: Hunter Squad #2 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
North Conners is a soldier like his father before him. He is a medic for Hunter Squad and is determined to bring down the monsters and keep everyone safe. When two boys go missing, Hunter Squad is tasked with finding them and North is determined to save them in time. Even if it means working with the new recruit, Jessica Ramos, who he doesn’t trust but can’t stop thinking about.
North is the son of Ash and Marin and has followed in his father’s footsteps of being a soldier and a doctor. He is protective, especially towards children, and is struggling with a new recruit on the team because he is afraid it will mess up the dynamic of the team. He quickly realizes though that Jess can hold her own and has no problem pushing back against men who try to protect her.
Jess Ramos has recently moved to Australia to join Hunter Squad. She is a distant cousin of Cruz (Hell Squad #2). She has spent her life proving to others, mainly men, that she is capable of being on the hunter squads and that she doesn’t need protecting. Jess was a very interesting heroine because not only was she badass but she also was researching the monsters. I liked this blend of scientist and soldier.
North and Jess have a very fast paced relationship. They are both attracted to each other from the beginning but they try to fight it. But after one mission together that quickly goes out the window and they can't seem to keep their hands off each other. While I did enjoy their relationship, and the story overall, I do wish we had seen a little more relationship building between these two, especially since North didn’t trust her in the beginning.
Overall, this was another enjoyable Hunter Squad book. I am very interested in reading more and seeing who falls next and how they relate to the previous Hell Squad couples. Also, I really enjoyed the brief cameo of Marcus, Cruz and Finn helping on a mission.
TW: child abduction mentioned; death of children discussed; PTSD and nightmares; death of parents mentioned;
*ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.*
Things are heating up for the Hunter Squad crew. I'm talking in more than just the relationship department, too. They're seeing more instances where the hybrids left behind by the Gizzida are banding together and working cooperatively. Which is not great for the human survivors, quite frankly. Because these hybrids are grabbing individuals to use for unknown (for now!) purposes, but when the humans (and animals) are kept in a sort of stasis in cocoons, I can't imagine ANYTHING good coming from that.
Good thing new recruit Jess Ramos is good at cataloging and deciphering behaviors. She might not know what's going on yet, but she has the brains and experience to help figure it out. While most of the HS crew accept her pretty quickly, North is a little more guarded. In part because he's drawn to her and in part because he doesn't want to be. After all, being distracted in the field can cost one of his fellow squad mates their lives.
And that's not something North is willing to face.
BUT...the big guy is VERY attracted to Jess. Not only is she smart and a good soldier, she sees through him in a way he's not used to. She's there when he needs her and her competence starts to chip away at the wall he's built around his heart.
A few familiar faces (I do love the OG HS crew popping up), some daring rescues, hybrids showing some unsettling planning abilities, a man who fights hard and loves harder, and a lady who is finding her groove with the HS crew (and with her new hunny bunny)!
There are some spoilers ahead so read with care. I can't believe be how much I miss the u diverse of Hell Squad until revisiting it in book 1 and now boom 2. I'm fully invested and can't wait to read the next in the series. Even though its been 30years since the original album Grizida invasion the characters I loved from the first series are still alive , well and now its their children that have taken up the mantle of rebuilding earth and keeping her safe. The Grizida might be gone but they've left some very scary monsters behind. Monsters that are mutating and evolving and they seem to be more intelligent and Malevolent then ever. I wonder if maybe a dew of the originals did not die and are creating new horrible monsters or is it evolution? In this book North Conners who is Hunter Squad's medic is in the spotlight. He doesn't get close because the world around him is dangerous and if you care or love too much you just might not recover from the pain. And that Philosophy has worked for him up until he met Jess Ramos. She's Cruz's cousin and she's a scientist as well as a soldier. She's come to help then learn more about the monster because they are adapting and changing become more dangerous. Sparks fly when. North and Jess meet and North does everything in his power to stay away and not care, but sometimes Terrible happens that Brings up horrible memories and Jess and North have to trust and work closely together. Walls crumble amidst danger and both realize the o KY real thing that worth fighting for is the ones you love. So good I love the series so far and can't wait for the next book. Highly recommend🌟💖🔥🌟💖🌟🌟 🔥💖💖🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥💖🌟🌟💖🔥
Not run-of-the-mill monsters anymore! Hunter Squad is down a man, and all the newbies have bailed after a few days on the job, until a tough, highly trained gal from America comes to Australia. Jessica (Jess) Ramos is a cousin to Cruz Ramos from the infamous Hell Squad. Jess is studying the large variety of monsters the aliens created 30 years ago; something is changing, and they seem to be evolving. North Conners is Hunter Squads' medic. He’s a trained Doctor but chooses to work with his lifelong friends, hunting these abominations. North is not comfortable with Jess. He doesn’t think this tiny woman can do the job, but boy, is he surprised by her abilities. But there’s more to it…he can’t stop looking at her…wanting her. North is uncomfortable around Jess because she means something to him, but he’s afraid to commit. Jess is attracted to North, too. But falling in love amidst the debris and blood and guts is what they do. The team has a tough job to do that is only getting worse because the monsters are evolving. In their travels searching for monsters and the humans that have been taken, we get glimpses of the destruction that still prevails over the land 30 years later. There’s still a lot of work to do. The Hunter Squad team is made up of children (though not kids anymore) from the original fighting teams, Hell Squad, Squad 9, and the Berserkers, and some of these “old timers” are in this story. I love that the original warriors are still fighting and influencing the reconstruction of Sydney. I am really into this series. Linda
North is an awesome character. He’s the son of two protagonists from an earlier series, and it’s fun to see how life goes on and the years march ever forward as well. He’s the team doctor for Hunter Squad. Jessica Ramos is the niece of a protagonist from a prior story as well, and her uncle is good friends with North’s parents. What a community! She’s in Australia (moved from North America) because she’s been studying the monsters that were left behind when the Gizzida (huge bug-like alien invaders) were defeated. She’s also filling in an empty spot in the Hunter Squad lineup. It takes some time for North to reach the place where he trusts her, but he finally gets there after she proves herself a few times. Macho guys can be that way…
As I’m sure you can image, there are several battles in this story. Each time the Hunter Squad fights the monsters, they learn some new and relevant information that could help them win future battles. The new info discovered in this story seems to put Hunter Squad at a disadvantage for now. They will need to figure out how to overcome this deficiency if they are each hoping for an HEA ending before the series concludes.
This author does a good job of creating and describing the plethora of monsters that Hunter Squad encounters, but the stories are somewhat predictable. That’s why I dropped one star from my rating. It’s still enormously entertaining and fun to read each story, and I love the interconnectedness of it all! There’s always plenty of excitement, danger, and thrills in each story.
In North, the second instalment of the Hunter Squad, we catch up with Hunter squad again and their continuing fight against the strange, mutated monsters that the alien invaders, the Gizzida left behind. This time the focus is on North Connors and Jessica Ramos. North is a soldier and medic for Hunter Squad. He has some demons to deal with especially when they are called to rescue two missing boys. Jessica Ramos has recently moved to Australia to join Hunter Squad, and she made a very brief appearance at the end of the first book. North didn’t like her then and still doesn’t like her, but don’t they say there’s a thin line between love and hate?! Jessica is a distant cousin of Cruz from the origin series - Hell Squad. She is a capable soldier and also a scientist. She’s here to study the monsters and try to find out why and how they are communicating as well as determine anything else that can help Hunter Squad in their fight against them. Her skillset is definitely a needed one considering the attacks by the monsters have been increasing. The relationship develops quite quickly, and I would have liked to see a little more relationship building between these two, especially because of the friction at the beginning. These stories are novellas, and I really wish for longer more developed storylines with more depth and interaction as well as a longer story thread. I am interested in learning much more about these monsters and what they are up to. Can’t wait for the next instalment in the series!
This is an incredible short story. But still great story with solid characters and hints of things to come. Not only are they encountering monsters that communicate with each other and with other monster species but the some monsters have evolved a method of keeping prey alive and in stasis protected in a cocoon. Also monster dogs are leading squads into traps where they get attacked by huge numbers of monsters that were undetected by heat signatures.
People have been disappearing randomly around the site of Dawn, where the squads live. These missing people had only come to light when the Hunter Squad encountered the cocoons the first time, when they found a woman dead in one the cocoons. The generals in charge started checking in with surrounding outposts.
The squad have also seen a Watcher… tall humanoid creature possibly with wings that observes their fights, then vanishes. Exploding acid filled spiders and dogs never gets old…
Of course, North and Jess get together and you can see that there is future romances mapped out for Marc and Colbie, Zeke and Kai’s sister… Why is there only ONE Hunter squad? One their day off where everyone is drinking and letting their hair down, when they get called out… why isn’t there another squad?

Another great story following a 2nd generation of heroes. It started originally in Hell Squad when aliens attacked earth and it continues with their children (Hunter Squad) hunting down the mutants evolving after the aliens were eradicated. North, our hero, is a 2nd generation alien hunter & medic called and Jess, the heroine, is the newest rookie Hunter Squad member/ researcher. As usual, a well written and fun story following two very cool people fighting their attraction to each other while battling mutant life forms out to hurt humans. In addition, a sinister new concept is floated- that these alien mutations just might be evolving - a totally upgraded threat emerging... I can't wait to see where Anna Hackett takes this new twist in the fight for survival. Reading the entire series isn't necessary, but will triple the enjoyment of these books:) It was my pleasure to read and review.
Such a fun idea to revisit this world left devastated by an attempted alien invasion . Here we are back with the next generation and this time it’s North who is left reeling when a new member of Hunter squad rocks up ! Jess doesn’t need a man to protect her and she knows she deserves respect from her team mates but boy is North a tempting conundrum . Oh who am I kidding? This couple light up the pages pretty quickly which was a little bit of a shame as I quite enjoyed Norths trepidation about Jess , plus his “demons” adding quite a bit of depth to the overall story . Cameo appearances are sure to delight fans of the original Hell Squad and as usual this was a cracking, fast paced ride that definitely left me wanting to continue the journey. This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and feelings are honest and I believe fair
Picking up from where Jameson left off, we see new member of Hunter Squad Jess trying to fit in with her new squad, but the team doctor, North, isn’t so sure she will fit in. Of course, that might be the attraction her feels for her making him slightly biased. Jess is trying to study the monsters and their aberrant behaviour, but the monsters are up to something, and their antics are keeping Hunter Squad on their toes. An enjoyable and quick read, this immerses us even further in the post-hell squad world. With quite a few cameos from the original crew, this is an entertaining read that fans of the original series, and those who enjoy post apocalyptic SFR will all enjoy. Warning! This book ends on a book hook cliffhanger- if you don’t want to read a cliffhanger, you can skip the last section of the final chapter.
Hunter Squad is shaping up to be just as awesome as Hell Squad. This dystopian Earth/Alien Invasion world is just so chockfull of action, adventure and these perfect little gems of romance.
North is the team medic, he is an actual doctor but prefers to be out in the wilds with his team. He takes time to warm up to new people - in this brave new world you have to trust those around you to have your back. He's really not sure about the new recruit. She may be related to his "uncle" but that's not speeding up his trust any!
Jessica has only recently arrived from the USA and she brings different experiences and an extensive knowledge of the various hybrids the Gizzida created and then left to terrorise what was left of the Earth population. She used to having to be twice the soldier as the men around - misogyny still finds a way! But on a mission to save two lost boys, Jess and North come to an "understanding".
The attraction between these two is instant and intense. Those around them can see it coming from a mile off, even whilst these two deny, deny deny. The romance flows seamlessly into the action scenes and Jess is a total bada$$ scientist. The banter between the new team is awesome and witty and you just get "found family" vibes from them.
I can't wait to meet more of the team and see how accurate all the little teases of possible future couples are!
TW: child abduction/death of a teenager/death of parents/ptsd/mental health + nightmares
..she never expected to find love and definitely not with a team-mate. But Jess is fierce, smart, driven and determined, she knows it's not smart but she also knows what she feels for the wounded warrior is more than a fling, it's big, real and forever. Very little scares North, huge hybrid monsters trying to kill them...no problem, he'll fight them head on. But losing an injured patient, especially a child and his feelings for Jess both terrify him. They are both so big and uncontrollable. But he mans up and embraces his love for Jess and the future they have together. I read this on Kindle Unlimited and look forward to more from Hunter Squad, especially Marcus and Colbie's book
This story is full of action, suspense, adventure, and plenty of the kind of monsters that give you nightmares. The attraction between Jess and North was strong, and I really liked Jess's character—a determined, self-confident woman who knew what she had to do. I was kept impressed by the descriptions and narrations, attentive to everything that moved. Suspense and more suspense! There were several scenes that I found emotional, and others where I found myself cheering on the characters. There was so much entertainment that I couldn't get bored. I love these interesting stories where fiction gets my mind racing.
This is another wonderful and exciting next generation of Hell Squad stories. Once again, the author really pulled me in with the engaging characters, drama, danger, mystery and hot chemistry. North and Jess were fab together and while neither was looking for someone to love, they couldn't help falling for each other ;) She was incredibly strong and smart. He was a healer, a soldier, a protector... The intense action from the mutated creatures had me on the edge of my seat and gasping with shock... I loved seeing Marcus and Cruz again, supporting the 'kids' ;) Just such a thrilling reading ride for a high stakes survival story. I loved it and can't wait for the next book :D
Ms. Hackett has done it again, and I can't imagine how she can keep up. I loved North and how brokenhearted that he lost a sixteen year old boy losing his life as he only wanted to by his girlfriend a present. He was taken by alien creatures when they invaded Earth. Teams of fighters were fighting back, saving humans and losing others. North was part of Hunter Squad, and Jess had she transferred to Australia from the States. I loved Jess who took no bull and went off on the members of her team saving her as she could hold her on. It appears that this is book two and I never read book one.
Anna did it again. She wrote a story that's exciting, full of action, friendship, and love. And so hard to put down. Anna has imagined scary, smart monsters that the team has to bring down. North doesn't think Jess should be on the team, but maybe it's only because he's drawn to her and doesn't want to be. I enjoyed the way they interacted with each other and how North fought his feelings for so long.
I'm looking forward to seeing Jess and North pop up in future books as they continue learning about the new monsters, and I can't wait to read about the next couple.
Excellent second book in Hacker's new Hunter Squad series. Noah is medic for the team, and Jess is the newest member of the squad. She can take care of herself, but Noah is determined to protect her from the monsters they fight, and Jess is just as determined to stand her ground.
Lots of monster fighting, rescuing, teasing, and wowzers! The heat between Noah and Jess, when they aren't fighting, singed my fingers as I rapidly swiped the pages to read what happened next. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
It's not one, but I'd count this as a short story. It's pretty insta-lovey and everything happens quickly from the way they go from mutual wariness to instantly sleeping together, to arguing to apologizing and moving past it, to having some great understanding of each other and wanting to move in together. But I was in the mood for a post-apocalyptic romance that I haven't already read and this hit the spot. I'd be interested in reading the next ones that come out. The aliens/creatures were interesting but we don't know enough about them yet. Ends on an HFN.
North returns us to the post-apocalyptic world after an alien invasion but this time Hunter Squad is fighting off the animals(?) they left behind. Something else is going on and is foreshadowed throughout the book but we find out only bits and pieces here.
Meanwhile American fighter Jess has joined Hunter Squad. This book tells the story of how North and Jess navigate their way to love in extreme circumstances.
Packed with all the action and drama you expect in an Anna Hackett book. North does not disappoint.
North and Jess are great together! Anna you did it again, Thank you!
Love this next generation of Hell Squad and reading about the monsters left from the invasion. Just love seeing some of the guys from Hell Squad and how they are supporting this next generation. Wonderful story with the adventure and romance you expect from Anna Hackett. Great read and can't wait for the next book. 🔥🎉💜😺🌟
Romantic and exciting! North had locked his heart away after losing a patient when he first joined Hunter Squad as a new doctor! Jess joined from California to get away from the reminders of her parent's death. There was a lot of tension between jess and Hunter when they first met, but most of it was North rejecting his attraction to her. This situation would have to resolve itself one way or another if they were going to work together! Great read!
Hunter Squad book 2. North is a fantastic read. Battling aliens, nightmares and his feelings for the new recruit. Jess, the new recruit, is a badass with a lot to prove. These two have chemistry galore and they fall hard for each other. Dramatic and angsty. Action packed and oh so tingle worthy. Loved seeing characters from Hell Squad series. If you liked Hell Squad, you'll love Hunter Squad.
Way to leave us hanging…. But no really this series is fantastic!!!! Like amazing!!! One small request please… can we get a break down in the front of Hell squads couple and whose kids are who sorry it’s been a bit I think I should have done a reread but I couldn’t delay that long to start this series more like binge the first two books in two days.
Ok so I enjoyed this one a bit less then the first one. I'm not sure why I was just a bit less engaged with North's character then I was with Jameson. I was hoping for a bit more parent interaction in this one since I love seeing the cameos of them popping up. Still a good story with some further build up to the idea that the hunters are possibly either evolving or learning or something. So we'll see where book 3 leads.
