Magick

Rate this book
It takes something more powerful than Merewin's magick to heal the Viking warrior’s soul.

Fury and guilt assail Hauk, a fierce Viking warrior, after he allows false healers to “cure” his family to death. When he’s ordered to capture the Great Witch of the Woods in Northumbria for his king, he doesn’t anticipate that his hatred for all things magick would be challenged by a long-legged beauty with sparking green eyes.

Strong-willed and daring, Merewin doesn’t cower from the warriors who storm her homeland, stealing her away to a land across the sea. But when she learns that her purpose is to heal a child with her magical healing powers, her fear of failure wages war against her resilient spirit.

Strong wills clash as Merewin and Hauk battle their instant attraction. Can Hauk trust a healer with his remaining family? Can Merewin conquer her own pride to love this powerful man who possesses an unacknowledged magick of his own? In the end Merewin and Hauk must put their faith in each other and in their love. For love is the only magick that can heal someone’s soul.

With a similar beginning to Prophecy, a woman is desperate to save her daughters from dark forces so she provides each of them with one of her powers and then sends them through time. Merewin lands in the time of Viking raids and has her mother's healing abilities. A Viking warrior named Hauk is sent to find Merewin after his king hears of her magickal healing abilities - he has a sickly child and has already lost two children to the same illness. Hauk does not believe in magick after trusting false healers to heal his family resulting in their deaths but does as he is told, hunting down Merewin and bringing her to his village.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and the depth that they had. I liked how Hauk's beliefs were challenged and how his daughter Della was able to heal through knowing Merewin's past. I really liked the tension between Hauk and Merewin - he doesn't want her because of her supposed magick and she doesn't want him because he's stolen her from her home but neither of them can deny the attraction between them. This series features a character for the overarching plot that does quite a bit of meddling for the sake of the plot and she is honestly my least favorite part of the series. The characters are supposedly soulmates, but they take quite a bit of nudging from her to work out, and I feel like things between soulmates should be easier than that. This character at one point does admit that she had done too much meddling with Serena in the previous book which I thought was a good moment.

Another 5 star for this series. This series and the Brothers of Soloway Moss both seem to have more energy to them. I like this series which is a historical romance with some magic. Merewin and Hauk are in the early 11th century and set mostly in the Danes area. The author has a content warning at the beginning about threat of SA (not from hero) and explains that it falls in line with thralls at that time period.

Merewin is taken to heal an important family member of a local ruler for the Danes. It’s not a willing, it’s a you’re captured and my thrall kind of situation. Thus begins Hauk and Merewin who have a shaky start obviously due to that but trust slowly builds. Hauk leaves her two times - the first seemed a sort of clearing his head moment. Merewin’s healing magic is central to the story and after a big sacrifice, she is freed from being a thrall (I mean we knew this was going to happen but still marking as spoilers for that). Their marriage happens (not at the end - so it definitely isn’t rushed) and then he briefly leaves her a second time, which I was yelling at him to take her, but it served to have the villains have their moments. There’s a male and female villain working together for different purposes.

Hauk realizes his mistake and there’s a bit of groveling and healing but it all works out for a great HEA

Hauk is a big possessive Dane but a kind of cinnamon roll under it all. Merewin is pragmatic and good at breaking down her and Hauk’s barriers holding them back.

I’m already looking forward to the rest of this series. It’s nice to have ‘HR magic’ which is a hard niche subgenre to find but which I really enjoy!

There is an overarching storyline so it would be good to read the first book to understand some central characters and what’s going on. But it can be read stand alone if you just want a Viking hr book with magic.

Magick

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hauk is a fierce Viking warrior who doesn't believe in magic anymore. He paid false healers to cure his family, but they all died except for his daughter Dalla. So when he is ordered to go to Northumbria and capture the Great Witch of the Woods by his king, he doesn't anticipate that his hatred for all things magik would be challenged by a beautiful long legged woman with sparkling green eyes.

Merewin is strong willed and will not cower from the Viking warriors who invade her homeland, and take her away to their land across the sea. But when she learns that they have taken her to heal a child with her magical healing powers, her fear of failure knows no bounds.

Two people from different lands will clash harder than ever in this story of love and reslilance. But will they win their war? Or will they give up what they've found in eachother?

Eleri Drake is absolutely brilliant. I was astounded by the fact that I couldn't put this book down. There was never a dull moment and just when you thought that you knew what would happen next, you found out that you were wrong. This book was incredible. Hauk was the big Viking warrior who would normally take what he wants without thinking twice and Merewin was a tough woman who would not give up. The end of the book totally blew me away and I'm happy to say this book deserves so much more than the five stars I can give it. Ms. Drake you are a fabulous writer and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
