You may THINK you know what a nightmare is, but…
In one of the best anthologies this group has put out to date (that I’ve read), The Butchered Writers collected 18 amazing tales that offer diverse approaches, content, and styles, all centering on the theme of nightmares. Full disclosure, I contributed to this anthology. So I am not going to review that, but instead focus on the other contributions.
There’s something in here for everyone, whether you’re into splatterpunk, slasher, mind-trips, or just good old-fashioned horror stories. You’ll find it in here. So here are my reactions to each of the stories in this volume:
The Ink That Binds: This anthology starts out strong with a Winona Morris story about a tattoo that brings more than just a cool piece of body art. Misery and violence and trippy-ness all packaged up in a nightmare.
Peyote: Andy H. gets quite trippy and his mind trip. Though I can’t say this plot offers a recommended way for one’s wiping of one’s bum. 😳😆 IYKYK.
Deadly Sleep: Here, DL Garvin offers up some terror with an interesting twist with a series of people dying in their dreams.
A Touch of Darkness: Megan Russ terrified and disturbed me with her heart-breaking and standout tale.
Can I borrow Your Charger?: Joshua Singleton's will give you a short jolt of brutality that ends unexpectedly.
The Awakening: Another stand-out, this time by Sarah Moon, The Awakening creates an atmospheric, slow burn that will BREAK your heart. Really well done.
What I fear: In his first of two stories in this anthology, Thomas Stewart will lay out some terrifying choices for you in this gruesome, chilling story.
Demanufactured/Enslaved: Another favorite for me. Ryan McGregor tells a chilling sci-fi with nightmarish transformations and an interesting ending.
Then Jerry Blaze takes you into legit, hardcore slasher territory in The Stalker.
In
The Sleep Study
, John Russell offered up a fascinating slow burn horror story that really nailed the idea of a character going through a journey. Nicely done for sure.
And then there’s Andy H’s Nightmare Fuel. Clowns. Do I need to say any more? Yeah… I didn’t think so.
Grandpa’s Nightmare War: What starts as a sad tale of a poor vet veers into an expected direction for the family that cares for him in this story by Christopher Ridge.
Tyler Holberry's
A Porcelain Prison
gives you a front row seat to what it looks like when a dream goes badly awry.
Innocence Lost: Colt Henderson weaves one woman’s effort to navigate a nightmarish, Silent Hill-esque mansion.
When Knocks the Nightmare: Zachary Markley has a multi-layered dream and life and narration sequence that will keep your gray cells on their toes.
The Tower of Abhorred Flesh, A Flesh Schism Mythos Story: Trippy, trippy, and drippy. This nightmare, told in Thomas Stewart’s second contribution read like HPL on steroids. Not for the faint of heart for sure.
Darkness Tell Us: Here, Andy H. has a second contribution and it’s an inescapable creature feature type story. Very entertaining.
