Rate this book
The Butchered Writers NIGHTMARES

Do you dare step into the dark? Nightmares is not just a book—it’s a descent into fear itself.

Within these pages lurk eighteen chilling tales, each more terrifying than the last. A whisper in the dark that turns into a scream. Shadows that move when no one is watching. Doors that lead to places you were never meant to find. The Butchered Writers have stitched together a collection of horror so vivid, so unrelenting, it will seep into your mind and fester long after the final page.

These stories will haunt your dreams, but only if you’re lucky. Because some nightmares don’t end when you wake up… they just begin.

Sleep tight.

About the author

The Butchered Writers is a collective of writers and artists from around the world that are joined together by the love of horror. We write horror anthologies. There, done.

Honestly we could stop there, but for the few of you that will read this, you may want to know a little more. There are around 25 members of The Butchered Writers. We've managed to crank out about 14 anthologies in the last year with the title Terror Monthly, and have big plans for the upcoming 2025 year. Most of us chat on Facebook quite often. The conversations there can get chaotic and out of hand very quickly, as you can imagine a group of writers talking about whatever is on their mind. Topics range from food (probably the most popular), to what we're reading, to "is this a good story?", to "you'll never guess what my neighbor just did". But we always come back to horror. It's who we are and it's what we enjoy writing. Whether it's something that screws with your mind, blood and guts, monster, or folk, it doesn't matter. We love it.

So here's the pitch: If you enjoy horror stories, we're your people. Get in touch and we can chat about whatever you want, preferably horror related. Buy a book or two that we've put out. There are fantastic writers among us. The Best of Terror Monthly will be FREE in February 2025 for a month. What better way to start your journey with us than the best stories from our first 13 volumes? Read it. Tell us how much you loved it. Tell us it sucked. Tell us about the one story in the volume you read that turned your stomach.

Look us up on the Terror Monthly FB page for more info.

You may THINK you know what a nightmare is, but…

In one of the best anthologies this group has put out to date (that I’ve read), The Butchered Writers collected 18 amazing tales that offer diverse approaches, content, and styles, all centering on the theme of nightmares. Full disclosure, I contributed to this anthology. So I am not going to review that, but instead focus on the other contributions.

There’s something in here for everyone, whether you’re into splatterpunk, slasher, mind-trips, or just good old-fashioned horror stories. You’ll find it in here. So here are my reactions to each of the stories in this volume:

The Ink That Binds: This anthology starts out strong with a Winona Morris story about a tattoo that brings more than just a cool piece of body art. Misery and violence and trippy-ness all packaged up in a nightmare.

Peyote: Andy H. gets quite trippy and his mind trip. Though I can’t say this plot offers a recommended way for one’s wiping of one’s bum. 😳😆 IYKYK.

Deadly Sleep: Here, DL Garvin offers up some terror with an interesting twist with a series of people dying in their dreams.

A Touch of Darkness: Megan Russ terrified and disturbed me with her heart-breaking and standout tale.

Can I borrow Your Charger?: Joshua Singleton's will give you a short jolt of brutality that ends unexpectedly.

The Awakening: Another stand-out, this time by Sarah Moon, The Awakening creates an atmospheric, slow burn that will BREAK your heart. Really well done.

What I fear: In his first of two stories in this anthology, Thomas Stewart will lay out some terrifying choices for you in this gruesome, chilling story.

Demanufactured/Enslaved: Another favorite for me. Ryan McGregor tells a chilling sci-fi with nightmarish transformations and an interesting ending.

Then Jerry Blaze takes you into legit, hardcore slasher territory in The Stalker.

In The Sleep Study , John Russell offered up a fascinating slow burn horror story that really nailed the idea of a character going through a journey. Nicely done for sure.

And then there’s Andy H’s Nightmare Fuel. Clowns. Do I need to say any more? Yeah… I didn’t think so.

Grandpa’s Nightmare War: What starts as a sad tale of a poor vet veers into an expected direction for the family that cares for him in this story by Christopher Ridge.

Tyler Holberry's A Porcelain Prison gives you a front row seat to what it looks like when a dream goes badly awry.

Innocence Lost: Colt Henderson weaves one woman’s effort to navigate a nightmarish, Silent Hill-esque mansion.

When Knocks the Nightmare: Zachary Markley has a multi-layered dream and life and narration sequence that will keep your gray cells on their toes.

The Tower of Abhorred Flesh, A Flesh Schism Mythos Story: Trippy, trippy, and drippy. This nightmare, told in Thomas Stewart’s second contribution read like HPL on steroids. Not for the faint of heart for sure.

Darkness Tell Us: Here, Andy H. has a second contribution and it’s an inescapable creature feature type story. Very entertaining.

When the veil between reality and our dreams fades to a mist, horror takes over lives, wreaking havoc in a world that was once familiar. What happens when fears that should remain in the back of our minds bleed into the real world?

I enjoyed it overall. No collection will ever be perfect, there were some stories I loved like Deadly Sleep, The Sleep Study and When Knocks the Nightmare and there were others that I dnf’d because the content just wasn’t for me. Now I didn’t DNF because they were bad but I don’t get along well with science fiction or graphic body horror, they just aren’t for me. Give me psychological torture any day and this collection had that in bucketfuls. If you like horror you will like this collection, there truly is something for everyone

Wonderful collection of 18 horror stories. While some very very similar, others followed their own paths. Started off wanting to only read a sample, wound up reading the whole collection.

This is my first Butchered Writers Terror Monthly.

It contains a number of stories about dreams and nightmares. The fantasy ones were a little too weird and occasionally too graphic for me, I preferred the ones set in the real world.

On the whole I enjoyed the stories, I look forward to reading more.

Nightmares is a collection of 18 unique horror stories, each one crafted to terrify you and give you nightmares. I actually really enjoyed each one of the stories. I think this would be great to read around spooky season as a tradition of reading a story a night coming up to halloween. The stories were entertaining and well written for being little short stories. They did give me the chills, especially... clowns... If your looking for some horror or just something to give you nightmarish vibes, definitely check this one out!
