When Gareth Hughes escapes a toxic relationship in Cardiff to temporarily take over a friend’s receptionist job, he’s hoping for a clean break and a fresh start. What he doesn’t expect is to find himself falling for his new boss — or getting caught up in a murder investigation.
Private investigator Scott Parmer quickly learns that there’s more to Gareth’s skills than admin. When whistleblower Beth O’Neil is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the duo must work together to untangle a chilling web of secrets and control.
As their partnership deepens — both professionally and personally — Gareth and Scott must uncover the truth before the killer silences them, too.
Steph started reading at a very young age and quickly fell in love with stories and storytelling. Her debut novel The People We Trust, was a passion project over several years to bring more representation into the murder mystery genre. Throughout many turbulent times in her own life she turned to poetry to help put a voice to the thoughts that whirled around inside her head. The 'Teenager's Guide' series, which consists of three poetry collections, were hugely cathartic to write, and she hopes they're just as cathartic to read.
Wow wow wow! I purchased this book at Steph’s launch party, and I could not put this down. I read it all in one go in its entirety! I loved the romance aspect of Gareth and Scott, and loved Faith. The romance side and the crime investigation side went together so well in this, and neither one took away from the other. I had my suspicions in the book at who was the perpetrator of the murder, and I was ecstatic when I had guessed it correctly, as nothing got given away easily, so it was such a surprise when it was revealed! Absolutely love this book and I cannot wait to hopefully see more of Gareth and Scott! ☺️
Absolutely honoured to have an ARC of S.J Gathercole’s first debut novel.
Gareth, having ended a controlling relationship, must begin his new life as a single man from scratch. As he gradually transforms his new home into a comfortable haven, his best friend Faith presents him with an ideal opportunity to secure a job as an administrative assistant in a private investigation firm. This position is a perfect fit for Faith, as she is taking maternity leave. Gareth, initially feeling nervous, decides that this could be just for him. However, he is then introduced to his new boss, Scott Parmer, and their professional relationship evolves into something more.
Gareth and Scott embark on several undercover case outings, where Gareth discovers a knack for solving mysteries. One case, involving the discovery of a young woman’s body in her home, prompts them to assist the police. Scott’s close friend, Alex, who is working on the case, raises concerns about whether the case can be solved before drastic measures are taken.
This was an absolutely brilliant read. Although I figured it out not too long before the end, it was still unexpected and had a good plot. I thoroughly enjoyed the romantic aspect of this book too, particularly the chemistry between Scott and Gareth.
Overall, a fab read and I would highly recommend! 5⭐️
Genuinely one of the easiest five stars I think I’ve ever given, I’ve never been so invested in a romance! 💕
Gareth and Scott were brought to life so well and truly and the cosy crime and mystery setting was the perfect backdrop.
I love how much these two complete each other and I’m going to need more of them - Steph please write a series!
As for the mystery - expertly done, I was so busy obsessing over the romance that the big reveal crept up on me and I only figured it out moments before Scott and Gareth, and after being handed all the clues 😆 I’d count that as a success 👏🏼
This was such a cute fluffy read (murder investigation aside, of course!). I was so invested and distracted by the relationship between the MMC's that I missed every probable hint towards the culprit and figured it out literal seconds before Gareth and Scott.
One of the aspects that I loved was the balance between the character, relationship and plot development. I only wish it could have been longer as I like the slow burn of falling in love with the characters.
I will say my personal struggles were the setting of my hometown (I was in a club mentioned in the book on Friday night 😅) and workplace romance. As a gal that reads to escape reality, my corporate brain would not shut off going 'my god my hr department would have a field day if this happened at work'.
Overall I would deffo recommend picking this up if your vibes are giggling and kicking your feet at a romance 🤭
The People We Trust follows Gareth who has recently moved to Leeds after leaving an abusive relationship. He gets a new job as Private Investigator Scott Parmer’s new assistant. During Gareth’s first week he becomes embroiled in a local murder case that he and Scott must solve before anyone else gets hurt.
As someone who doesn’t read a lot of crime novels (aka I’ve read The Thursday Murder Club) I really enjoyed this book and think this is because it was such a cosy set up. The addition of a romance plot also helped seal the deal. Gareth and Scott have so much chemistry together and really made me want to read on to see what happened between them (there is some spice in this book!!) - as well as solving the case, obviously👀. I did figure out who the killer was before the grand reveal, which I guess means I could work for Parmer Investigations! Though, I’m sure a reread would make some clues I missed stand out.
Hopefully Parmer Investigations get a second outing!
This book? I loved it! I was lucky enough to be gifted this as an arc by the great S.J. Gathercole and when I picked this book up it was impossible to put it down! ☺️
A gripping mix of mystery and romance that completely pulled me in. I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did 🤩 The bond between the main characters was touching and real, and the mystery kept me guessing. It was well paced and full of subtle clues - I was proud to say I guessed who the killer was just moments before the characters did! This book perfectly balanced the suspense of the mystery as well as the reveal!
Admittedly, this is not my usual genre, but now I’m hooked! Definitely adding mystery-romance to my favorites!👀
Thank you again for this book!! 🥰 I would highly recommend this read to anyone who loves a bit of mystery entwined with romance, I have already recommended it to a few fellow readers 🫶🏼
I don’t often read crime novels, but S.J. Gathercole may have changed my mind! I adored this book. Scott and Gareth are so delightfully written and their story had me hooked from the beginning. I didn’t guess the killer but will definitely be re-reading to pay attention to the clues I missed (and to bathe in the glorious storytelling and relationships between Gareth, Scott, Faith, Alex - the lot!).
I also love how this book centred a queer romance narrative, especially a queer narrative that included a bisexual character. You don’t see these sorts of stories in any literature, let alone crime, so that was incredibly refreshing. The writing of Gareth’s past and its impact on him was very sensitively and accurately written. I’d say it almost seems that him and Scott were made for each other… but I suppose they technically were?
This was such an enjoyable book that I have and will recommend to others. Many congratulations S.J. Gathercole! I can’t wait for more!
I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this in a giveaway. And while I'm usually strictly a fantasy/romance girlie, this was a breath of fresh air.
I absolutely loved Gareth and Scott, the quirks, the anxiety and the unmatched chemistry all felt so natural to read. The romance aspect was perfect for me, I always feel a little bereft if I miss out on chemistry between two wonderful characters so this absolutely scratched that itch.
The plot was charming and exciting and I definitely missed a few hints somewhere because it took me way too learn to solve the mystery!
A cosy crime novel that was definitely out of my comfort zone but I loved every second of.
This book is such a fantastic little treat! It was so enjoyable and such an accessible story where any time you want to put your feet up and relax, this book is the perfect companion. The story has such an original angle, two gay lovers clashing their heads over a murder mystery! And the action packed ending really had me arrested. The conflict between the characters felt really human and even pricked a tear to my eye.
There are some especially wonderful descriptions in here, some of my favourites:
“Gareth couldn’t help but wonder how he kept such a svelte physique when he ate like a horse.” 97
“Liquid steel slid down Gareth’s spine and solidified, forcing his back straight. He slipped behind the cold hard mask…” 120
“‘I know my work might not be as flashy or exciting as yours, but it does matter to me. If you could at least take some interest, instead of zoning out on me or talking about yourself all the time we might actually stand a chance.’” 157
I love how Scott and Gareth learnt to work in tandem! And I have so many questions now.
Do they move in together? Did Gareth end up cleaning Scott’s car? What happened to the killer and his last victim? Will there be a sequel and where can I get a copy?
This book is such a great achievement :) congratulations to the author xx
This book skillfully blends MLM workplace romance with a gripping crime thriller. It beautifully captures the feeling of finding love after escaping a toxic relationship. Gareth and Scott’s chemistry is obvious, and neither the romance nor the crime elements overshadow each other.
It's an easy, enjoyable read with a shocking twist at the end. I look forward to hearing more about Scott and Gareth’s PI adventures. Highly recommended for fans of both genres!
Stepped outside my usual genre with this book and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The characters were complex and well developed, with an air of charm that makes you feel like fast friends. The “who done it” was incredibly thought out and meticulously planned so even before the big reveal the seeds of doubt were planted and beginning to take root. And the emphasis on romantic plot lines felt refreshing and kept the reader engaged with the overall story.
After escaping an abusive relationship, Gareth is after fresh start but he never could imagined that it would come the shape of a handsome PI and being swept into a murder investigation.
This was a fast paced read and I consumed it quickly. I loved getting hunches about the plot and following it through to find if I’m right. I was the invisible 3rd PI!
Throughly enjoyed and hope this first of many more crime investigations to come.
I finished this book in just under 2 days. I really enjoyed it and I definitely didn’t see the twist at the end !!! The only reason that I gave it 4 stars is because the hot bit between 2 males, I’m not really into that but I did enjoy the book
A lovely read that was thoroughly enjoyed on holiday - a good bunch of interesting characters with a mix of romance and crime. Would recommend checking it out!
I was lucky enough to be sent a copy out of this book prior to release from the author and I loved every minute of it!
I felt as though the bond between the main characters was really touching and their issues were incredible relatable. I loved watching their dynamic grow and I think the balance between crime thriller & romance was really well done. I didn’t think either topic overpowered the other.
This was honestly one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. My only real criticism is I think it was slightly short and I would have liked it to be a little bit longer - but I LOVED what was written and I can’t wait to come back for more!! I think this book is an incredible example of what an introduction to crime thriller can look like and will help people who are new to either romance or thriller to ease into the genre.

This is such an incredible read!!!! You feel as though you are part of the story all the way through! I cannot wait for others to be able to read the story and fall in love with it as much as I did ❤️❤️❤️❤️ cannot wait to find out more about the next book!!!
I absolutely loved this book, and I can't recommend it enough. I thought the plot was brilliant, well crafted, with a thought-out plot, articulate story, and Gathercole has absolutely nailed the intrigue element. A woman found dead leads to a private investigation with twists and turns galore.
I loved the gentle romance building and sensitively written love interest between Scott & Gareth. This, running alongside the suspense elements, was a great accompaniment. The chilling web of secrets will send you spinning off in multiple directions but in the most satisfying ways, so you're trying to work out what's happening along with Scott & Gareth.
I also have personal love for mentions of York, Manchester, and Wales, and that Gareth is Welsh. Absolutely brilliant, well done. 👏
The People We Trust is a wonderful and comforting story; I highly recommend it! It combines romance and crime in such an enjoyable way that it's hard to put down.
The main characters are absolutely delightful, and you find yourself caring about them immediately. I love how well they fit together and how interesting a couple they make. While I enjoyed their growing relationship the most, the crime mystery was also well executed. I didn't see who did it until the very end!
It would be amazing if this could become a series. I would love to immerse myself in Gareth and Scott's lives again and follow them on future adventures!
What an incredible and inspirational story and very talented author!!! Extremely unique story and characters. Everyone needs to read this incredible book now!. Enjoy!
