Fall in love with a merman whose love is as freeing as the sea.
1821
Though she's lived at a lighthouse on an isolated shore for her entire life, Daria has never believed in sea monsters—that is, of course, until she comes face to face with one just moments before being knocked unconscious and tossed in the sea.
But to her surprise, she doesn’t drown but instead wakes up on a nearby shore. And when she sees her mystery creature again, she realizes he’s no monster, but a mermaid, with hair like the moon, eyes like rubies…and teeth just like a shark’s.
But despite his appearance, he’s as kind as they come, and as he hangs around and slowly learns her language, she starts to fall for him. Unlike her other suitors, he has no expectations of what a ‘proper’ woman should be or how she should behave. He likes her just for her—tangled hair, men’s pants, and all.
But can a human and a mermaid really form a relationship? And when two suitors keep showing up unannounced, is it even safe for her mermaid to linger?
Such a cute love story. I loved the language barrier at first and how they basically had to play charades to communicate. It was so cute. Them finding comfort and love within each other was sweet. I definitely enjoyed this read. I would love to learn more about Kallias before he meets Daria. Go more into the stories he tells her. I feel this book represents a lot of little girls dreams with meeting and falling in love with a merman lol. Definitely mine included 😋 Overall just a super cute read!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed how there was a language barrier between the two species. There are many fantasy books where everyone miraculously knows the same language, so I think it was good to address that.
With that being said, I felt the first 200 pages moved at an odd pace. I do think it is important for the two characters to go over that language barrier but the conversations never really go in depth about who they are. We know snippets of their family history and why they feel lonely, but I think I never got the sense of their personality and identity. Daria wants more than to be a lighthouse keeper, but we don’t really know what her interests are or what she wants to do. Therefore, when they got together, it just felt fast. Daria didn’t really try to learn Kallias’ language. They didn’t even know each others’ ages.
I also think it’s not until 200 pages where we truly get the real conflict. Yes, it’s stressed numerous times that if mermaids were discovered they could be in trouble, but I think there should have been more to indicate that. For example, Daria talking about the scientist or maybe going more in depth about the villagers. Or even just introduce Runington earlier in the book. His reasons for going after Daria were very rushed. It would have made more sense to talk about the pressure of men running businesses and how Runington’s family was among them. It could have emphasized the point why Daria and Kallias had to hide their relationship.
I did like Daria and Mr.Wilson’s friendship growth in the story. In my opinion, it felt like that relationship was more fleshed out than the romance between Daria and Kallias. Especially at the end. But, it goes back to not really knowing a lot about the main characters. I don’t think I even know his first name? I know it’s improper as addressed in the book, but surely I should know since he’s an important secondary character.
Overall, there were elements I did enjoy from this book. It was fast paced and I was able to finish it quickly. I just think the pacing of the story and the development of the characters ultimately fell flat for me, making it hard to follow the romance.
Arc Review: I was super excited to have the opportunity to be an ARC reader for The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid. This story is very sweet and cozy. The historical setting is perfect for the conflicts within and the allowance for the magic of mermaids. The book is a bit fast paced but makes for a great beach read. Its low stress plot is welcoming to all seeking more comfort than hurt in their escapes from reality.
Enjoy reading sweet paranormal romances like this with strong, capable female protagonist and kind, male protagonist. Very nice book to bring along to read at the beach.
Sara says that ARC readers told her this book had them “giggling and kicking their feet”, and after finishing it, I can confirm that’s 100% true.
The story takes place in the 19th century and focuses almost entirely on the relationship between Daria, a lonely lighthouse keeper, and Kallias, a male mermaid with a tragic past. They can’t help it and even though they belong to different species, they feel an instant connection. Their first attempts at communicating are incredibly sweet, and their romance is tender and innocent.
Since most of the plot revolves around the two of them, we don’t get much about Kallias’s backstory, the underwater threats, or the side characters. I would have liked to know more about Kallias’s life and the other merfolk, and I also missed a bit more development of the villain’s character in order to better understand his actions.
Even so, it’s a light and heartwarming read, with short chapters that keep you turning the pages and a main couple that is simply impossible not to adore.

An unexpected and heartwarming romance between two souls from very different worlds — Daria, the lonely lighthouse keeper, and Kallias, a mermaid who saves her life. 🧜♀️⚓ Their love is sweet, forbidden, and deeply emotional, filled with moments where no one else could ever understand — but somehow, they just do.
This story gently explores the magic of connection, the bravery of love that defies logic, and the healing that can come from the most unlikely places. While there’s no spice, the emotional depth and soft affection make up for it. It’s a tender, creature-crossing romance with a cute HEA that leaves you smiling.
Definitely recommend if you’re in the mood for a slow, sweet, fantasy romance with all the feels.
First of all thank you so much to the author, Sara, for sharing this wonderful piece of writing! I've honestly never done a book review before so I'm just going to talk about the things I liked from this short and sweet story~
I drank the words like alphabet soup! I appreciated the short chapters which made it all the more easier to read, and how the more thrilling chapters had an added dash of suspense because of it. I love the way the author described the environments, painting certain scenes to the point I could almost imagine myself in the characters' shoes, whether its hauling bodies into your boat during a storm or running frantically for fear of losing the love of your life. I loved reading the dialogue between Daria and all the other characters. Not just Kallias and Mr. Wilson, but the other townsfolk, the sailors she rescued, Mr. Runington and even the doctor towards the end. It's just the way each character banters with one another that gives off a sense they're real people with personalities and motivations.
When I first heard the plot of the book, I was excited and looking forward to the 'clash of worlds' and curious how the romance was going to build from it all. I enjoyed the budding friendship turned romance between the duo and think they're absolutely adorable together! However, I do think the speed at which they learned to communicate with each other to be rushed. It was a little jarring to have Daria start off with charades and simple words to Kallias speaking so eloquently by the end of the book, even if there was an understandable time-skip in between. I loved the parts where they were learning about each other, coming to terms with their differences and what that meant for them down-the-line. The intimacy of being seen, known and loved for who you are, not what others want you to be, is expressed within their growing affection for each other.
At first I was a bit put-off by how quickly the two fell in love but after giving it some thought, it made so much sense. These were two incredibly lonely souls who found freedom in each other's arms. Taking into context their upbringing and experiences, in a way, it also speaks to both characters' innocence and naivete because they had never experienced such a love before so why wouldn't they rush into it headfirst? Especially when it's exciting, comforting and liberating all at once; like giddy highschool sweethearts. After looking at it this way, I felt even more protective of them and their love especially when shit started going down towards the later chapters.
Overall I enjoyed this cozy lil read and I look forward to seeing what else is in store for everyone in future books. PS. My favorite supporting character is Mr. Wilson!
📝 Brief Summary Daria lives by herself in a lighthouse and doesn’t believe in stories about sea monsters. But one stormy day, while trying to help some people in the ocean, she sees a strange creature and falls into the water. She later wakes up safe on a beach, rescued by a mermaid with shiny silver hair, red eyes, and sharp teeth. As they get to know each other, Daria becomes close to the kind and mysterious mermaid, who likes her just the way she is. But when two men try to make Daria fall for them, they cause problems that could ruin her new friendship and put the mermaid in danger.
✍️ Writing Style Sara Bittner writes in a clear and detailed way that helps you picture everything in the story. She uses rich descriptions to bring the seaside world and the magical mermaid to life. The story mixes romance and mystery, which keeps it interesting from start to finish.

He’s the type of person who would quickly jump in to help you and keep you safe.

Arc Review: The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid by Sara Bittner Thank you for the ARC The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid is a tender, imaginative story set in the 1800s, exploring themes of loneliness, longing, connection, and transcendental love. It follows the life of a solitary lighthouse keeper whose quiet existence changes when she (Yes, it is a female keeper) encounters a mermaid (merman) after a daring rescue. Through their interactions, we see a bond that grows from shared longing into a deep, old-fashioned love that is much more based on emotional intimacy rather than physical desire.
One of the strengths of the novel is its pacing. The short chapters encourage continuous reading and maintain a rhythm that keeps the reader engaged. The storytelling is compelling, with a tone that feels appropriately lighthearted for the nature of the narrative. The emotional core of the story and the easy, accessible writing style makes the novel a good read from start to finish.
However, there are areas where the novel could have used more detailing. The depiction of the lighthouse keeper sometimes feels anachronistic, her attitudes and independence that is very much inspiring, doest not convincingly align with the societal norms of the 1800s, in which the story is set. Additionally, while the love story is touching, the mermaid's background could have been developed with greater depth. Introducing interactions among the mermaid community might have added richness to the world-building. As the author mentions in her note at the last that there are more adventures planned with our keeper Daria and Kallias the merman in the next book, hence, it can be overlooked. The plot twists, though present, are somewhat predictable yet they keep the story moving. The villain's character could have been more fleshed out to give his actions a strong background.
Overall, The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid succeeds as a sweet, heartfelt story with compelling storytelling and an inviting tone. Though it leaves some opportunities for deeper character and world development, it remains a charming and easy read. I would rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Tropes- 1. Forbidden love 2. Found Family 3. Historical fiction 4. Soul mates
I had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this story! Other reviews have provided excellent summaries of this story, so I'll let you browse through those - instead, I'm going to focus on what was really appealing about this short book.
The love story is perfect for an afternoon read; because the book is short, the romance wastes no time and you get to enjoy all of the cuteness and feels. The characters are searching for companionship, and it warms your heart to watch them find this within each other. The chapters are also bite-sized, which I really enjoyed. I live a fairy busy life, so it's hard for me to dive into books with hefty chapters. With this book, I found that I could get through ten chapters easily and not feel overwhelmed - although I was then tempted to read ten more, ha!
This is a romance, but not smut or a spicy book. There are implied scenes and beautiful descriptions but nothing is explicit. This makes it a great book to take around places - while waiting for an appointment, during a lunch break at work, etc. etc. You'll never worry about someone catching you reading something inappropriate in public - which I know can be of concern to some individuals. Or maybe that's just me..? I'm definitely not speaking from experience...
There are also so many details that were really lovely to read. I don't want to spoil things, but I love the time that was taken to describe the environment and the loneliness of the lighthouse. Daria does not fit into this time period because of the responsibilities she inherited - and you can feel that burden on her shoulders as you read. The descriptions of the ocean and Daria's experiences on the water are really immersive and darkly beautiful - and then when she meets Kallias, she has to figure out how to communicate with him! That was a detail I really loved.
I could write more, but if you're looking to add a short romance to your collection, this book is a lovely one to include. You get romance, drama, soft moments, and danger without feeling overwhelmed! Check it out!
If you are looking for a sweet, heartwarming romance between two misfits who find each other despite being from two different worlds, look no further! Oh, and did I mention one of them is a mermaid and one of them is a human? 👀
Oftentimes, the "I'm not like other girls" trope can be tiring or overused. However, in this case, Daria isn't different just for the sake of being different. Yes, her being different still influences the plot, but the reasons she is the way she is are explained in a very realistic way that makes total sense with her upbringing and lack of knowledge of the customs of the wider world. It makes her feel more grounded and deepens her character in a way that readers will fall in love with her, just like Kallias does.
Speaking of Kallias...I adore this sweet, sensitive, protective mermaid so much! He just wants to help those around him, even at the detriment to his own safety. And it once again makes perfect sense with his background. Hearing him open up about his past was heartbreaking, but those experiences are reflected in everything he does in the present. I, like Daria, found myself wanting to give him the biggest hug over and over throughout the story.
My only issue was that for much of the book not a lot happens beyond Daria and Kallias getting to know each other and falling in love. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but we are teased with stories of other mermaids and the dangers of other sea life, however none of this came into play (at least in this book. I know it was mentioned there will be more of their stories). And because so much time is given to them in their day-to-day budding romance, the end action, motivations, and relationship with other characters feel a bit rushed.
Overall, it was a lovely read with two very enjoyable main characters and a love story that will warm your heart. Would recommend, and I look forward to their adventures in the future!
I was honored to be an ARC reader for this book. What a wonderful way to be introduced to this author's work!
What I Loved I ran to the ARC signups for this book for the setting, and I am thrilled to report the setting delivers. I felt completely immersed in the gorgeous, isolating lighthouse island world. I could picture everything perfectly - the ocean equal parts beautiful and dangerous, the lighthouse both comforting and confining, the rage of storms and the awe of peaceful seas. If you love the coast the way I do, you will not be disappointed.
Daria and Kalias as a couple are unabashedly adorable. Chef's kiss, no notes. Their courtship and affection had me in that kicking-my-feet, giggling, quiet squeeing mood I love. Looking for two lonely hearts of gold who find each other and make each other feel irreplaceable? Look no further. You'll find no cuter couple in the sea.
Daria as our leading lady is a wonderful protagonist. I want to spend all day with her, pouring through her family's collection of tomes, scanning the horizons in the storms, tending to the light. She's grounded, dedicated, and discovering the joys of being seen and loved, and I want nothing but her happiness. And more than once she made me laugh out loud and re-read her lines to my spouse.
...That's It? Look, the rest of this review would just be me straight-up reenacting all my favorite scenes of Daria being witty and Kalias being sweet. But to be honest, that's why I rated it so highly. This is a romance novel that knows exactly what relationship story it's focused on, and it delivers on that message strongly. And on a technical level, the writing is solid. There wasn't a single time where I thought, "I wish an editor had suggested this," or, "I wonder how it would read if this had been changed."
So, yes! Five stars because it's a romance novel that knows what it's doing with the added benefit of probably my favorite setting of all time.
ARC Review (Read with caution. Contains mild spoilers): First, thanks to the author for sending me this adorable book! I’m not typically a big romance reader unless it’s a tragedy, but I am very glad I gave this book a chance. The romance was so wholesome and sweet. The author writes very real and adorable characters. I love our MC, Daria. I honestly related a lot to the character and enjoyed her journey of learning to be comfortable with being herself around someone else. Then our mermaid Kallias. I adored him! I was always happy when he appeared on the page. Sweet and interesting character. His journey of facing his trauma was fun to watch. I was cheering the boy on.
Our two main characters' relationship was very sweet. The biscuit scene was definitely my favorite scene. While it did feel rushed at times and maybe a little cheesy at others, I really liked how well they complemented each other. They communicated, and you could tell how much they adored one another.
Mr. Wilson! He definitely became one of my favorite characters. He respected our MC and watched out for her so lovingly. I honestly enjoyed their friendship so much and was glad that was the direction their relationship took. While Mr. Wilson seemed to truly care for her, were he differed from Kallias was that he still tended to get hooked up on gender norms and what was proper. Which was the times, and Mr. Wilson was clearly advanced in his line of thinking for the times, but with Kallias, since he wasn’t raised on the same gender norms or what was proper, he only saw Daria for who she was. Kallias’s worry and love weren’t tied to her being a woman but to her being the person he loved the most. But Mr. Wilson still did his best and came through when it was important.
A lovely story with a very healthy relationship. If you love cozy stories, I would highly recommend this adorable read.
⭐️ Reseña de «The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid» de Sara Bittner ⭐️
Puntuación: 3 ⭐️
Conocí de este libro a través de un hilo en Threads y enseguida quise leerlo. Para mi deleite, fue el libro que necesitaba leer en ese momento.
«The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid» es una historia sencilla.
Ah, to be young and in love….with a merman. I really feel Daria, I do! I too would sometimes love to live away from other humans, just me and the sea 🌊. And of course who could say no to a handsome merman. 🧜♂️
This was a delightful read, mostly low stakes sweet and cozy. Lots of baking biscuits, and tending to the lighthouse all while a budding friendship turned romance evolving. The ending did dial up a notch, having me holding my breath, a little worried for my new mermaid friend.
Loved how the sea was almost its own character, moving through changing moods, a significant player within the story. I loved how Daria gives it the respect it deserves. I also love that 90% of the story takes place at or around the lighthouse and beach. Love a single setting book. For me this not only allows me to get to know the characters better but somehow seems to bring the setting more to life. Which was the case here.
Looking forward to more stories of Daria and Kallias, the two love struck misfits. Hopefully they get to explore the world. Would love to read more about Kallias’s ocean world.
Definitely recommend for anyone that likes sweet monster romance, and even just romance or fantasy as the monster part isn’t to monstery (not sure what I’m trying to say here, lol) but you should give it a read!

Review-
Young, first love surrounded by passionate fire and dreams.
This story, set in the 1800s, is full of unpredictable seas, storms, hardships, action, loss, and love. Being a lover of the sea myself, it captivated me from the very first page. I'm excited to see where Daria and Kallias's story continues in the next books.
A special thank you to the author, Sara Bittner, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and hope to be a part of the next installments🫶
ARC reader here! I would like to thank Sara for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC reader, wishing her all the best of luck with this impressive book!! Romance books aren't the books I would usually seek to read, so the experience was an interesting change.
This book was filled with heartwarming and sweet moments between a human and a mermaid that was slowly learning about the world around him outside of the comfort of the sea. The female lead's strong-willed personality was a very refreshing thing to read, as she never considered the norms of the society she lived in and focused on what mattered to her.
I loved their language barrier; it made their scenes together extra special. It was so touching to see him trying to learn just to communicate with her.
The chapters were bite-sized, which was a very good thing for someone who barely has time to read throughout their busy days and made it easier for us to focus fully on each chapter, so that was a massive bonus!
Overall, this book was such an amazingly written story with a lot of heartwarming elements, interesting characters, with captivating descriptions of the world that it was set in.
If you are someone that enjoys a sweet romance budding between a human and a merman in the 1800s, then Kallias and Daria's story will definitely tug at your heartstrings.
Thank you so much for the ARC copy; I absolutely adored the story!
A beautiful forbidden romance that kept me on the edge of my seat!
I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this book! Every chapter left me wanting to read just one more, eager to find out what happened to Daria and Kallias. From their fateful meeting that stormy night I became deeply invested in their relationship, hoping for a happily ever after for the two outcasts. I think what truly endeared me was all the little things: the charades as they tried to share their worlds with each other, the tender touches, the gifts they gave each other. By the end my heart was leaping and a smile broke my face every time Daria ran into Kallias’ waiting arms.
Aside from the romance I also really enjoyed how the supporting characters (and the antagonist) were written and the descriptions of the town and the lighthouse were done so well I could picture each scene clearly, making it such a delight to read!
I’m also extremely excited to hear that there are more adventures ahead for the lovely pair and I can’t wait to see where they go next! If you want a cozy romance with a dash of drama and danger then this is the story for you!
Firstly, huge thanks to the author, Sara, for sending this ARC over.
I really love stories where I feel the absolute need to root for the main characters and their happy endings, and that usually comes from the depth of conflict(s) that they experience throughout the book. This book, despite its potential, falls just a little short of that by my personal preference. Every time it feels like it could just go a little further, hurt a little more, it stops there and everything becomes magically okay. Not to say that that’s a bad thing or the story becomes unenjoyable, because overall it is a wholesome and endearing love story, and it’s the kind of healing story thats good for the soul after reading a slew of tragic love stories with no happy endings.
Some of the things that I really did enjoy from the book was the slow burn romance, though the jump from shy flirting to full blown falling in love was a little abrupt, but it doesn’t seem out of place for the 1800s; as well as the friendship between Daria and Mr Wilson. The short chapters also make it for an easy read.
Overall, it’s a cute book and I look forward to reading the next books in this series to find out what happens to Daria and Kallias.
A beautiful forbidden romance that kept me on the edge of my seat!

✨I was provided with an ARC of this book in exchange for a review but that in no way influenced my opinions✨ I loved this short and sweet mermaid read! The relationship between Daria and Kalias is so wonderful and pure. The author does a really great job with establishing the time period and I really loved the consideration of the very real danger of scientific progress at this time ie. mermaid alive dissection. I thought Mr. Wilson was a great side character and I love how he progressed in the book (no spoilers lol). The antagonist was so fun to hate! My one complaint with this book would be that it did feel just a touch lovey Dovey for me almost as soon as Daria and Kalias established their romantic connection and I wish there would have been just a little bit more of them as a romantic couple having problems and disagreements The other point I wanted to make was that I think there are too many chapters in this book. There’s a chapter break every 2-3 pages and it got annoying to read after a while. Overall I would definitely pick this one up, it’s a nice easy read with a really sweet romance!
A beautifully story. The Lighthousekeeper and the Mermaid reads like a modern fairy tale, filled with longing, isolation, and fleeting magic. Sara Bittner’s writing is lyrical and haunting — she captures the mood of the sea and the soul of her characters with delicate precision.
This isn’t just a story about a mermaid; it’s about what it means to be seen, to connect, and to carry the ache of impermanence. It stayed with me long after I finished. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy poetic storytelling and quiet, magical realism with emotional depth.
I really enjoyed The Lighthousekeeper and the Mermaid by Sara Bittner — it’s one of those quiet, poetic stories that sneaks up on you and lingers. The writing is absolutely beautiful, with vivid descriptions that made me feel like I was right there by the sea, watching everything unfold.
The story is short but emotionally deep. It’s more about mood and feeling than plot, which I loved. The relationship between the lighthouse keeper and the mermaid is tender, mysterious, and a little heartbreaking. If you’re into bittersweet, magical realism and reflective, fairy tale-like stories, this is definitely worth a read.
This is my first time getting to be an ARC reader and I’m so excited I was able to meet these characters early!
I have always loved the ocean, the coast, a good storm and this book starts off strong making you feel like you are in the storm with them!
As you get to know the characters who may be in the 1800s and isolated in different ways it’s hard not to see how some things are still so similar.
Sure we have advanced technology but we also still have power hungry men who think they can take claim on a woman just because. (Spoiler alert, we fight back)
The love between Daria and Kallias is so pure and genuine! I described their first meeting as that feeling when you’ve been without adult human interaction all day and the other adult comes home and you open your mouth and your whole life story comes out! And it’s like oh I didn’t know I needed this!
This is a story about two strong independent beings who have been just fine on their own but once they meet each other realize that just fine will never be enough again!!
Sara Bittner's The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid is a classic tale of the Little Mermaid. The catch? It's a reverse telling of the tale, where the prince is a female lighthouse keeper, and the Mermaid is male. The time period, being the 1800's, it is unheard of for a woman to be a lighthouse keeper alone, but the townsfolk made an exception for her because she grew up at the lighthouse and no one else wanted the job. When she encounters the Mermaid, she quickly realizes how alike they are regardless of their differences and a romance blossoms.
Ms. Bittner uses a writing style that takes readers back to the late 1800s, easily making them feel as if they are part of the story. The way she describes everything, she draws her readers close, and they instantly become entwined in the lives of the characters.
Being as The Lighthouse Keeper and the Mermaid is book one in her new Lighthouse series, waiting for book two is going to be a test of restraint in not heckling the author.
Daria has literally set herself apart by becoming the lighthouse keeper when her father passes away. Figuratively, she is isolated when she makes it clear that she has no interest in marriage, a suspicious attitude in the early 1800s.
Daria's solitary life is upended when she tries to save the crew of a wrecked ship but she herself is rescued by a creature she's never seen before and did not believe in --- a merman.
Daria and Kallias's growing romance is threatened by ignorant villagers and an overbearing company man who threatens to force Daria into marriage or ruin her reputation.
The story is sweet and develops at a leisurely pace. The threat to the two's romance is slow to come, even though Daria worries about what might happen if people discover Kallias's existence. The ending is not exactly a cliffhanger, but definitely leaves a reader waiting for a sequel to wrap up some loose ends.
Daria strength and independence is my favorite part of the book. She is brave and intelligent, a main character worth rooting for.
I enjoyed this cozy fantasy story that presents a gender-swapped Little Mermaid.
An enchanting story about two people who fell in love, however there’s one catch, it’s only one human and another a merman! This story was heartwarming in its simplicity and emotions brought forth. The love story between the two main characters was heartwarming warming and precious, because they overcame everything: language barriers, opposite species, and societal expectations, to be together. The book started a big slow, but as soon as you got a quarter in in dived a bit deeper into the plot and towards the end I was at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. This book is Young Adult, so it’s suitable for all audiences and was a quick read. While it is advertised as historical fiction and fantasy/romantasy I would lean it more towards the romantasy side, as there were not many historical aspects, which however made it uniquely enjoyable for me. Would definitely recommend!!
I have too many words for this book. I’ll start by saying, wow, glad we don’t live back in the 1800’s. It did start off a little slow, but I appreciated it because it really painted a picture and gave you a full scope of Daria’s life. Mr. Wilson was by far my favorite character in this story. I hope that he gets better, builds them a boat, with a tank of some sorts for Kallias. 😅😅 This is a slow burn fantasy romance, so there’s no spice (I’m assuming since the time period is in the 1800’s and everyone is modest.) I do appreciate that she kept the sentiment of modesty, whilst writing a story based in the 1800’s where women were fully clothed to swim. I like how see put us in the mind of a person during that time period, with their sexist and misogynistic views about women and others whom don’t “look like them”. All in all it’s a very cute and sweet read, that has a couple twists that’ll have you feeling happy, sad, worried and utterly P*SSED off!

Thank you Sara Bittner, the kind author for gifting me this Arc copy. It was truly a gem of a read.
I am soft for romance and particularly those written in historical settings.
Set in the 1800s, a lighthouse keeper meets a mermaid and their lives entangled as they fall in love and battle language barriers.
Their unique aspect? She's the lighthouse keeper and he is the merman.
I absolutely loved this take on a female lighthouse keeper as opposed to her being the mermaid. This refreshing take is what had inspired me to sign up for the ARC.
A soft, lighthearted romance that remains cute and awwhhh-inspiring. I definitely let out a few awwwhs while reading. I loved the short chapters, it felt easier to get through
I am trying not to give too much away, but definitely read this. It is cute and sweet and a smooth read.
**thank you once more to the author for allowing me to review her book. Thank you.
Daria and Kallias were too cute! I loved how, despite his fear of the unknown, Kallias was drawn to Daria, saving her life in a storm. Daria was resilient and hellbent on her solitary life, completely besotted with her mermaid over any human company. Kallias, also a loner, comes to rely on Daria for more than companionship as the two fall in love. Despite the language barrier, they became each other's lighthouse. I loved watching the bond form between them. Even with options for life off the island and human company, Daria chooses Kallias every time. He's a total cinnamon roll for his human, adorable and sweet, but ready to protect her by any means necessary. I hate that their relationship was tested by force, but I loved seeing them come out stronger together. This is a very sweet, not spicy, love story that I found myself enamored with. Daria and Kallias are twin souls that I would love to see more of in the future.
Super sweet and super romantic. It gives me old school fairytale vibes where we fall in love with the fantastical as we escape reality. Anyone who’s ever been lonely can relate to the way these two souls with nothing in common come together. Starting off super sweet and cozy, the last bit of chaos picks up and reminds me of Sara’s personal preference for ✨Drama✨ totally had me clenching my cheeks in a way that flowed naturally and kept me engaged throughout. If you are sensitive to things like threats of rape, male aggression and violence, it’s relevant to the plot and not graphic in anyway, but does show up 3/4 of the book.
It’s not a closed door romance, but it’s very tasteful without explicit sex. I would say how a movie would show, like the sex scene in the Titanic. Very tasteful, beautiful and beyond romantic.
I loved these two, insta love but again, very reminiscent of a fairy tale, which I adore.
