With the highest percentage of LGBTQIA+ residents in Vermont, Maplewood is a town where everyone belongs. And with festivals year round, there’s always something fun happening! This multi-author, low-angst queer series features ten standalone romances—each set against the backdrop of a different festival. Come for the celebrations, stay for the happily-ever-afters!
Chantal Mer never set out to write books. Yet here she is, and she’s having a blast. Happily ever afters for everyone make her heart sing. She also has the privilege of co-writing with her friend Susan Scott Shelley, and their low-angst stories have plenty of heat, a few laughs, and lots of love.
When she’s not writing, Chantal can be found walking her adorable dog, going to musical theater with her daughter, observing the night sky with her husband and his telescope, and learning about the latest advances in video games with her son. Give her a book and a glass of wine and she’s in her happy place. Chantal lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband, two teens, and her sweet pup, Miss Toffee.
Bee-tween the Music is the fourth book in the multi author series, Love in Maplewood. This book is by Chantal Mer and I am so in love with it. I’ve said from the start that I love this little town and all the things “maple!” But this one, with the honey/maple products and the sweet love between these two characters, my heart couldn’t be happier.
Dmitri Fairchild is thirty nine years old. He’s a violinist and has spent his life training and playing in orchestras. He has spent the last ten years playing in the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra but after a set of circumstances, he walked away. Ten months later, he finds himself in Maplewood, Vermont while doing some recording with a quartet. He has no idea where he wants his life to go now. He’s lost his love of music.
Ever King came back to Maplewood ten years ago to take over his grandfather’s honey shop. Ever is forty one years old. He also loves to play the cello. Between his bee hives, the shop and the festivals, he keeps very busy and he loves his life.
It was chance that brought these two together, or maybe it was fate? The attraction was instant. That spark that only true chemistry can create. But maybe it was the day that Dmitri saw Ever playing his cello for his bees that he truly fell for him.
Dmitri’s life is at a crossroads. And Ever’s life will always be in Maplewood. Ever is determined to just enjoy this time together for what it is. He doesn’t want to influence Dmitri in any way as to what his future should look like. But in his most beautiful dreams, he would stay.
“The sweet rumble of his laughter has somehow become my favorite song. One I want to hear on repeat over and over again.”
What a sweet, swoony, beautiful story. The mixture of the music, the beautiful little town, all the things maple and honey, these wonderful two men, I fell in love with it all. I adore this series and with each book, I think I have a new favorite. The next book is by another author that I enjoy, Bix Barrow, called Can You Feel the Maple Tonight. I’m so excited to read it.
This was so cute! If you want to read about two musicians falling in love in a small town, this is for you ✨🌻
After being betrayed by his boyfriend, Dmitri leaves his job at the Philadelphia Symphony and spends one year trying to decide his next step. He ends up staying in Maplewood to record a video with some of his musician friends.
What he wasn’t expecting was falling in love with Maplewood and its people. Especially, with a certain someone who plays to make his bees happy.
I LOVED the small town rep. The sense of community and the interactions between the villagers and the main couple was my favorite aspect of the book. I also liked both Dmitri and Ever, they were wholesome and really deserved each other, but I found the romance too fast for my taste. I prefer slow burn and a bit more of angst. I’m not against characters feeling attracted from the beginning, or even feeling like that person is going to be important for them, but I like the pace to be slower. The feelings were too fast for me to fall in love and ship them the way I wanted before they got physical.
Overall, I recommend this one if you like small town romances done well, musicians in love and spicy romances with no angst. The romance was a bit fast and spicy for me because I love slow burn, but I enjoyed everything else.
I kindly received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I honestly adore this series! Ever and Dmitri are just the next couple in a fairytale-like town called Maplewood. I swear fluff is good for the soul!
Very low angst; the story is about Dmitri, who gets betrayed by his boyfriend in front of a huge audience and leaves the orchestra to get away from him. Ever, who runs a honey business and plays the cello in his spare time, meets Dmitri, and they hit it off. They play together and learn to be each other’s happiness.
There’s nothing overly deep, nothing too dramatic, no homophobia or cruelty anywhere. It’s just good old-fashioned love. Meeting someone new and taking a chance on them.
Love it. ————- I received an ARC of this from GRR, and this is my honest review.
This is my first book by this author, and looking at the list of writers in this multi-author series, there will be a lot of New To Me authors. That's exciting!
I thought this slow burn book about a beekeeper and a musician was pretty good. The dialog was real, the side characters interesting but not intrusive, and the steam was also very sexy. My only real gripes is that because this series in set in Maplewood, VT, I'm a bit tired of all the maple flavored foods that get mentioned. This book ups the ante with this by name dropping a lot of different classical compositions, and because one character is a beekeeper, we get a lot of bee related stuff.
Still, the romance was sweet and I loved seeing a POC that wasn't stereotyped at all. Might check out this author's other books some time.
I can’t believe how beautiful this was. I swear I heard the music as I read. And the buzzing of bees. I even heard the rustling in the woods. That’s how well this was written. The more I read the deeper I was into their lives and the scenery surrounded me in sounds and visuals. I was so invested in Ever and Dimitri finding their HEA. I love Maplewood. I’m so glad I requested an arc from GRR. I can’t get enough of this series.
From just dropping in to spend a week recording to finding a place that feels like home, Dimitri finds himself pulled to Maplewood by the kind people, the warm feelings and the sexy beekeeper. Ever is wary of the tourist but can’t deny his feelings. Sweet guys who make a go of it even though they are both unsure as they navigate their way through their feelings.
After a terrible break up and leaving his career with an orchestra, Dmitri is figuring out what next. The break up may have been a blessing in disguise because his career was starting to take a toll on him. Losing his love of music isn’t something he ever wanted, but how could he not be tired by the pressure of it? Now, Dmitri finds himself in Maplewood and what started as staying just for a week to record an album with his friends, he finds himself staying longer and longer. And that is mostly thanks to Ever. The connection between Ever and Dmitri is instant. And though both have their own past bad relationships, they find themselves breaking their own rules for one another. Ever’s biggest fear now is the day Dmitri tells him he is leaving. Because how can he not when he has so many opportunities left for him? But Maplewood keeps surprising Dmitri in more ways than one. While he is falling hard and fast for Ever, he is also finding his love of music again. I adored Dmitri and Ever! They were this adorable insta-love couple who deserve all the love in the world. They deserve their happy ending. I loved getting to know these characters in this fun place! Another great book in this series!

4.5 stars raised to 5 This is the third of the first four books I have read in the Maplewood series, and I have enjoyed them all, so far. I love the monthly festival theme, and this time it is bees and honey, with Ever being the originating and driving force behind the Honey Bee Jubilee. He returned to Maplewood ten years ago and got into beekeeping, and now is making honey products and selling all things bee oriented. He also plays the cello, and serenades his bees several times a week, weather permitting. Dimitri comes to Maplewood to work on a classical album with his quartet, still reeling from a betrayal a year ago, not sure where he will go after the album is completed and released, or what he will do next, having quit his place in the Philadelphia Orchestra. In his time here, he meets and has an instant attraction to Ever (which is mutual). He gets drawn into serenading the bees on his violin with Ever, then giving lessons to kids, and is quickly becoming recognized and welcomed into Maplewood, fitting into the small town life and finding a peace and feeling of home with Ever, something he has never had before. When an opportunity opens up in town, and another one overseas, he must evaluate his past choices, where he is now, and what he wants for the rest of his life. Could he find happiness and satisfaction with Ever in Maplewood, or will he find that elsewhere on a different path? Care to make a guess, it is a romance, after all. Previous characters in earlier books make cameo appearances, new characters are introduced, and Dimitri and Ever are the stars this time. All characters are very realistic and believable, and quickly work their way into the fabric of the lives of newcomers to this charming little town. Gossip is a town staple, and newcomers quickly find their lives the talk of the town. Few secrets here, and the blossoming relationship between Ever and Dimitri is known by all before the day is over. Townspeople are very welcoming, making it a hard place to leave, the kind of place I would like to live. All of the books I have read in the series so far have been engaging, holding my interest and drawing me into the lives of the town. I plan to read all of the books, and am looking forward to the next one to come out. I would recommend the series if you like friendly small towns, welcoming townsfolk, themed monthly festivals, and couples who find their forever person and a sense of home in a town called Maplewood. I received an advance copy and this is my voluntary review.
In this, the 4th entry in the Love in Maplewood series, Chantal Mer captures the feeling of being embarrassed by your boss during the final performance of the season for the orchestra in which he performs. Dmitri Fairchild is stunned and saddened by the embarrassment, but he's uplifted by his friends and fellow musicians who come together to record a piece. Naturally, Dmitri ends up in Maplewood, staying at the town's renowned inn.
During one of his walks, he encounters beekeeper Ever King, who plays his cello for his bees and invites Dmitri to join him. Ever also has a strict rule of not dating tourists, so while he appreciates the handsome Dmitri, he initially keeps his distance—until he can no longer do so.
There is instant attraction, and Dmitri thrives in immersing himself in Maplewood's culture—the competitive diners, the music scene—and he even connects with the parent of a young man who has lost interest in his music, helping him rediscover its magic. Dmitri is then invited to give lessons to him and other young people.
Now, Dmitri has a chance to impress his unkind former boss by being invited to join the top tier of the London Orchestra. However, he's also fallen in love with Ever and with Maplewood, which has inspired him to start a youth orchestra.
Both men fear that their time together is about to end, believing the call of London or another big opportunity will pull Dmitri away from Maplewood. Yet, even cryptid Mabel shows an interest in their story, and magic finds a way.
This is a quick, enjoyable read filled with many delightful moments with Maplewood and its people. The story features a rich cast of characters, including some family members, who make this love story even more special.
I just keep loving this weird and wonderful town of Maplewood! We have moved fully into springtime in this quirky town, with a festival all about bees!
Dmitri is trying to figure out what to do with his life now that he quit his job in the Philadelphia orchestra after a (very very) terrible breakup. He's charmed by the town he's staying in to record a chamber music album, and even more charmed by Ever, the honey maker and resident bee enthusiast he meets.
Ever and Dmitri were honestly just very cute together. I loved watching both of them try and fail to not develop feelings for each other. Dmitri's journey to figuring out what comes next was also very interesting, as he tries to figure out what would actually make him happy vs. what seems like the best choice. It's a relatable feeling that I'm guessing a lot of adults identify with.
As a certified music nerd, I also loved all the music references in this book as well. String instruments are so beautiful (even if I can't play them), and I loved that these two shared a love of music together.
If you're looking for a cheerful story, this book (and really this whole series so far) is perfect for you!
CW: mentions of past infidelity (not between or by MCs), sexual content
Ever & Dmitri Love rooted in music and the vibrations of bees. This was such an incredibly sweet story. Obviously, Dmitri's story starts off a bit rough, but Ever is so good for him that he sloughs off much of his earlier negativity pretty quickly. The two men form an instant bond over their love of music, and Dmitri gets an opportunity to re-discover said love in a way he hadn't realized he needed. There were so many sweet and simple scenes in this story that it's hard to choose a favorite! I already knew I'd love the book because the MC is a violinist, and I'm glad I was right. 😊 I wish I were a little more familiar with some of the pieces that were played/referenced, but I can imagine the peace and beauty of the moments.
Bee-tween the Music was a beautiful addition to the multi-author Love in Maplewood series. While we didn't interact with a great many of the other townspeople that may or may not be in the other stories, this book fit in very well with the overall theme of love in a small town. I've loved each and every one of the books in this series so far, and I'm excited to keep going.
I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
Bee-tween the Music is a beautiful story in the Love in Maplewood multi-author series and is the first story I’ve read by this author. I haven’t read the other books in this series, but assuming they are of this quality, they will go on my TBR. It features strong, supportive secondary characters who effectively propel the story forward. I enjoyed seeing characters this age having a new, deep relationship beyond a brief bang and despite pesky middle-age aches and pains. Dmitri and Ever are lovely men. There is enough backstory to understand the characters better, but not so much that it takes over the piece. The quickness of their relationship worked for me in this case. It ticked all the boxes and felt like more than a hookup right from the start. They meshed well together right away, and I wasn’t concerned that it wouldn’t work out. I knew it would and enjoyed their journey to the HEA. There are plenty of spicy times, and an emotional connection I could feel. I look forward to more from this author.
Dmitri, a classical violinist, fresh of a personal -- yet public -- betrayal and break up is finding solace and re-finding himself while working on passion projects and staying in Maplewood. When he comes across charming, passionate, and fellow classical music fan Ever...sparks fly! Except, Ever doesn't date tourists. Will they be able to hit the right notes for a happily ever after?!
This book was honey sweet. Dmitri and Ever were MCs in their 40s (always a nice change of pace) with their own baggage, but when they meet their connection is all the buzz! A very gentle read, low angst, with a wee dash of classical music education.
Bee-tween the Music is book 4 in the Love in Maplewood series, a multi author interconnected series set in the most LGBTQIA+ friendly (and stacked with) town in Vermont. While cameos and crossovers occur, they may be read in any order.
*Read an ARC from GRR. Thoughts and opinions my own*
A beekeeping musician and a professional violinist searching for what’s next is absolutely what small-town romances are meant to be full of.
Longing, soul searching, easy romance, hot nights (and mornings…and afternoons…and showers), with some worry that they can’t keep it forever. But ultimately - home!
Attracted by lust, but bonded by a love of music, these two fall into an easy, albeit temporary romance - but it’s clear by absolutely everyone that it’s meant to be more. And I do mean everyone, because the whole town is completely invested in their comings and goings!
It’s a lovely romance that warms the heart and has a super happy ever after.
I absolutely loved the music aspect of this story. Classical music is just right for Maplewood, and for bees. Ever and Dmitri had both been burned and were wary of hookups, relationships and love but neither had bargained for meeting the other. The instant spark between them was unexpected but not one either of them could ignore. Their romance develpoed at breakneck speed while, at the same time, seemed almost leisurely. I think it was the knowledge of all the hours they spent playing to the bees that made time slow down. I loved how Chantal managed to weave together the music and all things bees into the story, not overpowering the romance but being part of it. Dmitri fell back in love with music in Maplewood and also fell in love with the bees while falling for Ever. I loved this entry into the series and the odds are it's probably going to be my favourite, no matter how good the rest of them are.
Return to the enchanting town of Maplewood, VT. It's been a year since Dmitri Fairchild walked away from performing with the Philadelphia Symphony. At the last concert of the season, his boyfriend walked on stage and proposed to another man. Time to reevaluate his life. Ever returned to Maplewood a decade ago. He is a beekeeper and running a successful business of all thing's bee related, i.e. honey, soaps lotions, and candles. He also like to serenade his bees on his cello. Dmitri is fresh from recording an album with three other musicians and taking a break in Maplewood. The more time spent in the quirky little town the more he likes it. With passions building between Dmitri and Ever will Dmitri take on more students, record more, work with Rio in the studio, and help start a youth symphony, or will the lure of becoming the concertmaster of the London Symphony win out.
This book hit just the right notes. The chemistry between Dmitri and Ever is immediate and compelling, and their shared interests create a natural harmony that feels authentic. The romance builds with tenderness, and offers just the right amount of spice without overpowering the emotional undercurrents of rediscovery and vulnerability. While the plot unfolds at a relatively leisurely pace, the novel makes up for it with engaging dialogue, sweet moments, and a satisfying journey to a HEA.
Readers who enjoy low-drama romances with mature characters and just a touch of whimsy will enjoy this read. If you're looking for a charming, low-angst MM romance with a touch of small-town nosiness and a lot of musical soul, don't skip this book.
[I received an advanced copy of this book. All reviews and ratings are my own.]
3.5 stars. There was lots that I really liked in this story and it was great to be back in Maplewood to meet more of the wonderful characters. From the outside, I really felt for Dmitri and the betrayal he felt. Ever was such a perfect character to help him properly get over it and they had good chemistry together. I enjoyed the music element and thought it was sweet to imagine them playing to the bees! Maplewood itself didn't disappoint and the world building was strong. Overall, a sweet, low-angst mm romance that had a lovely HEA for the pair. I'm looking forward to more in this shared series!
I absolutely loved getting to know Ever and Dmitri in this book... Like the others in the series, it centres around a town festival - this one dedicated to none other than bees...
I love how these two bond over music and how Dmitri adapts to living in a small town. Beyond the romance, it was nice watching him find his place, and also open himself up to listening for his own wants and needs.
This book, like the others, gives us a utopian glimpse at what a small town in Vermont with a heightened percentage of queer people could be and I'm definitely here for it as we watch the current meltdown of society.
With each book, this series gets better and better. With each one I think this is my favorite. Each book makes me want to find my Maplewood, VT where LGBT folks can feel loved, safe, and secure. This one is about a burned our musical, Dimitri, and beekeeper who plays mucis to his bees Ever. It is so well written the music sings and the bees buzz and capture your heart. Despite both men having a bad track record when it comes to relationship they give into their instant attraction and a sweet love story develops. I love how each one has a "relationship rule" that goes out the window due to their attraction. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
bubble bath, chocolate martini, yellow & black striped trash bin, gold star, Run DMC, Pygmy goat, SPAM & Kobe beef
I'm moving to Maplewood. It sounds like an idyllic and serene town. Though quirky, the residents have a sense of community and support each other. It's nice to see an over-thirty couple still finding and having a loving relationship. Dmitri and Ever make a musical and sweet couple. Like the other MCs in the "Love in Maplewood" series, Dmitri and Ever find their HEA. I think it's great to see musicians bond over one of the universal languages - music.
The story itself is delightful and enjoyable. I was deeply invested it this romance. I handily recommend this.
Ever does not date visitors but he heard the right note when Dimitri came to town. They are both musicians, although Dimitri was playing professionally before he left the orchestra. Meeting each other struck the right cord and caused them to want to give in to temptation, so they do. But like that first chip from a bag they go back again and again and that helps them settle into a rhythm that leads to so much more to the benefit of them both. These men are both likeable characters who have had some challenges and now have landed with someone nice to build a life with. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love the way this story wove the musical theme into their love story. I thought this was gonna be a slow burn, but it was really just a pause before the explosion. Once they had each other, the two could not keep their hands off each other.
This was a surprisingly cute story. It’s really written like a rom com. Though it more musically inclined, then bee themed.
I love how we got to see so many of the town’s other citizens. And this story seemed less of a story wrapped up about the two of them, but of the whole town.
Maplewood seems like such a NICE place to live - this is the 4th in the series, and every author has made the nosy, gossipy townfolk really pleasant people - this book is the same.
Dimitri comes to town after quitting the orchestra for personal reasons, falls in love with the town, and with Ever, the beekeeper (who is also a musician). It's Honey Bee Festival time, so there are lots of folks dressed up as bees, and lots of honey. There's a lot of music, a chance for Dimitri to go to London to join the orchestra there, and a really pleasant HEA.
Dimitri is a concert violinist with the Philadelphia Symphony. After his boyfriend proposes to the conductor at the last concert he walked away disillusioned. Ever a beekeeper, cellist and composer lives in Maplewood where Dimitri is staying to record an album in a nearby town. Ever believes he is happy but knows something is missing. This is a sweet love story with two wounded souls trying to find their happiness. The town is full quirky residents and there is an elusive ghost that makes this storyline so fun to read.
This book had my heart hurting from the beginning, Dmitri gets betrayed by the one person he thought was his person so he goes anywhere he can to get away from it all and ends up close to maplewood, where he learns all about the wonderful festival and decides to go explore. Ever and Dmitri meet at the festival and it’s instant attraction that they act on pretty quickly and the chemistry between these two is off the charts. Watching their story unfold was wonderful, and tell the story of how it’s never too late find love. 😁❤️
Dmitri and Ever were endearing together, but past experiences and heartbreak keep them from being fully involved. Their moments together are sweet and intense, and slowly, they become more assured about their feelings and roles in each other’s lives. They found numerous things in common that they enjoy, they rediscover the lost spark and gain more confidence in themselves. It was an engaging experience, and I’m looking forward to the next adventure.
I am enjoying the Love In Maplewood series. I really like how connected it is even though it's a shared world. Ever is the cello playing, bee keeping, shop owner who does not have flings with tourists and Dmitri is the disillusioned violinist staying in town to record an album with his quartet. This was a sweet, steamy story about two guys who, against their better judgment fall in love and find home. 4.5*
4.5 Stars - this book was as sweet as honey (pun intended) Ever and Dimitri are perfection!! Their draw to each other, and their passion for music and bees and life just jumped off the page. So far this has been one of my most favorite couples out of this series, and that’s saying something because they are all great!! I hope we get to see them and catch some glimpse of their life together throughout the rest of the series. I can’t wait to continue on in Maplewood!
This book was really well written with the music bee-ing perfectly interwound with the romance. The Bee theme was cute and playing in the field with them was awesome. This is a very small-town story but Maplewood is a wonderful town. There is just acceptance and love from all who reside there. Once Ever and Dimitri do get together the story explodes of the page. I couldn't put it down. Recommend this series for everyone and the stories can be read as standalones.
