What a tease to end like that! It’s also good to see Ten & Takao, although I wish we get to understand their relationship a bit more. And I love the short interlude with Zashiki.

What an awful place to end a volume!! These come out so slowly, too, that it's going to be forever (~7 months) for the next one.
The majority of this volume is taken up by a fairly traditional case that reminded me of The Summer Hikaru Died . There's a remote village steeped in ancient traditions that include sacrificing "brides" to the god of the mountain, who rewards the villagers with immense wealth. Strangely, after centuries of this exchange, the god sends a request to our beloved supernatural agency, asking for help being released from the mountain and its devoted followers, so the four guys head there to check it out. (Ten and Osuke visiting the hot springs, and Takao and Nijio following along behind out of well-placed worry.)
I admit I don't fully understand still how some of the worldbuilding works...did the god's message just filter through the air and somehow catch someone spiritually sensitive? How exactly did they receive and interpret this request?
The rest of the story is straightforward enough. It turns out the original sacrifice, a beautiful young woman who'd volunteered to be the first offering while the village was going through a drought, was the god's true bride. They only had a decade together before she visited the village again, horrifying the greedy villagers, who'd assumed she'd been eaten. As the god's actual bride, they worried that she'd suck up too much of his attention and love, taking his focus and blessings away from them. So they poisoned her and sent the god new brides every twenty years to keep him appeased.
Ten and Osuke are the latest sacrifices, which is certainly one way of solving a case. It turns out the god, Ujigami, has been sending the sacrifices back to the village this whole time, because while he appreciates (and rewards) the attempts to soothe his heartbreak, he's only ever loved his first bride and doesn't want a replacement. He has no idea that the villagers are poisoning all the "escaped" brides with memory-wiping drugs. He also doesn't know that they were the ones who'd killed his wife.
The story itself is handled well, with love and lifelong partners being the main theme. Ujigami recognizes both Takao/Ten and Nijio/Osuke as devoted couples who care for each other just as much as he and his bride had. Osuke...continues to be fairly oblivious, but is starting to feel even more confusing heart palpitations around Nijio, so he's very very slowly getting there. More importantly, he's taking Ten's advice about what partnerships actually entail: he doesn't need to worry so much about trying to be impressive enough on his own. In fact, Nijio wants to be relied on and needed.
There's a particularly nice exchange where Nijio apologizes for following Osuke - it's not that he didn't trust him, he was just concerned, he says, trying to respect Osuke's desire to be independent and valued for his own strengths. No, Osuke says, he was actually incredibly happy Nijio showed up to save him, when he needed him most. They're making progress.
The next chapter is just a short bridge to bring back some of the side characters, like Zashiki-Warashi. It's cute, although it doesn't add much in the way of a story.
Then we start out with a multi-part case in a love hotel, which is why we wind up with Nijio and Osuke finally, maybe, actually kissing?? But in an attempt to summon a spirit that's been breaking up a bunch of couples who've stayed in this hotel.
It's a great scene; I love how it progresses, and I will wait as patiently as I can for the spirit to most likely interrupt the kiss before it actually turns into anything. But maybe Osuke will get a hint that the things he's feeling for his partner aren't really all that platonic.

Man what a cliffhanger!! I like this series even if it is a slow burn but the supernatural angle is very interesting. I also love the index at the end with more details. This is so good. I can't wait for the next one!!!

This volume only had two cases in it, the first one is Osuke and Ten together. The second is a but more giggly, its Osuke and Nijio going to a love hotel cuz there is a ghost who tries to break people up. I wont go in to details but it end with a cliffhanger and i almost ate the book frfr.
For the first case this volume Ten and Osuke go tho a village and get in trouble, their boys need to safe them. There also was a lot of Ten and Takao in general, which i like but ffs i need Nijio and Osuke to get together like yesterday.
The reason I only gave it 4 stars was because there wasn’t really any progress in Osuke’s and Nijio’s relationship. Yes of course, in every volume they get a little bit closer but in this volume they don’t really get new realisations like in the last volume where they both realised they actually like each other. They also didn’t really progress their powers or anything.
Don’t get me wrong it was a nice read but just nit as much progress up until the last fk page 🫠

omggg ok cliffhanger!! the first chapter was fun, despite how cartoonishly evil the antagonists were. it almost reminded me a bit of a persephone and hades retelling, so that was nice. i dont think that was the intent of the mangaka, but it had a similar plotline to many interpretations of that story and was overall enjoyable to follow (despite how convoluted it ended up being). the side story in the middle was super cute and wholesome, and the final chapter felt like a fanfiction trope (but was very funny to read for that reason!) continuing to enjoy following these characters and their paranormal shenanigans (:
Review of advance copy
The story has gained new plotlines and I love the way it's going about exploring them! We get to see more examples as to what higher beings are capable of and the ways the connections to others work. Our main characters are getting to be more open with each other in a way that helps progress the plot. The side stories on this volume are very sweet.

I think A Village Tradition was the strongest arc so far. I love when a typically lighthearted manga isn't afraid to lean into darker aspects of its genre and this series is doing a great job of building up that sense.

It was okay. The villagers here were pretty cartoonishly evil, and I continue to be more interested in the backstory for the side pairing versus the main guys, but there were only teasing hints of that here. 😅 At least the side story with the Zashiki-warashi was cute.

I don't remember the last time I was this far into a series thinking how much I still enjoy the "villain of the week" formula. Every new story arc is a delight, and I'm still enjoying the side characters without feeling like they're overshadowing the story.
