Half-fae Maya Lyons left Detroit and her brother and his criminal ties behind over a year ago. She’s settled in Dunhare to finally work on that architecture degree she’s always wanted, and where the most dangerous thing is a friendship that’s maybe growing to something more with Specialist Besim Antilles. Until her brother re-appears along with his boss, the most notorious elf drug lord in the Allied States. They know she has ties to Crew Six, and they want vengeance.
Communications Specialist Besim Antilles isn’t sure what’s between him and Maya, but when she calls him to warn the team, he and Crew Six face off with an enemy once more. It will take every bit of his skill and faith, but Besim is determined to keep both her and his team safe.
Corporal Dejan Kostic had hoped to never see his cousin again. But the past always has ways of catching up. His team didn’t abandon him when they learned the hard way about his ties to a notorious crime family, and he’s going to repay that trust however he can. Even if he’s now got more to lose than just his crew.
The streets of Dunhare turn into a chessboard—Crew Six against the Shrikes. But not all allies can be trusted. And not everyone will emerge unscathed.
The pulse pounding conclusion to the Urban Fantasy x Spec ops series featuring magic in the open, heartbonds, brothers in arms, and lots of humor/snark.
C.M. Banschbach is a native Texan and would make an excellent Hobbit if she weren’t so tall. She’s a pizza addict, a multi-faceted fangirl, and a firm believer in being authentic—even if it means acting like a dork sometimes! When not writing fantasy stories packed full of adventure and snark, she works as a pediatric physical therapist where she happily embraces the fact that she never actually has to grow up.
She also writesYA/MG fantasy-adventure as Claire M. Banschbach.
I put off writing this review for a couple days because I kept hoping my brain would give me a more eloquent review that better conveys how much I enjoyed this series (also I was busy), but this will have to do.
A satisfying conclusion to this series and to the character growth arcs of every member of Crew Six, with at least seeds planted for promising romances. The hope and persistence and love/care that pulses through these books is just so good. I love how Claire neither downplays, ignores, or hides that yeah, sometimes life sucks and awful things happen, but also the focus is still on goodness and connection and healing and the choices we make to make the world a little bit better.
I knew how something would or wouldn't happen (and may have yelled out loud at my phone/Kindle app "GO GET _____, GUYS, COME ON" at one point because of something that was so expertly and satisfyingly set-up/foreshadowed), but the emotions of the characters were so well done and I'd developed so much affection for them all over the series that when the characters were going through it, I still teared up.
Where else would I have been? IYKYK. I'm gonna tear up again. *group hug for all my boys*
WHAT A RIDE. I’ve been waiting for this book since binge-reading this series back in April and what a satisfying conclusion. The first and third books are still tied for my favourites. I loved how grief was handled in the first book and I’m a sucker for the single-dad trope in the third. I can’t wait for the spinoff!
Also, a random fact: I forgot to turn on my alarm yesterday night and I would have ended up late for work if it weren’t for this book. Yep. At 7am, I got a very loud email notification that my preorder for this book is now available on my kindle which then led to me scrambling to get ready in thirty minutes. Still, it saved my day🤣
I'm way too tired and way too full of emotions (pleased emotions) to write an understandable review but I love this book and series and characters. Cried and laughed a good bit and my mouth dropped open at least once. Loved seeing how everything got tied up too. So epic!
What a conclusion! Had me like 😨😡😩😧🥹😃😬😭 😁😍🥰for real...
It was an absolute rollercoaster to get there, but I was so satisfied with the ending. Some elements felt a little rushed, but that's completely understandable considering just how much ACTION and ROMANCE were packed into this delicious five book series. As a slow, easily overwhelmed reader, I love the shorter book lengths, and Claire paces the stories really consistently throughout the series. The Drax Guard is a perfect blend of heart-warming, heart-wrenching and heart-pounding. Thrilling and also... cozy? IDK how that works, but Claire sure can pull it off!
Although I loved this book, it didn't hit quite the same as books 1, 3, and 4 did for me. I think that's because I just don't connect as much with Besim as I do the rest of the crew. I enjoyed Besim and Maya's story, but Dejan's POVs were my favorite and the continued plot from book 4 definitely had my main interest.
Side note, but nothing makes this RN's heart as happy as reading medical scenes written by fellow healthcare workers 🥲 The accuracy is just 🤌🤌🤌 Even while I was furious with Claire for putting [Redacted] in ICU, I was still like, "Yep that's how the monitoring systems would look," and "Yes! Intubation after a code is accurate!!" Lol. Once a nurse, always a nurse 🫡
I guess there's not much else to say. I loved the series deeply and I'm sorry to say goodbye to Crew Six, but they'll definitely be living rent free in my head from now on. I would do ANYTHING to read a police/detective procedural set in this world because the mix of tech and magic are one of my favorite elements and never stop being equal parts AWESOME and surprisingly practical. But for now I'll content myself to scurry off to the rest of Claire's backlog 🥰📚
You want a hair-raising climax to a series that will keep you anxiously pacing your living room far too late at night? Look no further.
The moments of scary or awesome realization were perfectly timed and flawlessly executed. And the ending of the last action sequence was terrifying in the best way, then followed by restoration better than anything I'd expected or hoped for.
And that final ending. My goodness. It's warm and cozy, and genuinely does make me want to go back and start the series from the beginning just so I can hang out with these characters a bit longer.
No notes. All incoherent screeching. Amazing series, and an amazing end to it.
4.5 stars, rounded up because it also made me cry. More of an ensemble book than a spotlight character book (though they all have plenty of the team being a team), but very well done in that regard. I was mad that Remy got put through so much this book but like. Cool storyline reveal went along with it so FINE. NOW LEAVE MY SON ALONE. LET HIM HAVE HIS DATE. ALLLLLL THE DATES.
Loved that we got more Sara and more Tara and more basically everybody in this book (but especially those two). And Maya's premise stressed me out but I really liked how it was played off, less drama and duplicity than I was expecting. Love her and her butterfly clips and her spark of fight :)
Wrapping up thoughts on the series:
If comfort reads had a poster child.
The worldbuilding is fun and well-integrated but I realized quickly it's not really *why* I'm here, I'm here for the characters, so the parts that hyper-focus on this or that aspect of how the world history is different from real Earth are like "okay whatever" for me. And the parts where we re-introduce the characters and the setting in the first five pages always have me like "ahHereWeGoAgain". But all of that is brief at most and what we get along with it is worth ANY amount of HereWeGoAgain. :)
Books ranked least to most fave:
Faultline Flashpoint Shrike Stoneheart Conduit
Overall rating for the series is late teens/adult and up; would not give it to my 15-year-old sister but figured the 18-year-old could handle it. Language contains lots of fantasy expletives that are obviously substituting for very strong real-world expletives as well as some real-world language and gestures. The first book has the heaviest real-world swearing, including 2x one especially vulgar term I decided to black out of my copy but which doesn't appear in any of the sequels. All romance content is very tame, sexual content nil, but book 3's storyline deals with an incident of past sexual assault (very sensitively/discreetly addressed), & a few of the books have what could be called mildly suggestive dialogue played for humorous misunderstanding or averting tension. Aside from that, just genre-typical violence and peril.
Recommend for the intersection of avid fantasy readers and enjoyers of PTSD recovery/found family/brotherhood content, and anyone who thinks that a blend of urban fantasy and spec-ops military sounds fun.
This book was such a fun way to close the Crew Six storyline. It mostly follows the POVs of Maya, Besim, and Dejan with a few cameos from Cieran and Remy. This definitely gave it the feel of being a "all of Crew Six" book versus a story about one of the members while still being embedded in an ensemble cast.
The ending was certainly tense and emotional. Claire nailed the different emotions from different characters in a very relatable way.
I'm sad to see the series come to an end, but if end it must, I'm quite content with this ending.
This was an absolutely INCREDIBLE conclusion to this series!! The resolution to everyone's storyline, the ROMANCE, the action!!!! I feel like everything was wrapped up so PERFECTLY Crew Six, as usual, made me feel SO many emotions. I love the loyalty, and I love how protective they are. And it's always fun to see how they interact with each others love interests! Anyways, I cried. Multiple times. This series is honestly one of my new favorites
I just finished this book and ohhh my gosh. Oh. My. GOSH What an ending to the series!! I laughed, I cried, I wanted to throw rocks at people—the bad guys, obviously—and generally just experienced the full spectrum of human emotions. I absolutely adored the romance. First, the main one, which we had hints of in book 2 and was beautifully expanded on here! Such a well done relationship, with protectiveness and adorable banter and just. Dang they're cute. I also really really love how this author always brings back previous romances so well!! We got moments with Cieran and Athina, Remy and Sara, AND Dejan and Tara! They just mix together into this amazing little family and I love them. Additionally, something this author does that I love is that she will have the love interest interact and bond with other members of the crew, not just the main lead who she's falling for. It just makes it feel very human and real and I LIKE IT. So different from other things I've read and watched and in a GOOD WAY. Speaking of which, I will never ever ever be over how much I love Crew Six. They are everything to me, I am obsessed with their dynamics and how much they care and push each other to be better. And how much they tease each other. The plot was brilliant—something else I love that this author does is every book leads perfectly into the next. The previous book hints at what the next book will bring or sets it up and I love it! It lends such a smooth flow to the story. There are. So many spoilerish scenes I could rant about. The plot twists and the new characters that I'm overly invested in despite them having approximately five scenes and then CHAPTER 26. HELP. STRAIGHT UP KICK TO THE CHEST. I do not cry at books but there were scenes. Tears were shed. But the ending is heartwarming don't worry IT WAS REALLY GOOD okay time to share this before I go completely insane. Read this book if you love brotherhood, sweet romance, and epic action!
What has come to be in classic Drax Guard: Crew Six fashion, I finished this book cover to cover in one go. Banschbach drives us right into the action of this 'final' operation and things just keep going and going and escalating to an explosive confrontation and conclusion. (I say 'final' because while this may be the finale of the series, the story and missions these guys go on will continue beyond the last page, and I love that about the ending).
Picking up soon after the exciting and emotionally bruising conclusion of STONEHEART, we're thrust into family feuds headed by crime lords, kidnappings, agency rivalries, deep cover agents, double agents, secret agents—ALL the agents, borderline volcanic magic, snarky banter that will make your sides ache, tasteful romance, heartwarming bromance, themes of courage, healing, family, overcoming trauma *gasps a deep breath* and all that buff guys beating up bad men action we love (even if we won't admit it aloud).
Banschbach wipes the floor when it comes to gripping storytelling, inescapable pacing, immersive worldbuilding, character voice and diversity, and navigating relationships without giving you a toothache. More like a stomachache. Because you're laughing twice as often. Honestly my favorite way to read romantic subplots.
100% an incredible climax and conclusion to a thrilling series. I laughed, I cried, I watched through my fingers as things got dicey and my heart broke a little, then exclaimed with great exclamation at the upswing toward an achingly bittersweet, hopeful end that left me dizzy! Happily ever after? I'll leave you to decide.
Let me preface this by saying - if you've been holding out on starting the Drax Guard because you wanted to be sure the ending was good, this is your sign to start reading. Why? Because this was a *fantastic* ending! 10/10 would recommend this series (which is seconded by everyone in my family who's read this).
All of our favorite characters return, and though I love them all equally, Dejan is my favorite.
This book features quotable lines, banter, brother/team dynamics, action, plus a sprinkle of romance (and so much more). A combination I've come to expect and love in this series. There is also so much heart in this story but nothing I can say here will do it justice.
I loved seeing all the things that tie in from previous books coming together at various points in this (can't be more specific, because spoilers, but trust me you'll know it when you see it). There's a lot more I wish I could elaborate on here, but I'm determined to keep this as spoiler free as possible. I will say one of the chapters made me cry, which doesn't often happen to me when reading books.
I read this in less than two days, and while I'm sad to see this particular story end, I've loved every moment of this ride, and it has definitely become one of my favorites. I will be re-reading Drax Guard probably much sooner than I should (I literally thought to myself while writing this if I could justify re-reading all of them already, and I think the answer is "yes".)
CWs: Nothing worse than anything previously in the series, I would rate the series as a whole PG-13 for violence, some language (the "stronger" swear words are made up), and mentions of past assault.
This book was so good. The snark, the sass, the band of brothers vibes. I have adored seeing each of the crew grow over the course of this series and each of them finding a lady. The Crew Six girls are formidable in their own ways and I want to see more of their friendship grow.
One of my favorite aspects of this series is the way each couple built each other up mutually. Both people in the relationship need each other, its not the case of perfect guy and messed up girl that seems to be all too prevalent in some books. Everyone in this series has a story, everyone is carrying a weight that they need help to bear. The relationships, both romantic and platonic, were the true highlight of this series.
The worldbuilding was utterly phenomenal and the combination of magic, alt history, and special forces worked so well. A truly excellent series.
I can’t believe it’s over. What a phenomenal conclusion, all the POVs brought together, and all the threads tied up. The romance in this series is just lovely; no drama, but a decent helping of trauma—just the way I like it 😉 It was fun seeing more of the crew on base, and the inner workings of the Drax Guard. And the story started gentle enough at the beginning, for relationships/friendships and all the existing connections to shine.
Some highlights for me: Eckhart (seriously, I need to reread and see if I missed more of this man in the earlier books—he’s an absolute gem!) Dejan getting stuck babysitting Maya (and the adorable little bit of bonding they had) All of the couples cuteness All of the POVs Besim’s faith slowly creeping its way through the crew I think Dej and Rem are even now…
The perfectly perfect conclusion to such a great series—I’ve never been this happy with a finale before, even with the bittersweet that always lingers with “the end” (even if I did sob straight through the last quarter…) I have no idea how Claire managed to bring it all together in less than 300 pages, but she did it masterfully! An absolute pro, y’all
Ah, yes. Another series that I’m never gonna shut up about. Shrike VERY NEARLY took me out, but what a fabulous conclusion to the series. I’m so in love. 🥹
