I didn’t realize this was the third book in a series, but I’ll definitely be going back to read the others! While some context might have added depth and clarity, I was still hooked from the start. The mystery kept me turning pages, constantly eager to see what would happen next and how each character would be involved. The plot felt real and grounded, making the stakes even higher, and the pacing was spot on—revelations came just at the right moments to keep me engaged.
What really stood out, though, were the relationships between the characters. The dynamics were so well-crafted that I was as invested in their personal connections as I was in solving the mystery itself. This book made me a fan of Webb, and I’m excited to read more of her work in the future.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable suspense and, being a Tennessean, I also loved the TN location and references!
** I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author and publisher! **
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the privilege to read this an Advanced Reader Copy for my honest review. I truly appreciate it.
Now this thriller hooked me from the beginning! I wanted to know the whole story immediately. Vera is a criminal analysis while Bent is the sheriff. They are on a mission to solve not one but two separate murders investigations. There were so many twists and turns where I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Even some chapter cliffhangers had me on the edge of my seat. I loved Vera’s and Bent’s working relationship as well as watching them grow closer together as time went on. Out of both murder investigations I was really hooked on Vera’’s sisters mother in law’s case. I truly wasn’t sure how that one was going to play out. I felt Vera was a strong character and I loved how she was able to trust her instincts and want to protect her pregnant sister.
Now there were times where I felt some chapters got repetitive or even felt too detailed. I felt like I was going in circles trying to piece the story together where I got kinda confused on my theories and the characters theories. So it was hard for me to keep all the facts straight. Then once I finally got to the end it was wrapped up into the last 10%-15% of the book. I just wanted it dragged out a little more for a thriller. But I truly enjoyed this thriller!
The local Fayetteville Sheriff, Gray Benton (Bent) and an investigative consultant, Vera, are faced with solving two different murders.
The first, occurs at a local millionaire’s estate, the Wilton’s, where four people have been found. No valuables are missing but the scene is questionable.
The second, is at Vera’s sister Luna’s house. Luna was working on the nursery for her baby with her mother in law (husband Jerome was not home). Luna ran out to grab some more paint and came back and the mother in law was dead, at the bottom of the stairs.
Can Vera solve these two cases before her family is ripped apart?
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this third installment in the Vera Boyett series! I’ve read the previous two in the past and was ready and excited to dive back into the storyline. Webb did a great job at keeping you guessing as to who the murderer was in two separate crimes and both twists surprised me!
Each book could be read as a standalone, but I absolutely recommend reading the whole series! Hoping for future installments.
I’d like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for sending me an arc of this book!
Four bodies are found in a cabin. Upon first glance, it appears to be a party gone wrong. However, after discovering that one of the supposed victims might have survived, the picture gets messier.
In another part of town, family drama involving one of the Boyett sisters takes a twisted turn resulting in tragedy.
Caught in the middle of both is criminal analyst Vera Boyett. Can she help Sheriff Benton solve his triple homicide while also clearing her sister’s name?
I love a good crime thriller, and this one delivered on everything: conspiracies, red herrings, twists, and even a little romance.
Overall, a good read! This was my first introduction to the Vera Boyett series and I’ll be going back to read the others!
Loved this so much ! I never thought I’d be that into a murder mystery, but I am pleasantly surprised !
Bent, Vera, Alicia, Luna, such great characters - the dynamic between Bent and Vera was so entertaining and kept you wanting more, working together and having their cute little moments Alicia - pulling through against all odds !
I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who did it the whole way through, which is amazing as I normally figure things out within a storyline pretty quick.
Strong characterizations and a compelling plot make this well-written novel a true treat to read, another stellar installment in a series that continues to surprise and satisfy. It’s layered and complex without ever becoming confusing, and the tension is utterly enticing.
This time, criminal analyst Vera and Sheriff Gray “Bent” Benton are drawn into a chilling investigation: a secluded cabin in the Tennessee woods, three dead, one clinging to life, and no valuables missing. The property belongs to one of the wealthiest men in the country, adding a layer of mystery to an already baffling scene.
But the stakes rise even higher when Vera’s own family is pulled into a separate nightmare. Her sister Luna, pregnant and preparing a nursery with her mother-in-law, steps out for paint—only to return and find her mother-in-law dead at the bottom of the stairs. Luna seems an unlikely suspect, yet every new detail casts a darker shadow. Desperate to protect her sister, Vera must untangle a web of secrets that threatens to destroy everything she holds dear.
This thriller hooked me from the very first page. With so many twists and turns, I genuinely didn’t know what was coming next—and I loved that. The pacing is sharp, the emotional stakes are high, and the dual investigations keep the tension taut throughout.
I especially appreciate that Webb doesn’t rehash previous books. As someone who’s followed the series, I find it refreshing that each installment stands strong on its own. That said, I’d still recommend starting from the beginning to fully appreciate the character arcs and subtle callbacks.
This story has it all: conspiracies, emotional depth, unexpected twists, and just the right touch of romance. A must-read for fans of smart, character-driven thrillers...Release on Dec 9.
Secrets You Can't Keep is a gripping addition to Debra Webb’s Vera Boyett series. I really enjoy reading about Vera and her family. The plot unfolds in a small Tennessee town rocked by a shocking triple homicide. The tension is palpable as crime analyst Vera Boyett is called in to navigate the chaos alongside Sheriff Gray "Bent" Benton.
The complexity of the case intensifies with each chapter, as Vera wrestles with both professional and personal dilemmas, especially with her pregnant sister tangled in a web of suspicion. That part of the story was very interesting and added an additional mystery to the story.
The character development is great, particularly Vera, whose determination and compassion make her a compelling protagonist. The relationship dynamics between Vera and Bent blend both professional teamwork and personal connection seamlessly. The pacing is very good, with twists and turns that kept me guessing as I went back and forth on who could be involved and why.
Overall, Secrets You Can't Keep is a wonderfully crafted mystery. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-written, suspenseful thriller. I would suggest starting from book 1 so you can get to know each character. I look forward to more in this series.
Secrets are the name of the game for Valeri Edwin as she enters her boss’s playboy cabin in the woods. Horrendously, she was greeted by a coyote licking his bloody lips. Even more horrific were the three dead bodies she found, including her boss, Thomas Wilton.
His new wife was found among the dead, but she was barely breathing. Her fall appears to be accidental, whereas the others were stabbed to death. Was she, Alicia, a victim of an unspeakable crime spree, or a knife-wielding murderer? The bloody knife lying on the step next to her body speaks volumes.
Sheriff Gray Benton is counting on Vera Boyett to work her magic and solve this crime. It is right down her alley . . . criminal analysis is her forte. But unfortunately, this isn’t the only case Boyett is working on. Her pregnant sister is involved in a mess of her own, and she is appearing guiltier and guiltier as each day goes by. Can Boyett solve both mysteries?
The Secrets You Can’t Keep is the third book in the Vera Boyett series. It is brilliantly written with plenty of twists and turns. Deeper Than the Dead and Closer Than You Know were action-packed mysteries, but this one is the best of the best!
This ARC was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This reviewer looked forward to reading Secrets You Can't Keep, book three in the Vera Boyett series, and the novel did not disappoint. I think it's the best of the series so far and hope there are more books planned. Every aspect of the novel is riveting, the characters are well drawn, and the writing is flawless. The plotlines involving multiple murders create especially difficult crimes for Vera and Sheriff Gray Benton to solve, but the pair are relentless in their pursuit of justice. I couldn't put the book down.
For those of us who enjoy a touch of romance in our stories, Vera and Bent's personal relationship grows deeper in this novel, and I absolutely loved that. Author Debra Webb has written many romantic suspense novels, which probably explains the addition of an emotional connection between the protagonists in her standalones.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Secrets You Can't Keep. Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for providing an advance copy of the book to read and review. This review will post to Bayside Book Reviews.com at https://baysidebookreviews.com and its Instagram page on release day. Follow us! *NetGalley Top Reviewer*
When I was scrolling through NetGalley for potential ARCs, I didn’t realize this was the third book in a series—but since I’d already downloaded it, I went for it anyway. I’m glad I did! Even though it’s part of a series, it reads surprisingly well as a standalone, though I can see how starting from the beginning would give a deeper understanding of Vera’s character.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Vera and Bent, both as law enforcement partners and as two people navigating the intense emotional toll of their work. Webb does a great job portraying the gritty reality of investigative life—the long hours, the trauma, and the resilience it takes to keep going.
The multiple POVs, high stakes, and unexpected twists kept me hooked throughout. I especially liked how each murder case had its own motive and tension, which made the mystery feel layered and satisfying.
Overall, a thoroughly engaging and twisty read—definitely a solid 4.5 stars from me!
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was left voluntary and solely my experience and opinion.
Three dead. One survivor. And a sister whose life may depend on the truth.
In Secrets You Can’t Keep, criminal analyst Vera Boyett is pulled into a chilling triple homicide at a secluded cabin in Tennessee — and just as the investigation heats up, her own family is thrown into chaos when her sister’s mother-in-law dies under suspicious circumstances. As Vera races against time to uncover the truth, every secret revealed comes with a price.
This book had everything I love in a small-town thriller — tangled family drama, strong female lead, and twists that kept me guessing until the very end. 🔍 The dual-plot structure gave me major “can’t-put-it-down” energy, balancing crime-scene tension with emotional depth.
It’s book three in the Vera Boyett series, but it reads well as a standalone (though I kind of want to go back and read the first two now!).
If you love smart, methodical thrillers with heart — and stories where family loyalty is both a strength and a curse — you’ll want this one on your TBR.
📅 Release Date: December 9, 2025
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the arc!
Secrets You Can't Keep by Debry Webb, published by Thomas & Mercer is the latest masterpiece from one of my very few fav authors. Book three in the Vera Boyett Series, the novel is a stand alone, but there are cross-overs to previous books in the series. Vera just barely survived the last case and is recuperating in her hometown Fayetteville. But evil never sleeps and soon the profiler is called to help investigate the latest gruesome multi-murder case. To make matters worse another dead body is found in the home of her pregnant sister. So make it five from the start. Phew. Her trusted and beloved kind of sidekick and boyfriend, Sheriff Gray Benton leans on her, but gives a helping hand too. This couple is unstoppable, literally. I sarted reading and soon I was unable to put the book down, I just Had to know what happens, who did what and Who did it. And I guessed wrong more than one time. Twisty, suspenseful, full of unexpected turns til the end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this gem.
Debra Webb returns with another gripping instalment in the Vera Boyett series, and this one’s a knockout. Secrets You Can't Keep is a masterclass in layered suspense, where small-town secrets collide with personal stakes in the most chilling ways.
From the moment Vera is called to investigate a triple homicide at a secluded cabin, the tension is palpable. But what makes this thriller truly compelling is how the professional and personal blur—Vera’s own family is entangled in a separate, equally disturbing mystery. Webb balances both threads with finesse, weaving a narrative that’s emotionally charged and relentlessly paced.
Vera is sharp, intuitive, and deeply human. Her bond with Sheriff Bent adds texture without distracting from the central mystery. And as the cases unfold, the revelations are as satisfying as they are unsettling.
If you love thrillers with heart, grit, and a protagonist you’ll root for every step of the way, this one’s not to be missed.
With thanks to Debra Webb, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
This police procedural from Debra Webb ticks all the boxes for a pretty solid read. There are not one, but two independent murders that the police are investigating, so there is definitely a lot going on, but I didn't have trouble keeping it all straight. I do think we could have cut several of the murder victims and this would have been a cleaner, tighter book overall, but what's a mystery without a red herring or seven? I definitely would have preferred to have read the rest of the series, as there is a *lot* of referring back to past events. I appreciate Webb not rehashing past books, as I hate that as a reader that's stuck with a series, but as a new reader I could tell I was missing quite a bit of back-story. So while this is a stand-alone, I would recommend starting at the beginning.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the Vera Boyett series. Vera is asked to assist her gorgeous sheriff boyfriend, Bent, on a triple murder case. The facts are confusing and not at all what they initially appear. As they work to solve the murders, Vera’s very pregnant sister is involved in the death of her mother-in-law.
I loved the second book, but this one is even better! Debra Webb has a gift for skillfully weaving a story. This story is intricately detailed and packed with mystery and action. I loved how Vera faces so many challenges, and comes out swinging each time. It’s fun to see the characters working together and the bond between the three sisters. It’s also equally fun to have a nosey and sinister character or two thrown in! The mysteries will keep you guessing right up until the end! You definitely won’t be bored! *Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
Vera Boyette is a crime consultant and often works with her boyfriend, Bent, who is the sheriff. One morning Bent is called to the cabin of Thomas Wilton when his assistant finds three bodies and a badly hurt women. At the same time, Vera gets a call from her sister, Lulu, when she finds her mother-in-law dead at the bottom of Lulu's stairs! Bent knows that he cannot solve the triple murder without Vera and Vera knows she must prove her sister innocent.
This was such an exciting read, right from the beginning. There are twists, turns and red herrings that I couldn't guess what was going to happen next. It was wonderfully written and I could not put it down. There is great character development and Debra Webb does a fantastic job of making sure the reader stays engaged. I wish I had know that this was the 3rd in a series. I will have to go back and read the others.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. I really enjoyed it.
In the next book in the Vera Boyett series, SECRETS YOU CAN’T KEEP by Debra Webb, I am hooked in the first chapter. Valeri Erwin works for Thomas Wilton, a retired billionaire. Valeri finds the dead bodies of Thomas and his wife, Alicia, and another couple. Vera Boyette, a crime analyst, and Gray Benton (a sheriff in Fayetteville, Tennessee) are on the case. How and why did murders occur? Who is responsible for the deaths?
I am immediately drawn into this thriller. Debra Webb knows how to create suspense. Descriptions are wonderful, and the characters are well-developed. The highlight of this book, however, is the suspenseful plot. This novel can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the series in order. I want to see where Vera’s relationship with Bent goes and look forward to reading future books in the Vera Boyett series. Thank you, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley, for the chance to read and review an advance reader copy of SECRETS YOU CAN’T KEEP.
Thanks Netgalley for sharing the ARC for this book. I jumped into the book without reading the first two book in the series. I feel that it is an interesting read, and that, it catch my attention to the end. While reading, I realised I’m more interested in knowing about Vera’s history because it was mentioned multiple times, and the. I realised this is a book of a series. This made me very excited and now, I want to read the first two books. However, though I will recommend the book, one part that I was yearning more is finding cookie crumbs and search for the culprit together, but we were stuck with the suspects from the beginning and hence lost the last 100 pages of intense twists vibes. Overall, the book is a nice read and I am now looking forward to reading the first two books in the series.
If you like mysteries where you can't quite figure out how all the puzzle pieces fit together, this is a book for you. Bent is called out to a millionaire's cabin where there are three people murdered and on barely alive. He wants to have Vera come help him look at the crime scene but before he can call her out, she calls him. Her sister came home to find her mother-in-law dead at the bottom of her stairs. So there is not one but two cases to solve. There are twists and turns in both that have you second guessing your theory in who the murderer is. It is fast paced action with a mix of character development that has you invested in them as much as finding out who and why it all happened. A good mystery for those that like a few surprises in their stories.
I really enjoyed this book. It kept my interest the entire time and I did not guess what had actually happened. I hadn’t read the first two books in the series and while it was fine, I feel like reading the first two books would have been helpful for the background info. My plan is to now go and read the first two books.
I will say it was also nice to read a book where the main female character is not completely helpless and was able to solve things on her own/wasn’t waiting for the man to figure everything out.
Secrets You Can’t Keep is a superior thriller that succeeds on every level. The plotting is intricate and intelligent, the characters are psychologically complex, and the atmosphere is thick with suspense. Debra Webb has crafted a novel that is both a gripping page-turner and a thoughtful examination of the dark side of human nature. It is a testament to her skill that she can balance two compelling mysteries, imbuing both with emotional weight and a relentless sense of dread. For readers who crave a thriller with both brains and heart, this novel is an absolute must-read.
I have loved all of the Boyett sisters from the beginning of this series, and I am sad to know that there will not be any additional installments in this series.
Bent and Vera find themselves at the center of multiple investigations again, one at a local billionaire's farm and the other at Vera's baby sister Luna's home.
While the suspense and mystery is a great part of this series (Vera is a consultant to law enforcement), my favorite part of this series is the bond that is shared by the Boyett sisters and the lengths that they will go to so that they may protect each other.
Secrets You Cant Keep-Book 3 in the Vera Boyette Series.
I’m so glad I started this series. You instantly fall in love with the characters from Vera (Crime Analyst), her sister Eve (The Mortician), and Eve (The Librarian).
The story takes off with murders in two different locations. A cabin, naked bodies are found stabbed to death with cocaine.
The second at Luna’s house and the victim is her Mother in law who hates her guts.
This was so good from the first page to the last. I love Debra Webb. Her books are easy to love and unforgettable.
An excellent police procedural about two murder cases, with underlying themes about family, relationships and recovering from childhood trauma.. The book reminded me a bit of Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series but with a slower pace. The satisfying ending wrapped up both cases and tied a bow on the main character's personal relationship. Told from the perspectives of a criminal consultant and a Sheriff and set in a small town, this is Book 3 in a new series but can be read as a standalone.
I couldn’t put this one down! Vera Boyett is back and caught up in not just one chilling mystery but two; one that has her whole town on edge and another that hits way too close to home. I loved the twists, the small-town secrets, and Vera’s fierce determination to protect her family no matter what. Debra Webb always delivers a gripping ride and this was no exception. Big thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this!
Secrets You Can't Keep (Vera Boyett Book 3) by Debra Webb is another wonderful thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very first page and slowly release you at the end that leaves you wanting more. Author Debra Webb knows how to spin a web of a story that entertains and chills at the same time. Vera and Sheriff Gray Benton are an unstoppable couple that can get the job done. I enjoyed this book and can't wait for more. Highly recommended.
Secrets you can’t keep is the third book in the Vera Boyett Series.
In this book, Vera is pulled in to a case her boyfriend, Sheriff Gray Benton, is investigating. They try to decipher what happened in the triple homicide, where only one person ended alive, the wife of the owner of the state, Alicia. Unfortunately, she is not in a state where she can answer any questions so that leaves them to question anyone who could have had contact with them.
As if life couldn’t get more complicated, Vera’s pregnant sister is in need of help as she might be blamed for the sudden death of her mother in law.
This story had multiple twists, truths that came to light and a lot of tension. Overall, the story was engaging and I enjoyed how the plot was developed.
Secrets You Can't Keep by Debra Webb. Book 3 in the Vera Boyett series is a complex and twisty police procedural with two murder cases with a myriad of dark secrets and family drama. Very good edition to the Vera Boyett Series.
Thank you to the author, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
This one was a twisty mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Two different cases and one involves Vera’s sister. So much suspense and drama to keep you on your toes. Bent and Vera are running around in circles to find the killers with opposition around every corner.
This series is getting better with every new installment. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
