Close Call
This read I went back and forth a little bit. After Book 4 in the Fated Mates series, Amir & Anora's book, I counted myself out of Wintermoon. I decided that both Book 3 and 4 so terribly missed the mark for me, myself, and I that there was no need to keep plugging along when I was so thoroughly disappointed in the storyline, pacing, and basic key plot points. I hashed it all out in my previous reviews and laid it to rest. So imagine my surprise when randomly being the mood reader I am, mood reading was mood reading, and I decided to give Healing Hazel a go. And enjoy it I did! This entry isn't as trauma-heavy as one would think, it was hot in a fun smutty way and also infuriating in a not so fun smutty way.
The Good
🥰Hazel as a character is just deliciously fun. She has trauma, she calls baggage sadly. But all around she's a good FMC. She yearns for love and approval, she yearns for a home. I'm so happy she got with a Dragon. He was just what she needed and how dragon culture works is the perfect fit for Hazel's personality and needs.
🥰Dominic was a stand up guy. He had his morals and stood his ground. His love for his mate transcended any lagging problems he had with Bailey witches. Most of all he was willing to tear something up over his mate. "Where you go, I go" is just swoon
🥰I will admit when I'm wrong. And I was wrong, in the previous books I enjoyed Jacob and Hazel's chemistry. They weren't giving bro/sis vibes and I just really couldn't stand Angie so her being Jacob's mate gave me the sads. I was more intrigued by Hazel and Jacob's story and connection. Now I see that's because Hazel is that interesting of a character. Even though I still feel Jacob's book did him dirty, I do feel Dominic was a sweet, protective, and a healer MMC. As a budding doctor, he truly saw those missing pieces in Hazel and felt his love was about making her feel safe enough to fully and truly heal.
🥰Their romance was just so sweet and well done. Technically this was a slow burn but it didn't feel it and as always the smut scenes were solid. 🌶️ the smex was explicit but it wasn't anything too raunchy or freaky.
🥰Breeding and immediate mate-bonding came back in full force this read.
The Meh
🤔Some members had good reason to feel uncomfortable with Hazel and the way it was addressed was just weird in a pacing sense. Some the change literally happened in one-5 sentence paragraph, from extra discomfort and malice to sure whatevs and some took chapters but once the switch came it was immediate.
🤔The whole Luna/Alpha connection with the Dragons is just...odd to me. I tried to just be whatever over it in the other book with Sam/Lauren but it really doesn't make sense flushed out here. It's as if the Alpha doesn't truly have power, just the Luna but the Luna isn't connected to the Alpha because of the kids she birthed. I don't know it's just not my cup of tea.
🤔The underlying message that Black people/culture should just accept or make space for the people or things that makes us uncomfortable as the sign of progress. That irked a little. There wasn't true acknowledgement of the trauma and pain the other felt in their discomfort. Just "gosh get over it".
The Ugly
😝The AI covers actually do bother me a lot. It takes away from the story in my opinion. And if an author is going to use AI, which drains resources from underprivileged, usually Black communities, can it at least be accurate. We get the description of turquoise eyes for Dominic. And the nice little extra note that a Dragons eye color is based on his powers. His are turquoise because he can call on lighting. On the cover his eyes are the same startling blue of Hazel's. As of late, once I realized AI was used, I struggle with even posting or recommending these books due to the AI usage.
😝Angie stays annoying the ever loving snot out of me. Glad she was only in a few scenes. But each scene she had I was like "shut up Angie!" or " 🖕🏽 Angie". It stayed one or the other.
😝Amil was the most anti-climatic ending ever. I thought Anya was bad. Noooo, Anya wasn't as bad as this. It felt like Amil's character was a straight up waste. Like what was the purpose then? I also felt some threads were interesting to his character but we never got any depth to them. This is apart of the overall pacing issue present in all Wintermoon books. The short stories shine brighter because the storytelling is tighter. In these longer books we get these slow paced storylines for the couple and then the conflict is hurried up and resolved in the last 5-10% of the story. As for Hazel's cousin, a straight up menace introduced in like chapter 3 or something, he's ending felt very "🤷🏾 moving on we got other things to do now". No for real, how is he introduced as this big deal problem and that's how it ends? But I guess his non-ending ending wasn't as bad as Tiffany's. Like what the what was that?! We saw none of that on page at all. Was this supposed to be closing out her storyline? If so, we never resolved anything with her sister. And really what was up with her ending. Why was all of this so rushed? The last 10% felt thrown together hurriedly.
😝The dreaded 3rd Act miscommunication trope reared it's ugly head and I was really over Hazel's shenanigan, we deserved a good grovel for what she did but we never got it because the MMCs in these books are conduits to giving FMCs orgasms.
😝Aya's characterization here felt like whiplash. A matter of fact Anya's redemption arc felt like a big ole 👎🏽 to me. I wasn't feeling it at all.
😝What was up with making Dominic's powers be lighting only for it to not come up again? That felt like a missed opportunity.
Overall
All-in-all, I didn't mind this read at all. It flew by quickly. And this book for me felt like a return to form for the author and I'm punching my ticket back to Wintermoon.
