Maine Lumberjacks #1

Caught in the Axe

Rate this book
My ex’s brother is officially off-limits. Right? He’s ten years older. He’s only in town for a few weeks. And did I mention he’s my ex-boyfriend’s brother? But when I agree to be the grumpy lumberjack’s temporary assistant, it gets harder and harder to resist him. He’s all beard, broad shoulders, and growls, but I savor every one of his rare smiles.

I’m so close to the fresh start I’ve been working toward for so long, but while I’m ready to leave behind the moose, the lumberjacks, and the crazy small-town gossip, I can’t stay away from Owen. We’re tasked with cleaning up a disaster in order for his family to move on from their painful past, and we can only succeed if we trust one another. Our late nights, road trips, and inside jokes bring us too close and make it difficult to stay away. And while on a business trip, we don’t just cross the line, we demolish it. We’ve both been burned by the small-town rumor mill, so we agree to keep things quiet. But secrets don’t keep in Lovewell for long, and it’s only a matter of time before we get caught in the act. We’re headed in different directions and living different lives. And no matter how badly I want him, he can never truly be mine.

Author’s Caught in the Axe is a standalone small-town romance featuring a nerdy, grumpy lumberjack with a heart of gold hidden under his flannel shirt and a sunshine ex-beauty queen who loves to challenge him. If you enjoy flirty banter, wood chopping, moose shenanigans, and possessive mountain men, then take a trip to Lovewell and meet the Maine Lumberjacks.

Series Welcome to Lovewell, Maine, where the moose outnumber the people and you can’t swing an axe without hitting a hot, grumpy lumberjack. The Maine Lumberjacks Series are ALL standalones but are most fun when read in order!

One word: editing. This book has no buisness being as long as it is. And then to glaze over the romantic weekend bit with “we laughed and talked and really got to know each other”

WHAT!?!?!

I read every waking minute of these people’s lives and this is the bit we skip!?!?

Fuck you book.

this was SUCH a good start to the series.

owen has to leave his life in the city temporarily to go back to his small hometown to help untangle the family problems his dad caused. he has a mountain of paperwork ahead of him so his brothers kindly get him an assistant to help… except the assistant happens to be gorgeous and perfect and his brother’s ex girlfriend.

this was so good. owen was EVERYTHING. i mean he imported gluten free flour to make her pizza for christ’s sake!!!! and delia so deserved it after putting herself second and feeling less than for so long. their chemistry was SO hot and i loved the little bit of suspense we got that seems like it’ll carry on through the rest of the series.

i’m just a sucker for a guy who chops wood… what can i say?

So to be honest I was just super bored and skipped after 30%...

This novel is wayyy too long ( 500+ pages ) and I didn't really like how the trope was handled 🫢

Hope my next read is better 🤞🤍

So juicy! Ex bf’s brother small town romance. Dual POVs. So many complex relationships with maximum drama. Gives 90210 crossed with hallmark vibes but with winter/ Maine & lumberjacks. Slow burn, he falls first, age gap tropes. Super nostalgic. Several books in the series! I am on to the next!

my second book my Daphne Elliot and i adored it 🥺 possible spoilers

“You can have whatever you want. I’m all yours. For tonight, this year, or forever. I’m here if you want me.”

💗 small town
💗 ex-boyfriends brother
💗 age gap (28/38)
💗 close proximity
💗 workplace romance
💗 he falls first & harder
💗 no third act
💗 lumberjack vibes

Owen comes home to help his brothers with the sell of their family business after their father was caught running multiple illegal activities through it. he wants to be in and out within 2 weeks and get back to his life in Boston where he is a CFO of his best friends company. Lila is home while awaiting the start of grad school. she’s trying to save as much money as she can for her move to New York to live with her besties and attend NYU. this is where she takes on a 2nd or 3rd(?) job with Owen, helping him sort through and put together their records for the sale.

the minute Owen lays eyes on Lila he just knows he won’t be leaving without asking her out. that is until he finds out who she is and that she’s his brothers ex of 8 years 🥴

i loved their friendship that blossomed into their relationship. Owen was so sweet and caring from the start. he believed in her and backed her fully. i loooove when my two mcs are smart snd the fmc can kick ass in meetings where the mmc just sits back and watches with pride 😮‍💨
Owen was down so bad but he wasn’t going to let his feelings derail her plans. he didn’t care she was going to NYU or what their small town would say about them. he just wanted her 😭🥺

the way he always had gluten free snacks on hand for her AND the man bought a $1,000 pizza oven + all gluten free ingredients to try and make the best gluten free pizza for her 🥺🥺 adorable
he was onboard for all the weird Maine sights she wanted to see and went right along.

i loved seeing the characters from The Momcoms i didn’t finish the book or series but i’ve read another book or two where they made an appearance and i enjoyed it!

the only thing that bothered me here was the fact that Owen wanted to scream from the rooftops that him and Lila were together but Lila was soo scared and determined to keep everything a secret. now i can understand her reasoning.. i guess. she didn’t want the whole town to know she was dating her exes (older, successful) brother when they already think she’s a gold digger who broke the brothers heart. and she knew it would end soon. however…. poor Owen 😭 knew she was it for him and was willing to have any kind of relationship she would allow. i hated that he kinda just took whatever scraps she threw at him

At first I liked it, then they had sex and I started being disappointed. I guess future books will be about Hebert's Brothers so I'll see if I'm interested in their tropes

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this, as this is the first book I have read by this author and I must say, I enjoyed it. It was a pretty fun and interesting read.

What to expect:

🪓 Age Gap
🪓 Boss/Employee
🪓 Geeky Lumberjack
🪓 Ex-Boyfriend’s Older Brother
🪓 ALL THE DRAMA
🪓 Slow Burn
🪓 Small Town Romance
🪓 ALL THE FEELS
🪓 Spicy 🌶️
🪓 Workplace Romance
🪓 Grumpy/Sunshine

Lila and Owen are so cute together. They were perfect. It made my heart so happy. Their friendship, connection, chemistry and banter were everything and the way Owen truly cared about Lila. You could tell that they were meant to be. They just connected perfectly.

I enjoyed the secondary characters in the book too, I think they made the book that much more exciting, funny and entertaining to read. The banter and teasing from Tucker, Finn and the Gagnons had me cackling!

I loved the bond and how close Lila is with her best friends, Willa and Magnolia. It makes me think of me and my best friends and our relationship and how close I am with them and that they are just like my sisters too.

As I said, this was my first book by this author and it most definitely won’t be my last. This book is a prime example of why I love romance books so much. It had suspense, spice, drama and ALL THE FEELS and it was extremely well written, with excellent character development.
I can’t wait to see what else Daphne has up her sleeve and I can’t wait to check out her backlist, because if her other books are anything like this one I just read. I NEED TO READ THEM ALL!!!

5 STARS!!!

Started out good. Really liked the writing. Somewhere in the middle it lost me. I didn’t like or get the reason the characters couldn’t be together. Ending for these characters was blah. Ending for other characters for the next book was better.

Daphne Elliot's small town romance Caught In The Axe revolves around CFO Owen Herbert and his assistant Lila Webster.

Daphne is known for ensuring all of her heroes are man-obsessed and would stop at nothing to win their woman. For example, Owen would go out of his way to get Lila boxes full of gluten-free food. He would even try his hand at making gluten-free cookies.

Even so, I cherished Lila and Owen's relationship. They were so ideal for one another.

The notion that Lila would want to break up with Owen so easily was the only thing that irritated me.

I will say though that the way Daphne ended this book has me excited for the next.

*Thank you to the author, Daphne Elliot , for providing me with this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.*

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

#CurrentSituation: I AM OBSSESED WITH ALL THINGS Daphne Elliot!!

Caught in the Axe is/was my very first experience with Daphne Elliot and at merely 11% I knew without a shadow of a doubt that she was my people! So of course I did an immediate deep dive into what was, what is, and what will be of her. Kindle Unlimited for the #win! LOLOL Also, I have got to start listening to more 🎤Mollie Stark🎤 audiobooks! This chic is legit fun! She didn’t just make me fall head over feet for Lila, but she elevated her sassy no-nonsense personality, and it was a party in my ears every time she narrated! She was absolutely perfect! 🎤Aiden Snow🎤 was an excellent choice for Owen! His deep timber allows for the reader to easily picture a “burly lumberjack” individual but it’s also quite sexy to me so I really enjoyed that aspect! ;) 👏Absolute 5++ STAR audio experience!👏

There is nothing that is not a #swoonfest when it comes to Owen Hebert. He may have a “gruff” exterior and “grumpy” demeanor, but he is all sunshine and gumdrops when it comes to Lila Webster. Be still my heart! YOU GUYS, this story was everything! Not just the story, but everything else as well. (yeah, you’re gonna have to get on the Daphne Elliott train like I have to find out more LOL) I’ll only say that there are circumstances that both Lila and Owen have to “jump” over to create a better future for each other and with each other and they are just perfectly matched to get the job done!

If you’re reading this author for the first time with this book and you don’t want to immediately jump back and read her Lovewell Lumberjacks series in order to find out some details about Daddy Hebert and his nefarious goings on in the past, you just might not understand the assignment. LOL I AM IN THIS TOWN NOW and I must know ALL THE THINGS as they happened in real time! Like I said, Kindle Unlimited for the #win!

I not only enjoyed both Owen and Lila and their journey, but I also very much enjoyed all the secondary characters, and I am really looking forward to hopefully catch the rest of this series in audio! In the meantime, I’ll be in my corner devouring the Lovewell Lumberjacks series!

I love a pun, however, I did NOT love this book. Some parts were cute, but it didn't feel like the first book in the series. There were too many other relationships and events to keep track of concerning the family, friends and town. There were too many plot lines on the periphery. Every mention of one of his five brother's step kids just pulled me out of the book.

There is another book series, but it's about the previous generation, so I don't think that would help.

Not bad

MY Read - 500ish Pages
Small Town Romance
Forbidden Love - Brothers Ex Girlfriend
Boss\Assistant
Grumpy x Sunshine
Age Gap

Not a bad read but in places it felt a little slow, not sure if that was just my mood or the actual book but I will be continuing the series. I wish I had read the Lovewell Lumberjacks series first, I didn't realise one of the biggest stories was in that and I want to read Finns story too.
Owen has returned home to Lovewell to help sell up the family timber business for his brothers with the help of Lila, his youngest brothers ex who is also an accountant like him.
They have a few short weeks to turn things around and secure a sale but sparks fly, a secret romance blooms and of course they get their HEA with the next story lined up in the final chapter for the next brother.

This book started off slow, which was fine because I assumed it would build up to something but it felt as if a volcano was about to erupt but changed its mind at the last second. The ‘conflict’ around this couple was boring and I struggled to see why they couldn’t be together (which was basically the main plot)…I’m at 75% and yet I don’t feel the need to finish, maybe I will🤷🏽‍♀️

“This man didn’t fall fast, he imploded” – me, to Daphne, in her DMs, about the one and only Owen Hebert.

Daphne Elliot is back with a new romantic suspense series! Following the Heberts, Caught in the Axe picks up where Wood Riddance left off. With the murder of the Gagnon’s father solved and the Hebert’s father in prison, these two rival families have to put the past behind them and figure out a way to move forward. For the Hebert boys, they need to get their act together and sell the company, and fast.

Owen Hebert is back in Lovewell, Maine, to fix the financial mess that his father has left the company in and to get it ready and presentable to buyers. His intention is to get in, sell the company, and get out ASAP. He has a life in Boston and no desire to be in his hometown. He needs an assistant to help this process go as quick as possible, and in walks Lila Webster.

Lila knows that she shouldn’t be attracted to her ex’s grumpy older brother, who is also her boss. But where’s the fun in that? As Lila and Owen work to sell Hebert Lumber, giving in to their attraction becomes inevitable.

The chemistry between these two, oh LORD. Owen falls first, falls fast, and falls hard. Like, the hardest a man has ever fallen. He would walk over broken glass to get to Lila. He worships the ground she walks on, the air she breathes, and understands that he is lucky to love her. He goes out of his way to find the best gluten free restaurants, learns how to make gluten free pizza, buys her fancy pizza ovens to make said pizza in, and all while looking like a goddamn snack himself in a plaid flannel.

The way that Owen encourages Lila, supports her, cherishes her, adores her, it is my new standard for romance heroes. This man is the new blueprint. I adore him. I adore Lila. I adore Daphne. I just ADORE.

While this book is a standalone, and you could definitely pick up this series fresh, I HIGHLY recommend reading the Gagnon siblings first (because I love them so freaking much, and also because there’s a lot of history added to the story when you do).

Thank you to Daphne for the ARC of Caught in the Axe and for dealing with my screaming DMs about Owen, Lila, Adele’s 🐱, and GUS! I cannot wait for Pain in the Axe!!

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
SPICE:🔥🔥

Do I have a thing for Lumberjacks now? I just think I might! This book was so dang good and I absolutely devoured every single word of it.

OWEN HEBERT is exactly my type and I swooned over that man so FREAKING HARD. Straight up husband material right there.

Ahh! I can’t stop thinking about how good this book was.

TROPES ⬇️
✨ Small Town Romance
✨ Age Gap
✨ Brother’s Ex
✨ Forced Proximity

Owen and Lila own my whole damn heart and while Owen is straight up swoony, I have such a girl crush on Lila, probably one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read in a while.

Owen takes some leave from his job in Boston to sort out the mess of his families lumber operation that’s in shambles. he wants nothing to do with small town Maine, but his family needs him to sort out the books and arrange a buyer. And his assistant just happens to be his little brother’s ex, Lila who Owen is smitten with from the get go. This man has a competency kink a mile wide, and he is attracted to her as much for her smarts as his is for her beauty.

And I loved that. Owen is so cranky and really not willing to open up, be it everything he does for and with Lilia just breaks down his walls. This whole books was just absolutely perfect.

The banter, the family drama, the spice…. Just everything. This books was just effortlessly entertaining and I found myself so wrapped up in it.

Definitely read this, it’s absolutely fantastic, and one thing this southern girl can tell you, Maine is weird y’all and I’m here for it 🤣

• Lumberjack businessman MMC
• Spunky and brilliant FMC
• Age gap
• Forbidden
• Workplace romance
• Brother's ex

This was my first Daphne Elliot book! And I absolutely LOVED it. It was cute, angsty, and HOT. Checked all the boxes and more. These two characters couldn't have been more lovable.

Owen was a suit-wearing billionaire and a flannel-wearing lumberjack when he needed to be! Heck of a transition, and I adored every second. He was forced to go back to his hometown after an unfortunate event dealing with his father. So he returned to help sell the family business/land. Feeling bitter and a little frustrated, he takes over the legal part to help his brother out, who is running on fumes to keep everything up and running.

Lila was an absolute BOSS. She kept Owen on his toes. And never shied away from a challenge. Constantly surprising Owen with the knowledge she kept hidden from most of the world. After always being judged on her intelligence. She stepped in to help him figure things out with his family business/land.

"She was gorgeous and kind and intelligent, which meant there was no way I’d escape the next couple of weeks without developing a full-blown crush."

The last thing either of them expected was to fall for each other. This book was forbidden in the best way! I absolutely LOVE a brother's ex trope! Especially when the other brother doesn't realize just how good he has it, and in walks the man who realizes what she's worth! 👏 Owen valued and respected Lila right away! And watching her confidence grow with him in her life was one of my favorite parts of this book!

I can't wait to read more of Daphne Elliot's backlog! If they're anything like this book, I know I'll love them!

🎧Audiobook review🎧
Narrated by Aiden Snow and Mollie Stark
Duet Narration

These two did a wonderful job with this audiobook! With Aiden's commanding voice, his performance for Owen, the grumpy businessman, was PERFECT! But as commanding as he could be, Owen had no problem letting Lila take the lead many times, showing his unbelievably sweet and tender side, which Aiden did an equally as good job on! Mollie played Lila, our adorably brilliant FMC. Mollie always does an incredible job, but hearing her voice an FMC who everyone underestimates is my favorite. With a mildly snarky attitude, Mollie did such a great job playing Lila. I can't recommend this audiobook enough! I loved hearing these two in duet. And it was perfectly cast!

There’s really nothing I love more than a romance series featuring a different sibling in each book. I also love books set in Maine and rural settings, so I was the perfect audience for this story. I’m so excited to read more! Perfect for fans of Penny Reid’s Winston Brothers or Chloe Liese’s Bergman Brothers ~ or even Elsie Silver’s Chestnut Springs series.

Note: the updated covers on Kindle Unlimited are very similar to those of Lyla Sage’s Rebel Blue Ranch series, and actually, that’s another series featuring siblings!

4.5 stars rounded up - loved it!

I ADORED this story! Owen was a great MMC and I ADORED LILA so much! She was a strong, fierce, vulnerable woman I could relate to on many levels, and I loved how much she inspired Owen to see the world in a healthy way... and he had so many green flags, but allowed her that space to express herself without making any judgments. Instead, he communicated and established that he was on board with her hopes and dreams. So refreshing. Very demure. Very healthy. Very into it.

This was my first Daphne Elliot book, and I loved it. I did feel a little lost, having not read other stories. There were characters and storylines that might have been more clear if I had read some of the previous works... I'm not really sure. So, half a star off from perfect because of that and some of the pacing. Overall, I'm recommending this from the rooftops. And if/when I read her other series, I'll come back and update my rating if appropriate :)

Caught In The Axe- Daphne Elliot

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Spice 🌶️🌶️.5

We are back in Lovewell! Oh how I’ve missed this crazy town. If the Gagnons were season 1, this was a fantastic Season 2 premier featuring the Heberts. We’ve got a brand new mystery unfolding and I can’t wait for all these big broody lumberjacks to be knocked on their asses by love.

First up we’ve got CFO Owen, whom you should recognize if you read Daphne’s MomCom as Enzo’s bff and business partner. He left Lovewell at 18 for the big city and hasn’t looked back since. He’s successful in Boston and is only coming back to help his brothers sell the family business that their father ran into the ground with his illegal shenanigans. Recent graduate, Lila, is back in town working as many odd jobs as possible to save up money before she moved to New York with her best friends and starts grad school in the Fall. When Owen needs an assistant to help him sort out all the mishandled files from the business, in comes Lila. He is swept away by not only her beauty, but her brains as well. After she’d been a trophy girlfriend for Owens hotshot hockey brother for 8 years, she’s determined to make a life for herself, but what happens when she gets swept up in the older Heberts charm?

I loved seeing the cameos from the Gagnons as well as all the moms from the MomComs making an appearance. This book seriously moved me in so many ways. There was one part that I was like “Holy crap. I’ve literally never felt so seen before in my life.”

I received an ARC but all thoughts are my own.

We're returning to Lovewell, Maine and I couldn't be more excited. IMO, Daphne is the Queen of Lumberjack romances and this book was no different. This time around the series is centering around the Hebert men, starting with Owen. He's escaped the small town life, and now lives in Boston, but when the family business needs to help, he returns to Lovewell. Lila is just trying to save up enough money for grad school and when the Hebert's need help in the office to unravel the mess their father left behind, she jumps at the chance.

What follows is an age gap, brothers ex-girlfriend, small town romance. One of my favorite mini tropes is when the MMC is trying to fight his feelings/attraction for a younger FMC and it was *chef kiss* in Caught in the Axe. Plus add in the extra drama that she's his brothers ex?! I really enjoyed everything about this story. I loved seeing the Gagnon family again, and how the two dueling lumber families have come to terms with each other. The spice was top notch, the plot and flow of the story were great as well. I was hooked, and able to finish this book in a day.

If you're trying to start your Lumberjack era, this is a great place to start!

Officially entering my Lumberjack era!🪵🪓

This was my first book by Daphne Elliot and I can whole heartedly say, I really want to go back and read her others because this one was so good!!

I absolutely loved the setting of this one! It was small town cozy and I could just picture it all so well! (I need more characters like Clive 😂)

Caught in the Axe was equal parts funny and sexy with a dash of mystery which I loved! Not to mention SWOONY😍 I loved Owen!

I also found the plot of selling the family business to be unique and I thought it was so fun to read about characters who want to leave small town life and discuss not having kids in their future. A different take that I really enjoyed!

Overall this was such a cute and cozy story and I cannot wait to read more from Daphne! Especially Gus and Chloe’s story!!

Lila, daughter to a single mum, and gossiped about constantly throughout the years, she is finally living for herself and working towards fulfilling her dreams. And most of all she doesn't want a new relationship...but that changes when she meets Owen.

Owen, finds himself returning home to help his brothers in the sale of their business after his father destroyed it. He is so loyal and caring, but his family doesn't see that, the person who does see him, he is falling for and it's the person he shouldn't be falling for. Ever!

This was my first read by this author and it was enjoyable, I loved the banter and connection between the main characters. This really was an easy 5 star read for me, before I even made it beyond 50%.

But I was disappointed by the little suspense that was weaved in and nothing came of it. Also the h, I understood that she didn't want people knowing about them, but her actions were irritating.

I didn't feel like the hero had a big connection with his family(IMO, I just didn't like his mum), his relationship with his brothers was great, but it came too late in the book...the connection with his friends and their families was great even though it was just a few pages.

After that ending I'm really looking forward to August's book! I knew he had secrets but dang didn't expect that one.
