My Brother’s Best Friend Needed a Wife. Now He’s Acting Like He’ll Never Let Me Go....
Connor Davenport: Grumpy billionaire CEO, emotionally stunted genius, former undercover operative who's also a cat whisperer, is my brother's best friend and my complete opposite.
I’m a caffeine-fueled, big-hearted ER doctor. He’s all precision, control, and impossible standards.
Then he walked into my ER—bleeding, barking orders, and acting like he owned the place. I stitched him up. He asked me to dinner. I refused. That's when he told me he'd been following me for weeks.
I'm so shocked. The last thing I need is a brooding, OTT possessive, morally grey billionaire, turning my life upside down.
And then… he proposed. Not for love. For business. A marriage of convenience to unlock his billion-dollar trust fund.
My condition? He saves my hospital from shutting down.
He promised no feelings. I agreed.
But sharing his penthouse, his bed, and his last name is dangerous. One agreement. One bed. One fake relationship that feels all too real.
Every time he calls me my wife, something in his voice shifts. And every time he looks at me, my heart forgets this is temporary.
But there's one truth I haven’t told him. One secret that could destroy everything. And if Connor finds out, this pretend marriage might end with a very real heartbreak...

This book was not my cup of tea. For a number of reasons. It had potential. And there were some good parts. But overall I didn't love it. Let me break it down.
In the PR email it has a blurb that almost feels like it was meant for another book. One year, hated him prior, living in sterile penthouse etc. Sounded interesting and yet those things were not in the book. What it also didn't have was Trigger Warnings. This is more spice than real plot for the record. And I like smut but tieing up, anal, cum kinks and more was not what I expected. Not to mention stalking, the crazy dominance etc. And honestly for some may be actual triggers.
I also felt like a lot of the book was mainly inner monologues of feelings, which I don't always mind. But this a lot of tell and not showing. For instance the mom scene felt like "oh i have a plot hole cause no one knows what happened so I will plop this scene in and explain therapy."
I actually was really hoping to like this book. I haven't read many billionaire romances but I liked his philanthropic nature and love for her but I also cringed at the dominance. I loved he was biotech but then he's also MI5? Like 1 or 2 things wasn't enough. She also was rich but did it on her own? I loved she was a trauma person and she used medical jargon when she was nervous but sometimes it was just too much and distracting.
I also have come to realize I am not into insta love. Like he stalks her and falls instantly and then they hook up like first real date and is all you're mine. Um...could be sexy but add in the stalker aspect and I kinda cringed.
I forced myself not to DNF. Mainly because while I had some issues I think the story could have been good and I wanted to find out what happened. I wanted the parts of the story that was emotional, and angsty, and wondering what happens. I felt like the book was 70% spice and 30% plot and honestly I would have loved more of the plot and these characters because there were things I really did enjoy. Like the plot twist at the 70% mark. Didn't see it coming. There was a lot there to unpack and honestly more of that I would liked. And in that scene it was so raw and open and then like all of a sudden they are having sex (anal at that) and then literally when it's over has to leave for a rescue mission where his life is at stake. It's not even remotely believable. And yet if there were less of the sex stuff for the sake of having it, and more of these moments between them, their family, their jobs it would have been amazing. I liked the brothers and the family that I also would have read the other books but likely won't now.
That being said, these are my opinions and what I like. I think this author wrote well and clearly has success. There are readers who prefer this over what I like and that is great. This just wasn't my cup of tea. I applaud anyone who follows their dream and publishing a book is no small thing.
Thank you Hambright PR and L. Steele for the Arc.

I kept getting ads for this and other L Steele books and I decided to give this one a shot. It was my first book by this author. It started out promising. I liked Phoenix"s quirks and Connor started out promising. But for me I got annoyed. it was too over the top. I rolled my eyes too much. I love a good spicy book, but I found myself skimming the sex scenes. I'm not not sure why. Maybe I just didn't connect with them. Either way, I found myself just hoping to get through it.
Was there a weird plot twist at the 74% mark. Yes. Was it surprising, sure. Did I need it, not at all. I just found it weird. Especially since it took Connor less than 5 minutes to "cure" Phoenix.
On a side note: Can we agree that "machinations" does not need to be used this many times in a book.
Oh my gaawwd, i loved this so much. Once i started it, i couldn't put it down. My heart was melting, swooning, and sobbing with this story. It was emotional. The chemistry could be felt through words and pages of this. It was raw and undeniable. The wrong husband was the right one all along.
Yes, I "only" read the BETA version of the book, but I'm well aware of changes. So with this knowledge, I give my full opinion of this book.
L. Steele never disappoints 😁 And there is another thing, I should never expect any of her MMCs to be like anything. And even though I don't expect anything anymore, she shocks me again 🙈
Connor, WOW, I'm currently speechless. He is one of the MMCs that isn't really k!nk!. He also isn't as dominant as the other MMCs Laxmi has written. I wouldn't call him a softie, but he can show his feelings. SOMETIMES he is like a puppy to her 🥰 And he is no grumpy billionaire. No alphahole either. But he is OTT obsessed, possessive, and also jealous 😎 He almost beats Arthur (his grandfather) with getting himself married. The brothers are getting faster by now. They know Arthur's plans of getting all his grandsons (and son) married. This sneaky old geezer is already searching for new "victims" because he has only one grandson left 🤣 So you will meet a few single men you might already know 😉 Poor guys 🙈 But that's a thing for future books. This is Connor and Phoenix's book yet!
These two are so perfect for each other. And they are 🔥 for each other too 😎 There are 🌶️ scenes in places I never read before. I mean, Mile High Club is nothing "special" anymore (but I love it 😉) when it's on a plane, but there are other vehicles in the air 😉 Yeah, Connor is so 🔥 I understand why Phoenix can't resist him. I want a Connor myself! He is so perfect 😍
But don't think this book is an easy-going love story... NO. There are still things happening that make it difficult. For example, Phoenix secret. I didn't see this plot twist coming. Not this way. I had... No, I need to stop, I'm running out of space 😖
Thanks to the author for trusting me with a BETA 🩷
He climbs with unhurried strength, scaling the limbs of the tree like he’s done it a hundred times. The cat hisses, tail fluffed, her tiny body braced and trembling. He doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t speak. He grasps the trunk of the tree and extends a hand, slowly, palm-up. "Easy, sweetheart," he rumbles. Then, quieter, like a promise, "Good girl." His voice rakes over me like silk over gravel. It’s low. Rough. Heat-soaked. The kind of voice that curls around the base of your spine and plants roots. I shiver. Something sparks low in my belly. Something wild and feminine and completely irrational. Because… Why is my body responding to those words like they were meant for me?
There were elements that I absolutely loved - the FMC's career as an ER Doctor was interesting, the portrayal of workplace stress, the supporting cast, and the hero's unwavering support were highlights. However, I felt like this book didn't quite deliver on the romantic connection. While the spicy scenes were enjoyable, the romance felt underdeveloped, relying too much on the characters telling the reader they were in love rather than showing it. The frequent "I love yous" in their inner monologues felt unearned, especially so early in their relationship.
Very disjointed characters/plot and terrible pacing made this a terrible read.
Pacing - WAY way too much inner monologue and description of feelings between small amounts of dialog made each scene and conversation last FOREVER. I found myself skimming multiple times because the author just went on and on and on.
Instalove done wrong - I don't mind insta-love/lust but this was over the top. The scene when the FMC first sees the MMC - I actually went back to the synopsis to see if I accidentally downloaded a fantasy. The description of the way he climbed a tree gave super hero or high fae vibes and she reacted like she just met her fated mate.
Thoughts and feelings never matched actions - One minute she's rightfully offended at something he said or did (like stalking her) and the next it's like nbd. He said sorry *swoon* One scene he's planning to court her and a few pages later he's telling her you belong to me (and she agrees) and you don't deserve my 🍆 and I'm gong to punish her for making me want you... and then we're right back to romantic courting and how do i make her trust me. And while that seems like a good time, it really wasn't
I found it hilarious that while stalking, the MMC seemed to miss a VERY important detail about her life and kept reading just bc I was waiting for that reveal but gave up and DNF'd about 30% in.
I don't understand all of the high ratings. I would not recommend.
This one hit a lot of my favorite tropes, brother’s best friend, grumpy billionaire, sunshine heroine, marriage of convenience, and of course… one bed. It definitely delivered on the fun factor, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Connor and Phoenix. He’s broody and obsessive in that OTT billionaire way, and she’s smart, driven, and impossible not to root for.
The story had some over-the-top moments (which is kind of the point), but it also mixed in heart with the family and hospital storyline. I liked seeing how their fake arrangement turned into something more real.
Overall, it’s a solid romance with plenty of tension and banter. If you’re in the mood for a billionaire brother’s best friend romance packed with tropes, this one’s worth picking up. Thanks to Hambright PR for the gifted ARC
This is the 6th book in the Davenports series and it is by far my favorite book. Connor Davenport whew. I love the way he was patient with phoenix. And he took his time getting to know her.
I was sooo excited to get Connor and Phoenix story! This is brothers best friend/secret bodyguard/marriage of convenience. These two had one heck of a whirlwind AND I haven’t had my heart racing from one of L. Steeles books like I did this one in a long time! And it wasn’t just for the angst, I was on the edge of my seat scared what was to come next.
Connor Davenport is not only. CEO billionaire but he is also an undercover specialist. He is asked by his best friend to take on a mission of checking in on his little sister Phoenix Hamilton. He watches her and takes his reporting and documentation very seriously. Quickly he realizes this high functioning talented committed doctor is not living her life, and is keeping others at arms length away. He soon finds himself wanting to be the ONLY one to protect her, but is he a good enough man to do it?!
Phoenix is a hard working doctor and she gives her all every single day. She is determined to help and save as many lives as she can, and knowing that her hospital is having funding issues put her in a frustrating predicament. She wants to help not only the patients that need the hospital to stay open but also her fellow coworkers. She is given an impossible choice when tall dark handsome crashes into her ER for the second time. Can she keep her heart safe from being destroyed again? She isn’t looking for love, she has too many secrets that no one can get close to her, but her need to help those she can and this instant pull to this man may just over ride all her logical brain functions.
Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat needing to know what is going to happen next. And when both these two have to face their decisions, coming out on the other side not in full pieces, but maybe just maybe each other have their missing pieces ♥️
This book started very slow and is way to long. I’m not a fan of Phoenix as she is a pushover. I would think a doctor who put herself through medical school would be a strong independent person. After she finds out Conner has been “stalking” her for a month, for some odd reason she becomes putty in his hands! Yet she knows nothing about him. It was nothing but “bedroom scenes”. It became too much that I just started skipping sections until I could find some part of a story. I’m still trying to figure out what this book was about.
The whole series is about curvy women, billionaire men and a marriage of convenience. There is nothing unique about it. I keep reading the next book in the series hoping that the plot will be different.
Honestly, this book wasn't for me. There was some moments I enjoyed but over all, I wasn't feeling it. After reading the book I went back and looked at my rating for the books in this series, and it seems I haven't really liked any of them. I don't know why I keep reading them. The chemistry was off for me, plus his weird obsession that I think was supposed to be morally grey but wasn't.
Thank you to L. Steele and Hambright PR for the ARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.
WOW! I rarely read billionaire romances, but The Wrong Husband made me a believer—and now I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! Connor is the epitome of a powerful man who hides his feelings, while Phoenix is a nerdy, caring ER doctor. Their worlds collide when Connor shows up in her ER bleeding and demanding attention, eventually confessing that he’s been watching her for weeks. Believing the only way to protect them both is through marriage, he proposes—launching a marriage of convenience that tests whether love can grow from obligation.
The chemistry between Connor and Phoenix is explosive and had me reading late into the night! Every time Phoenix disrupts Connor’s control or he challenges her chaos, their attraction only intensifies. As the story unfolds, their emotional bond and sexual tension deepen, while their differences both challenge and complete each other.
L. Steele captivates with dimensional characters and a world rich in tension, intrigue, and emotion. The Wrong Husband is a must-read if you enjoy romance with steam, heart, and unforgettable characters.
Oh, the things that brew between Dr. Phoenix (Phe) Hamilton and Connor Davenport. For good, bad, or steamy, I'm along for the ride!
She needs to figure out a way to slow down and address the things in her life that she's been avoiding for months and years. He is being pushed into a corner, and like all the other Davenports, needs to marry to do what he desires with his inheritance. Thus, the marriage of convenience plot takes form.
Tall. Commanding. He hijacks my attention like he’s a force of nature. -- Phoenix Hamilton
They are a bit of an odd couple, but one that I like together. I like that he makes an effort to woo her after his initial, bumbled attempt at a marriage of convenience proposal. I like the ways they challenge each other and show their support.
The Drew storyline gets a little... weird. I honestly think the story could've done without the extra special twist. It is a different perspective, but it didn't seem to completely fit in with the rest of the story.
I received an author's copy of the audio book. I really like the narrators, Mackenzie Cartwright and Shane East. It's made even better because they're in duet! 😍 🎧❤️🎧
This was the sixth book in the Davenport series, and I found it to be a cute and fun read. I have not read the other books in the series, but it was easy to pick this book up and fall in love with the main characters.
This story follows Phoenix and Connor. Connor is a CEO billionaire and a former undercover operative. When he is asked by his best friend to keep tabs on his little sister, he takes the job because he owes him a favor. However, did Connor get more than he bargained for when he decided to take on this job?
This book had some of my favorite tropes: brothers' best friend, opposites attract, grumpy sunshine, marriage of convenience, one bed, and found family. I had a fun time reading this story and it was a good palette cleanser between my fantasy reads.
L. Steele’s The Wrong Husband is a captivating and thrilling ride that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! This book is a masterclass in romantic suspense, blending heart-pounding tension with a deeply emotional storyline that had me completely invested in the characters’ journeys. The plot twists were sooo good, and just when I thought I had it all figured out!)
The chemistry between heroes is electric, filled with passion and complexity that made their relationship feel incredibly real. I loved how the characters were well-developed, each with their own struggles, making their growth throughout the story all the more satisfying. And I’m a complete goner for this type of enemies to lovers! Steele’s writing is engaging and immersive, drawing readers into a world filled with intrigue and emotion. The pacing is perfect, balancing moments of tension with heartfelt scenes.
The Wrong Husband is an absolute must-read for anyone who loves a romance that’s layered with suspense and emotional depth. L. Steele has crafted a stunning novel that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Highly recommended for fans of gripping love stories!
I only made it to 11% before quitting. I did not care for the stalker or insta-love/lust vibes at all. Maybe if I would have made it further, I would have learned why he was stalking his friend’s sister, but I couldn’t get into the book enough to care.
✨ARC REVIEW✨ ⭐️: 3.5/5 (rounded up to 4⭐️ on Goodreads) 📅: August 19, 2025
Tropes: ❤️ Brother’s Best Friend ❤️ Marriage of Convenience ❤️ Fake Relationship That Feels Too Real ❤️ OTT Protective Billionaire ❤️ Curvy Heroine ❤️ “My Wife” ❤️ Grumpy x Sunshine
This book had so many of my favorite tropes, and Connor Davenport himself was everything I wanted in a morally-grey, obsessive MMC. He’s a billionaire CEO, ex-undercover operative, cat whisperer (yes, really) who is completely gone for Phoenix. The man buys her candles because she sniffed them once, memorizes her every detail, and even admits to being a stalker…and somehow makes it swoony. His notes, his little surprises, the way he calls her “my wife” ugh, I ate it up.
Phoenix had her moments, she’s sunshiney, smart, and big-hearted, but I struggled with her at times. She was far too forgiving in her past relationship, and she didn’t always appreciate Connor the way he deserved. The spice was plentiful, but the plot sometimes took a backseat, and then that whole Drew twist at the end? It just left me blinking at my Kindle like… huh?
That said, I loved seeing cameos from other characters (Arthur and Skylar were highlights), and the brother’s-best-friend tension kept me hooked. Connor carried this book for me, and while it wasn’t a perfect read, it had enough banter, obsession, and swoon-worthy moments to keep me turning pages.
If you love obsessive heroes, fake marriages that feel way too real, and over-the-top protective MMCs, you’ll still find plenty to enjoy here. And honestly? I can’t wait for Brody’s book next.
This was my first book by L Steele and I really enjoyed the way she tells her stories. Since this was my first book, I think it is important to say that I didn’t feel incredibly lost with the characters having not read any others from the series. 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔: Connor & Phoenix Connor wasn’t what I was expecting but loved him for who he was. He wasn’t this dominant grumpy man, but instead was a very obsessive, very sweet man who fell hard for Phoenix, pretty much before he even talked to her. Connor makes a proposal to Phoenix for them to get married, It will help him get his trust fund, and he can help her save the hospital she works at. What starts as a marriage of convenience quickly turns into so much more when they admit their feelings for each other. And the 🌶️ scenes get extra 🌶️ and had me fanning myself!
This was a duet narration by Shane East and Mackenzie Cartwright and they sounded absolutely amazing together. Both of the narrators embodied their characters so well. Shane and Mackenzie’s pacing, tone, and character voices were spot on to make this a very easy and enjoyable listen.
Connor and Phoenix’s story is here!!! They are complete opposites in every way but they have this chemistry and connection and that they can’t ignore. He is brooding and protective and she is so smart and strong and I loved them together. Ok yes, he was a little obsessed and OTT but he was also very caring.
There is also one twist in particular I never saw coming!! Arthur’s continued meddling and marriage requirements certainly frustrate his family…maybe it was all one big plan? Who knows?

Arc review For a honest review in my own words on a book I read. Wow fantastic brilliantly written.Conner Davenport is a man every women would love to have but he finds that phoenix Hamilton has broken everyone of his rules and can't stay away. This story has some twist and turns but will have you so drawn in that you will not help it. The chemistry and devotion and understanding just captures my heart
Absolutely loved this story ❤️! Started out with a stalker vibe, which wasn't it at all, was protective brotherish, and dealing with his family. Then not knowing she was trying not to hurt ex's feelings for how she broke off relationship, she just let that hang on and on! But then meeting Connor, whirlwind of feelings, get on this merry go round, won't see all the twists and turns coming in this story, expect the unexpected! Loved, loved it!
His Fever Connor and Phe, what else needs to be said? L Steele has created another masterpiece of love, passion, compassion and heart. With a heavy sprinkling of hot, steamy desire! It all started with a favor to a friend but once he saw her, truly saw her; that was all it took.
This is the first time I’ve written a review on a book here. Why the hell is her womb reacting to him? Why is it so fast? Why are all of the sex scenes and her lines so quirky? I dislike this writing style and had to DNR. I’m sure someone else would like this but I do not. Sorry!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I can’t even rate this book. I understand that the story has to be sexy , erotic even but man!
“Sweat breaks out on my brow. Moisture springs to life between my legs. I squeeze my thighs, not that it has any effect on the yawning emptiness I’m suddenly aware of between them.” This sentence is at the beginning of the book when phoenix Looks at this guy in the street ….IN THE STREET!
Where is the building up.. the conversation .. well .. not for me . Sorry
