I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.
It was so fun to reunite with Lola, Gael, Nix, and Walt soon after the events of the first book. I love the dynamics between this group, and one thing I have to stay stuck out to me was Lola and Nix’s relationship. They were sometimes at odds in the first book, especially before Lola came forward with her secret, but in this book Lola defends Nix from bullying and they are good friends. I loved to see that. Books where two girls are friends instead of enemies is so refreshing and I loved their characters all the more for it. I also noted this as I was reading, but boy do I love creepy carnivals and this was exactly what we got. As a mysterious carnival roles into town, people begin to change and Lola knows something is up. Now, instead of vampires, we have the yin to their yang… werewolves! I love how the creepy dark fantasy element is woven into this story, amidst the mystery of the carnival and those who run it. The mirrors and doppelgängers were also such a creepy tie in! Now that Lola is human instead of vampire, she’s not as durable and invincible as she once was. I liked the inclusion of this because I actually felt like she was having a real adjustment to her new reality. Her friends are also quite supportive. So it made things feel more real with the threats they faced, because this time, Lola didn’t have vampire powers on her side!
Another thing I liked about this sequel was that, while it was nice to have read the first book, you don’t have to. You can still get an idea of what Lola went through before and her history with her new group of friends. I would probably recommend reading it in order just for the experience, but the fact that you don’t have to makes it easier for teen readers who either might forget parts of the before plot or simply haven’t read the first book. I also enjoyed how this book ends with the fact that there is definitely a third book in the series, and more dark magic to uncover.
This book, and so far this series, is a really great entry for teens who likes vampires, werewolves, and other sorts of magical beings, or simply just enjoy a good and twisted ride with a group of friends who are all likable. It’s quick to read and easy to understand, but that doesn’t mean it is void of feeling or depth. All the characters feel unique, from Lola to Gael to Nix and Walt. And the new characters introduced in this book have their own pasts, motivations, and more. It makes for an easy read but one that is memorable at the same time. And hard to turn away from! By the last half of the book I was totally engrossed and I think I spent almost the whole day finishing it. Plus, with how this book ended, I am dying to read the next one. Cliffhangers might be unpopular to some but this one had me hooked and read to keep reading.
There are a few tropes here and there that gave me Twilight feels, which I don’t think are totally necessary in the book (I think Lola doesn’t need the push pull of anyone, Gael or Chann alike, but I guess I was glad she said she was taking time to figure out being human first), however, there could be some teenagers that really like that.
This series is the kind that will appeal to teens mostly but adults too. I know it appeals to me! It’s neatly YA and let’s itself be that way, and I appreciate that in series because it feels very accessible for all sorts of readers. I’ve enjoyed my time with both of the books so far and I’m very excited to keep reading the series - and this author!
