This instalment is a quietly compelling entry in the Esther and Jack Enright mystery series, continuing David Field’s strength for character-led crime rooted in the past. Esther’s sharp instincts and Jack’s steadier, more reflective approach make for a well-balanced investigative pairing, particularly as the case forces both of them to confront old grudges and long-simmering resentments. Not forgetting the Jack's ever present Uncle Percy, didn't he retire?! Clearly not, I knew he couldn't be totally left out!
As with earlier books in the series, the pacing is deliberate rather than twist-heavy, allowing the emotional fallout of long-buried secrets to drive the tension. David Field is less interested in spectacle than in consequence, and the history built up around Esther and Jack adds real depth to the mystery. A thoughtful, succinct and understated crime novel, that I, as someone heavily invested in the Enrights’ ongoing story, relished. Looking forward to book 11.
