The Enright family are caught up in another tricky case! Perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, Andrew Taylor and Laura Shepherd-Robinson.

Life is good … until it isn’t…

London, 1899

Jack and Esther Enright, with their four children in tow, have recently moved to a comfortable new home. Esther has settled into her dream job as headmistress of the local private school, owned by her mentor Emily Allsop.

But things are not going so well for Jack. Though he does not mind the commute to his high-ranking desk job at New Scotland Yard, he is disturbed by the level of recent resignations by uniformed constables in the East End.

Though the police force has always been used to tackling crime in the more impoverished parts of London, a recent influx of Russian immigrants has led to gang warfare and vigilante justice, which is proving impossible to control.

And when Esther’s school is vandalised with a disturbing message, Jack finds his detective skills are needed closer to home as well.

Things escalate when one of the young pupils is abducted and Jack needs all the help he can get in finding the perpetrator before it is too late.

Can Jack and Esther solve another case together? Will they rescue the child in time?

Or will the unrest in London prove too much for even Jack to handle…?

THE LONG DELAYED REVENGE is the tenth crime thriller in an exciting historical series, the Esther and Jack Enright Mysteries, a traditional British detective series set in Victorian London and packed full of suspense.

Always excited to get my hands on another book in this series by David Field, I carved out some time to delve in. Jack and Esther Enright are back when a bout of vandalism creates havoc and the local primary school, leaving them ready to act. Rumours of a ghost haunting the premises are added to a child abduction, forcing the Met to become involved. When the primary suspect’s past becomes a question, Jack will have to step in to clear the air. David Field delivers another winner with this novel!

Jack and Esther Enright have made quite the home for their four children. It’s 1899 and London is growing in all directions. Esther has finally landed her dream job as a teacher and deputy headmistress of a local primary school, under the tutelage of Emily Allsop.

While Esther is doing well, Jack has struggled with his new position within New Scotland Yard. The slew of resignations has made every day trying and keeps him from making any progress. Added to that, his uncle, Percy Enright, had retired and left a gaping hole in the detective ranks.

When the primary school is hit by a barrage of vandalism, whispers of a ghost haunting the grounds surrounds the parent circles. Emily and Esther try to quell them, only to be met by the shocking discovery that a young pupil had gone missing. The prime suspect tries to deflect their involvement, but Jack and his Percy try to get answers. Trouble is, the suspect does not seem to really exist. While they battle this, the Enright men find that a handful of powerful gangs are pulling the strings in the criminal sphere. David Field creates a wonderful story that flows with ease and keeps the reader enthralled!

David Field has done well creating and sustaining this series over the years. His narrative always flows well and is filled with action to keep the reader engaged. His characters come to life and series fans will be able to see the progression of the Enrights. There is a true Victorian flavour to the characters, which serves as a great addition to the reading experience. Strong plot points and a few surprises balance well with the twists that Field incorporates. I have long been a fan of this series and remain so for whatever David Field has to offer.

Kudos Mr. Field, for another stellar Victorian mystery!

This instalment is a quietly compelling entry in the Esther and Jack Enright mystery series, continuing David Field’s strength for character-led crime rooted in the past. Esther’s sharp instincts and Jack’s steadier, more reflective approach make for a well-balanced investigative pairing, particularly as the case forces both of them to confront old grudges and long-simmering resentments. Not forgetting the Jack's ever present Uncle Percy, didn't he retire?! Clearly not, I knew he couldn't be totally left out!
As with earlier books in the series, the pacing is deliberate rather than twist-heavy, allowing the emotional fallout of long-buried secrets to drive the tension. David Field is less interested in spectacle than in consequence, and the history built up around Esther and Jack adds real depth to the mystery. A thoughtful, succinct and understated crime novel, that I, as someone heavily invested in the Enrights’ ongoing story, relished. Looking forward to book 11.

I really enjoy the characters and the story lines. It is also interesting to learn the relevant history of the time the story are set. Can't wait for the next one.
