Manchester 2017: Cain Bell thinks he has finally found happiness with April Sands, a celebrated chef and the love of his life. But on the night he proposes, April reveals a shocking secret: the man who confessed to killing Cain’s daughter in a hit-and-run accident two decades ago was not the real driver. As Cain seeks answers, he discovers April harbours many more dark secrets — one of them ties her to the very tragedy that has haunted him for years. Caught between seeking vengeance and turning the other cheek, Cain must navigate the blurred lines between right and wrong in pursuit of a truth that will either give him renewal and redemption or finally destroy him?
Andrew J Field lives with Catherine by the sea, next to the docks, near three bridges (but not that one), close to the border. He previously lived in Manchester. Armed with an MA from Manchester University, he writes post-modern ironic noirish thrillers. A member of the Society of Authors, Andrew likes coffee, dry white wine and scoffing fish and chips overlooking the Tweed estuary.
ALL DOWN THE LINE by Andrew Field is a new crime fiction/mystery book by a new to me author. The story is set in Manchester and pits a grieving protagonist against an organized crime family in a fast-paced, tightly plotted standalone mystery.
Cain Bell lost his 10-year-old daughter in a hit and run on the streets of Manchester. While the driver did not stop at the scene, a man does confess to the crime before he dies of prostate cancer. The accident destroys Cain’s marriage and he lives in a fast paced limbo until he meets April.
Fast forward twenty years and Cain proposes to April in their restaurant, Red Manisfesto. April says yes, but she tells Cain she has a secret that must be revealed first about the death of his daughter, but before she can tell her secret, the two are attacked on their way home from the restaurant. April ends up in a coma and is not expected to live.
To discover April’s secret, Cain begins to ask questions that have been covered up for many years. Each discovery only leads to more danger as Cain finds himself pitted against the most feared crime boss in Manchester and his terrifying family.
This gritty crime fiction/mystery story has a crew of characters that are not very likable, but they are interesting. I did feel for Cain and his losses and I was surprised by his determination to find the truth even as he was completely out of his league. Mr. Field has written an intricate plot that has plenty of twists that lead to a surprising and satisfying climax.
This is a fast-paced gritty crime fiction/mystery with plenty of secrets, villains and violence.

This was a stark, gritty exploration of loss, the search for truth, revenge and the lengths that people can be driven by in the hunt or the latter two. Set against the backdrop of Manchester and filled with Manchurian landmarks and personality that solidly grounded the narrative and characters in reality and gave an added sense of character to the entire book. All Down the Line is tightly plotted and very well written, and you can’t help but be pulled into the narrative from the very beginning because Field knows just how to catch your attention and pull you not just into the pages, but into the very lives of a cast of very real characters. For me, the characters were what really sold me on this book, especially Cain, as Field did an excellent job of bringing emotion to this character, and we felt his loss – old and renewed, his pain and confusion and the growing need for answers and worse, and in such a way that you can’t help but root for him. The cast of characters around him were all varied and well-developed, and while many of them weren’t likeable, they were wonderfully real and added to the very real sense of danger and suspense that permeated through the book. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me on my toes, and often they caught me by surprise which was fantastic, and it was a real rollercoaster of a read that didn’t shy away from either the violence or the more emotional side of what the characters were going through. I also particularly liked that the ending didn’t tie up all the ends, or completely redeem the situation, because it perfectly matched the nature of the book, and felt so much more realistic, especially after following a character like Cain whose decisions were coloured by everything that had happened, and by being on the edge of having little to lose. It was a natural, realistic finale with a solid and highly satisfying emotional impact. An excellent new crime novel, perfect for anyone who loves crime fiction, has a connection to Manchester as the city lives and breathes through this book, and certainly an author I will be keeping an eye on.
All Down the Line by Andrew Field is a book that had me from the start. A crime thriller that is set in Manchester it grabbed me immediately. Cain Bell finds himself up against an organised crime family, when all he wants is the truth. Cain's 10 year old daughter lost her life in a hit and run. The driver didn't stop at the scene but later came forward to confess, just before he passes away from prostrate cancer. This event causes Cains marriage to disintergrate. He spends his life lost, until he meets April. Twenty years later, Cain asks April to marry him one evening in their joint venture, Red Manifesto, a restaurant that they are successfully running in Manchester. April accepts but tells him she needs to disclose something she knows about his daughters death all them years ago. Before she has a chance to tell him, they are attacked on the canal path on the way home. April is severely injured, in a coma and not even expected to come around. Cain begins his quest to find out the information April was unable to tell him. This means digging up old dirt and upsetting people he would never imagine he would. The further he digs the more dangerous it becomes. He is digging up secrets that the most feared crime family in Manchester don't want uncovering anytime soon. As I have already said I was there with Cain straight away. I really felt for him, his wife-to-be in a coma, the surprises that keep on surprising. He didn't know whether he was coming or going half the time. The majority of the characters aren't really likable but I was rooting for Cain all the way. I enjoyed the setting of the story, the familiar places and streets rolling out of the pages kept me well connected as I could picture them. A gritty, well written story with twists that keep you guessing and if you like a gang crime story with the violence or threat of it this is a good read too. Thanks to Damp Pebbles Blog Tours and Andrew Field for the copy of the book for my review today.
This is one of those novels that can put you off finishing if you struggle with the writing style. To me, Field has a very clipped and erratic writing style, which I found difficult to get into, as it felt a bit all over the place. There are a lot of different characters to get to know, and occasionally I found myself unsure as to who was actually speaking.
The characters themselves were very well developed. I felt like I knew exactly the type of people they were, especially through the way they spoke. The Mancunian accent was prominent throughout. I don’t think we were supposed to like any of the characters besides Cain, which was definitely how I felt.
I’m not very familiar with Manchester myself as I’ve only visited a couple of times when I was younger, however, the way it is described is very vivid and I’m sure if you were more familiar with the area, it would be a great ode to the city.
I felt so incredibly sorry for Cain. He had been through so much already after losing his daughter, to then potentially losing his soon-to-be wife on the night of their engagement. And to top it off, there was a huge secret she was keeping from him that she was about to tell him before she went into a coma that he was desperate to find out, as it related to his daughter.
Once I’d gotten into the rhythm of Field’s writing, the storyline starting opening up and became increasingly interesting, along with some twists and turns that I did not expect! However, I did figure out who really killed his daughter quite near the beginning of the novel, as that seemed to be where it was heading.
Overall, I enjoyed the storyline and the ending of the novel, however, I did struggle with the writing, and found myself not necessarily looking forward to reading it because of this.
All Down the Line by Andrew Field is a non-stop thriller that keeps you on your toes. I smashed through this book in about three days – I couldn’t put the book down! Andrew Field has captured the essence of Manchester in his words – he’s got the setting and the characters’ personalities down to a t. Field has created an array of colourful characters inhabiting an extremely accurate version of Manchester. The Manchester accent shines through in Field’s writing and his crazily accurate description of places in Manchester transports you to the streets of this northern power. I loved this book, it’s one that I’ll come back to again and again and see if I can spot anything new. Field’s writing is captivating and thrilling, it really draws you in. You’ll like All Down the Line if you enjoyed things like Sherlock, the Bodyguard, etc.
Another great book from the team at Boomslang Books! The whole journey was so intense, with questions constantly running through your mind from start to finish – just what I love from a book of this genre!
Field is a brilliant author who effortlessly captures his audience and pulls them into the lives of some very real characters. We’re dragged into the fast-paced life of Cain as he navigates his way through love, loss, confusion and danger, seeking answers to his traumatic life. I loved the excitement and the unexpected twists, even the characters you think you know well may surprise you. The intense emotion we share with Cain is just the icing on the cake! A great book which I’d definitely recommend.
When a grieving man searches for answers to a long-buried secret involving his daughter’s death, his life is threatened by a violent crime family.
At first, I grappled with the presentation of the first chapter trying to grasp the author’s clipped writing style; but then a well-plotted story emerges. The characters are believable and surprising, and the intrigue builds as more unexpected twists and turns are added throughout an intense and dangerous search for the truth. I couldn’t stop reading because I had to know how everything would work out.
I recommend this gripping crime thriller filled with a rollercoaster of emotions and plot twists.
Thank you to Mr. Fields for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
Andrew Field is a new author for me. I enjoyed the fast paced storyline and the characters were great too. This suspenseful read, has loss, danger, a crime family, revenge and so much more. This gripping book kept me entertained and turning the pages trying to figure out what would happen next. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Cain Bell is living the life, he’s in Love with the most beautiful woman in the world, he’s owner of a successful and very exclusive restaurant and he’s getting married. But in the background Cain is not happy as the death of his 10 year old daughter - a hit and run victim haunts him.
Whilst he thought he had closure for her death - the driver having handed himself in before his own Death, that closure is suddenly ripped open when Fiancé, April suggests that she knows more about his daughters death than meets the eye... then April is struck down by Thugs, leaving Cain with questions needing answers..
This Dark, powerful and well plotted Noir Thriller, set in Manchester, then rips into a ferociously paced story of Gangsters, Family, Money and Cover ups.
Which lots of characters that aren’t particularly pleasant, this is an intriguing tale as you try to guess the truth and who is really on Cain’s side as he attempts to untangle the truth about his daughter’s death.
It’s very decent British Noir, I enjoyed the Manchester Location and read the whole book in a couple of hour sittings, such was my interest in getting to the bottom of this one, and as I found the pacing, writing and chapter length all extremely inviting.
Overall this a cracking read and I’d like to thank Boomslang Books for my copy in return for an unbiased review
For a short book of only 228 pages, the author has done well to create a story that doesn’t feel rushed or doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything. It comes with twists, some we expected, some we didn’t. I can’t say I felt drawn in to any the characters, if any it would have been the daughter Summer with her some sort of innocence in this story.
I found it hard to relate to the fact that Cain, still seen and spoke to his daughter, even though 20 years after his death had passed but I guess that can be a part of grief and we don’t truly get over the death of someone we loved. I do think he should have reached out to a professional to get some help, but that wasn’t the point of this story. It was to get justice and find out the truth about his daughters death.
It was an enjoyable read, it didn’t have be gripped the whole way through but it was a story that I enjoyed. One point I would probably improve on was the punctuation in this book but that could be down to the fact this was a gifted copy, therefore possibly is not the end published product.
Thank you to Boomslang Books for reaching out and asking me to review this book. I think this would have been good as a larger novel, to really get to know the characters more. To find out more about April before her attack from her words, more about Nick the boxer, he was another character that stood out for me.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review. My views are entirely my own. I read somewhere in the first few days of this year that you have to read a hard book. I think I just did. The clipped sentences left me hanging. I struggled to get into the storyline because of this. Characters were introduced in quick successions that made it even harder. By 10 percent I stopped. I simply don't have the time to dissect each sentence or paragraph to get into the story or to enjoy it. Not sure if I would recommend it, but will not stop someone from reading it either. Some books are for some readers, some are for others. This book was not my cup of tea. Thanks for the read anyway.
All Down The Line is a compelling crime thriller that explores the lengths a father will go to in order to uncover the truth about the death of his daughter. It’s a dark and gritty thriller that explores loss, secrets, revenge and how the one you love most is capable of hurting you the most. There’s so much more packed into this 200 page novel and the suspense will have you on the edge of your seat.
The story centres around Cain Bell and the death of his ten-year-old daughter who was killed in a hit-and-run twenty years ago. He thought he had closure when a man confessed that he was driving the car just before he died, however, his fiancée, April, claims that the driver was lying. Before she can reveal anything further, the two are attacked and she ends up in hospital in a coma. All of Cain’s suffering is brought to the surface again and it’s clear that he won’t rest until he finds out who really killed his daughter, even if it means having to confront Manchester’s most ruthless gangster.
I absolutely loved how this story was set in Manchester. I so rarely read a book where I’ve visited or stayed in that particular setting, so it was nice to be able to read a book about a city that I’m familiar with. I could picture everything so clearly and became very immersed in the story because of it.
One thing I look for in a story is compelling characters and Andrew Field has definitely created a very real character in All Down The Line. Cain is a likeable character and the wave of emotions he experiences throughout is definitely something we can all relate to. I really felt for him as, just when he finally thought he was happy and settled, everything is brutally snatched away from him. As well as having to deal with a fresh wave of grief and anger over the tragic death of his daughter, he discovers that his wife is not the woman he thought she was. Cain’s emotions felt very palpable throughout; you could feel his confusion and anger over what happened, and his increasing need for answers. He’s told time and time again that the path he’s on is a dangerous one and he’d be better off just leaving Manchester behind, however, he refuses to back down and his steely determination to find answers is what propels the story forward.
I became completely caught up in Cain’s grief and the death of his daughter. There were so many questions running through my mind, especially about April and who she really is. There was also a lot of uncertainty about what was going to happen to Cain since each secret he uncovers causes him to become entangled with a dangerous crime family and there’s some secrets they want to stay buried. I was really rooting for him to get the closure he deserves.
Field is a new author to me and he certainly didn’t disappoint. There’s plenty of twists and turns throughout to keep you on your toes and I soon found myself racing towards the end. I highly recommend All Down The Line for crime fiction fans!
A fascinating “what if” as an everyday, normal guy finds himself tussling with the local mob. This is a gripping read, after a bit of a slow start, and you will find the characters and their relationships fascinating as they develop.
