When Jock McLock sees something bright flash across the night sky, he's certain an alien spacecraft landed in Orion Field on the other side of town. In true spy fashion, he goes to investigate. Strange noises come from the deserted factory nearby and there are scorch marks on the ground, all indicating an alien crash site. After Jock locates a hole in the fence, he sneaks through to get a better look. Spooked by the sight of silver-suited beings with waving tentacles on their heads, he tries to escape, only to get caught on the fence wire. He is saved by Doctor Awaja, a scientist who once worked at the factory, and they flee the area. Doctor Awaja informs Jock of an illegal drug lab operating inside the factory and that he should stay away for his own safety. Jock does not heed the warning and decides to return to take a photo, convinced there are aliens inside the factory and not criminals. When his flash goes off, he's spotted and he runs for his life. Hot on his heels is the Black Mamba Gang, as well as three bright lights that appear out of nowhere to help him escape. Could they be aliens after all?

A really good read for all ages. Yes it did have the feeling of the Hardy Boys but it is a mystery wrapped in SF that is well written, clean and inoffensive. A light falling to the ground has him thinking of spaceships crashing. His two BFF's agree and more it all seems to center on an abandoned pharmaceutical factory, a fence that suddenly gets repaired and illnesses that have hit their small town. Is it aliens? A disgraced scientist, a nosy parker, a mad dash and capture. Will he find out what's been happening or is it curtains for him?
It’s safe to say Jock McLock is a plucky young man. Quite a typical 12-year-old in many ways, all the follies of youth, but with good intentions. Full of curiosity, sure that aliens have landed, he seeks answers. What is the mysterious bite on his teacher’s hand that makes him act differently? Why is Liam’s brother mysteriously ill? It seems more and more certain that the aliens have a hand in strange occurrences around town. Not to mention the deserted factory. Just what is going on there? It’s all too much for 12-year-old boy’s sense of adventure. With so many questions left unanswered, Jock’s determination to find out the truth sees him put his life in danger. Will it all work out? Will the aliens really appear and deal with the dodgy, dishonest people at the old factory? With twists and turns, suspenseful moments and good old-fashioned mystery, Elizabeth Klein weaves a fantastic Middle-Grade story. An edge-of-seat-adventure all the way. Well recommended for the young adventure-seeking reader in your life.
