Britannia bleeds.
The Romans have gone, the old gods are fading, and war rages on every border. Saxons flood the shores, and with Uther Pendragon's death, the realm teeters on the edge of ruin.
In a hidden valley, two children come of age. Arthur is quiet, noble, marked by fate. Morgan is fierce, brilliant, and dangerous in ways she doesn't yet understand. Though raised as kin, something far stronger binds them—something that burns as hot as Beltane fire.
Then Merlyn arrives, and everything changes.
Arthur is declared the prophesied king. Morgan is the wild card no one foresaw.
Thrust into a court rife with ambition and treachery, Morgan must choose: claim a power that could shatter Arthur's destiny—or sacrifice everything to protect him.
From Avalon's sacred isle to battlefields drenched in blood, the fate of kingdoms—and the truth of a legend—rests in the hands of a woman history will try to erase.

Britannia is divided. Saxons nip at the tribes and borders. Uther Pendragon defends the West. Upon his death, the fate of Britannia is threatened.
Deep within a forested valley, two young foster children come of age. Arthur - quiet, noble, unknowingly the heir to Uther - and Morgan - fierce, brilliant and daughter of a great and powerful priestess. Raised together as siblings but deeper feelings develop and grow as they come of age.
The Archdruid Merlyn arrives one day and throws all their carefully laid plans into the wind.
Arthur is the prophesied High King of Britannia, foretold to unite the tribes and kingdoms under one banner and crown.
Morgan is the wild card fate never saw coming.
In a realm ruled by swords and spells, Morgan must decide where her heart lies. The good of Britannia, or the growing darkness within.
This was a brilliant book. I love the legends of King Arthur and the round table but I’ve never once read a book from Morgana’s POV! There was a lot of tension and political strife and warfare. It was just so interesting to read this alternative take on the legend. Looking forward to the sequels due out and the end of this year and in the first quarter of next year!
I wasn't expecting to like this book. So far away from Shanis's other work and I was right, I didn't like it - Instead i loved it!!! Can't wait for the 2nd book - suspense, drama, old ways, magic. Breathtaking! Every character came alive for me. Morgan - my new heroine!
The Mists of Avalon (shame about the author) has been in my all time favourite rads for many years. The story of Arthur has been interpreted in many ways, but I have always loved the story from the female point of view. This retelling focuses on the early years of Arthur and Morgan. They are brought up by loving foster parents and as they get older the bond between them grows stronger. On Beltane Eve, just as the pair plan to go off together the Arch Druid appears. He tells them that Arthur is the son of Uther Pendragon. Uther is dead and now Arthur must take up his destiny. Morgan knows that her mother was one of the priestesses of Avalon. There is also the suspicion that she is also Uther's daughter.
I enjoyed the background of the times they were living in. The characters were well crafted and there were a lot of questionds that may be answered in later books- or not! Definitely a five star read. Waiting till October for the next installment is hard, but it's already preordered!
I bought this on audible because it had such good reviews and tried so hard to keep listening to see what everyone else was seeing, but I couldn't get past Morgana's constant whining so I didn't even see Arthur become king. Arthur and Morgana are brought up together as brother and sister, but then decide they're more than that which is weird to start with, but then when they find out they actually MIGHT BE brother and sister by blood, she's still trying to make it ok and all whiney that Arthur pulls away from her. I don't know what happened after that, I love Morgan le fay in most retellings but in this one I just couldn't stand her.
This is a very well written take of the old Arthurian legend in the point of view of Morgan. This first book is her as the maiden. Who fell in love and got disillusioned by it. How the jealousy and bitterness began to eat away at her and made her into the Morgan Le Fey we all came to know. It ends there so I suspect in the next book it explores her as the woman. I can't wait to start the next installment and see how Morgan's character evolves.
Arthur and Morgan growing up together and suddenly learning Arthur is heir to the kingdom. I love Arthurian stories and strong woman stories so waiting to see what this series will do with Morgan.
