The greatest discovery in history. If only someone knew what it meant... For six hundred years, academics and enthusiasts have attempted to unlock the mysteries of the Voynich manuscript. Two hundred pages of undecipherable text and bizarre drawings created by an unknown author at an unknown time. History's greatest puzzle.
Otis Rose, renowned personality and boss of Nanotech Pharmaceuticals, believes the manuscript holds the secrets of eternal youth. Desperate to prove that 'nothing is impossible' and in competition with his long-term rival Lionel Moman, Otis has hired dozens of experts from around the world to be the first to crack the code. Only one person is missing. Otis broadcasts a command to the 'Find Dr Ally Oldfield.'
Former FBI agent Daniel Hudson suspects Otis Rose of involvement in an international crime syndicate connected to Voynich's esoteric book. A conspiracy linked to the book's former owners as far back as Rudolf II of Austria whose obsession with alchemy and the occult led to his own pursuit of miracles. To prove Otis's guilt, Hudson needs the six missing pages of the book lost centuries ago - and there's only one woman for the job.
The Pursuit of Miracles is book three of the 'Ally Oldfield' series. If you enjoy historical thrillers with 'crushingly dark humour', surprising twists and a strong female heroine then you'll love Tony Moyle's compelling page turner. Are you ready to solve the world's oldest mystery?
What readers are saying about The Pursuit of Miracles
"A great plot with twists and surprises" "Stonkingly good" "Already can't wait for the next one"
Tony Moyle was born in the small town of Shepton Mallet in 1976. He's spent the last four decades attempting to find a third reason for the town to be famous behind Babycham and a Frank Bruno heavy weight boxing fight. Although he studied Chemistry at Exeter University he was terrible at it and instead fell into a role within the business community. After twenty years of deliberation and prevarication he published his first novel, 'The Limpet Syndrome.' His second novel, and sequel, 'Soul Catchers' is out in November 2017. He lives in the small town of Ashington at the base of the South Downs national park with this wife, Laure, and two children. He regrets that he still currently has a day job.
Occasionally, if you’re really fortunate, you’ll come across something so good, you’ll want it to last a really long time.
And if you’re super-duper, extra-especially fortunate, there’ll be a whole series.
There is a slight issue with aging however, and that being the ability to forget the previous book in the series before the writer has got it together to pen a new one.
So come on Tone, get a move in before I forget this one.
Tony Moyle is such a good writer. You are drawn in from the get-ho and are held in the palm(s) of his hand til the end. (In my case, palms haha.)
It is an intriguing story. Starting with the desecration of a book, the hunt is on to decode the writings, find the missing pages and gain eternal youth. All whilst in competition with another trying to do the same things.
Question is: Would you would want to have eternal youth with a Hapsburg jaw? Would you want eternal youth if you looked like Adonis? Would you kill for the secret of eternal youth?
It's great to see the 3rd book in this series and it's going from strength to strength. More of the characters from previous books are growing up, and Dr. Oldfield (because she'd get moany if I called her Ally since I don't have a doctorate) continues to get dragged into messes that she would rather have nothing to do with.
But sometimes a murderous mess is better than a floating norovirus distribution system full of coffin dodgers!
You all… ALLY IS BACK! In The Pursuit of Miracles by Tony Moyle, Ally takes on a new, terrifying case while also facing the biggest challenge of her life: letting someone get close.
I just love this character so much. Her reactions to literally anything are absolute gold. Pairing this amazing character with Tony’s general writing style, you just know you’re in for a treat! I mean… The golf cart and the open grave scene had me cackling. AND That ending! Oh my gosh, I cannot wait to see what’s next!
This jumps about in time quite frequently, past(s) and present, that would normally irritate me, but in this book it’s just right. Most of it, in any of the timeframes, runs along at breakneck speed, it’s almost hard to keep up. So many funny moments from jokes that aren’t supposed to be funny, but are still hilarious. The plot is deceptively simple, since there are so many twists, you can never guess what’s next. Brilliant story that you think has ended, with a huge cliffhanger leading to the next book. The dry humour is wickedly good.
Ally, sorry, Dr. Oldfield, is my favourite crotchety, antisocial academic. I enjoyed a whole slew of characters from the previous novels coming back, even if Ally didn't. This was another fun ride, with the past and present perspectives slowly unraveling the mystery. I'm excited to see what will come in the next novel (Keith?)
