I didn’t mean to fall in love with her; I swear I didn’t. Mercy DeCorte was the good girl of the WNBA. With two rings, a thriving career, and an unblemished image, she didn’t need someone like me in her corner causing havoc. See, me? I was the bad boy of the NBA, known to throw hands with anyone on and off the court. Associating with me would ruin Mercy’s image. She knew that, but she didn’t care. It wasn’t long before the rumors started, and the haters showed themselves. I had to warn a few people that what we had wasn’t about to be broken. They didn’t listen, though, which was their mistake. I may have been the bad boy of the NBA, but Mercy? She was a DeCorte. Yeah, those DeCortes. Get ready, because you already know this isn’t about to be a normal Hoop Session. – Givens Robbins
I really enjoyed this story. I was very invested but I didn’t feel the love between the two main characters. They definitely didn’t play about each other but like true romance wasn’t present. It’s the way Givens didn’t believe Mercy was about that life. Kids add such a comedic relief to a story.
Weren’t kept being used when it should’ve been wasn’t. The author names A LOT of characters and it’s a lot to keep up with. Total side note, I don’t think it’s up to the author to tell the reader not to leave a review if they DNFd the book. Reviews are for readers and a reader might want to know why the book was DNFd.
I had mixed feelings on this one . I did love Mercy and Givens together but I think I needed more romantic aspects from them. I could tell they didn’t play about each other and their sexy time was immaculate but I wanted them to get to know each other more. I really loved the bond Mercy and Faylin had. Givens was an amazing father but I think Shai should have been dealt with long before she got what she deserved. As always, I was cracking up this entire book because of the Decorte’s. They are my favorite family I have read about.
I was excited to see another Decorte’ read, an automatic download. I was always curious about Mercy as she was not around as much as her cousins with her career in the WNBA. She had this mysterious air about her. But chile she is just as deadly as the Decorte name implies.
Givens, the NBA bad boy, has had his eye on Mercy for a minute and finally gets the opportunity to see what she's about. Everyone tried to tell him that she ain’t what he wants, but he had to f around and find out for himself. She was even dropping gems here and there, but he thought it was all fun and games until ish hit the fan!
For Mercy to just want to have fun, she was popping up at Given’s place like she was a jack in the box. Their chemistry and connection was solid right from the beginning, and I loved watching it all play out. They were locked in and dared anyone to try and break this thang up. Well…. that damn Shai couldn’t leave well enough alone and found out that the Decorte’s are not to be played with. I’m giving Givens a strong 👀 cause he should have handled that heifer long ago! She had way too many chances, with the way she kept up mess, and the neglect of their daughter. Ughhh….. 🤬 However, through it all this couple still found their way to happiness.
Loved the cameos from Krude, Judge, Nine, Cross, Fire, Polka Dot, and Madea. One wild and crazy family, but you gotta love em’. Looking forward to the next one. 👍🏾👍🏾
Yesssssssss!!!! Mercy and Light Skinned Thug 😂😂😂 was everything!!!!!! I love how the family is in everything and rides so hard for each other . The way Light Skin was yoking up my girl was perfection but I loved their dynamic all around. He catered to her dominance while still giving her the space for her femininity !!!! Yesssss Aubry you did this!!!!! I’m so in love with this family !!!! Shani was a dead beat mother in the worst way and she totally got what she deserved !!!!
This was probably a 3/3.5 for me, I really love this authors work but this one just wasn’t my favorite. Is the story good kinda, are the characters decent yes but I found myself more times than a not asking why it was still going on.
Mercy piqued my interest a while back and I couldn’t wait to see who she ended up with. My girl got a dumb baby daddy with a stage 5957 clinger for a BM. Like sorry that’s the best she could do??? That’s what she deserved??? Like the drama was good I wanna say the first 15 chapters or so but after she asked why he ain’t file for full custody I should’ve stopped right there. CUS YEAH WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON?? His excuses was weak and flat and too many warnings were offered to Shai.
Javien storyline was def a set up for the next couple of tales but again it left me wondering why was he alive lmao like okay he owed ole boy but other than Mercy shooting at him he was just coasting by. Givens really pissed me off bad this entire book. Like you maybe a victim of a crime and your thought is let me just pretend it’s not a thing INSTEAD OF ADDRESSING IT. Like okay I get it we goin for the men don’t report crimes angle which is fine but to not tell Mercy was beyond my comprehension. Like every decision he made was the wrong one.
What I will say is I’m definitely interested in some of the characters that were mentioned stories lol like I hope Xoey get a book, I kinda wanna be in Pyrites business a tiny bit Hood and Legacy seem like they’d be fun lol and I’d even be willing to see if Deuce gets Faylin 15 yrs from now. Overall the author is extremely talented and will definitely make you laugh but this story just dragged on for longer than it should’ve because of lack of effort on our MMCs part
This book was good but fell flat in certain areas. The love story piece of it all isn’t there (or it’s too nonchalant for a fictional love story for me) and it honestly felt like they were FWB. They are both unhinged so that is truly the only reason for the 3.
Yeahhh I’m cool on Aubry J. for a while! She got too many characters and 95% of them are unlikeable down to the damn kids. This book ain’t don nothing but piss me off. I DNF’d at about 90%. Around the time her cousins gave Givens (HATED his name btw) the footage from the hotel. Which if they did all that they could have just given Mercy all the footage so she had context to the situation instead of just jumping to conclusions. Or maybe I’m thinking too rationally for this author.
P.S. Them saying Mercy was that lil girl momma and she’d been in her life less than 6 months was truly insane.
Listen, this book was a lot. It damn near felt like two different stories.
We had the love story of 2 ballers...Mercy Decorte, a WNBA star and Givens Robbins, an NBA star. While Mercy was beloved in her sport, Givens was seen as the bad boy of the league. Together they were a force to be reckoned with. I would have loved to have just a little more of them on the court, just to tie the story together more.
I liked Givens, but his money solutions with Shai, his baby mama, pissed me off. Like you are famous go to court and cut the ish out. He was both aggressive and passive with her and it almost seemed like he didn't take her serious when it was clear she was a problem. Mercy was the epitome of don't judge a book by its cover. She was cool until she wasn't, then her unhinged side would come out to play. I also loved that she would take charge and boss up on Givens. My favorite part was how Mercy's family embraced Givens' daughter. They didn't play about her at all.
Overall, it was all right but it was somewhat disjointed to me.
I literally only got to 4% in to this book and I had to DNF. I will probably come back in the future but for now I’m over it.
I can already see the route this author is about to take with the baby momma. Let me guess…. He is going to get into a relationship with the WNBA star basketball player, we already see that the daughter wants to play basketball so her and the daughter are going to form an AMAZING bond through basketball that the daughter and the mother don’t have. The daughter is probably going to want to live with the dad. The author is going to write the mom as the worst person ever and convince us that the girlfriend is more of a mom to the daughter.
As a black woman I absolutely love black authors and black books and black stories. Urban fiction is probably one of my fav genres but I’m so tired of black authors constantly portraying “baby mamas” in the light that they do in urban fiction books if they aren’t the FMC. They are always being portrayed as bitter, evil, ghetto, broke, unfit, unstable, jealous, less than or still obsessed with the BD and I’m OVER IT🙄🙄🙄. Don’t get me wrong now, I’m well aware that there definitely are some deadbeat good for nothing moms out there. But damn, every book??? Do these authors not know that they can still write stories about the girlfriend and the step kids forming a relationship without tearing down the mother. It’s ok for the kid to have an amazing relationship with the mother and still form a relationship with the new gf. Do they not know that they can write full on stories without even mentioning the mom at all. It can be left at the simple fact that the mom and the dad didn’t work out and now they co parent amicably.
It’s ok for both parties to have moved on in peace because unbeknownst to these authors some “baby mamas” do not still want their “baby daddy’s”. Like damn is that the only drama y’all can think to write about in these books (baby mamma still obsessed with baby daddy and is making the new girl life a living hell and hating on her while actively being an unfit parent who the child don’t like or want to be around but the child prefers and probably refers to the new gf as mom🙄🙄). At this point I don’t even care to read that trope anymore with the dad having a kid because I already know the weak ass storyline 😕😕🙃🙃.
IT TOOK TOO LONG FOR THEM TO GET RID OF SHAI TRIFLING AZZ. THEN TO KNOW THAT SHE HAD BEEN BEHIND ALL THE RUMORS STRIDING HIS CAREER. SHE HAD A HANDS IN THAT DR IS WORTH THAT BIG 🥷 JAVIEN. BUT WHEN THAT BIG ADMITTED TO GETTING FAILYN SAID DR OVER THE YEARS WHEN AS SHE SAID "NEEDED SOME ALONE TIME" I WAS BEING DONE WITH THAT SELFISH VINDICTIVE SORT EXCUSE FOR AN EGG DONOR🤬🤬🤬🤬. THEY SHOULD’VE MADE THAT BIH SUFFER FOR THAT ISH AND ALL THE OTHER ISH THAT CAME OUT🤷🏽♀️
I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO WHATEVER PYRITE HAS IN STORE FOR JAVIEN
FAILYN WAS A GREAT ADDED BONUS TO THE DECORTE CLAN. DEUCE SAY THAT’S GONNA BE HIS WIFE👀👀👀
AS ALWAYS, IT WAS GREAT CATCHING UP WITH THE REST OF THE CREW, ESPECIALLY MADEA AND KRUDE CRAZY AZZ
WHEW CHIL! GIVINS & MERCY🤎! THESE TWO DRESSES ME TF OUT🤦🏽♀️🤣! THEY UNDERESTIMATED EACH OTHERS GANGSTA AND HAD TO LEARN THE HARD WAY THAT THEY ARE BOTH ABOUT THAT LIFE. I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED WHEN HE DIDN’T TELL HER ABOUT THAT ISH SHAI HAD BEEN PULLING, ESPECIALLY THERE ISH IN CHICAGO. AFTER NINE DID HIS DIGGING HE HAD THEM BOTH APOLOGIZING TO EACH OTHER. AS KRUDE CRAZY AZZ CALLS THEM THE LIGHT SKIN THUG AND THE HELL RAISER MADE ONE HELL OF TEAM ON AND OF THE COUNTER. THE WAY THEY JUST FELL INTO LIFE TOGETHER ENSURING FAILYN GOT ALL THE LOVE AND SUPPORT SHE NEEDED FROM BOTH PARENTS🫶🏽.
First off, the hero's name is Givens Robbin lmao. This book was on a funny time just off of that name! The FMC Mercy was such a fun character and didn’t play! Coming from her family, I’m not surprised. Gave Madea and a big family when Mercy’s family is involved. Also, Mercy’s family being in the same business was fun to read about, as it was interesting to see how each of them played a role when it was go time. Shai, Javien, and Melissa, you all got what you deserved, smh. Terrible characters with some very dark tendencies. Both Shai and Javien had terrible ways that almost stopped me from finishing the book. CW: lack of consent and coercion.
Despite the drama and dark moments, this book was also funny and romantic. Looking forward to Book 2!
I think I loved how Mercy kinda came across as a Hellraiser in name only everywhere but in the bedroom. She gave Givens a run for his money. She is so soft and vulnerable when she is with him. All he wanted to do was protect and shield her. Until she wasn't.
Gah, I loved riding with the whole family! When did Fire become such a man-child? Lol!
So, Corinthians, Four, Paul and lil Judah are next? “I’m the reason our parents are dead.” Yeah, we need to unpack that!!
📚Genre: urban fiction/ Sports Roma 🔥Spice Level: 3.5 😢Tears: Maybe
I said what I said and as always: don't take my word for it. Read the book, form your own opinions, and support your authors! 🫶🏿📖👏🏾
Mann as always Iove this authors.. literally read her entire catalog and she never disappoints. Now 4 boys though!!! I legit love these two because of the way they arr with each other. The bond they built is strong no matter the situation. I said through the entire story that Mercy gonna beat up Givens for lying and baby the way she handled that was epic. Definitely can't wait to read more. I feel like Xoey has a lot to unpack so she may need 2 books lol
Aubry J. is fantastic at writing unhinged characters, but her unhinged females… chef's kiss. Merci is exactly my type of FMC. Baby girl played absolutely no games with anyone, including Givens. I loved them together and how she accepted and loved his daughter. I side-eyed Givens for being stupid because his keeping the truth from Merci was just stupid, but this was cute and funny read.
I overall liked it but it’s clearly in the middle of a series and I missed that, which is my fault. It read okay as a stand-alone but Mercy’s network of family and friends were so intertwined into this book as supporting characters and there were so many of them that I was lost at times. Givens was so-so as a hero, a little given to making big dog statements that weren’t really backed up anywhere but in bed… he was also a little handsy and dumb about his ex, Shai… all in all, it was okay, I would read more in this series but I might also want to start from the beginning so the ensemble cast makes sense.
2.5⭐️🌶️🌶️ This had the potential to be a good story; it just missed the mark. I do like that we got to see other characters from the author’s other books. And I like the chemistry between Mercy and Givens’ daughter.
4/5 - The drama was real but they took me on a ride. I enjoyed Mercy & Givens “Light Skin Thug” story. Loved how Mercy’s family showed up and out behind Givens daughter.
Definitely almost DNF’d about 45% then 60% in when it was clear that the BM was gonna be on her best BS. For Givens to be the “bad boy of the NBA”…he let his BM play in his face and cause problems for too long & gave way too many excuses about not handling her. I also didn’t like him keeping Mercy in the dark about what happened for so long. I get having to take time to figure things out but communication is key. I was tense reading this just waiting for the ball to drop.
I was also surprised at how quickly Mercy accepted being in a relationship when it didn’t seem like that’s what she wanted initially. So I would have liked to see more pushback in that respect, to make Givens actually earn her.
Anyway, I did like Mercy’s family but there were just way too many characters for me to keep track of. The author links their books which is helpful if you wanted to read them. I’m a little curious, but I doubt I’ll go and read all of the other books about them. Well maybe I’ll read Krude’s book because he had me cackling. Like how are you singing N’Sync when somebody is about to 💀
The ending felt a little incomplete to me. But otherwise this was a quick, maybe a little predictable but decent read.
The book was good overall but I definitely felt like it could have been shorter after awhile it felt like I was forcing myself to finish it. I liked the main character overall
As always I love the DeCorte family. This was Mercy and Givens story. And as always if one DeCorte family member moves they all move. I truly enjoyed this book.
Quote: “Between her and her family they’ll hunt your yellow ass down and kill you.”
I am such a big fan of Aubry J and her writing. She never misses in my opinion. This book is a standalone and can be read without reading other books in her catalog. I would suggest reading all of them though. DISCLAIMER: 95% of the things I read have a trigger warning and I love it. Protect your peace and mental health at all cost!!!
Like all of my reviews, I won’t spoil it for you, but what I can tell you is if you are not prepared to fall in love with a universe of fictional characters 😂 this book is not for you. This is the journey of our FMC Mercy DeCorte (Yes that DeCorte IYKYK!) and our bad boy MMC Givens Robbin’s. Both players play professional basketball, but are navigating their profession in completely different ways. What you will learn from our FMC and MMC is everything is not always what they seem to be. Our FMC is navigating her professional image and sanity 😂 while our MMC is navigating his profession, fatherhood, and of course a bitter baby mama.I am not going to lie, the way I wanted to jump in a punch Shai right in the liver 🤷🏽♀️😂 This journey is such a wild ride, but I promise you going to love it here 😂
This book is written with great character development and imagery as always. Aubry J allowed us to see some of our favorite characters. To make it easier, she even took the extra step to hyperlink the characters books for reference. There are an only a select few authors who love us enough to do that. Thanks Aubry J. When I am reading, I love an experience and this just was a top tier add to reading her book.
You will love this book if you love plot, urban rom-com, spice, sports romance (Well…. An atypical sports romance), and of course this genre Urban Fiction.IYKYK! Again, check your trigger warnings. Happy reading!
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice:🌶️ 🌶️🌶️.5 (based on my own delu lu scale)
Ooowwwweeeeee!!!! Aubry always come through for me 👏🏽
Givens and Mercy or should I say Mr. plant daddy or Mr. Count down 😮💨 and Ms. Hell raiser.
I really enjoyed this story!!! The drama, banter, and everyone’s love for each other. It was good catching up with Mercy’s family! Everyone is still crazy 😭
Givens, NBA’s bad boy definitely likes things people tell him to stay away from . Mercy had that man hooked. When Mercy said “drop them shorts” I lost it 🤯
Mercy was trying to tell Givens who she was but he wasn’t listening to my girl. Givens was too busy talking to “his Queen” if you know what I mean 🥵
Mercy was definitely a hell raiser; she had me speechless at the end of the book . Mercy dog walked Shai literally. And sadly, I didn’t feel bad for Shai cause she was asking for it.
Mercy’s love for Faylin just warmed my heart . I was hoping for another little Givens but I have high hopes in the next book . I love the way Mercy’s family loved and supported Faylin !!
Xoey and her 12 personalities had me hollin . I definitely enjoyed her and Mercy’s friendship. I would love a book on her, she seems to be the life of the party.
I knew that Mercy wasnt a good girl because she’s a Decorte lol… Givens thought she was playing when she said she wasn’t what she appeared to be. He quickly learned that she was indeed about that life lol…. I loved the love that Givens had for his daughter, Faylin and how quickly she bonded with Mercy.
I love the stories that Aubry writes because she has a way of giving you a good storyline filled with funny and unhinged moments. It’s the perfect blend that will have you laughing and falling in love with the characters. Whoever said she writes Urban RomComs was spot on because that’s exactly what you get with each story. Every time she mentions a new friend or family member I can’t wait to get their story. I want her to write a story about all the friends of the Decortes and even some of the extended family members. I love a tight knit crew that loyal to each other and always down to ride.
Aubry J is an auto read/buy author for me and I look forward to reading more by her❤️ if you haven’t read her catalog, read ‘em ALL. lol
I liked it, but didn’t love it. Now, everyone warned him abt Mercy but I swear I thought they meant she had a smart mouth. My flabbers were gasted by the end of the book I couldn’t wrap my brain around certain points Givens was the “bad boy” but Shai was wreaking havoc. I felt like the bad boy would have had her in check 14 years ago. I feel like the Javien thing was glossed over real quick so I think it’ll play out in future books. Mercy’s family had me BIG LOST! Loved them down but gave up trying to figure them out. The little one that had a crush on Fay was hilarious!! That dialogue had me giddy.
I felt like Givens was doing what a lot of men with money do. Throw money at their problems. That was beyond annoying and I get what Mercy was asking like how are you paying child support, she lives with you and you give her a deposit every month? Why haven’t you gotten custody?!?! But I also understand his point where he didn’t have the family support Mercy has & doesn’t seem to be the one that asks for help. I hope future books dissect his family dynamic. I love how mercy & her family rallied for Faylin
This was a great read and beautiful addition to the DeCorte family Saga!!!… That intro to Givens from Lil Mecca was everything and his protective stance while Faylin was in the hospital!!!…He’s letting it be known, she’s his and he means it!!!… I am so happy for Mercy!!!…She has a little family and with a man that has been crushing on her for a long time!!!… Mercy said her man don’t need to get his hands dirty when she is more than capable of doing it!!!… I love how her sister cousin circle stepped for her!!!.. What’s a story without Krude and his shenanigans!!!…I love how he got the children in order to sing on that beautiful Sunday morning!!!… Givens bossed up on Mercy and let her know they were not done!!!… He should have handled the situation with Shai a tad bit better, because she was definitely running over him where their child was concerned!!!…
Mercy and Givens!! Wow is all I can say about their love story!! They are the perfect ready made family, he’s a single dad with a crazy baby mom, that falls for his daughter’s favorite basketball player. They are both what the other needs to bring balance to their life.
Of course my favorite families (the DeCorte & the Strong) made an appearance in this book, which means my best friend, Krude, was being his crazy self from beginning to end.
I’m glad I decided to read Aubry’s catalog in order instead of just reading this book first and then going back because even though it’s a standalone book, this book was built around events that happened in other books and it shows how this group of families and friends don’t play about each other!!
Definitely a must read and I can’t wait for the next book!!
If it involves a DeCorte, a Strong, a Lincoln, a Carlson or a friend count me in !
I have yet to be disappointed! You do your big one every time! I love the dynamic in all the books and how everyone is connected somehow! Mercy was definitely a lil on the “quiet” mysteries side but she’s apart of the Bible thumpers lol with Krude as her brother-cousin!? Yeahhhh I knew she wasn’t nicknamed hellraiser for nothing haha ! Givens was definitely her match for sure and I absolutely adore how they embraced Faylin and showed that baby what love and family really was ! Can’t wait for Hood Legacy to drop. Can’t be best friends with Mercy DeCorte and remain COMPLETELY sane/innocent lol . Doesn’t seem plausible lol and with Hood on her line? Yeahhhh good luck lol 10/10 highly recommend
