Maya takes her time before jumping into the exercises, covering a lot of important groundwork first: defining key concepts, explaining how to set up your space, and offering recommendations for mats, objects, and clothing (essential equipment and attire). She also does a great job explaining the science behind stress, the nervous system, and somatic exercises, and why these exercises actually work 🧠✨
📘Structure & Clarity While I did find some section titles a bit confusing, the content itself is simple, accessible, and easy to follow. I especially appreciated her section on “setting realistic goals,” which thoughtfully lays out important principles for approaching somatic work in a sustainable, grounded way
🌍Honoring Origins One thing I really loved is how Maya credits the pioneers and cultures these practices come from, honoring their origins She also includes both the original and commonly used names for poses (for example, Child’s Pose – Balasana), which felt respectful and grounding.
🧘♀️The Exercises Themselves Each pose comes with clear, step-by-step instructions, written in simple language that makes them approachable even if this is your first time trying somatic practices. That said, I would have loved to see alternatives or adaptations for every pose, especially for different body types, as well as some notes around balance and flexibility — which felt a bit missing here.
🧠Mind, Body… Spirit? I also felt the mind and spirit aspect was somewhat missing. There’s little to no mention of cognitive or emotional reactions, not even gentle cues like “if your mind wanders, bring it back to the practice.” Some poses, in particular, really could have benefited from that layer ✨ Similarly, I would have appreciated if each exercise explained what it’s working on. Some poses do include explanations — and a few are beautifully poetic — but not all of them do. While the poses are grouped under chapters like anxiety, stress, tension and trauma management, individual clarity sometimes felt inconsistent.
✨Minimalism & Practicality That said, I do appreciate the minimalism of this resource and Maya’s clear intention to make it easy to return to and practice daily. I also really liked that after explaining each pose in detail, she includes several structured plans, combining poses into sequences designed for specific types of release: practical and supportive 🙌

📝Final Notes on the Workbook As for the additional workbook: I wouldn’t say it adds much beyond fundamental questions and basic exercises, but it’s appreciated nonetheless. A nice extra, even if not groundbreaking.

There are beginner moves but also more advanced moves that I haven't seen in other books. These will help me advance more. Can't wait to add a few to my regular routine. So much information about the Vagus nerve and how to get it back in synch. Exercises are shown as a picture and also explained in detail in how to do them. References are listed at the end. Great resource book.
