What would you do if you found out your soulmate was responsible for your greatest tragedy?
Nara Laverran has spent her life searching for answers about the massacre that destroyed her childhood home. When her mysterious powers suddenly awaken, she finds herself face-to-face with Seth Vaerien—the silver-haired, storm-eyed guardian who's been watching her from the shadows for twenty years.
The truth? He's responsible for all of it.
Seth has spent decades fighting the monster inside him, a revenant named Chaos that once made him the perfect weapon. Now he'll do anything to protect Nara from the forces hunting her—even if it means confronting the darkness they share.
But Seth isn't the only one with a claim to Nara. Osiris, his former lover and leader of the mysterious Ennead, will stop at nothing to reclaim Seth's loyalty. As ancient powers resurface and deadly secrets unravel, all three will discover that some bonds transcend fate... and some betrayals can never be forgiven.
THE CAGE OF CHAOS is the first book in the gothic fantasy romance duology The Ennead, where gods left pieces of themselves behind and the monsters we become are the ones we choose to be.
Wren Blackburne writes gothic horror romance that explores identity, belonging, and authentic connection through a supernatural lens. Their work examines what it means to exist between definitions, centering characters learning to own their most savage parts while claiming spaces that weren't designed for them. Wren's stories are for anyone who has ever felt like they are too much and not enough, all at the same time.
As a nonbinary, AuDHD, bisexual, and mixed-race author, Wren writes from the lived experience of existing in-between. When not writing, they can be found buying too many pens, painting, and playing video games. They live in Southern California with their husband and two dogs, Hamilton and Eliza.
This was a delicious book to slip into in December: if you like atmospheric reading, pick this one up when it’s dark and stormy out for sure. This book is the embodiment of “dark academia” and I want to wear it like a cloak.
I appreciate a book that respects the reader’s intelligence in its world building and doesn’t drag us down with lengthy prologues or clunky exposition or long monologues from characters explaining why things are the way that they are. Cage of Chaos avoids this burden and we slide easily into Bastillion, its history and its magic system.
The same could also be said of the book’s queer relationships: central to the plot and characters, in a way that doesn’t require explanation or discussion—simply part of their character.
Loved everything about this book: pacing, plot line, well-developed characters, magic system. I’ve recently been enjoying fantasy/romantasy that steps away from the expected sword and shield kind of setting like this one. Eagerly looking forward to the second installment!!
This was fantastic. The writing was great, I loved the story, and I am so excited for book 2. The pacing and the plotting went smoothly and made sense. The stakes felt appropriate for the characters’ actions.
If you love a down bad MMC with white blonde hair, you have your next favorite man in this book.
This book surprised me in the best way. I saw it, thought it looked cool, and then got so aggressively sucked into it.
You know when you read a book and the mystery of the world building just leaves you confused and bored? This was whatever the opposite of that would be. The story-building is the perfect blend of "What is going on?????" while simultaneously figuring out what, in fact, is going on. I still don't full know what on earth is happening (looking at you, AMON) but neither does Nara, so I'm okay with that.
The diction, imagery, and wordplay in this was beautiful. So many swoon-worthy quotes. My English teacher heart loved the writing.
Last thing - this is my first book with a shadow mommy and I 👏🏼 am 👏🏼 here 👏🏼 for 👏🏼 it. We love a powerful queen who can take care of herself.
Last thing, part 2 - the queer representation is so seamlessly done in a way that just fits the characters without making it A Thing. They just are who they are and love who they love.
This was full of witty banter and savage one-liners! The character dynamics were a wild ride with a mix of a love triangle tension and found family feels!
Nara, the FMC, seems to struggle with her own personal dynamic. She's quick with the banter and snark, yet still comes across as a little docile and innocent. Seth, one of the MMCs, is angsty and constantly at war with himself. Osiris, the other MMC, is all sorts of jealous, broody energy and his lines were on par!
"Orbit her all you want ... I'll always be who you reach for in the dark."
👀
I really wish the different POVs were labeled, because there were a few times I had to restart a chapter to figure out whose POV I was in. A few chapters in the middle also dragged a bit, but just when I started to get restless the worldbuilding pulled me back in. The lore sprinkled throughout was such a highlight and I'm hoping book 2 dives even deeper!
The cover is gorgeous and now that I finished the book I love spotting all of the little details that tie into the story. Overall, this was a strong start to the duet! Despite a few pacing and POV hiccups, I’m completely invested in this chaotic, god-filled mess.
Thanks to the author and Untold Stories for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.
Despite a somewhat slow start, I eventually got very much into this book! The characters are wonderful. I immediately loved Nara and Seth, and while I did not completely understand how everything was shaping out until much later in the book, I was eager to be along for the ride. I also really liked Osiris, who makes for such an interesting component thrown into the mix. It is hard to choose a favorite character, as they are all so well written, but Seth’s story especially interested me. There is also an academia element to the story. I have read academia before, but not as often as I read other settings!
I found the pacing to work really well, and I trusted the author to tie up loose ends, which definitely happened. The way information was given felt natural and smooth, a huge part of my enjoyment with books like these! While the plot was very interesting, the romance was equally as exciting to read. I typically lean more in the direction of the plot and politics, or whatever stakes are presented, but a good romance will interest me just as much, and this one did! While I rooted for Nara and Seth, I couldn’t help but love Osiris too! Likewise, the way Chaos and Pride is woven into this book, with the concept of reverents, made for a very interesting element and side to the characters.
The Cage of Chaos is an original and memorable book with characters you can’t help but love, and who have incredible chemistry. I highly enjoyed it, and I’m happy there is still more to come.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Cage of Chaos was a surprise read for me. I’m not entirely sure why, but I went in expecting something very different from what I actually got—and what I got, I loved.
The writing isn’t the simplest, but it’s not overly complex either. It sits right on that fine line, making it a great fit for NA or adult readers. I really loved the character dynamics, and this is where the book truly shines. There’s so much context behind each action, and the dialogue between characters feels layered and intentional.
There are some genuinely good surprise twists, along with a few heartbreaking moments. For some reason, this book gave me mature Harry Potter vibes—if it had more supernatural beings (don’t ask me why, it was just the feeling I got).
If you’re after an emotionally complex romantasy filled with yearning, betrayal, and twists, I honestly think you might really enjoy this one.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this this ARC!
I really enjoyed this arc and it left me on a cliffhanger wanting more. This story has many tropes that I gravitate toward: forced proximity, touch/emotion starved MMC, FMC can control shadows (this was refreshing), found family, and a love triangle.
This story starts with our FMC, Nara, searching for answers about a massacre that left her orphaned at a young and her childhood home completely destroyed. Vale, her professor and person she lives with, questions her college proposal that contained over three years of her research. He instills in Nara that her very research could cause fallout and destroy her reputation. Feeling lost along the way, she ends up going to the one person that could provide her with the truth. Little does she know, Seth knows more of the truth than what Nara is ready for. In the midst of it all, Nara has dark powers that awake in her causing her to be a target for the other reverents.
Seth, who is by far my favorite character, spends his life fighting against the reverent named Chaos. Instead of learning how to live with chaos, Seth attempts to cage chaos causing him to suffer mentally and physically. He isolates himself from everyone.
Along the way, we meet his ex-lover Osiris (Pride), who is not ready to let go of what they had. "Because you want it both ways. You want to have her, and you want to have me, because when you fuck it all up with her, you'll still need someone to crawl back to, and that person has to be me."
The part that really tore me a part in this story is when Seth opens up to Nara. He lays himself bare for her. "If I could ask one thing-just one thing after everything I've done.....don't send me away....Take whatever pieces of me you want and leave the rest." GUYS this part of the story was so beautiful!
I would rate this story a 4.5 for me. Due to this story being written in third person I found myself going back and rereading some of the lines because I would get lost in what was happening. That may just be me though! I read this story without any breaks and I really enjoyed the story of Nara, Seth, and Osiris. I can't wait for book 2 where I'm sure we will see more of them!
This was such an interesting story. I will admit that i was a little confused in the beginning trying to understand the concept behind these revenants. Once i grasped the concept behind them I was completely intrigued with where this story would go. I do wish we would have gotten some more background information on how Amon found and transferred these revenants into the bodies. And I also would have liked to have had more information on this so called Storm that was caused by Hades, which is what caused these revenants to be in existence. There are multiple times throughout the story that this topic is brought up but the history or background is more implied and left me really needing much more. I think more detail on these topics would have helped really make the story much more clear and a little easier to follow along. I found myself slowing down my reading pace to make sure i was able to really absorb the story. There is a lot of push and pull between the MC and FMC, almost to the point of overkill. I started to care less about whether the two would figure out their issue and more about what was going to happen next with Amon and the revenants. I do like that the ending leaves us in limbo for book two, it isnt really a cliffhanger, it felt more like a play and the curtain coming down to signal the end of the first act. I am really looking forward to seeing how Osiris character will take the lead in this next book and how the love triangle plays out. Overall i enjoyed the story and i am invested in the plot. I was lucky enough to get to read this in advanced as an ARC from the author. All these thoughts and feelings towards the book are just my genuine reaction to how the book made me feel while reading. If you are looking for something with a unique magic structure and lots of push/pull tension then I recommend adding this to you tbr. Parts of this gave me the bonds that tie vibes for anyone who has read the series.

Review: This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! I loved the author’s writing and I couldn’t get enough of this story! I found all the characters intriguing! The romance! I feel torn apart! I won’t lie and say I wish Nara, Seth, and Osiris would just end up as a throuple! I loved all these characters and their chemistry with one another! 🤣 The pacing was perfect and I didn’t want this book to end! I am completely enraptured by this story! I need book two now!
Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance!
*ARC Review* Thank you to Wren Blackburne for sending me a copy!
Intro: This book is the first in a duet fantasy romance where Nara, a university professor, awakens a dark power within herself and tries to uncover the truth about her dark past.
Tropes/Highlights: -FM -Open Door Spice (1 scene) -Love Triangle -On The Run -Unique Powers -Undeniable Connection
Likes: -Unique powers in play -Love the back stories and how past scenes are shown/described -Messy tangle of emotions, emotional turmoil -Lots of suspenseful scenes -He would do anything to protect her -Shared connection between MCs
My Dislikes: -Most of the book was building up to something and you don't find out what that is in this book, I wanted a little more drama/insight into the villain's plan
Quotes: -"Orbit her all you want, I'll always be who you reach for in the dark." -"There was nothing in this wide expanse of night that felt more like coming home than he did." -"You and he would follow each other anywhere. Into darkness, and into death." -"You could break me apart in ways Chaos never could."
I love the relationship between Nara, Seth and Osiris and the complex tangle of emotions and attachments between all of the characters. These characters have a lot of hurt and issues and I hope the second book gives them all a HEA. I am eager to see how the second book developes the central plot of the story and how Nara's power will continue to manifest. Wren did a really great job with setting the tone for scenes and how she described flashbacks and dialogue. You may like this book if you like fantasy material with darker themes and deeply troubled characters.
Wanted to thank untoldstoriespr and Wren Blackburne for the arc opportunity for The Cage of Chaos! I gave this book a 4 star rating and here is why:
This story had such an interesting concept! This is a gothic fantasy romance and our characters have these things called reverents. For example, Seth is Chaos and Osiris is Pride. Seth is our touch starved MMC as he feels like the best way to cage chaos is to lock himself away to keep everyone safe. Osiris is Pride and he feels immense pain and heartache whenever he is rejected and such. Nara our FMC is struggling to figure out what happened during the massacre that left her orphaned. She is determined and headstrong and is willing to do as much research as she can even when she is warned that her work could cause problems for herself. The only person Nara feels like she can trust is Seth who holds more secrets than he is willing to let out into the world.
Character wise, I would say Seth is my favorite. He has been struggling so hard to try and cage the chaos inside of him so when he is actually around Nara or Osiris..you can feel the inner turmoil he is going through. And when he does finally decide to open up to Nara…let’s just say that part will stay with me forever. Overall I loved the vibes of this one and I really want to see book two in hopes that we get to see more of Nara, Seth and Osiris because something tells me that this is just the beginning!
An academic outcast has to team up with a defected chaos agent, and the hunt (continues) for both of them.
I really enjoyed the slow burn and slow reveals of the mysteries and magic throughout this book. Our main characters are interesting and multifaceted, and they have a supporting cast that is also two/three-dimensional, a feat in a debut novel. The magic system and interweave of Egyptian mythos was intriguing as well. While there are some classic tropes (miscommunication, slow burn, jealous exes, etc.), they all seem to be in service of the plot and are aligned with the characters' motives, making them feel integrated.
My only critique is our FMC having a somewhat quick turnaround on her opinion of the MMC; high pressure scenarios surely help, but given her proclivity to be closed off, her willingness to open herself up feel a little rushed.
*Thank you for providing me with a free eARC for my honest review!*
First off what a wild ride! FMC orphaned no idea what happened to her parents. She has so many unanswered questions about her life and everything that has happened in the world she lives in. This gives love triangle. Seth one of the MMC “chefs kiss” brooding recluse and so mysterious and captivating. FMC is a scholar and wants to research things that are taught to others as evil and with her reputation on the line is frowned against her pursuing. Academic vibes. The plot is so good! All the history and philosophical material that the author puts into it draws you in where you keep turning the page wanting to know more. She built the storyline absolutely incredible. I couldn’t put the book down! I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next. The story is not predictable and you will get a lot of wth just happened moments and I LOVED it! I would 100% recommend picking up this book! -Kerin Ray
Nara Leverran has been trying for years to solve the mystery of the sudden destruction of her childhood and her journey has led her to becoming a researcher. And while a few fellow academics disagree with her research, there is a protector that never seems to be too far from her.
While I was immediately drawn in by the dark vibe and what feels to be dark academia with a combination of mysterious powers and characters, I also struggled with the novel. At times, it felt very overwhelming because there is so much happening. The worldbuilding feels slow but at the same time, there’s a sense that all the events are leading up to something much bigger than what’s being revealed in this first book of a duology.
If you’re someone who is looking for a dark mysterious time and a combination of some unknown power, then consider giving The Cage of Chaos a try.
Thank you to Wren Blackburne and Untold Stories PR for the gifted ARC. All opinions are my own.
The Cage of Chaos by Wren Blackburne is a gripping, dark, and emotionally charged read that completely pulled me in from the very first page. Blackburne masterfully weaves together suspense, intense romance, and high-stakes drama, creating a story that is impossible to put down. Every chapter is filled with tension, heartache, and unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The characters are beautifully complex—flawed, vulnerable, and incredibly compelling. Their struggles and emotional growth are portrayed with raw honesty, making it easy to become deeply invested in their journeys. The romance is intense, passionate, and layered, perfectly complementing the chaos and danger surrounding them.
The pacing is flawless, moving seamlessly between moments of tension, heartbreak, and intimacy. Themes of trust, survival, and resilience are explored with depth, giving the story both emotional weight and thrilling suspense.
I was completely absorbed by this book from start to finish. Nara was strong, smart, and desperate to uncover the truth about her past. Seth was brooding, mysterious, and utterly captivating, and the tension between him and Nara was intense, and impossible to ignore. The love triangle with Osiris added so much drama, making every interaction unpredictable and thrilling. The gothic fantasy world was beautifully crafted, with magic, gods, and secrets that kept me hooked. The romance was emotional, and passionate. The pacing was smooth, the plot twists kept me guessing, and the found-family vibes and character growth added real depth. I finished the book completely satisfied but craving more of Nara, Seth, and Osiris. Thank you so much to the author and Untold Stories PR for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.
If you like your fantasy dark, moody, and dripping in “something is very wrong here,” then welcome to The Cage of Chaos where shadows have personalities and trauma is basically a supporting character.
Nara, our girl, wakes up with powers and absolutely zero instruction manual. Love that for her. She’s out here trying to survive encroaching darkness while also figuring out what she’s capable of and honestly? Watching her step into her strength is chef’s kiss. The growth? Real. The internal battles? Messy in the best way.
And then there’s Seth.
Protective. Broody. Wrestling his own demons while trying to keep Nara safe. Sir, please. The emotional tension alone could power a small city. His inner conflict adds depth instead of just serving as decorative angst, and I appreciated that. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to Wren Blackburne and Untold Stories PR for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC!
This story was about our FMC Nara who has been THROUGH IT. She is needing answers, answers that can only truly be solved by one person. [but let’s insert 3: Seth, Chaos, and Osiris] oh man. Nara uncovers truths and a darkness awakens within her. A great story that was beautifully written, and left me wanting so much more with that cliffhanger. I was not ready for it to end, but I’m so excited for what it is to come. I have no doubt that it will be just as good, if not better.
If you’re into Gothic Fantasy Romance, this book is for you!! The Cage Of Chaos will be released October 7th! It’s too good not to check out 🥹
Let's talk about The Cage of Chaos by Wren Blackburne.
"They were pain, and suffering, and the passage of time. They were change, and failure, and death. He'd never stood a chance."
I absolutely inhaled this book! What a completely different story than what I'm used too. A world bent on magical chaos, towns annihilated, and uncovered secrets that could destroy worlds, Wren pulls us into her lyrical prose of redemption and obsessive longing.
You're introduced to our stoic FMC Nara, who has no clue that she holds immense magic within her - that with just the right trigger she could unleash a catastrophic catalyst upon the world. She's been trying for years to uncover the mystery surrounding her childhood homes destruction and with each step she feels like she's getting closer. When finally her magic does come forth, she's thrust into a dangerous game - caught between what she knows and what has been kept from her for all her life.
In walks Seth, our devastatingly angry and raging MMC, who is quite obsessively enthralled with Nara. He's been watching her for years, waiting until that pivotal moment when her magic would take flight. But he's also battling demons of his own. His past is just around the corner, lurking in the background as his prior love is quite literally biting at his heels.
"They're devastating," she whispered. "You're devastating."
When their two worlds collide, life has become a test of courage and survival. This book pulled me in quickly. It was fast, heart pounding, and cruel. The turbulent relations between the Seth and his past was achingly tragic. With Nara pushing into the fold, the twist and pull of the threads that Wren weaved introduced such feeling, I didn't know who I should root for or who I should cry for. Needless to say, I am pining for book two already.
Thank you to Untold Stories PR and Wren Blackburne for this wonderful ARC for the chance to give my open and honest review.
✨ Fated Mates ✨ Academic / Military Setting ✨ Love Triangle ✨ He Obsessively Falls First ✨ World Building ✨ High Stakes ✨ Magic Wielding
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Spice: 🔥🔥 .5 Series: Book 1 of 2
Richly layered and immersive with a perfect dark academia aesthetic. The atmosphere is amazing - moody and almost suffocating, reflecting the book's themes.
The author clearly respects the reader's intelligence as there's little exposition. The well thought out and developed world and magic system unfold naturally, and the engagingstory keeps moving without feeling either rushed or stagnant.
The writing's beautiful and poetic, at times bordering on lyrical, which enhances the emotional weight and the lingering sense of unease. The characters are likeable and believable, with realistic motivations and flaws.
Really looking forward to the next book!
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review
I was fortunate to receive an ARC for this book and really enjoyed the story so far! I liked Nara, Seth, and Osiris though I'm thinking I missed out not reading the prequel novella first! I'll definitely be reading it next though. I found the world building really interesting, and though I have a lot of questions remaining, it's all things I would expect to learn in the second book rather than a lack of explanation in the first.
I'm really interested to see how things play out and learn more about the Ennead. Definitely recommend for anyone who likes: complicated love triangles, interesting magic systems, internal struggle, and uncovering mysteries nearly lost to time.
This story is so much fun while still making your heart do gymnastics. The tension, the sparks, the drama — it’s like a rollercoaster you never want to get off. And the characters? Ugh, they’re chaotic, swoony, frustrating, and hilarious all at once. You find yourself shipping, yelling at them, and low-key laughing at the mess they make… all while desperately wanting to know what’s going to happen next.
Honestly, it’s one of those books that makes you forget the world exists for a few hours. I finished it and immediately had that panicked “what do I do now?” feeling because I need the next one like yesterday. Total binge-read vibes.
This story was raw pain and yearning in a gothic fantasy setting.
We see how thin is the barrier between love and hate, and how much torment it is to be in this middle. And wow, we had a lot of that. Osiris & Seth and Seth & Nara? They is sooo much chemistry, but also betrayal...even hate perhabs. The plot sucked you right in and it has a unique magic system that keeps you entertained. Easiest 5 star.
Our lovely characters have been thinking with their brain instead of their hearts for a long time now, but slowly they start to crack. Will this be their downfall?
The Cage of Chaos is a dark and gothic fantasy romance that had me hooked. Nara is searching for answers about her past when she discovers the truth...her soulmate Seth is the one responsible for her greatest tragedy. Their bond is intense, messy, and impossible to ignore. Add in Osiris, dangerous secrets, and gods’ powers, and this book is full of drama, betrayal, and passion. It’s haunting, romantic, and addictive....I didn’t want to put it down.it was dark, and emotional. and i truly enjoyed it.
thank you so much untold stories PR all opinions are my own ❤️
This book was quite good. It was just a slow read for me this time around. But I liked it. Seth and Nara are just beautiful. Osiris too. I love the love triangle and tension between characters. The ending left me wanting more and more. I can’t wait for the second book and to experience what happens next. I really want them all to end up happy and loved. I adore the relationship between Nara and Seth so much. It was just beautifully written and so full of emotions. This book just makes me so emotional and full of excitement. I love every part and wish it was just longer.
Wren writes with so many highlight-worthy lines filled with angst and devastation. The careful world building made the story feel immersive—so many small and thoughtful details, without any overwhelming info dumps.
Read if you like: messy relationship dynamics and love triangles, dark academia and gloomy rainy gothic vibes, tension and angst galore.
ARC Review-this is a voluntary review and all thoughts are my own. I really enjoyed the build of this story and the development of the characters. You really learn so much about them and the importance of perspective by the end of the book. And I think it has you considering your own areas of chaos and destruction.
This book had magic and mystery with a gothic feeling undertone. Nara the FMC is an orphan looking for answers about her past. She connects with Seth the broody MMC to have him help her. He has his own issues (specifically their names are chaos and Osiris). I really liked how snarky Nara was. I enjoyed this book. After the cliffhanger though, I’m excited to read what happens in the next book.
I loved this story - the chemistry and banter between the MCs was great. We have Nora, the FMC, and Seth and Osiris, her MMCs. In the advance version it was sometimes difficult to figure out the POVs, but the chapter headers are present in the final released version, which should help with that.
The Cage of Chaos: Prose? Delicious Vibes? Immaculate Setting? moody, dark academia, it rains a lot, it’s perfect Characters: Osiris is babygirl and I will not be taking any further questions on the matter The romance? Equal parts swoonworthy and heartbreaking The ending? How dare you? Infinite stars.
