Magic always comes at a price. The price may seem small. It may cost a small prick of pain, blindness to a colour, deafness to a sound, or an emotion left in a void. Knowing the price allows us to understand where our lives end, and our deaths begin.
- Words from the Oracle
Bennett Jones has been an outcast his entire life, especially after the death of his sister. Despite the use of medication to control his panic attacks, he studies to make his mark in the world and attends the same university as his high school crush. Finally, the fruits of his labour pay off and he moves to Edmonton, Alberta, but nothing goes as planned. He’s attacked and chased by demons who want his soul. Cornered, he finds unfamiliar help from his playboy jock roommate, Chet Harrington, and a family that holds more power than the eye can see.
Fides parit fortis familia. Loyalty breeds a strong family.
The Cervantes family are Sentinels, born and raised with magic to protect the mystical and fantastic. Due to Bennett’s inexperience with his talent, the Cervantes family persuade him to live and train with them as their Ward as they discover the truth behind his power and why demons want him. Between the lines of devotion and danger, there is only one run or prepare for battle.
A legend has begun. It is time to unfold its secrets.
Legends are real - and Bennett has found himself right in the middle of one.
This is a phenomenal introduction to a massive world that promises redemption, sacrifice, self-discovery, sarcasm and witty remarks, and a feast for all the slow burn lovers. A remarkable world that blends the unique charm of Chmilar's creative touch and the modern setting of the every day life. From fast food takeout to fighting hellhounds on the football field, this is a story I promise you'll fall in love with.
What a particularly love about this story is how relatable and real the characters are. In a world saturated in shallow characters in cliche book settings, Solum is a refreshing take on what it means to be a hero - and what it costs to become one.
Solum is an entertaining urban fantasy debut packed with magic, humor, and engaging "found family" dynamics. While the pacing felt a bit uneven, the strong character chemistry and relatable touches made it a fun read. I would have loved more world-building depth, but overall, it’s a lighthearted and engaging start to the series.
A multiple POV in third person, revolving about Bennet, who didn’t know he possessed magic until now.
The Cervantes family takes him in as their ward and his journey with discovering the Arkana world commences. Throw in a push and pull with Emilia amongst battling demons and a romantic tone is set.
I really enjoyed the setup, the 90's paranormal vibe and distinction between Arkana and Norkana.
