The problem was me. The whole time. She has pretty common female self-esteem issues but I have something much worse... I am a black hole.

I have I'm Different disease. I can't just lay on the couch with you and watch Netflix because entertainment is for losers and I am not a consumer I'm a creator.

I'm sorry I come home so late and don't call and I never show you my writing any more so really you don't even know me but I assure you I'm cooking up something big. Something no one has ever made before. Something different.

the quote above basically sums up the book. WBE is a black hole; WBE has I'm Different disease. he is a handsome, fit, clearly intelligent white guy in his mid-20s who has a beautiful asian girlfriend who loves him and a hobby he is successful at (gaming), and yet he is dying inside. despite having friends and being a people-pleaser, he hates being around people. he hates his job. his life has no meaning and he assumes everyone is as empty inside as he is. most relevant to the book, he's a sex addict. frequent porn consumption has apparently twisted up his sex drive so thoroughly that he needs pharmaceutical help in order to perform well. he regularly hooks up with prostitutes, both from the street and via massage parlors, he regularly hooks up with women he's met online and at gaming conventions, he blogs all about it, often in pornographic detail, on his substack. he is the Generation Z version of Dostoevsky's Underground Man, with the same amount of self-loathing, misogyny, utter self-absorption, and egomania as that character. he considers himself worthless except for his entertainment value; his assessment is correct.

this is the second time I've referenced Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground in less than a month. after not thinking about that unpleasant experience for years. must be something in the air.

is this autofiction? I've seen that subgenre referenced many times in recent years but have never bothered to really try and understand it. I've always assumed it was a continuation of the frequently postmodern, very personal and very avant-garde "New Narratives" that dominated my 90s, books that blurred fiction and nonfiction and were often written by queer writers. (WBE may not love that comparison.)

the positive: WBE is transparently honest about himself. he can be entertaining and sometimes even funny. but it is a certain kind of "entertaining": a reader will need to be able to appreciate a nihilistic sense of humor full of a particularly glum and annihilating sort of self-hate, as well as have the ability/interest in reading a series of completely excruciating and explicit personal blog posts, in order to "enjoy" this. "enjoy" and " entertaining" decidedly in scare quotes. does a person enjoy watching a car crash? are they entertained when visiting the scene of a crime?

the negative: WBE is not what one would call an enormously talented writer. he's not bad and he does have an interesting aesthetic - deadpan, without affect, with the occasional burst of borderline-hysterical emotionalism to spice things up from time to time - his writing can be compelling and it's always readable. I was reminded of Dennis Cooper (a New Narrative queer writer from the 90s - lol). but outside of that dry, rather chilly style - which sits uneasily alongside many instances of genuine vulnerability - there exists little else. no characterization (besides himself) and a palpable disinterest in other humans; no imagery to speak of; no themes being developed outside of a basic My Life Is Shit; nothing to connect with on either an intellectual or an emotional level. this is a diary being written for public consumption but offering very little in the way of details, motivation, backstory; there is not much for the reader to contemplate. and yet I was hypnotized from beginning to end. and I felt sorry for him in a way that I never felt for Underground Man. does WBE yearn for pity?

perhaps my pity is due to that honest vulnerability, and to the surprisingly wistful quality to some of WBE's reveries, a wistfulness that is ever-present, even in sections with titles like "Slut Review: Katie from Hinge." I have a kind of empathy for WBE, despite empathy rarely being something that WBE himself is capable of. poor kid, he's all fucked up and he's fucking other people up with his fuckupedness. all of which he carefully notes.

the book details what is essentially a Part 1 of WBE's horrifying life adventures. there are two more parts available on his two substacks. the second part is a lengthy sequence of posts that take place after he has abruptly broken up with his long-suffering girlfriend and quit his job, as he travels across the country in his van, having sex with girls who have reached out to him after reading his blog, and actually having his heart broken by one such girl. this part is an utterly joyless but still absorbing road trip. there is now a third part which is still in-process: after coming full-circle during his van-life travels, he flies/flees to the Philippines (of course) where he has sex with more women via more massage parlors and more online connections. there was the occasional interesting but hard to read insight on filipino culture. trans women make an appearance and it doesn't end well (for him). there is a night out with a male fan that he met online that may be the only genuinely happy event that I've ever read by him. WBE left the Philippines for Japan, where more grueling adventures ensued. he now apparently intends to live in NYC (of course). I hope he can make a life there but I sorta worry for him.

there is a comment he makes in this third part that somewhat encapsulates his utter self-absorption and illustrates the issue that blocks him from being a genuinely good writer: namely, his mystifying lack of curiosity. the solipsism can be enervating.

It is hard to get a good read on the average native filipino, I haven’t been here long enough or talked to enough people. I have this belief that like, talking to an uber driver or something is just a depressing waste of time. Or, would be. I would say hey what do you like about Cebu? What are your favorite restaurants? Beaches? Where should I go to meet girls? He won’t know. or he’ll give me the most basic tourist bougie spots, double the price of the places he goes. it sounds classist and mean i know but i don’t want the input of a person who drives for uber in the Philippines making 14 dollars a day. then again i could just ask better questions. i just feel there’s not much he could say that could ever surprise me. And that’s approximately how I feel about dates with the girls, too.

the book is a morose and frustrating read but it did give me a grim sort of insight into the almost defiant despair and misanthropy present in many Zoomer men. is this a generation of apathetic manchilds? which is a deeply sad thing to contemplate. especially when I compare his 20s to my own contrastingly vibrant 20s, a decade where life was fully lived - for me at least. (and not to brag! honestly I assumed my experiences were typical experiences.) this was overall a depressing experience... but it was undeniably fascinating too. I also enjoy reading horror novels.

I read Worst Boyfriend Ever's "book" in one sitting in the waiting room of a veterinary clinic where I dropped a grand to find out my cat was constipated. "Book" in quotes because it is quite literally an amalgamation of notes app entries, the majority of them lasting 3 paragraphs or less. It was the first book I finished in 2026 which is nauseating, but my attention span is semi-fucked because of Twitter, et. al. Which is obviously how I stumbled across WBE in the first place, specifically his thread about manipulating his way into Japan. Like who just drops the phrase "the first girl I had to rape, back in Oregon" with no context? Guess that was a deep cut for the real WBE fans?

Sometimes it's good for a young woman to remind herself of the myriad ways men can be covert sickos. It's why we like true crime so much and it's why the birth rate is declining. I think this book may have cured my addiction to sad-looking white boys. Maybe.

How many such sad-looking white boys have read or will read this and idolize this artless perv? One is too many. This guy is the anemic Andrew Tate, except he probably fucks more because he has hair and might be over 6 feet tall (dubious though, as WBE offhandedly mentions wearing heel lifts, L.O.L). I'd feel a sick sort of pity for him if it wasn't so obviously one of his angles of attack. Imagine being an adult male and putting Shinji on the cover of your book.

WBE is a girlfriend's worst nightmare and I sort of commend him for making it this far without being doxxed. Thank fuck he's an ocean away or I might be spooked into celibacy considering he formerly resided in the godless pacific northwest. Wait, I'm only barely Asian, so I think I can mark myself safe.

Anyways, this book is a meditation on how far down the gooner rabbit hole one man go before outing himself as a rapist on Twitter. Wish I could get my $20 back but I'm likening this experience to buying cocaine- an objective bad that tips my afterlife scale more in favor of eternal torment but only slightly, and I had a modicum of fun doing it so it can't be that bad, right? Looking forward to betting dogecoin on his downfall in six to eight months.

A self published novel, that is a compilation of posts from a substack blog; the blog appears to me to be a product of a very misogynistic, radical right wing side of x.com, which I do not abide.

The book is very bigoted.

I found the experience of reading it compelling as I'm interested in contemporary male loneliness, and radicalisation, and it represents a first hand account from inside that mindset.

In general I'm drawn to semi-autobiographical works about depressed men being horrible people and ruining their lives , but maybe this is a bad thing.

FULL DISCLOSURE: WBE has been somewhat of a special interest of mine for the past month or so. This book provides nothing as interesting at the free stuff you can read on his substack, a lot of the chapters even being free content you can read on his substack.

If you’re a normal, good person don’t read this at all.

Worst Boyfriend Ever has been sitting on my TBR for a while. Is it ironic that I finally picked it up right after I learned what “cum sharking” is? Maybe. I actually don’t know what “irony” is. Alanis Morissette really did ruin the concept for an entire generation.

I kept waiting for this book to show me what it was. Was it satirizing misogyny? Internet masculinity? A chronically online generation? Gooning at the gym? I genuinely couldn’t tell. None of the ugliness ever felt examined. It mostly just felt like the book was content to wallow in it. Then I checked out the Substack. Jesus, take the wheel.

Around the 70% mark, I tapped out and let a robot finish reading it to me. I don’t care. Judge me if you must, but I just learned that you can get an STI in your eyes… and Worst Boyfriend Ever just wasn’t worth the risk. 😅

Pick up this book because of BAP

If you have a love/hate relationship with woman and you're NOT a homosexual, this book is made for you.
Beware, there isn't an actual comprehensible "plot" to this book, the whole book is literally him just cheating on his girl with Asian qt3.14s, so think of it as more as a memoir, if every entry was just him talking about how he wants to fuck every 6/10 Asian girl he came across, or him just listing his regrets and hating his life.

Overall a decent book if you want a glimpse into the dating scene of the American pacific northwest, as a Floridian, this was especially interesting.

For someone to write about kind of distasteful autobiographical stuff so well as to probably make you hate him is a great skill -- and "Worst Boyfriend Ever" accomplishes this quite successfully.

I have no real idea what dating culture is like among "the youth" these days, but if this story is relatively accurate for some subset of them...wow.

I think all sensitive young men go through periods of feeling the urge to annihilate themselves and everything around them - circumstantially, not in a violent way - and you have to either choose to follow the feeling or push it away. I don’t think either option is necessarily better than the other, it’s just a matter of your personality. I feel it sometimes too, I don’t think it ever goes away, it just comes and goes in waves.

A white guy with an asian fetish that brags about raping women. Groundbreaking.

Its embarassing for us as a society that anyone can get their 5 seconds of fame.

1.5 stars because I found his delusion that he has anything of worth to put out in the world hilarious.

“Worst Boyfriend Ever: A Sensitive Young Man,” is a coming-of-age novel written by a sad young man with no direction in life. It’s peak Americana for young urbanites living in the 21st century. It’s a little entertaining watching this guy hate on so many people while at the same time lacking any modicum of self-awareness himself. His inability to face up to his own prejudices while at the same time living in a diverse metropolitan area, alongside the daily stresses of city life (plus the porn addiction) no doubt exacerbated his pre-existing dopamine deficit. Also— Asian fetish. Why? Asian fetishes in white men are, in my experience, strongly correlated with mental illness, age regression, and slight pedophilic tendencies. All in all, fascinating in an academic sense, but I could only read this book once.

2/5 — You’re not special, you’re just an exhibitionist.

I can’t tell if it made me uncomfortable because it was bad, or because it reminded me of how I used to act/ feel/ write. we’re all nineteen at some point or another — looking for pieces of ourselves in other people.

Kind of hated how much I enjoyed reading this. This is not a good book. He is not a good person. When a car crashes, I generally don’t look away. Devastatingly entertaining read. I might consider him as a modern day Kafka if he had a porn addiction and the guts to quit his job.

guilty pleasure read. REALLY doesn’t hold up when you read it all in one big session. Works better as a Substack blog that you read every few days. Kind of an awful writer.
