I’d been looking forward to returning to Barra, and I wasn’t disappointed. Margaret Amatt creates beautiful settings, and I find them easy to picture and always wish I could visit. This time, she added in the sounds of the wind and sea, and I was instantly transported to school music lessons and hearing Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave for the first time. A theme I could hear as I read this gorgeous book.

This time, we revisit Ruaridh Griffin, a character that we met in book 1, who was crying out for his own story to be told. His personality gives pure book boyfriend vibes, and his description only adds to the attraction. His loyalty to his family and friends was a huge green flag, and I was immediately invested in his desire to find happiness.

Lottie Ashford is beautifully imagined, and I found myself picturing the diminutive firecracker, Nicola Coughlan. Extra smug points when she was referenced as part of the story. She arrives on Barra, escaping a terrible embarrassment, determined to put distance between her experiences and her quest for a fresh start. As the details of her situation came out, I felt drawn to her and hoped she would be able to heal.

In a change from Margaret’s Glenbriar style, this is more of a slow-burn romance, and I found it achingly romantic, yet I wanted to hurry the story along. I should have trusted this fabulous author because she got the pace exactly right, and on reflection, anything speedier would have felt disingenuous.

Now, I am waiting impatiently for Catriona’s story. I have my suspicions about where she may be heading, but I have learned never to try and second guess an author of Margaret Amatt’s calibre. She loves nothing more than a good plot twist.

Don’t worry if this is the first time you’ve come across Margaret’s books, because each one can be read as a standalone story, but prepare to seek out the rest of the series, as they are just delightful.

From the 1st two chapters I was completely invested in this book and hungry for more, could not put this book down, Margaret Amatt captures your attention from the offset, and has delivered yet another beautifully written story, the 2nd book in the Barra series, Lottie has ran away to Barra to restore a long lost family property to escape a scandal that is working it's way around social media and Ruaridh a Barra local is keeping a low profile after his scandal with a visitor nearly destroyed his sisters business, Ruaridh ends up helping Lottie to locate her long lost property and Barra weaves it's magic on Lottie, mixed with other great characters and not forgetting General Miaow, another fabulous read.

A welcome return to Barra and I can picture this beautiful, windswept island perfectly in my mind.
Ruaridh is an all round good guy but he’s had problems with a visitor before but he can’t resist Lottie who is staying at his sister’s B&B!
Lottie is hurting from upsetting events but soon finds herself relaxing into her new surroundings and she finds Ruaridh attractive!!!
A mystery to solve and a dreamy, slow burn romance made this an absolutely cracking book which I devoured in a day.

I so loved this story and the characters! When Lottie Ashford finds herself struggling after a career damaging mistake her mother suggests that she visits the island of Barra. Family stories say that her great grandfather had built a lighthouse there. With only an old key and nothing to lose Lottie finds herself on the Barra with thoughts of restoring the lighthouse ~ once she’s found it!
Ruaridh Griffin is a local who has been unlucky in love and vows to not get involved with anyone. Lottie is staying at his sister’s B&B and he finds himself offering to help Lottie find the lighthouse. What follows is a beautiful story about love, friendship, family and community, along with second chances and taking a leap of faith. I loved the interactions between the characters, particularly Lottie and Ruaridh. That sense that they both felt so misunderstood and were so worried about second guessing what others thought and what if it all went wrong really came through for me. Another brilliant story by Margaret and I’m waiting g in anticipation for the next one!
If you love a romantic story that has an engaging and meaningful storylines then I would highly recommend reading any of Margaret’s books. She is definitely one of my favourite authors!

Margaret Amatt never misses and she will melt her readers’ hearts yet again with The Lighthouse by the Sea.

Music teacher Lottie Ashford feels as if she lurches from disaster to another, so when the opportunity comes to take some time out of her life and go to the remote island of Barra to help restore an old family property- a crumbling lighthouse by the sea – she decides to take it. Romance is the very last thing on her mind, however, a chance encounter with local fitness Ruaridh Griffin has her experiencing feelings she never thought she’d feel ever again…

When it comes to affairs of the heart, Ruaridh always feels that he draws the short straw. When Lottie turns up at his sister’s B&B asking for directions to the lighthouse, he immediately offers his assistance and instantly begins to feel drawn to this beautiful stranger – even if he had sworn to never get involved with a visitor to Barra ever again. As he begins to spend time with Lottie, he quickly realises that he might be falling for her. But having had his broken once before, is he ready to take a chance on love? Or will his fears and insecurities end up costing him the opportunity to be happy again?

Barra soon weaves its magic on Lottie and she begins to feel at home. As her feelings for Ruaridh intensify, will she find the courage to put down roots in Barra? Or will she end up finding her happy ending elsewhere?

If you like Phillipa Ashley’s books, you are going to love Margaret Amatt. The Lighthouse by the Sea is a gorgeous romance full of heart and humour about second chances, new beginnings and falling in love I gobbled up like a slice of my favourite cake.

Tender, touching and absorbing, The Lighthouse by the Sea is another winner by Margaret Amatt.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My Opinion

The Lighthouse by the Sea is the second book in the Love on the Edge – Barra series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Margaret Amatt is an author that I always look forward to reading and The Lighthouse by the Sea definitely lived up to my expectations. With some lovely characters and a delightful setting this was a great novel. A quick and easy read.

The setting for this story was gorgeous, a small island that can be reached by a ferry. I loved that whilst it is quite secluded, the residents make it very homely. The weather though can be very hit and miss! Lottie has come to find out more about a family property that has been left to them. It isn’t quite what she is expecting when she finally finds it. She has gone there to get away and doesn’t bank on meeting someone. There is no wonder she is instantly attracted to Ruaridh. He is handsome, fit and just a genuinely lovely person. He is also dealing with his own stuff but the chemistry between them both is undeniable.

Being set in such a secluded setting, there aren’t a lot of characters but the ones we meet are wonderful and you can see what the attraction of living in a small place would be. It has a strong community feel and everyone helps each other out. I enjoyed the history around the family property and seeing things progress. It had me wanting to pack up my bags and move out there. Whilst it is ultimately a romance novel, it’s also about overcoming things in your past and not letting them define you.

The Lighthouse by the Sea will whisk you away to an idyllic location with the nicest of characters. Even though this is the second book in the series, having not read the first one, it easily reads as a standalone. The chemistry between Lottie and Ruaridh was addictive and when they overcome the mental obstacles, things certainly hotten up! It is a perfect blend of romance, humour and family. Prepare to be swept away by this heartwarming read!

✨ SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LOSE YOUR WAY TO FINALLY FIND THE LIGHT ✨

This was such a calming, easy book to fall into. Following Lottie as she arrives on Barra to renovate the lighthouse, you quickly see she’s there for more than just the job. With a little nudge from her mum, it’s exactly what she needs to slow down, find some calm, and re-evaluate her life. Along the way, she may even find love with the local boy, Ruaridh.

The pacing is on the slower side, but in the best way. It allows you to settle into the story and really feel the emotional moments without anything feeling forced or rushed. Lottie’s journey is gentle but meaningful, and the quieter pace gives her reflections and interactions real weight.

The lighthouse itself acts as a symbolic guide, mirroring Lottie’s slow but steady journey toward a brighter, more grounded life. It’s a lesson for us all that learning to let go and discovering that even messy beginnings can lead to something meaningful.

What stood out most was the soft sadness throughout, but it was balanced with warmth, humour, and hope. Watching Lottie gradually open up, build connections, and begin to feel more like herself again is satisfying without being melodramatic.

It was such a comforting story to lose myself in. I was left feeling calm and reflective. If you’re in the mood for a gentle, hopeful, and character-driven story, this one is a real treasure.

MY THOUGHTS -
A very enjoyable read!

The descriptions were absolutely wonderful—I truly felt like I was hiking up to the lighthouse right alongside them.

This is not your typical love story. It’s the best kind … because it’s so much more than that. There’s a lot going on throughout the story, and I found every bit of it completely fascinating.

I absolutely adored the characters. Lottie and Ruaridh, the two main characters, had so much depth. They each had their own backstories, and I really enjoyed taking my time getting to know them before falling in love with them. The secondary characters were just as great—especially Catriona. She’s very protective by nature, but also incredibly caring and loving, which made me love her even more.

Honestly, though, my favorite “character” in the whole book might have been the island itself! I felt completely transported there. The cottage, the lighthouse, the beach—everything about it just felt so vivid and wonderful.

This is my second one by this author. The other one was a Christmas read - Mix-Up Under the Mistletoe. The Lighthouse by the Sea is actually the second book in a series. Now I will HAVE to go back and read the first one! I think I'm in love!

Welcome to Barra

This second standalone book in the Barra series follows the story of Lottie, who is on Barra Islands, to see her great grandfather’s lighthouse and escape from an unwanted internet video. She meets Ruaridh, who is moving on from an untrue assumption about him.

I loved how relatable this was, especially in this present age where privacy isn’t respected and people would upload and share anything without concern for those involved.

This has several smaller elements/ lessons built in- music, assumptions, body positivity, baking and moving forward from past events.

I enjoyed the setting- the picturesque description of Barra and the surrounding islands. I love how accurate the unpredictability of the weather is.

I love the dual POV and short chapters which made for fast and easy paced reading. The slow burn and mutual pining were done just right.

A quick and easy read perfect for fans of small town romance and found family.

Lottie arrives in Barra with a family mystery to unravel and after an initial near miss with Ruaridh, she finds their paths crossing again when she stays in his sister's B and B. Lottie is at a crossroads in her life but finds Barra to be something of a healing place and the ideal place to make friends and consider her future. As Lottie finds out the truth about her ancestors, she has a decision to make but takes her time to look at her options.
The community seems to gather around Lottie, partly led by Ruaridh's efforts but it takes some time for them both to face up to their feelings. This is a warm and uplifting story, set in an idyllic place where the community all work together for the greater good. There are likeable characters and you can fully understand the quandary that Lottie finds herself in. Should she return to the city or stay and if the latter what would be her future?
In short: new friends and new beginnings

As a huge fan of Amatt's Glenbriar series I'm hoping the delights of Barra will become just as addictive.

What I didn't realise was that this is the second book in the Love on the Edge series. It was easily to read as a standalone but I'm not one for missing out, so I'm going back to the beginning.

I'm looking forward to becoming better acquainted with the residents of Barra and I'm sure there will be recurring characters throughout the series. Lottie and Ruaridh were both great characters in their own right. Both misunderstood but deserving of every happiness.

Easily enjoyable.

I would like to thank Rachel’s Random Resources and Margaret Amatt for the E ARC of this book.
This is the second book of the Love on the Edge series set on the Scottish Hebridean Island of Barra.
Lottie has come to Barra not only to escape but to solve the mystery of her Grandfathers claim to have been a Lighthouse Keeper on Barra and that he has a cottage there that can be renovated. Lotties Mum is really excited about this possibility for her daughter.
Lottie is staying with Catriona Griffin, when she mentions to her brother Ruaridh about the mystery he offers to help Lottie. The more time they spend together, the more they are drawn to each other. Lottie is feeling more and more at home in Barra but can she make a life for herself?
I really enjoyed this story, great characters and a good plotline. I also appreciate that one of the characters not only shares my name but also has the same chronic condition that I do. You don’t necessarily have to have read book 1 in the series before reading this one, but you do meet characters from the first book and catch up with their story, which I love.
Margaret Amatt has done a lot of research about Barra, the Lighthouse and life on the island, which as a Scot I really appreciated. I look forward to book 3.

This book is the second book in the Love on the Edge – Barra series by Margaret Amatt. The first book was The Castle in the Bay (click on the link to read my review). Although some of the characters feature in the earlier book, The Lighthouse by the Sea could easily be read as a standalone.

I adored the location, an idyllic part of the island with nothing between the coastline and Canada but wide blue ocean. Lottie had to search for the property her mother believed she had inherited, with help from Ruaridh, and I really enjoyed the way they worked together to put together the pieces of the story in order to locate the property.

I loved Lottie as a female character, she had been through so much, which had forced her to review what she actually wanted from life. She was such a kind and caring person who had faced total humiliation after going viral, and she was intent on protecting herself while trying to find a fresh start. The description of her made me picture a small curvy blonde like Sabrina Carpenter or Nicola Coughlan, but lacking in confidence under the belief that people would not find her attractive. Her connection to Ruaridh was instant, but it was a deliciously slow burn of a romance because having both been burned by their pasts, they were simultaneously drawn to one another but also determined not to act on it out of fear.

It was so refreshing that as soon as Lottie found out what Ruaridh did for a living, she was immediately able to see his job as a positive, in spite of Ruaridh being embarassed to admit what he did for a living. I loved the way she was able to help him realise that there was nothing to be embarassed about because he was providing a valuable service for the community.

I loved the way this story developed, it was such a soothing read, with a relaxed pace to the story but also the location and the romance felt similarly relaxed. It felt effortlessly romantic, and was a much needed feel-good read. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, which I am hoping might be Catriona’s story.

Even though I hadn't read the first book in the series, I still enjoyed the book and soon understood what was going on. I found the story beautifully written and easy to follow with good pacing. I also loved the place settings in the story and there was a great cast of characters. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author.

Lottie's run away to the island of Barra to avoid a scandal and find a long-lost family property. Ruaridh's a local who's sworn off any entanglement with visitors after his own scandal nearly destroyed his sister's business. But when he decides to help Lottie in her quest, he can't help but be drawn to her.

The Lighthouse by the Sea is a beautifully written story which is achingly gentle and sweet, whilst also dealing with difficult subjects. As well as Lottie and Ruaridh, there are a host of fabulous characters, everyone from Jock to Chairman Miaow. The island of Barra is also a character in the book and drawn so vividly by Amatt that it felt like I was there.

I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for more from Barra!

'The quiet between then stretched out like the ocean.
Finally, he turned and looked at her. She trembled under those smouldering eyes.
"Anything for you."
His voice was low, almost swallowed by the wind.
But she heard it and her breath caught in her throat.'
