The Murders At Algiers Point

Rate this book
“Beware the shadows, be afraid of the dark, that noise you hear behind you just might be me.”

Murder isn’t new to the Crescent City or the NOPD’s 11th District detectives. However, when Detective Sergio Miraglia stepped into his first homicide investigation, he found he was unprepared.

When a local reporter receives the killer’s haunting manifesto and decides to run it in the morning’s edition, panic consumes the city held captive by its words of fear.

Now, as more bodies are discovered in the peaceful, idyllic neighborhood of Algiers Point, the investigation intensifies. The pressure on the young detective threatens to unravel his life, pushing him to the edge as he hunts down the serial killer known as C0DA.

Charles Bodenheimer is the author of the unpublished chapter, OMELET. It is the rewritten final chapter of HAMLET. In the chapter, Omelet is an egg awaiting his beating.

True story. In tenth-grade English, while reading Hamlet, Charles had the bright idea to change the ending. It got a great laugh from his friends. Unfortunately, he no longer possesses the book, but can only imagine the face of the person who was assigned that book for the next year. He hopes they enjoyed it as much as he did.

Charles has continued his passion for writing with the Detective-Noir-Giallo book series called THE CRESCENT CITY UNDERGROUND. The first book in the series, THE MURDERS AT ALGIERS POINT, was his debut novel. Currently, he is working on the second book in the series titled A DAME CALLED HUMIDITY. His latest book is the horror novella, THE NIGHTINGALE PROJECT.

Charles lives in New Orleans with his wife, Ilyssa, son Aeryn, and their three furry kids: Elsa Blue, Haku, and Kiki Doots.

He has spent the better part of his life writing short stories, scripts, and directing films (both short and feature-length) before answering the call to write… Now, you be the judge if the call was a wrong number or not.

This book pulls you in from the first line and doesn’t let go. The writing is sharp, atmospheric, and rich with a sense of place—you can feel the humidity, hear the city’s heartbeat, and practically smell the French Quarter. It’s unmistakably New Orleans, and that authenticity gives the story real weight.

The plot moves with purpose, building tension with every chapter. There’s a clear arc that keeps you grounded, even as the twists begin to stack. And just when you think you’ve figured it out—boom—the ending knocks the wind out of you.

Detective Sergio Miraglia is a standout. He’s complex and deeply human, and by the end of the book, you feel like you know him. His journey, both professional and personal, makes the stakes feel that much higher.

If you're a fan mystery/murder/thriller with strong characters, smart pacing, and a vivid setting, this one's absolutely worth the read.

I started this book as a long time resident and lover of NOLA. I am pleased to report that this book nailed the feel of New Orleans. The story was fast paced and I constantly wanted to know what Coda was going to do next. The pacing was perfect for a thriller and the length was perfect for a weekend read. If you like mysteries and you enjoy being caught completely off guard this read is for you.

A great story of a young Officer promoted to a Detective thrown into a case of a “wanna be” serial killer, all while navigating “this” mind of C0DA; “who is this Being and what is He thinking”.

The story grabs you from the beginning leaving you wanting to turn the next page and tossing with “should I sleep now or just one more chapter”.

What a phenomenal read. The city comes alive with such vivid detail that it feels like a living, breathing presence in the story. The characters are richly drawn, full of depth, contradictions, and humanity, and the plot unfolds with sharp, deliberate twists that keep you locked in. Highly recommend giving this one a try. I’m genuinely excited to explore more of Bodenheimer’s writing.
