How would you like the given name Farrah? Exactly! That's why Farrah decides to go by her middle name, Jane, when she starts at Colorado University. Colorado was as far as she could get from her family. By using Jane, no one could possibly figure out that she is part of the THAT Morris family.

Everything is going along perfectly for Jane. She even had a real conversation with Hot Connor the last day of the semester. Though that only happened because they collided into each other after finals. But now, she's off to River Lodge to attend her brother's wedding. Of all the places he had to choose to get married, it had to be in her safety state of Colorado. Well, Jane plans to make the best of it, not really understanding why her brother, Jonah, would choose to marry Marni Shay, besides her being rich and famous. At least Marni has a cool younger sister, Biff (her real name is Buffy, but don't you dare call her that!), that Jane immediately bonds with.

What can possibly go wrong? Of course, the reader knows that something has to happen. And that turns out to be that Hot Connor WORKS at River Lodge. He actually seems pleased to see Jane. But that's probably because Biff told him that the two girls are nannies for some rich family. Not quite true, of course. Jane's family's wealth represents all that Connor resents.

So now, Jane has to pretend she is the nanny to her two younger brothers whenever Connor might be around. As can be expected, things don't always turn out the way that she wants. Jane has to juggle wedding preparations, avoiding Connor at the wrong moments, and being extra-attentive to her younger brothers as a front for her deception.

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Harrison, but it definitely won't be my last. Jane was a lot of fun and the misfortunes she finds herself in are very comical, but point out the problems when you don't tell the truth from the beginning. One small lie builds into a waterfall of lies that soon create a disaster for Jane. Only by coming clean does she have any hope of a happy ending.

This is a fun read about a girl who becomes the “best girl” in her brother’s winter wedding. However, she finds herself falling in love with a boy who works at the location of the wedding and is determined to impress him. I enjoyed reading about all the wedding prep and the strong bond between the main character and her brother. Despite all this, I was very frustrated with the main character. She feels as though she has to change herself to be likeable, and the whole relationship between her and Connor is based on lies. The story is still interesting, though, and I didn’t hate it.

So.... It was a nice read. I couldn't even put the book down. But the characters..... Well, I just didn't see what Jane/Farrah saw in Connor. He was annoying, superficial, biased, and a bit of a jerk at times. So, yeah, I didn't like him much.
I wasn't a huge fan of Jane/Farrah either. Well, some times I liked her, most of the time I wanted to throttle her. She was a walking contradiction. She's all like "Oh my god, my skin is so dry from the cold!" and then when her mother says she should use a treatment at the spa to take care of that problem, Farrah felt insulted. Seriously?! And that's just one of many things that pissed me off about her.
Farrah's mother was just terrible. I wanted to beat her unconscious. Seriously. I changed my mind a little about her towards the end. Well, it took her long to realize her mistakes, but she made it eventually.
Biff was ok, I like her some times, I didn't like her much at other times.
And then, we come to my favorite character. Jonah. Best. Brother. Ever. I loved him. And that scene at the wedding after Farrah spilled the beans about Tommy? Just. Amazing. I wanted to clap my hands and cheer for him. I liked Jonah even more then. He was an awesome guy and brother.
Marni was a really nice girl too, surprisingly.
So, all in all a good read. But didn't like much the main characters.

Clearly, I should've judged the book by the cover.
Jane's infatuation with Connor is the kind in which she acts like a total flustered dork. She's a college kid and her brother's wedding is taking place over uni holidays. Her brother's her best friend and they're super close and she's not looking forward to the wedding. It's gonna be a big bash. She feels that all that self-confidence that she built up over the semester might fade away in the face of the glitz and the glamour of a socialite wedding. I liked Jane's multi-dimensional assessments. She was dreading seeing her fashionable mother, but when she actually does see her, she finds that she's missed her. Jane's not into dresses and girly things. She's more the practical type. Everything was going fine until Jane started acting like a 14 year old girl.

Read on Nov. '12, reviewing on Oct. '13:

This was a fun and light read.

The main protagonist Farrah goes to an Ivy league college if I remember it properly and has a crush on a guy over there. The vacation's are starting and she is preparing herself for her most favorite person in the world - her brother's over-the-top filthy rich marriage. As getting married in a church is too mainstream, they'll have to arrange it in a 5 star hotel, where as she finds out, her crush Connor works. Mortified about the way Connor thinks about the hotel stayers, Farrah lies saying she's working there as well.

While Connor was portrayed as the nice guy, why does he think all rich people are dumbos and spoilt brats? And Farrah couldn't stop thinking about her looks and is still adamant to keep a tomboy. You don't get to choose that girl. You are either a tomboy or you're not, and from the looks of it, you're just pretending to be one. Not cool.

I liked the setting as I could actually kind of feel the Winter. I liked the girl (Forgot her name) who's the bride's younger sister. Being Farrah's age, she definitely knows how to carry herself unlike Farrah.

Probably 2.5 stars

I chose not to round up because I don’t like books where the main character lies all the time. I guess “Jane” didn’t outright lie - she went along with someone else’s lie - but I still didn’t like it.

Speaking of didn’t like it, I wasn’t a fan of Connor at all. He seemed really judgmental and honestly quite rude. She called him “Hot Connor” so i guess she was more interested in his looks than his personality?

What I DID really enjoy were the interactions between Farrah and her brother. They were really cute and I loved the bachelor party she came up with for him.

This book was cute and an easy read. It fell victim to a lot of annoying tropes. The plain Jane being one, which is even better because she chooses to go by the name Jane. She always complains about how ugly she is, but obviously she's actually super incredibly beautiful and everyone knows it but her. Instalove, sort of. Spoiler alert, at the end of the book they're declaring their love for each other, and I thought, "Okay, calm down, you've been going out for a week."

I also wasn't a huge fan of Connor, to be honest. He was judgemental and a little rude and yeah, a little mean, too. I wasn't entirely sure what Jane saw in him.

Still, the book was cute. Though I was more into the storylines with Jane and her brother Jonah as well as her relationship with her mom. The romance was sort of secondary to me, which is strange. Overall, definitely not the best of these cute romance books, but not the worst either.

This I where I want a re-reading button and the chance to rate each reading individually: While I thought "The Best Girl" was really fun when I bought and devoured it in 2008, the light rich-girl-pretends-to-be-a-nanny-to-snatch-the-working-class-boy chicklit romance for the young adult audience turns out to be slightly boring and nerve-damaging when you already know what is going to happen. I still love the winter scenery in the lush resort and the holiday feel and I still like the heroine, but I cannot bring myself to want to finish reading. "The Best Girl" is best enjoyed in the first go it seems.

2nd reading: January 30th 2011 (100 pages), unfinished, 2 stars.

This book is a fast read. It's written wonderfully. I can relate with the main character who were a bit tomboyish. Great charcters all around. Emma Harrison managed not to make the characters to be a cliche like some of the usual chicklit novel's propensity.
Story wise though there is nothing new. The usual chick lit formula. Girl has a crush. Unexpectedly meets the guy she crushes on. Stupidly lies. Gets found out. Forgive each other and live happily ever after. The end.
My only problem and for me it's a huge flaw is that this relationship between Farrah/ Jane and Connor started with a lie. This really annoyed me because that lie is pointless. That lie was so flimsy and weak. Jane should have never done it and at any point Connor could have found it out easily. (At least if you told a lie, make it a strong believable one and only when necessary). Besides that, I just thought Jane was better ot more mature than that stupid lie. That lie colored my enjoyment of the story onward and that's why I'll give it 3.5 stars.

I loved this book! The story is just so funny and original I couldnt put it down. I recommend this book to all who love romantic comedies. Jane is a real girl that many can identify with. I really like that Jane was an older girl in college and not the typical 16 year old experiencing her first love, cause thats how it was for me. This was book was light hearted and wonderful to read. I cant wait to read another novel by Emma Harrison.

I randomly found this book in my basement, and the Universe must have known I was looking for a cheesy read! I devoured this book in just a little over 2 hours.

Yes, it's definitely cheesy and predictable. But it's also fun. I enjoyed Farrah, Biff, and Jonah. Usually I'm a little nervous to read quick contemporaries like this because I find that there can be a lot of problematic aspects to it, but I didn't see as much in this one.

I liked Farrah's relationships with both Jonah and Biff. They were wholesome. I also ended up liking her mother by the end, she redeemed herself after being a jerk and low-key emotionally abusive (that's absolutely a stretch, but you get what I mean).

There were a few things I didn't enjoy though.

Firstly, I thought the whole aspect of Farrah are her being a tom-boy/girly and that internal struggle just seemed a little off. It made me feel bad for her sometimes, but it also just didn't feel super necessary to the story. There was also that classic trope (which Biff even recognizes) where Farrah can't see how beautiful she is. I thought Farrah was very true to an 18 year old girl in regards to insecurities and what not, but she did feel confident at one point. Then she sort of let Connor crush that for her at times.

The main thing I didn't like about this book was the romance. Connor is such an asshole. First of all, he's misogynistic and judgmental then retracts any poor statement he made just so he can be on good terms with Farrah. He also is just trash enough that Farrah feels like he won't accept her for her, so she lies about who she is to him in hopes that he'll like her more. Not to mention, there's nothing cute about him. I like reading these books to swoon over the love interest, but this guy was such a jerk. I didn't understand why Farrah was so obsessed with him, she could do so much better. I hated that she ended up picking him in the end, even though we all knew that would happen.

Also, at the end they declare that they love each other?! After like, two weeks? And he's a jerk? And he just found out she had been lying to him the whole time? What?

Overall, this contemporary romance read was super quick and went better for me than most do. It's a cute wintry read, as long as you don't go into expecting to love Connor, because you won't.

"The Best Girl" by Emma Harrison was originally published by HarperCollins, HarperTeen, in 2008. But, I just came across this particular book. The title, "The Best Girl" is in reference to the fact that Farrah is going to be her brother’s best man at his wedding. Rather than be the best man, she is the best girl. After conquering her first semester at college, Farrah was obliged to visit her family for her brother’s wedding during her winter break. All she really wanted to do was go home and relax, but was coaxed into going to a ski resort with her future family in-laws.

Farrah thought her only problem would be helping with wedding plans and being Jonah’s best girl, but it turns out that her crush, Connor (or Hot Conner as she refers to him), is working at the lodge her family is staying at. Normally, it would not be an issue for someone’s crush to appear, but Farrah tried to create a persona for herself at school renaming herself “Jane.” Annoyed with the fact that her mother named her after a Charlie’s Angel, Farrah decided that she would rather be known as Jane. She even had her newspaper articles published under the name Jane instead of Farrah. Connor is unaware of the fact that Jane is not Farrah’s real name. Unfortunately, for Farrah, that lie inspires other lies.

This book had every bit of wintery fluff you'd expect from the description plus a couple defining moments that really dove into the character. There were times she'd dive into some third and fourth dimension characterizations (after she leaves her brother's room the night before the wedding - a real, honest, portrayal of human growth and connection) and you could tell it mirrored the mindset of a child-turning-adult-what-does-that-mean narrative. There were certain things I didn't quite understand in her journey (slight spoiler: is a guy saying you're pretty much a dude THAT big of an upset to cause all the kerfuffle it did? seems like a middle school flatlined taunt to me) and I hoped for a little more of that shining substance when everything wrapped up in the end, but the fluff carried it right through. Kind of wish she would have stood up to Tommy Whatshisface or her mother earlier, but I suppose that was part of her journey that she didn't until she was ready. Fun read, ate it up.

Farrah aka Jane, wants to start over in college and she finally has that chance. But it all comes tumbling down when Hot Connor is working at the same place where her brother is marrying one of the richest girls in the world.

I love the Young Adult romantic comedy mass market paper back books. They are some of the best books I have read, while they aren’t the most well written, the story lines are fun and they are super cute. This one was no different and I really did enjoy it.

Farrah/Jane is tomboy whose mom has been trying to push her to become the girly-girl she’s always wanted. But thats not what she wants, we get to see more of the mother-daughter dynamic through the book.

I also love the relationship between Jane and her brother, the two of them are close and stick by each other through everything.

If you’re looking for a fun novel about family, friendship, being true to yourself and all set in a cozy ski lodge, check this out!

I have nothing coherent to say about this book or why I liked it. I just did. I picked it because after reading several heavy books in a row, I needed something light & fun. It delivered. The love interest made me want to punch him in the face a few times, but I still stayed up past my bedtime to finish! If you're looking for something deep, this isn't it. But it's fun & sweet.

Basically, tomboy dreads having to get all frilly for a wedding. Convenient coincidences abound, things happen exactly as you expect them to, misunderstandings happen, etc. But it's cute!

Farrah is finally feeling comfortable in her own skin. After a semester at college, she has come to terms with her wild red hair, comfy sweaters, book nerd mentality and getting used toher new alter ego,Jane. But all of that may be short lived. Her brother is getting married over Christmas break, to an heiress to a clothing company bigger than Abercrombie.

Farrah isn’t much into preppy, prissy girls and she’s afraid of losing her brother, who is her best friend. But when she meets Biff AKA Buffy AKA the bride’s sister, Farrah’s worries start to fade. She won’t be alone this week in wonderland. But then when she runs into her college crush, things get shaken up. He’s an employee at the resort she is staying. She lies about who she is and gets deeper into the character of Jane. But they all may be jeopardized on the big wedding day, when all of the employees are on duty at the big wedding, where Farrah is the best girl (like the best man, but for a girl).

For the first time in a long time, I fell in love with characters. I’ve run across a lot of immature YA characters lately and some of them have actually pushed me away from YA. I know that it’s my choice to be an adult and read YA and I know the books are geared towards younger people, but every now and then, in books like these, my love is restored. Farrah, Jane, whatever you want to call her is a character I’d like to get to know better and see what happens in her future. She grows up in kind of a hoity-toity family, with a mom who just wants her to be pretty and girly, like all the other girls. But I appreciate Farrah for being who she wants to be, even if that does put her in the nerdstrom category. She does take to the girly side for a hot second, but realizes that you don’t always have to be dolled up to get the guy.

I love that lesson in a YA book. In high school, and even college, looks are always so important. I’m not sayng Farrah isn’t pretty, but she’s naturally pretty. She doesn’t need to spend hours on her hair and makeup and clothes to be pretty. There need to be more YA girls like that.

I’ve read a lot of books lately that have made me want to pack my bags and take a trip. After Anna and the French Kiss, I was ready to go to Paris. After this, I don’t care where I go, as long as I can sit in a cabin, but the fire and drink cocoa and watch the snow and skiers. I’m doing just that today, watching the snow out the window of my house, and although my tree is blinking and sparkly, there just seems to be something magical about a ski resort.

I give The Best Girl 4 bookmarks. As much as I loved it, I hated that Farrah lied throughout the book. There were so many times I wanted her just to come clean, but she kept the lies going. LYING IS BAD!

The Best Girl is a book that actually made me laugh because Farrah is her brother's best man. I didn't even know that was possible, but damn that's just so cute. They have that perfect brother-sister relationship that everyone is envious for. Sometimes I wish I had that kind of a relationship with my brother, but then I realise that our relationship is perfect in its own way. But whatever, this is where I get back to reviewing the book.
Farrah hates her name and everywhere outside her family she goes by her middle name, Jane. That's what Connor knows as her. He thinks she's that intimidating girl that everyone stays away from. But in reality she's really shy and unsecure about herself. She's very self-concious. And whenever she tried to be an actual girl, like dress and behave like one, he would tell her that she looks funny not realising how that makes her feel.
She also lied to him about her true self, but you know it's not her fault. She's not really a liar. It all became a game of lies when Connor caught her and Buffy eating cake in the hotel kitchen. Buffy didn't know what to do and just came up with that one lie, that was followed by many others, to save them and to not ruin Jane's chances with Connor, not knowing that it would get them into a mess where they had to lie to their families.
But the truth always comes out, and it becomes rough for everyone them. Farrah thought Connor hates her and he was just trying to come up with a way how to apologise to her. They both thought bad things about themselves, thinking that what they said and did defines their future relationship or the lack of it as it is. But in the end it all ends up good with both of them being happy.
This book is really easy to read, it just makes you turn page after page until you come to the last one. So if you want something light to read, to just rest your mind, this is the book you're looking for.

Another teen romance night for me! And my heart started to race whenever I think about it.
This one gripped me firmly and it refused to release me from the adrenaline rush! I love the characters created. We have Tomboyish Jane/Farrah, a socialite antagonist Connor, a hyped Biff, brotherly Jonah, materialistic Marni etc etc etc. Yes, it's teen romance, so it's always cliche, but I was caught off guard every single time.
I adore the fact that Farrah/Jane is someone who would fix her own mistakes and be strong at the same time. She do pity herself, but it's not exaggeratively. People picture her as a boy, and she does felt inscure when she meets other girly girls, still she wouldn't change herself for that (well, there was once). I feel her relationship with Connor developing, how both of them were shy but decided to make the move, as much as I think Connor is sweet, sometimes I find him to be a jerk because of the comments he made, nevertheless, he proved himself to be an understanding person.

And I totally admire Farrah's relationship with her brother, Jonah. They are literally twins! And they bond better than him and Marni, his wife. But I do like Marni too. And let's not forget our own Buffy, Biff. She's like the total rebel in the family, but she doesn't do drugs etc. She's so full of energy that sometimes you don't know what to expect from her.

The Best Girl was a fast paced, cute, romantic read. There are parts that made you reflect on yourselves, and there are parts that might make you teary (I'm very emotional), still...as all teen romance books goes, it has a happy ending:)

Hmm I'm not sure what to write about this one.

It was a beautiful story with a lot of wonderful personages.

I just loved Jonah and Farrah relationship(brother and sister). I'm an only child so when i read about them how close are they it is just beautiful. How they are each other best friends how they know one another so well. It just keep me wanting to have someone like that, with who I can talk and to be always by my side.

And Marni - Jonahs fiance she is so sweet and good. There is no way someone to not like her. And they love is so good explained and I really hope it really exist the true love. To be with someone for so long and still to feel like the first day you meet him. It is just so beautiful written. And in Christmas when everyone opened their gifts Marni just stood there and watch everyone opens his gift and smiled just watching them and Jonah watching her it was wonderful.

It was a great story.

And of course Farrah and Connor they are so sweet together but there wasn't enough of them in the book. But it was very nice written how they meet in all these places and how they fell for each other day after day. The only thing I didn't like was how Connor needed so much time to come and talk to Farrah and that he wasn't with her in New Year how he promised and left her alone. And how sad she was through the whole wedding and in the evening too. It just wasn't fear in one moment she is so happy and in the other she is alone and so sad and because of that she couldn't enjoy her brother's wedding.

It is a great story with wonderful story line and personges.

I go over this all the time, but these small books that literally only take a few hours to read are so freaking CHEESY! I love CHEESE! I know you don't really care about my obsession with cheese, but you know, these books are cheesy, in a good way, and I can't help but yelling it on the roof tops!

Anyways, just like any book before it I loved this one. It was fast, fun, full of that cheesy romance teenagers enjoy reading. Though, I guess now a days I can't count myself as one of those teenagers. I'm 19, sure, but I'm married with a daughter... I just don't feel right categorizing myself in that category. Regardless, these teen romances make me feel so giddy.

If you're looking for a fun Christmas/Winter book to read right around now I suggest picking it up. Your not going to get complex characters and a complex storyline. You can't really think about it all the much. You just have to sit back and enjoy the cheesy-ness of the story. If you like contemporary and you like simple books then this one's for you!

The characters are flat, and it's only because the book is so short. I don't know about you, but I don't want to waste my time getting to know a character when the book is reaching it's end. You know enough to know what they're like and that's enough for me. It's how the book stays simple. Same with the plot. Scenes aren't dragged out into detail because it's a small book you can pick up in one sitting. A book that will make you smile. Or even a book you can read a chapter here and there through December.

Simple review, for a simple, but fun, book :)

The Best Girl by Emma Harrison is a novel about a freshman in college, named Farrah. Her brother is marrying a celebrity named Marni Shay. She is playing a big part in planning the wedding, but also has to deal with adjusting to her and her high-maintenance family. The lodge that she stays in with both her family and Marni’s family is one of highest luxury and she soon finds out that her crush, Connor works there. Farrah is a really likable girl who tries to get to know Connor better, yet she also had to take care of her little brothers at the same time–which has proven itself to be a little bit of a challenge. Connor reveals that he thinks that Marni and her family are very snobbish and stuck up so Farrah pretends to not be apart of the ‘wedding party’ that has checked into the lodge. This makes things even more complicated as Farrah tries to be helpful to her family yet pursue a new relationship.

This books was super cute! I love the bond between the main character, Farrah, and her brother who is getting married, Jonah. They have a really close relationship that is just very sweet and enviable! Then of course, there is "Hot Connor"... Who is lied to by Farrah throughout the book but love prevails :) and preconceptions are dropped. Connor always held grudges against the rich people that didn't seem to have any worries in the world, but he learns after getting to know Farrah (well... he knows her as "Jane") that they aren't all necessarily snobs, and being judgmental really isn't the way to go. There are also good themes of honesty, and just being who you are... not trying to be someone else, and overall, just being an individual with your own personality that is not a lie/fake. Then of course, there is the power of lllluuuvvv <3 This is a good read and I totally recommend if you are looking for a charming book to delve into :D
