Ich hatte mehrere Bücher von Autismus für Dummies ("Understanding Autism for Dummies" gibt's auch, aber "Autism Spectrum for Dummies" scheint abgesägt worden zu sein) auf der Wunschliste, habe mich dann aber für diesen Band erschienen - er ist nämlich hochaktuell 2025 erschienen. Und das merkt man auch an der Sprache und Rücksichtnahme der Autorys. Es wird immer wieder betont, dass jede*r Autist*in anders ist, dass es verschiedene Präferenzen zu sensorischen Entlastungen, Sprachgebrauch und Entwicklungen gibt.



Von den 400 Seiten liest man allerdings nicht alle - es gibt die üblichen Kapitel über Kindheit und Jugend, Schulzeit und Uni, die ich übersprungen habe. Es folgen aber auch Kapitel zur Diagnose im Erwachsenenalter, das Tipps zur angenehmeren Gestaltung des Arbeitsplatzes und Gehaltsverhandlungen. Abschließend gibt es Kapitel für Lehrende, Eltern und Sozialarbeitende, die zum ersten Mal in Kontakt mit Autist*innen kommen und wie sie im Alltag unterstützt werden können. Also wirklich ein Rundumblick für alle Beteiligten. Am Ende gibt es zusammenfassend zwei Listen: 10 Kernpunkte des Autismus sowie 10 Punkte, um Autist*innen zu helfen.

Way more neuro-affirming than I expected and thrilled that this was written by autistic people. Only downside eBay that there was literally one sentence in the whole thing about gestalt language processing (it was called “scripting,” which is only one aspect). While this communication style isn’t exclusive to autistic people, it is how many autistic people develop language and not even one paragraph was spent on it. That being said, even in the therapist community it is rare for it to be included unfortunately. Everything else was great, highly recommend!

My youngest child was diagnosed with autism and this book provides a lot of insight, it’s just not that enjoyable to read.
