I received a copy from the publisher through Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
That cover caught my eye when I first saw it, it's so pretty and summer-y and then I read the blurb and was so excited to read this one. I started it shortly after I got approved for it. Hunter's Treasure follows Sydney as she ends up shipwrecked on an island, but it's not uninhabited, a guy named Hunter lives there and he believes there is treasure hidden on the island.
I thought the premise was so fun with the island setting and treasure hunt. Sadly this book didn't fully work for me. I never fully warmed up to Sydney although I did like her more as the story progressed. Hunter on the other hand was great and I liked how sure of himself he was and determined to find the treasure. I liked the treasure hunt and them figuring out the clues. I didn't like the bit of danger toward the end. Mostly it just felt like everything about this book was just okay and it never got better than that for me.
One of the things I liked most about this book was reading about such a sunny and summer-y island setting while we're going through winter here and I am struggling with seasonal affective disorder. That was the part I liked most, it was nice escaping to this sunny island for a bit every day.
The romance between Sydney and Hunter does develop relatively quickly, but I appreciated they took some time to get to know each other. There are also some fun little details like the actual notes they send each other that are in front of some chapters, which I liked. I wanted to like them together, but again it was just okay. I didn't fully feel their romance, but they were sweet together most of the time. I didn't really care for the bit of tension with Sydney wanting to leave the island and Hunter wanting to stay and they never really talk about it at all, both set in their ways. And then at the end it all gets resolved so quickly and it just bothered me. There is a bit of steam in this one, but it's not as spicy as I had expected form the blurb.
To summarize: I really wanted to like this book, but it ended up just being okay for me. I liked the island setting and the treasure hunt with them figuring out the clues. I never fully warmed up to Sydney, but I mostly liked Hunter. They were sweet together, but I didn't fully feel their romance. There is some tension about them both wanting different lives, but it got resolved very quickly at the end despite them not really talking about it and it dragging on for the whole book. The tropical island setting was so fun to read about while it's winter here and I am struggling with seasonal affective disorder and I think that's the thing I enjoyed most and what kept me reading.
Hunter’s Treasure by Olivia Jackson was such an enjoyable read. From start to finish, it kept me entertained and I never found myself getting bored, which is ALWAYS a win for me. The chemistry between the characters was really well done it felt natural, fun, and emotionally engaging, especially given their circumstances 🏝️✨
The romance did lean a little instalove-ish, HOWEVER it still worked because there was that lingering question of “do I actually like you, or are we just the only two people on this island?” which I really appreciated. That uncertainty made their connection feel more grounded and believable despite the fast attraction.
The only thing I wished for was more exploration after they went to the police about the treasure. I would’ve loved to see more detail about what happened next—how much the treasure was worth, their first night back at the island and just a bit more fallout from everything they went through. That said, the ending still wrapped everything up in a nice bow and felt satisfying overall 💛
This was a fun, engaging read with great character chemistry, and I’m really glad I got the chance to read it as an ARC. I’d definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy adventure, romance, and high stakes situations with heart.
I really enjoyed this rom-com adventure romp. It's perfect for fans of films like Romancing the Stone, Fools Gold and the Indiana Jones series, and just the sort of book to take on holiday with you (or help you daydream of adventures on a tropical island whilst surviving grey, rainy days). I would have liked to have a bit more insight into Hunter as a character - it's easier to get this when there's a dual POV, but I'm not averse to staying with just the single POV if the characterisation via observations/what we're shown works for me; this left me feeling like I wanted more. But while the romantic relationship perhaps lacked a little depth, I thouroughly enjoyed the read, and I think if you're looking for something fun, pacy and little different this is absolutely worth picking up!
I received this book as an ARC. This is my first book from Olivia Jackson, I read and I liked the book. On some instances it dragged on and it got boring. The treasure hunting, the slowness of the romance between the FMC & MMC, the "pirate robbers", the captain, ... all of that came too slow and then felt like the author was running out of time and remembered she needed to incorporate a bad character in the book. I liked how the ended up together but not in the island the MMC had inherited. Like the 3 year epilogue of them and she was expecting their baby. It was an airport read but not a book I would look for at Barnes & Noble to read.
This was such a fun read! Really love the treasure hunt and all the romance in this book! 10/10 would definitely recommend if you enjoy romance, comedy, and a little mystery. The two main characters I absolutely adored and it was a joy to get to know them.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy! All opinions are my own.
