The Rose and the Shadows

Rate this book
The past isn’t finished with her. But this time, she isn’t running.

Arden Rivers fought her way out of the dark once. She refuses to be dragged back in.

But when a masked attacker tears through the fragile peace she’s built, it becomes clear: the shadows of her past—and the enemies she never saw coming—are only just beginning to surface.

Beside her stands Gideon Blackwell, a man trying to rewrite the legacy of his name before it devours them both. As danger escalates and long-buried secrets rise, Arden and Gideon are forced to confront the truth about who they are, what they’ve survived—and what they’re still running from.

Some storms destroy.

Some storms cleanse.

And some... change everything.

The Rose and the Shadows is the gripping conclusion to the Storm and Shadow Duology—an emotionally rich, atmospheric novel about survival, power, obsession, and the quiet strength it takes to stand your ground when the world wants you silent.

T.L. Johnson

T.L. Johnson writes atmospheric fiction for readers who like their love complicated, their tension intimate, and their healing a little feral. Her work spans modern Gothic romance, psychological fiction, romantic suspense, literary fiction, and stories about survival, longing, obsession, and the dangerous tenderness of being known.

She lives in West Virginia with her husband, her complete opposite in nearly every way: an outdoorsy Southern gentleman with sunshine in his bones. Together, they’re raising their daughter, the bright planet orbiting between his light and her shadows.

Their household is ruled by four cats: two longtime monarchs—one elegant and black as midnight, the other a snow-white menace who thrives on chaos—and two former porch gremlins who have recently ascended to royalty, as cats tend to do.

She is also the founder of Midnight Haven Books, a mobile indie bookshop championing human-written stories and independent authors across genres.

A Stunning, Addictive Sequel You Won’t Be Able to Put Down

I received an advance copy of this book.

The Rose and the Shadows by T.L. Johnson is everything I hoped for and more. As the second book in the duology, it picks up exactly where book one left off and wastes absolutely no time throwing you straight back into the action. From the very first page, you are immersed, heart pounding, fully invested, and unable to look away.

This book is suspenseful, deep, raw, and thrilling in the best possible way. The characters are incredibly well developed, layered, and thoughtfully written. Their choices, flaws, and emotional complexity make them feel real, and at times frustrating in a way that only great storytelling can achieve. You feel what they feel. You question their decisions. You carry them with you long after you’ve closed the book. This story truly lives rent-free in your brain.

I found myself thinking about it even when I wasn’t reading, counting down the moments until I could dive back in. It’s one of those rare books you want to devour immediately, yet somehow also savor because you don’t want it to end. Every chapter pulls you forward, every scene adds tension, and the pacing is masterfully done.

The romance is a slow burn, intense and emotional, and the spice level is perfect. Just the right amount of heat, like a perfectly seasoned dish.

What truly sets this book apart is how seamlessly it blends genres. You get romance, psychological tension, and thriller elements woven together so well that it feels cinematic. I could easily see this story as a miniseries or film, it’s that vivid and well-structured.

Overall, The Rose and the Shadows is beautifully written, expertly crafted, and utterly captivating. If you love slow-burn romance with a dark, psychological twist and characters that burrow deep into your heart and mind, this book is an absolute must-read.

The Rose and the Shadows, the conclusion to the Storm and Shadow Duology.
This book jumps right back into where it left off on a cliffhanger and is just the beginning of the nightmares as the stranger continues to stalk Arden Rivers and leave her unwanted gifts and notes.

Although she is a very strong FMC, the protectiveness of the MMC Gideon Blackwell was needed as he, too, dealt with his own demons. His family's dark secrets that he planned to expose once and for all. The stalker has escalated, the family is making moves, and they are both in danger.

I was given an ALC in exchange for an honest review, however, it doesn't seem to be loaded on Goodreads yet, so I am posting this to the only edition available.

As always, the narrator, Jacci Prior, did an excellent job telling this story, which is why I decided to listen to the duology. She gave all the characters voices and personalities that came through audibly. Her performance saved this book because the writing style was not particularly enjoyable to me. I don't know how to word it, but the way it was written had a repetitive form that I found off-putting. I don't recall the first book doing that, but it's been a while since I read it, and I could have forgotten it was in the same format.

This is my personal opinion, and others may find the writing style great, which is why I encourage people to listen to the audiobook and make their own conclusion. One person's dislike could be another's all-time favorite. I believe that in all books.

There is a particular kind of restraint required to write convincingly about grief, addiction, and redemption—and Past Rock Bottom demonstrates that restraint with remarkable clarity.

What stands out most is not simply the emotional weight of Carl’s story, but the precision with which it is handled. His descent is neither dramatized nor softened; it is presented with an honesty that allows the reader to sit inside the discomfort rather than observe it from a distance. That choice alone elevates the narrative beyond familiar territory.

The introduction of Kate and Sarah could have easily shifted the story into something more conventional—a redemptive arc driven by external influence—but instead, their presence deepens the central tension. Redemption here is not given. It is resisted, questioned, and earned in increments that feel psychologically true.

There is also a quiet structural strength to the novel. The pacing allows space for reflection without losing narrative momentum, and the emotional intersections between characters feel deliberate rather than engineered.

This is not a story built on spectacle or dramatic twists. It is built on consequence, on the slow and often uncomfortable process of confronting what has been avoided. And in that, it achieves something far more difficult: it feels real.

A measured, thoughtful, and ultimately affecting novel that understands both the cost of falling—and the complexity of finding a way back.

This is the finale of this duology and what a finale! The first-- The Rose and the Storm -- ended in a cliffhanger, and this literally picks up from that terrifying moment for Arden. She realizes she's done hiding, done being afraid, and fights back. This book focused on fighting back and taking back your life and exposing the shadows hiding in the darkness (this applies to characters and business).

I love this conclusion and how Arden and Gideon beat the game with their own rules and way. They took down several players and they did it with flair.

The only thing I would ding it for was the constant repetition from a specific character. That was annoying.

The Rose and the Shadows book is book 2 in the Storm and the Rose series, picking up precisely where the story left off. As with the first book, I found it impossible to put this one down. Riveting, Suspenseful, and filled with scorching g hot romance, I was thoroughly enthralled by the characters, including those less endearing. This story captivated me, leaving me wanting more until the very last page, holding my attention with every word. This book is a must-read, one that will keep you up until your morning alarm, with no regrets. ~ Linda Osborne

I have not read the first book. Though this one took me on a deep dive into Love, protection, demons, obsessed stalker, and finding one's way to normal and peace. The Characters are bold in their own skin. Capturing the readers attention to dive into their very minds. Arden doesn't realize how strong she is, until Gideon and her stalker brings it out of her. Through love and fear we all grow. Thanks Goodreads.

T. L. Johnson does it again. This book ties everything together in the most beautiful way. The suspense, the drama, and the scenes *wink* will have you immersed even further than the first book. Definitely recommend and worth the read. Even when the story is over this author shows just how much thought that was put into everything.

This is the ending I needed. Book one left me hanging and I couldn't stop thinking about the characters, but the payoff in book two is soooo worth it. The plot was exciting, and the romance ws spicing in this one. The ending wasn't cliche, and it was beautiful.
