The Truths That Tether

Rate this book
Does the truth really set you free?

A missing serving girl. A swindled nobleman. An Irish mobster.

London 1811. When her stepcousin Alexander Dovefield, the future Baron of Newark, asks for her help to find a missing serving girl from his favorite gambling hell, Lady Zoe Demas once again enlists inquiry agent Quinton Huxley to piece together the puzzle of who is cheating whom. What at first seems like a simple swindle takes a sinister and murky turn when bodies start to pile up. As they attempt to solve the mystery, Quinton also struggles with revelations about his own past . . . and what they could mean for his future—and his increasingly undeniable feelings for the fiery and intelligent Lady Demas.

As the investigation proceeds, difficult choices must be made. The thin line between victim and villain begins to blur. When the stakes are raised—both personally and professionally—the whole gang of found family must work together to confront the truth and unmask a killer.

The third installment of the Q and Z Regency Mysteries, The Truths that Tether is a compelling page-turner that explores how truths hidden and revealed can change—or end—a life.

I've really been enjoying this historical mystery series with just a touch of romance.

I think what I like most about these books are how they progressively add to the sense of strength that this wonderful cast of characters have found in each other as both biological and found family. While the mysteries are well-plotted/written, it's Quinton, Zoe and their assorted friends/family that really make these books a pleasure to read.

I won't go into the synopsis here, but it involves an evil someone from Charlie's past, a family member that has given Zoe problems in the past and a bit of a surprising twist in the outcome of the killer. There are also some personal issues for our characters to deal with (which also brings more of a feel of real humanity to these fictional folks). Quenton is dealing with a stupendous surprise from the previous book's ending and how he will go forward from that disclosure. John and Savi are becoming closer, Aunt Theo has a setback, Charlie steps forward with a magnanimous gesture...lots going on here to set up the plot going forward.

My only caveat (and it's a personal one and not a dealbreaker at all) is how the romance between Quenton and Zoe is handled in the series. As a romance lover, I wish that there was more interaction between the two leads of a more personal nature. When they do interact, the majority of the time it is to argue and disagree pretty much about everything. I don't feel the gradual build-up of attraction and softening that I like to see in a burgeoning relationship. And I must say other than the sweet and heartfelt speech that Quenton makes at the end of the book, I didn't feel like I had seen throughout the books how he/they had gotten there...if that makes sense? Just a personal aside.

Looking forward to more from this group. Please keep them coming.

Excellent character development!

While Wounds that Linger will always be my favorite of the three, Truths that Tether was definitely the most satisfying. Wounds that Linger was exciting and suspenseful which I love but Truths that Tether just really brought all new understanding and depth to the characters. I really enjoyed learning about why rank was such a big deal back then and why it would have been such a huge transition to go from poor to nobleman. I also loved how Aunt Theo, aka Lady Bexley, had such a big role in unraveling the mystery. She is such a pivotal character and it was fun to see her at work. I also loved how Charlie really stepped up and became more likeable as a character for me. And the changes with Alexander I would have never seen coming. Truths that Tether is a must read conclusion (or is it??) to the series. I feel like these characters are family now and I would so love to see more stories about them! Hint hint

This is the third book in the Q&Z (Quinton and Zoe) Regency Mystery series. It opens just after the end of the previous book, "The Wounds that Linger."

As the book opens, Quinton Huxley has made new discoveries about himself. And Lady Zoe Demas' step-cousin Alexander Dovefield has requested help in solving the disappearance of a serving girl he has befriended.

There are a lot of twists and turns while investigating the disappearance and and resolving the relationship between Zoe and Quinton.

The book is not quite what I expected in that the investigation almost seems secondary to continued development of the motivation and foibles of Zoe and Quinton as well as the major supporting characters constituting their team. I found that aspect fascinating, and tried to finish the book in one sitting, picking it back up immediately after one forced interruption.

I do recommend that the three books in the series be read in order, starting with "The Ties That Divide."

I enjoyed all three of the books in this series, but did get distracted by inconsistencies, especially in the mode of address toward certain characters. I believe the author should have researched better regarding Regency era address. Otherwise the books followed several murders that were solved and they had interesting and unusual characters.

I liked all three books in this series. 3.75 over all. I think some things just happened so fast (the events with the dowager for example) and that made some parts of this feel unsatisfactory. I wish we had gotten more romance towards the end of the book but that was put a stray by his cousin.

The mystery was interesting, I liked it a lot and thought that who and why was interesting.

Well done.

Please don’t tell this series is over! The characters are indeed a family of misfits that have found their way into each other’s hearts and make an intriguing team of crime solvers. I hope the series keeps going. I highly recommend this series.

Probably closer to 4.5. Enjoyed what might be the end of the series(?) The author has enough secondary characters that could come to the forefront if the series continues while still giving MCs the main stage.
