Seriously, I'm telling you this is really great stuff. This volume particularly revolves around the cultural festival, acceptance, and freedom of expression. I love how the author didn't choose to ride the heavy side of the path and weave the story soothingly calm. The clear autumn sky in the end sure is uplifting, just like that of Sousuke's grateful and adorable smile.
Mitsumi is trying to do literally everything for her first-ever school festival and is burning the candle at both ends and maybe from the side as well. Shima winds up playing his usual role, but that lands him a role of the kind he’d been trying to avoid, and doing so is going to bring all sorts of his past back to haunt him.
Phew, there’s a lot here. This is a very good festival arc, frankly, and that’s high praise in my book given how many of these one encounters if reading any amount of manga, especially in the romance genre. Wisely, this has all the trappings, but the meat is a little different.
Mitsumi is given a lot to do, then decides to do even more than that. There’s more than a little immaturity to the way she just spreads herself over everything and wants to do more and more and more, which bites her hard and shows her the pettiness of teenage girls in the process.
As befits this series, Shima comes to the rescue, but it turns out that Mitsumi doesn’t need very much by way of saving. She’s more than capable of weathering criticism and doesn’t even let it stop her from coming through for those who dunked on her.
Shima is a mess, as usual, but he’s an interesting mess and it’s made him way more interesting than a generic shojo lead. His complicated relationship with acting is one thing, but there’s also an issue with how he keeps people at arm’s length, his cynicism simmering underneath his façade.
When the class decides to mount a production of The Sound of Music (this high school is ludicrously advanced - my 11th grade class couldn’t have pulled off a screening of The Sound of Music), Shima gets pulled in due to his own hang ups and is forced to reckon with not only his own outlook, but Mitsumi’s as well.
What’s really great about this is that the two of them are largely doing their own thing for big chunks of the story, rather than pining after one another. They certainly cross paths and Mitsumi is on Shima’s mind, most definitely, but they are separate people still.
Shima’s development this volume and his unfortunately timed reckoning with the path he’s chosen (the metaphor here’s a little tortured, but still good) are mostly spot on and when you look at this manga from a distance almost every cast member has strong characterization (that almost becomes relevant in two paragraphs).
The side character stuff is equally solid. Poor Takamine has to suffer in the shadow of the student president position she lost, but there’s a good turn between her and the flighty guy who got it. Elsewhere, Yuzu, the girl who can’t stand being fawned over for her looks, and the very nerdy Makoto have probably my favourite moments in the story, with Yuzu’s dog painting becoming a focal point for a truly great friendship. Eventually.
Downsides, there are some. I think that Ririka kind of falls a bit flat as an antagonist at the end of it all. It’s a little surprising because this story has already done some stellar work with would-be rivals. She goes a lot harder on Shima than he deserves and, in fact, he doesn’t deserve near as much as he thinks he does.
While that’s a standard ploy to keep your male lead from being unlikable, it’s a little less special than the characterization this series has been effortlessly nailing thus far. I genuinely think that the author could have pulled off having him be a bit more involved in her past situation than he was.
Now, Ririka going hard is fine - she’s absolutely vicious at more than one point here and her interactions with Mitsumi are plenty of fun amidst the horror of it all. And, for all that they defang some of this, there are still some repercussions to handle. It’s definitely the weakest part of the volume.
4.5 stars - Ririka could be better, everything else is great. While Skip & Loafer rarely knocks my socks off, it always does a strong job and, with this whole arc a notch above the norm, I think I’ll reward it as such.
I've been on the fence about continuing with this series, but I do believe I have finally picked a side.
This volume is set up to center on the male protagonist, Sousuke Shima. He has previously wanted to avoid acting opportunities with the school drama club because of his child-acting experience, but now he feels obliged to participate in the class play at the high school festival.
The author seems to want us to think this is a big deal, and some characters from Shima's past from outside school are brought in to witness this development. And it seems like something happens with that, but the storytelling is so muddled, I was left vaguely confused and very disconnected.
This meandering, low-key approach is just too much for me. I'm setting this series aside, and I doubt I'm coming back.

I maintain that Skip and Loafer is an absolute breath of fresh air. I really like the pacing and the characters are still great. They're all well-developed characters, genuine and (mostly) likeable. It's been nice to see them progress. Especially Shima, who this volume really focuses on. The way they handle problems isn't too dramatic (with the exception of Ririka), which is always nice to see as well.
Shima gets more focus in this volume and it seems like the story is developing into more complexity but there's some spark missing. Excited to read more.
Mitsumi and Shima's friendship means a lot to each other and a lot to me. 🥹 As do the other friendships (there's more examples but Yuzuki's art being acknowledged by Makoto. 😭❤️) Every single character is written with so much depth and care.
my fav volume so far!! so wholesome and the characters are so well written me gusta que pongan mayor profundidad e issues bc god knows that if teens don't have issues I simply can't relate
yet another fantastic installment to my favorite ongoing series! misaki takamatsu is, frankly, a master of character development and it shows in this volume especially.
This was so good and so emotional, but also really subtle in its complexities. I really, really love Shima's dilemma here and the outcome of him not wanting to be in a destructive, self-hating relationship with his childhood friend (can't remember her name for the life of me rn, sorry!). I love how the determinism of Mitsumi is really represented for their school festival, but how she's often at the end of her rope because she takes on too much. I like how both Mitsumi and Shima were able to see different sides of each other during this volume. Since we focused so much on them, we were unable to see as much of the other characters, but I don't mind that much. This was a really, really well done volume. I'm intrigued about why Shima's childhood friend was so aggressive towards his mom. Is it out of protectiveness or pettiness? What is Shima's relationship with his mom like? It's obvious that he isn't that close to her or his little brother, but it makes it seem like his mom is guilty for something. I'm excited to learn about all this! I also really felt for Mitsumi during this volume, especially when everyone's childhood and middle school friends came to visit but she was all alone. Aight, that's it, onto more!!
I really liked this one ugh We got even more insight into characters! (esp shima and his identity crisis) BUT THERE WAS NO NAO CHAN AND THATS A CRIME! NAO CHAN ( ◜‿◝ )♡ save me
While it got a little overcrowded and some moments a bit to cliche, it still had a ton of heart.
I really loved the ending, it wasn't only cute, but it had such a wholesome moment, and you can tell these characters really feel for each other. Really care. I also enjoyed the story this time around, and the acting thing almost being taboo for a lot of people is a interesting route to go.
How I've missed them. There's not much that happened since it focused on the school event, but it was fun nontheless. We got to meet Shima's little brother! He's so adorable and so squishyyyyy.
Protezione in stile tamandua.
