Ahvram Goldfinch has finally adjusted to his new life in the Central Prism of the Shimmering City. Now, he finds his time split between training with the PeaceKeepers under Commander Hawke, and studying his magic with Chief Arcanist Hector Durellion in the Arcanum. It’s a comfortable new rhythm that he finds he likes.

Just when Ahvram finds himself on the edge of understanding his null magic, disaster strikes. Owen is found empty and hollow as his obedience curse surges back with a strength Chief Arcanist Hector can’t control. In hopes of both finding the cure to Owen’s curse and securing a new ally, Queen Lynx sets her own plans in motion. But as soon as she does, the Treetop Wilds sends word of an even greater threat. Ahvram, Commander Hawke, and new allies must journey to the Treetop Wildlands to do whatever is necessary to find a clear solution in a situation fraught with danger.

The Treetops Wildland is a vast forest rich with history, secrets, magic, and monsters. Ahvram will have to embrace both the ways of the Wildlanders and his magic if he is to save anyone, including himself.

A very enjoyable story. I loved the characters and their interactions with each other. I could imagine hanging out with them and enjoying their banter.
Excellent world building, very interesting to see Ahvram
Transition from the city to the forest as he grows into himself.
Tiny quibbles: it had been so long since I read Null that many of the unexplained references to the past made no sense to me. That’s on me though, I should have re-read the first book
Finally, and this is a spoiler. How does anyone who has been stabbed in the shoulder, and the side and the leg and been arrow shot in the thigh hike through the forest at night and then engage in a magical fight?
Overall, loved the book and am eagerly awaiting Ahvram’s next adventure
