English Title: The Beloved Concubine of the Eastern Palace

An excellent harem intrigue novel following the FL, Fang Yun, as she starts her journey as an unfavored concubine in the east palace and moves up to be the emperor, Pei Yao's, beloved consort. There's no other trope such as rebirth or transmigration; it's a pure harem intrigue novel. Read this for a very realistic take on what a harem romance looks like, including the emperor taking turns sleeping with various women, sometimes purely for political reasons, and being honest about not being able to devote himself to one woman completely.

But don't get indignant on the FL's behalf! She is completely okay with that and plays a role herself to win the emperor's affections. At the end of the day, it's not clear whether the FL really loves the emperor, but she definitely has affection for him. After all, they've spent many years together and have kids. If you're expecting a romance where the emperor gets rid of everyone in his harem just to be with the FL, don't read this book. But if you're looking for a realistic harem intrigue novel with plenty of plotting and the FL overcoming the numerous schemes against her and don't mind the length (a whopping 600+ chapters), then this novel is for you!

Court politics play a huge part of the story, and a lot of the harem politics plays out based on greater political events. For example, when there's a war going on, the women in the harem from military families rise in prominence and get more visits from the emperor. Or if a consort gets caught orchestrating a nasty scheme, if her family is prominent enough and is needed by the ML, then he can't punish the consort too harshly. I appreciated the realistic approach the author took and how she portrayed the emperor juggling women to keep the balance within the harem.

Even the reason why the FL joins the crown prince's harem, even though she's a lowly concubine-born daughter of the Fang family, is related to politics. Originally her legitimate sister, Fang Pei, was supposed to join, but due to the Fang family supporting the Eldest Prince rather than the crown prince, her sister conveniently "falls ill" and the FL is sent in her stead. The sister ends up joining the harem of the Eldest Prince instead, a clear sign of where the Fang family leans between the two princes.

Because of her family's political leanings, the ML completely disregards her presence initially, and it takes a long time before he trusts her, as the Fang family supports his rival. But the FL tells him clearly right from the beginning that she hates her family for killing her concubine mother unjustly and does everything she can to cause trouble for them until he believes her. Fang Yun is smart and recognizes that her initial value to the ML lies in her ability to make things difficult for her family and acts accordingly.

As Fang Yun rises in prominence and favor in the harem, she quickly becomes a target for the other women's jealousy. They all look down on her due to her family situation and the fact that she's concubine-born, but little do they know or understand her value to the ML. In fact, it got a little bit old that every new rival who comes along underestimates her due to her poor family situation, but it's understandable given the importance of family standings and politics in the harem. Here's an example from the story:

"What I mean is, all of Fang Liangdi's current glory and fame are tied to His Highness's favor. Without family support, as long as she makes one mistake His Highness can't tolerate, she will be doomed."

Zhou Shuren spoke in a low, heavy tone.

This was Fang Yun's greatest weakness-unlike others who had varying degrees of family support, her family had long abandoned her

The only complaint I have about the story is that there are barely any likable female characters outside of the FL. Even if they start out nice enough, like Yang Cefei, inevitably it's revealed that they're secretly scheming against the FL or someone else in the background. The FL eventually does find some allies, but it would've been nice to have more decent female characters rather than everyone going crazy from jealousy and committing some heinous crime or another. And believe me, there were all sorts of schemes attempted, some directly against the FL and others against the emperor's kids.

At least the Empress was a bit more nuanced rather than being a complete villain. I appreciated that she didn't vie for the emperor's affections and was content with his respect, and it's only near the end that she started harboring doubts towards the FL due to worry for her son's future. Before that, she and the FL had a mutual agreement to not act against each other or target the kids. Finally some integrity in another female character other than the FL.

Speaking of the FL, I really liked her as the main character. Not only is she pretty, but she has a good head on her shoulders. Even though she didn't have a good upbringing and is aware that she falls behind other consorts when it comes to the womenly arts, she actively reads and learns while she's in the palace to improve herself. Unlike some other characters, she has high EQ and can read the room pretty quickly and adjust her behavior accordingly. The ML mentions repeatedbly that he visits the other consorts out of necessity, but he enjoys visiting the FL's palace and always feels the most relaxed and comfortable there. She's smart as well; the ML coordinates with her on multiple occasions to achieve some goal, and he'll also occasionally ask her for advice regarding state affairs as well.

There are so many reasons Fang Yun is as favored as she is. However, she doesn't let it get to her head. All she wants for her and her children is to live peacefully and safely. She doesn't even want her son to become crown prince, since that will automatically make him a target. Most of the schemes in the book are against her, and she only personally takes action when her bottom line has been crossed, which usually involves her kids. Compared to most of the other scheming women in the harem who are constantly vying for the emperor's affection and trying to put the her down, the FL is a breath of fresh air.

Would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a long, meaty harem intrigue novel!

4.2stars. I reconsidered it after some thinking.

Phew, what a journey. This was probably the longest novel I have read in a while. It truly was the step by step rise of a concubine to the most favored women of a nation. It doesn't sound all that special (and I have read many novels that could be summed up with those very same words) but what set this novel apart for me was a sense of realism.

While the initial setting was a bit special: Our ML, Pei Yao, is not the current emperor's son, but rather his nephew for whom the emperor was supposed to hold the throne until it was the crown prince's time to rise... not that that worked out so well. Human nature and all that. The crown prince seemed to have been raised and established fairly well, even though the current emperor favored his own son, which was probably due to Pei Yao's biological father, who made political arrangements before his eventual passing - though not all of them worked out.

It is not one of those miraculous stories where the emperor suddenly becomes monogamous and he and his favorite spend their life together in their very own happily ever after. In fact for most of the novel the harem is very much present and the emperor does not solely sleep with the main character. The harem is quite clearly portrayed as a political tool that is not truly separate from court politics, though of course the women in the harem are not to engage in politics itself. Even if the Pei Yao might not like the woman in question - if her family does well, he has to give her face. Part of that was of course due to the fact that he was fairly young and in need of their support.

The relationship between the ML and the FL was also enjoyable. Is it a romance? That's best answered with the neat German word "Jein." It's both a yes and a no. Is their relationship good? Yes, it is.

The FL, Fan Yun, is very clear-headed and her background for once also gives a good reason why. She ended up in the position of the crown prince's concubine because her father once promised to support the crown prince but changed his mind, however, since he had once made that promise, he sends his illegitimate daughter instead of his legitimate one - that one he sends to the prince he actually plans to support. Even beyond that the FL knows what it means to lose favor and how unsure favor is - that's how she lost her mother. For Fan Yun, it's very clear that she can't give all of herself to her husband and that she must always love herself more than anyone else. However, I really enjoyed that this did not mean that she was just calculating. Of course she kept up a facade in front of the ML but if you spend years with someone some of that is real. One quote form the novel really described it well.

In the royal family, it's best to guard one's heart, but not betray others' sincerity.

It is one of the aspects of the FL I really liked, when someone treats her well, she does return that care. It's not only in her relationship with the ML, but with other characters as well. She has some moments where that facade breaks, or when what she would like to show is exactly what she feels. Fan Yun can also be quite ruthless, but over the course of the novel, we also see her suffering some losses and setbacks - mostly against other concubines. The ML is actually pretty good about consistently treating her with care. Even if, due to their status, they can never truly be equals.

I think that if either of their upbringing had been different their story might have played out differently. One of the things that brought them together in the beginning was their shared enemies and experiences of struggle. It made the FL a person with unusual experiences which set her apart from the other women, well-raised and well-loved noblewomen, and allowed her to catch his eye. The initial struggles they faced allowed her to set herself up as an ally - without that she might still have won his favor, but it wouldn't have been the same. They genuinely spend time together, and as the ML once put it in his mind:

In his view, companionship was the most sincere thing he could offer. After all, jewels and treasures were gifts he could give to anyone.

Which is something that remains true to their relationship through the novel.

I could say a lot more, but well... That would all be spoilers.

The novel is long and really goes through her rise step by step. That obviously means it sometimes feels drawn out. I did not think that the novel was badly paced, but after a certain number of chapters there is always some lag - not in the sense that it was filler like chapters that just delivered fluff, but no matter how good something is... too much of it at once makes it not as good as it could be. So pace yourself when reading the novel!

One of the downsides for me was the way the novel was sometimes narrated, the example most prominent in my mind is form the extras: The FL is thinking about establishing schools for women, and the narrations mentions that she could never imagine that there would be a time where men and women would be truly equal. And then saying that she just wanted to give them the means to better themselves. It was not bad, but it broke immersion for me since it was not a perspective that fit in the narrative at that point.

Another one is that the FL, for all that I like her... is just a bit too controlled. She had her moments but it did feel a bit unreal at times.

What I did enjoy on the other hand was the style of the extras. Each one of the royal children got their own chapter that briefly went over their lives and their struggles. Even the children that had not been born by the MC. Some of them had good endings, others were sadder or more bittersweet, but you could see how they could happen. They did not come out of nowhere, or followed the idea that only the FL's children could have a good ending.

Another bonus this novel has are the side characters. The FL and ML are pretty standard, though I personally though that the ML was more unique between the two of them, but what really stuck out where the side characters. These side characters are the other concubines of course. They are the people that our FL is stuck with after all. The most standout of all of them was the Crown Princess/Empress. She was a really fascinating character and you could really understand her motivations for acting, even if it sometimes made me internally go NOOOOOOO. In another life they could have been good friend... but here? Well.

Should you read this novel? Yes, if you have the time and like harem novels. It does have some fluffy moments, but do not read it for a sweeping romance. it's not. It's more like... the story of a woman after her marriage. There is love... but really, that's not the most central part.

4/7/25 I'm trying to decide if this is a romance or not. I mean ... yes? ... ish? The ending is ... more happy than not but ... man you gotta read it but I felt it was even less happy than the other one by this author. Like FL "had feelings/affection for" but definitely not love. (I think the other book they were in LOVE by the end...) And I felt we just needed a lot more clarification. And this is on ML for never giving FL enough security. At least not by the end of the main story. By the end of the extras, I think, yes, but we didn't particularly get any sweetness, just more plot - well and a summary of the kiddos, some super tragic. *sigh* This author has no problem sending people off to ruin in the extras.

Overall, I liked it. LOL I was ALMOST not even mad I was on edge about the empress the whole time. And I was happy to see while she more than flirted with becoming evil, she never took the final step. Which ironically was her downfall, but it was also her saving grace. Like I said, IMO the best characters of the book were her dad - though he of course made some missteps, his were the most minor, other than P5, who was always pure. Maybe because he knew he'd die young? I felt the most unreconciled for his character, I think. HE DESERVED A WARM AND PASSIONATE LOVE, DESPITE KNOWING HE'D DIE, DAMMIT! AND he lived till what, 22? Hmph.

I think had the world not been a toxic dumpster fire, I'd have liked this book even more? But as it was, a lot of the scheming and shit I just really couldn't take and read/skimmed. And also some of the characters were just extra beyond batshit. [Too lazy to look - you'd think this book was written first though maybe not?]
I'm definitely not mad I read it though - FL wins a lot, but has setbacks too and it's all rather realistic.

Solid C+

The Beloved Concubine of the Eastern Palace

1 FL is Fang Yun, ML(?) Pei Yao is the crown prince

FL is 17, has basically been an orphan since she was 10. F CP for playing these shitty stupid games like making her wait etc

14 already read skimming the court shit etc - these are not the times to stress me out with this; I just want to see FL succeed

17 *sigh* indication of MTL since it calls FL’s concubine mother her “aunt”
(lol and how many errors were there cuz the comments have a whole discussion yet clearly I still encountered it)

20 😹😹☠️💯❤️ FL Fang Yun scheming against/making her ES Fang Pei look bad

41 😡 Zhou shuren and He LiangDi need to die. That Yang cefei isn’t good either nor do I trust the crown princess

54 ah FL has become his refuge. Hopefully Zhou & He & Yang all take each other down

76 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t think CP was too ruthless - I’m glad he saw through Zhou’s scheming & I hope she’s ruined forever. Bitch

82 😹😅☠️ the fact that FL was favored indirectly cuz her bitch half sister

87 😿 FL truly has lived a difficult life

91 I love their interactions. And lol to the pigeon pooping on him 😱😹☠️

93 hm I don’t think either has caught feelings yet but if anything him more than her

102 she’s so smart at currying favor - and it’s enjoyable seeing her mess with He liangdi

106 Oop and just like that FL has a daughter. lol hopefully the poor girl doesn’t look like Zhou shuren cuz that’d be annoying AF

120 Lolol FL slapped her dad. Ahahah. Hopefully she doesn’t suffer for it though

126 😒😡 this stupid fucking cunt empress (honestly ML’s dad was stupid too - why not make the brother the regent instead of the actual emperor? Regent is already iffy enough. I get it’s for plot but this is just annoying dog blood splashing)

138 😹😅 Fang Pei miscarried again. I laughed, then I felt bad. Poor innocent unborn child. But it’s fictional so 🤷🏻‍♀️ also the third princess pushed FP & caused it. Will she be punished? Will this drive a wedge between siblings?

155 uh oh the crown princess has the plague?! I hope she’s ok - we need her for balance & protection still. (Also does ML know he’s been accused of embezzling? Is he prepared? Should be considering he’s intercepted other messages… but … is P2 on his side or not?!)

156 ugh Yang def knew she was pregnant already but… guess I can’t blame her for waiting to be sure.

166 *sigh* word salad MTL copy paste errors

176 lol ew he had to sleep with Feng for the act. Though I guess it’s not a hardship for a guy to fuck a pretty girl? Still.

186 ugh FL’s aunt - hopefully she doesn’t fall for a scheme and her aunt helps her not Yang

188 🫥 mom=Song YuMei, aunt = Song QiuHe (3 yrs younger than her mom). Good bit of word salad.
🫤 Just as I thought she was careful she just lets it go. IMO there are definitely problems with the aunt

196 poor FL. Her shit aunt really is betraying her.

229 Seeing bitchy princess 3 mess up is nice but this whole “I love my brother Yin” thing is So fucking creepy. I cannot accept back then they actually said this
LOL though - caught!!

238 😡 if the shit empress & P1 get away with this assassination attempt 😡😡😡

242 🙊 this amazing Liu family. ML & FL owe them a lot

258 lol I just realized her eliminating her family was so bleh I didn’t even note the c 🙃
Another mention of “in this era” … is FL a transmigrator? 🤷🏻‍♀️

259 on the one hand how could they have overlooked the third princess come on now people. On the other hand it was satisfying for ML to get to scold the shit emperor

260 lol she knows how to keep him interested 💯

275 boo she fell for the rice cakes scheme - I knew they’d be suspect as soon as she ate them - but she did everything she could, even having a doctor inspect them.
Yang needs to die. Evil monster.
lol yay FL getting to choose her own palace
(Hopefully the crown princess doesn’t take the little girl away forever but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

276 lol F you Yang. (And is FL rendering her infertile from the food? Gotta do enough so it works though! The bitch has to eat it!)
Good riddance to the shit emperor too

280 yay a baby boy

281 lol yikes - her tears when he visits her made me tear up!

286 I am CACKLING! Ahaha Yang has to spend a month in a temple

288 on the one hand I can’t remember who Wan lingyi is … On the other hand I don’t care 🤷🏻‍♀️ wish the author had just kept surnames but sigh. Oh. It’s that Hu bitch. Ugh.

294 hopefully her sworn little brother helps and gains merits! ❤️💯

🤷🏻‍♀️ 306 sorry guy but I hope Yang’s brother - if he goes to battle - dies with no honor. And I just hope he doesn’t commit some mistake that kills a bunch of other innocent soldiers

317 😹😹☠️💯💯💯 FL cadged 50k from that bitch Yang for the war effort

319 lol and Yang tried to badmouth FL for not donating & pretending to only have broken jewelry? Talk about smashing her own foot with the rock she picked up

321 💪💯 FL got her buddy Song a promotion!

323 yeah that Xie bitch isn’t so simple or kind if she’s going to try to infect people - esp FL - with fucking SMALLPOX. JFC that’s evil. And what I fully expect her to try

324 wow ShangYuan is a truly despicable nation

325 🫥 cousin Chen Xun has been found. And yay FL able to placate the emperor. And that the empress (truly is?) so broad minded

343 Yang is such a monster just using her 2 yo son

346 already her ploy to make the poor baby ill to drag the emperor over has failed

350 yay the empress is pregnant! … I can’t decide if I hope she has a son or not (and will he survive?! 😱 Will she?!)

351 she’s so cute! I live their interaction!

352 😹☠️ Yang is a clown, and BURN FL saying “well she finally managed to keep the emperor - I was afraid I’d have to help her” - send Yang to the burn unit 😹

355 I’m happy Song was promoted & I appreciate FL (and obviously ML) understanding the bigger picture but I still hate Yang even more

362 oh no! Duke Qin has died?! (Also huh I felt it was such a non thing I didn’t even note when Yang’s pregnancy was confirmed)

366 Oh no. I’m tearing up. Not just Duke Qin but now his oldest son Hou MingXu is gone too. Poor youngest Hou MingXuan
JFC this fucking Yang family poisoning that hostage prince. Fucking idiots.

369 😹😅💯🤷🏻‍♀️ she so easily manipulates the emperor

372 lol everyone is so deeply scheming! Even if not malicious it’s a lot! lol I’d never survive these top players

375 poor third prince. Also guess his fall really was an accident/negligent servants

378 lol she deceives him so easily “*surprised pikachu* what? Liu Qin went to the army?!”

388 lol the empress is a secret chaos muppet!

393 honestly Yan Pin just needs to be locked up. Malicious annoying bitch. Lin Chan chose to be a problem from go

400 lol Yang is barren now. 🤷🏻‍♀️ her own fault. (Also saved any future kids from torment)

401 ah a legitimate son. Little prince 5

408 😹☠️ will Lin Chan die of rage when she learns who/what RongRong is?!
… so P4 is 2 nearly 3, she had him when he was 18 so she’s around 20-21(22?) lol to the ~translator being off by a few years. ML is “almost 30” but that like she said could be 26-29… (he should be about 5 years older?)

409 I more than half think FL may be a transmigrator but…

411 … I thought they were watching the awful Yang family. Ugh poor Liu Qin. I hope he’s okay.

412 <.< I know he also went into battle but I can’t remember who Ye Yunxiao is 😅🤷🏻‍♀️ who is he related to if anyone?
Also Yang is a cancer in the harem

417 lol FL caught a good stray bullet - promoted to gui fei in this ruse to take down the Yang family!

419 srsly that comment - with He’s zero brain, how DID she manage to live till now?
(Also glad 🤞🤞 FL & the empress maintain a good or at least peaceful relationship)

… 428 is the empress in on it or no?
Seems… no?

429 end copy paste error? And lol the emperor snuck over at night but with FL sleeping with the kids he didn’t have space in the bed?!? Lolol

Skimmed 431 - I think Lin Chan killed He’s maid preemptively to further control He but I can’t be sure
I need FL to be more wary of Yan Pin this poisonous Lin Chan. Also Yang disgusts me so we skim that

435 I don’t even remember who Yun cainu is. (Also He is definitely drugging the emperor via Lin - I need them to figure This shit out)
Poor wronged FL. Disappointed in the empress too. And that Hu guy who listens to his sister too much - fuck him he needs to be replaced

436 oh it’s Yun whatever Yang’s ex maid. Huh.

450 ah Lin was definitely drugging He. *shakes head*
Song is now the adoptive mother of P3 poor little baby. (Though I’m kinda judging P1 & princess 2 for not saying anything when they knew he was being mistreated)

453 I love he took her on a date ❤️❤️ (ugh to the bitch who interrupted them)

476 🤞🤞🤞 I hope this balance between FL & the empress continues. FL really helped out the empress this time

480 Lololol even knowing she’s half faking I’m wiping tears as she tells the emperor how understanding she is while aggrieved at the harem newcomers

494 ML is 30 now & P5 is 1

513 this is stupid. How TF is Yan fei so capable. And obviously people are helping her- so the country’s security isn’t great either

525 Ugh this sinking feeling. I fully expect the empress to turn evil now

😒 528 on the one hand I get why the empress is doing this. On the other I’m totally biased so I hate it

529 💪💪💪 yaaas Hong Zheng you stay firmly team FL! (Well he’s firmly team ML but for which woman to say is best)

533 😻😻 I love our smart FL

534 wait! Why doesn’t Luo cainu need to go pay respects?! lol is it cuz she’s never had sex with the emperor yet?! Lolol lucky bitch.

535 Honestly I don’t like Xu lingyi - FL tried to warn her multiple times but she’s only grateful to the empress

537 ok I love how much ML loves FL (also come on now, author! Stop writing EVERYTHING she does is an act!)

“Despite her frustration, Wan Pin had spentenough time in the palace to understand reality.” … uh, I think she doesn’t considering how mad & jealous she is of FL’s courtyard. Like bitch it’s been HOW long & you haven’t figured out she’s the favorite?

540 ugh I’m disappointed in Pei Yan. So much for “I wish it was only the 2 of us” - already drawn away by Wan Ping & that Xu, who… is pregnant?! 😒
Glad FL is still protecting her heart. (And yes I’m worried about P4)

544 😒 annoyed they’re all just taking this at face value - imo those chestnut cakes were definitely suspect

(545?) 😱😱😱 the empress had been pumping Xu full of contraceptive. Uhhh so much for the “we don’t harm children” - she knew it was doomed from the start!

546 lol our vegetable planting Luo cainu - is she a transmigrator?! 😹💯

575 lol to FL using the emperor as a cudgel. Wan Fei (that Hu chick) really is stupid though. Also I hope the empress trying to bring FL down takes herself down instead

577 Jesus Christ Xu is trying to murder P4
578 oh shit is FL disfigured from her fall?!
I hope P4 is ok. YAY LUO CAINU
579 ugh they’re going to let the empress get away with it again - she’s silencing Xu
And oh FUCK me, FL is going to be found pregnant but miscarry isn’t she

584 tbh I’m a little surprised how easy it was to take down the empress - house arrest & loss of control in managing the palace. Though I know this is only temporary

588 yikes the poisoned p5 poor kiddo

592 hm will Jin Fei really be steady or does she have thoughts of becoming the empress dowager?

608 I really don’t know how to feel about this ~alliance the empress is offering
609 TianMo is a giant shit stirring piece of shit. Go die.

612 already skimming all this TM shit - She’s going to do something evil like try to murder FL & P4 poor sweet little baby boy

613 honestly? The best character is Lord Lu, the empress’s dad.

621 FL’s concern & reluctance for her son to be named crown prince made me tear up. She doesn’t say it but she feels it. She never wanted this life. I’m glad the empress seems to have fully woken up too. So glad TM wasn’t successful and that Yun at the last minute changed her mind

622 huh I didn’t read the c title so I was hit out of the blue by the end. Also ☠️☠️ The emperor was the biggest chaos muppet but not a great one.
Ending kinda petered out. Lowkey the empress was luckiest, getting to leave. Though glad the emperor never added to his harem again

623 extra: P4; ugh poor kid falling for Ye JinTang - and oh he approached her concealing his identity 🫥 well
Argh I hate it! I mean I’m glad he had a mostly happy life - but I want him to have EVERYTHING! The emperor abdicated when P4/CP turned 30 - FL there to keep a watchful eye

624 extra P1; … JFC that was grim

625 extra; P3 - perfectly lovely ❤️ he and his wife lived together till she was 70. Two sons, one daughter, no concubines other than his initial two maids he didn’t pay attention to
And glad he took care of that one malicious maid decisively

626 extra princess 2; yaaaay what an absolutely lovely life 😻😻😻 (lol though their poor kid - never once mentioned other than the pregnancy)

627 extra princess 6; sad she suffered but glad her life became what she wanted and she was happy ❤️

628 p5; ahhhh sad these idiots, though … gosh P5 was so noble. He let his wife go entirely unfettered and unencumbered

629 princess 7; lol she found a good man too ❤️💯

630 extra emperor & Zhao guifei (FL); lol of course they encounter a problem with pirates taking over the south on their vacation

631 same, part 2; yikes an assassination attempt. FL remains the coolest, gathering intel like that

632 same, part 3; oh no, ML is 74 and seems to be dying. And oop FL just said she’s 7-8 years younger than him - she entered the palace at 17, he had just turned 25 then. Huh. So they’ve been together nearly 50 years
Man. I cried at his last day. Also… *sigh* I get it but kinda (very much) a meh ending. When he says he wronged her. *sigh* and she admits there were regrets. And if they have a next life, if they have unfinished business, let them be equals… 💔 … and only then their story will be complete. Knife to the heart

This was an interesting read compared to others of the "palace intrigue"/"imperial harem" genre. The FL, like many others in her position, is a smart girl starting from a lower status. Her carefulness and restraint eventually gets the ML's attention, then care, and love as he journeys to becoming the emperor. However, very similar to some of the others, she doesn't actually trust him, but for once, as a native character (non-transmigrated), she is written so that we know she's not completely faking everything and she too cares for him.

I loved a lot of the side characters. I found the leads a little stock type, but still enjoyable, but the humanity in some of the side characters, particularly the Empress, helped flesh out the story. The imperfections brought out by context compared to each of their backstories and some struggles with their choices help us remember that this isn't just some feel good romance set in a historical period and for me, that became more enjoyable. Still felt bad for some of the characters, especially in the extras.
