I was never meant to be free. My father made sure of that, treating me like one of his diamonds. Precious, polished, and locked away until sold to the highest bidder—Leonardo Rossetti, the hotheaded son of the most ruthless crime family in New York.
Our marriage was a business deal, nothing more. He made that clear the moment we exchanged vows. I wasn’t his wife, I was his possession. A pawn in his family’s empire.
He made the rules. I broke them.
I ran. I lied. I fought him at every turn.
Because if he thought I would submit, he was wrong. If he thought I would fear him, he didn’t know me at all.
But the real battle wasn’t between us. It was inside me. Because somewhere in the war of wills, I stopped wanting to escape.
Leonardo
I never wanted a wife. Love was a weakness I couldn’t afford, and Eleanor Price was nothing more than leverage. This marriage was about power, about securing my family’s hold on the gem trade.
She didn’t agree.
She challenged me at every turn, testing my patience, my rules, my control. She lied. She ran. She pushed me past my limits. And instead of breaking, she made me want her even more.
I told myself it was obsession. Possession. That the way I watched her, the way I needed to know where she was at all times, had nothing to do with feelings.
But then someone threatened her.
And I learned the hard way. Eleanor isn’t just my wife. She’s mine.
Me encantó absolutamente.
A tratti contraddittorio.
When I first saw this book, I was really looking forward to reading it. I thought that it would be a somewhat amusing but dark mafia story. It was not. At all! It was incredibly boring and I had to keep reminding myself to stay focused enough on a paragraph before going to the next. It was 99% deep philosophical inner dialogue. They acted like they completely had each other figured out - that it was a game of who cracks their composure first. Seriously, almost all of their interactions were by observing each other. No real communication. It also drove me nuts that Leo cracked his nuckles at least 3 times in every single one of his POV chapters. They sounded like gunshots apparently. 2/3rds of each chapter reworded itself. It was part of why I kept getting distracted. I would read a bit, lose focus, try to read some more but then get confused thinking that I must have been really distracted because I had just read what I was reading and I thought I had lost my place during my distractions. Nope. The author just keeps stating something and then says it again in 10 different ways. It was like me saying “I like pizza. Pizza is delicious. Pizza smells good. I like to put toppings on pizza. I like to eat pizza.” We get it. Pizza is good. Move on already. Also, there were some errors with pronouns as well as when describing their appearance. Eleanor states several times that he has red hair and hazel eyes. He mentions that she has blue eyes and that when he looked at here it was blue [eyes] on blue [eyes]. Leo states that Eleanor has dark hair but later described it as a soft brown.
I was excited to read this book but I was sadly disappointed it was a very slow start a lot of useless dialogue. The book jumps around a lot one minute she's naked and handcuffed to the wall and he walks out there's no explanation if he came back or if she got out of the Cuffs herself just to dead end. The next page they're in the car riding. Same old unrealistic lines and situations. He works her up and then walks away and tells her to beg for it. Hello in real life women don't beg particularly if it's a jerk. It's the men who do the begging. The albanians are so stupid they give her the address where they are holding her sister so she can trade herself for her sister. Why didn't she just give the address to the MMC. She's so stupid they could have kept both her and her sister but they let her sister go which makes them stupid too. You can only stretch reality so far. I'm sure it's very hard to write a book but if you're an author can't you come up with something new?
Okay a little cheat at the end of the year and keeping up with my reading challenge I grabbed the Rosetti brothers serie, with wicked lies as a start.
The story is old and predictable, especially being an avid dark romance reader. A few dislikes are the repetition omg over and over the room is filled with heat and smoke. And it’s not that the author is not capable of good writing, I mean one of the plus in this is that there were some real good poetic writing in this story. Which made me pick up the book, as it started very strong.
The spicy scenes were yeah spicey, but some were misplaced. I mean they just had sex then lay on the bed and yet again an extended spicey scene. With yet again the same elements.
I like reading character development, but this one felt a bit force, can’t place my finger on it.
Knowing dom is next, I will read the second. Also interesting choice of the author to not start with the oldest, the heir- that was the only surprising element in the story.
I’m not sure it was what I expected. Most of the story was told via thoughts inside the characters heads so there is rarely interactions with one another on page. Perhaps we are meant to believe that there are times they talk and begin to know one another that we do not see, but I missed those moments. I like seeing the characters soften to one another but that all is implied to happen off page. The side characters are barely on page as well so I’m not sure I’ve developed any feelings on any of them to know how the rest of the family’s books will go.
While I think the plot is good, and in general terms I like Eleanor and Leonardo, I have major issues with abusive sexual behaviour. Handcuffing a naked woman to a wall as punishment for ‘breaking the rules’ is unacceptable. That their relationship ’normalises’ is fantastic, but making Leonardo an over-controlling abuser is not, and I didn’t find it in keeping with his character, no matter how violent he is otherwise. Shame.
I’m kind o torn on how to say things without sounding snarky.. I did not know what to expect. I knew this was an earlier book but there were so many editing and typo mistakes that I would re red passages to make sure I got the correct context. The story was average, main characters did not seem developed but I stuck it out because I knew her more recent books were good.
