In a world increasingly bent on denying the existence of objective truths and morals, very few writers today possess the courage to challenge us—to deeply ponder, to question, to wonder. Enter Michael Hopkins. This collection engages readers on so many levels, offering realism, magic realism, science fiction, and micro-fiction to spur the reader to engage their deepest self. No matter the subgenre, the characters draw us in with their realness and the realness of their ethical conflicts and dilemmas, whether they are deciding the fate of an amputated limb, administering a deadly virus to reunite soulmates, or sitting in a corn field contemplating the murder of a best friend. If there is a right and wrong in the world, do the characters see it clearly and are they prepared to take ownership of their decisions? The relatability of Hopkins' characters draws us into their world no matter how otherworldly the setting. My only issue with the writer is this: how long must we wait before he releases another collection of tales?
Loved this book! Michael writes so creatively with many unexpected surprises along the way. His sense of humanity shines through, settling in to your soul as you read. I highly recommend this collection of great stories!
