From her hospital bed in New York City to Granny's house in Dahlia, South Carolina, the distance and differences seem overwhelming to protagonist Rebecca Chastain. Yet, this heart-throbbing novel unfolds gently, like a southern, summer day, capturing a pace in which moments last long enough to savor. Rarely does a debut novel flow as beautifully as "The Memory Garden." Not to say that life in small-town Dahlia is perfect. On the contrary, life and death struggles emerge quickly, drawing the reader into a story that's hard to set aside. Even after consuming the final page, this reader finds herself compelled to return to favorite chapters and linger, re-reading meaningful, heartfelt passages and thoughts well worth remembering.
