This is an excellent, beautiful, artistic and touching story about a mother and her child. It is a work of translation which was adapted to the Eritrean setting. It took place in the highland parts of Eritrea, roughly around the time Eritrea was colonized by Italy, UK and may also reach upto the early times of Ethiopian colonisation of Eritrea. With some hesitation I place it between the later part of the 19th century and the first half of the twentieth century.
It touches on many parts of the fabric of Eritrean society. It talks about religion, love, family, friendship, faithfulness, morality, and about ill-will of people and its consequences to society. You will glean a lot about monasteries and the day to day lives and routines of monks.
In addition to the main plot one of the most fascinating things I noticed was the large amount of folklore and traditional songs in the book. Even if do not read the whole book again I will surely go back to these part of the book to refresh my memory.
The writer adds a lot of short stories about animals and people which at times feel as if they're much more beyond what is needful. However you can observe each story is full of wisdom and truth.
This is an excellent book it must be read by everyone.
