Against All Odds

Rate this book
When my ex-husband leaves me for the co-star in his movie, moving back to Ember Falls feels like my only option.

Everett Finnegan, my first love and the man I’ve never forgotten, is ready to welcome me with open arms…and an open bed.

But when I find out I’m pregnant with my ex’s baby, my entire world is upended.

My ex doesn’t want the baby, but I plan to rebuild my life as a single mother and figure out how to handle all of this alone.

Except that I don’t seem to be alone―Everett always shows up for me.

I don’t expect him to get mixed up in all my drama―not when he has his own. And I wish he would listen to me when I say we have to stop whatever it is we’re doing.

But he wants me, the baby, and my heart.

So when I’m forced to return to California sooner than planned, I’m devastated.

Everett can’t leave Ember Falls, and I can’t stay.

Saying goodbye to him the first time was hard enough. This time, it just might break me

4-4.5⭐️ It is always a pleasure to visit Ember Falls, this time from the perspective of Violet as she returns to her hometown and the boy and life she left behind. While filled with steamy fun, this story is also deeply rooted in raw emotion— the deep pain of being a caregiver for a parent following an accident, and the heartbreak that follows public infidelity. CM perfectly juxtaposes the bitter with the sweet, making this story a standout in the series.

I must admit I’m never sure about accidental pregnancies, but this twist on the trope, an accidental pregnancy that is not our MMCs, made it feel more unique. The selfless love Everett shows to Violet by embracing her pregnancy wholeheartedly offered us the subtle swoon many recent romances have been lacking. While we of course get our happy ending, Michaels roots it in the real rough and tumble of every day life, making it that much more heartwarming.

🎧 The audio is fantastic thanks to the narration of Andi Arndt and Robert Hatchet, who bring the heart and humor to Violet and Everett, as well as many of our other Ember Falls faves.

Corinne sure can write a hero. Everett Finnegan is one of her best. Against All Odds is a beautiful second chance romance between Violet and Everett.

Violet needs a fresh start back to the one place she’s always felt comfortable in. Ember Falls. Where her first love, Everett still lives. And is her neighbor. Everett is wonderful. Seriously, he couldn't be better for Violet. I adored them together. This was another great addition to this series!

When the heroine gets pregnant by someone who is not the hero, you know you are in for an extra special but bumpy ride. Yet, somehow, Corinne Michaels made this an absolutely sweet second chance romance that had me swooning all along the way. It was just beautiful.

I felt so much for both of these characters and I was so happy they gave love another go. They were living half lives before and now they can be whole again.

Duet narration by Robert Hachet and Andi Arndt, made for an excellent experience.

3 on the spice scale

CW: cheating (not by MCs), gas-lighting ex, caretaking of an ill parent.

after loving here and now i was highly anticipating the next book in the ember falls series and wasn't disappointed!! this has all the vibes and feelings you want in a second chance romance 🥹💗

there was love and joy potrayed in this story as reuniting with a past lover but also pain for all the years spent apart and the little and not so little things they missed out from being out of each others lives.

this is my second book by the author and certainly not my last, cannot wait for book 4 in this series and in the meantime i'll have to go back and read book 1!!

i recommend this to lovers of second chance and if you're okay with the pregnancy trope!! a mmc who cant help but be concerned and wanting to help his first love??

SPICE: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I have a new favorite Corinne Micheals book and Im not mad about it. Look, I have had the same favorite book if Corinne's for going on two years, but not even 30% into this book Everett and Violet stole my heart and I'm never getting it back

Seriously one of the best "not his baby" accidental pregnancy books I have ever read. It was absolutely fantastic.

✨ Small Town
✨ Accidental Pregnancy "nor his baby"
✨ Second Chance
✨ Neighbors to Lovers
✨ Its Always been you

I find myself loving ember falls more and more with each book I read, and I don't even know how that is possible since I love them all. but there is just something special about Violet and Everett.

I don't know if its the second chance that hits so hard, the way that these two loved each other, or the way that they fought their way to find happiness, but I found myself tearing up at how perfect they were.

Violet is back in the only place that feels like home, Everett has been stuck in a rut caring for his mother, and when they reunite after years apart, that spark tying them together just burns so bright.

Everrett has always been the goofy friend, but there was so much more to him. And when he finds out Vi is pregnant via her terrible ex husband, he doesn't hesitate to step in and love them both.

also if you have ever had to care for a sick parent, grab some tissues because this one is going to resonate and get your emotions.

this was one of Corinne's best books and a top read of the year for me.

4.5 Stars | A Beautiful Second-Chance Romance That Hit All the Right Notes

I have to start by saying that Ember Falls feels like a place I’d love to visit in real life. It’s cozy, welcoming, and full of charm. You can almost picture yourself walking the streets or stopping into one of the local spots.

There’s something so swoony about a man who never forgets his first love. Everett is that man. He holds on to his feelings for Violet through the years, and when they finally reconnect, it’s clear he never truly let her go. He’s thoughtful and patient, not just with her but also with his mother, who is struggling with memory loss. I loved that Everett could be gentle and nurturing while still having a sarcastic edge when joking with his friends. And when it comes to the spice? He brings the heat. Even more importantly, he’s respectful. He won’t make a move unless he knows Violet wants it too. A man who asks for permission? Yes, please.

Violet is a woman picking up the pieces after a toxic marriage. She returns to Ember Falls looking for a safe place to land, and watching her rebuild her life was so satisfying. I especially admired how she stood up for herself and set clear boundaries with her ex.

Their relationship felt inevitable, and watching them shift from old friends into something more was one of my favorite parts of the book. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and the slow burn was so worth it. You could feel the connection grow stronger with every chapter.

The supporting characters were just as enjoyable. They added a real sense of community and warmth, the kind that only small towns seem to have. Yes, everyone knows your business, but they also show up when it matters most.

This series is definitely one to keep an eye on. If you haven’t started it yet, I highly recommend diving in. It’s heartfelt, emotional, and full of the kind of love story that stays with you long after the final page.

Second-chance romances aren’t usually my go-to, but if there’s a right way to write one, Corinne Michaels absolutely nailed it!

Violet was married to her college boyfriend, who’s now a famous movie star. It was never the life she wanted, but she stood by him until he cheated on her with his co-star. Needing to escape the paparazzi storm, Violet heads back to her hometown… where her high school sweetheart still lives.

Everett isn’t prepared to see Violet again after all these years. She’s always been the love of his life. Years ago, he gave up a promising baseball career to stay home, become a vet, and care for his mother after a tragic car accident that also took his father’s life.

Everett is 1000% book boyfriend material. The swoony moments, the grand gestures. My heart was melting for him. And then comes the twist: Violet finds out she’s pregnant… with her soon-to-be ex-husband’s baby. You’d think that would scare Everett away, right? But no, this man is in it for the long haul. He’s there for her, for the baby, for all of it.

The banter was spot-on, the spice hit just right, and the emotional connection between Violet and Everett was absolutely beautiful. I adored this book, and this series is quickly becoming one of my favorites!

Against All Odds is one of those stories that could be filled with drama but instead we get an amazing new book boyfriend to add to the list!

Everett and Violet have a second chance story that is a must read. Violet is returning to Ember Falls to get away from her ex. Everett wants to rekindle what they once had and then enter a baby that's not his. From here he just got better and better. Violet was in an incredibly tough spot and he did and gave exactly what was needed! Loved them together!

Amazing audio performed by Andi Arndt & Robert Hatchett!

second chance x first love x hurt/comfort

It’s official - I’m obsessed with this series. Every single book is so good and gets me right in the heart. I’ve always loved a second chance romance but this really is the “it was always you” love.

Read this if you’re in the mood for…
- second chance
- first love
- hurt/comfort
- it was always you
- found family
- banter

This was SO SWEET! They are so gentle with each other and I love the way Corinne wrote a real love with honest conversations and worries. The found family friendships in this series continue to grow in the best way and I can’t wait for the next one.

I will be recommending!!

Oh my heart, this is such a gorgeous read! A swoony second chance romance with a surprise pregnancy twist, it’s the third book in the Ember Falls series, and I loved it.

Everett and Violet met as teenagers when she spent summer holidays with her Grandmother in his small home town of Ember Falls. Year after year they spent their summers together and eventually fell in love, but their lives went in different directions. Fifteen years later, Everett is the vet in his home town, and Violet is in the middle of a divorce from her movie star husband. She’s desperate to escape LA and find some peace so she returns to her grandmother’s house, which has been left to her, and is surprised to find Everett still living next door.

From the moment these two see each other, you can see the emotion is still very much there. They’ve never forgotten about each other and as they start to spend time together, they quickly find all of those feelings coming back.

“I lost you fifteen years ago and I’m still not able to date anyone else.” .. “You’re not a girl that someone could just walk away from.”

It’s easy and natural, and I loved watching these two fall back into each other. The chemistry is there, the flirting is fun, and the sexual tension is fantastic, and Everett doesn’t hold back when it comes to sharing his feelings.

“We’re not friends. We were never friends and we’re never going to be just friends.” He leans in, and I think he’s going to kiss me. I wait on bated breath, desperate for it, but he moves to my ear. “Call me whatever you want, Vi. Call me your lover, the man you want to forget, the man you pretend you don’t wait at windows for. Just don’t ever call me your fucking friend. We both know it’s a lie. We’re more, so much more.”

Emmett stole my heart as a man desperate to win back the love of his life. He is sweet, kind, thoughtful and romantic, so sexy and super swoony, and all the things that dreamy romance heroes are meant to be. I sat down to write this review and was going through my quotes, and they are all Everett’s swoony thoughts and declarations, and oh, how I loved it.

“I’ve been living in this version of purgatory since the day you left me. I’ve never moved on from you, Violet. Having you back in my life has made me feel free again. I waited for you, without even knowing I was doing it … There is nothing I fear about this relationship other than not being in it. So, let me shoulder the hard times and be by your side for the good. Let me have whatever days we can have together because I can’t go back to a world where I don’t have any.”

Their situation is complicated when Violet discovers that she’s pregnant by her ex-husband. Plot twist! Everett is pure perfection of course, but drama comes when they realise that Violet may not be able to stay in Ember Falls and our two lovers are faced with separation once again. It does get dramatic, but this book is angst-free with no third-act breakup, and I loved watching these two work through it all to get their happy ending.

The characters from previous books all appear, and I loved seeing them both support and tease Everett, and welcome Violet into the fold. This is a great bunch of characters with a fun dynamic, and sweet, sexy and easy romances. I’m loving this series.

4 stars.

Corinne Michaels does an amazing job writing second chance romances! Everett & Violet were childhood sweethearts and have messy history! She left and now she is back in Ember Falls after finding out she was cheated on and needed to be back in her home town. She was scared to run into Everett and face him after all of these years. However, Everett will do everything in his power to get back the love of his life and never let her go!

I really loved the way they reconnected and Everett is DOWN bad for Violet. The acts of service had me SWOONING over him! She ends up getting pregnant by her ass of a ex-husband and the way Everett stepped up and wanted this baby and wants to be the father had me melting.

The audiobook was perfect!! Robert Hatchet & Andi Arndt did an amazing job bringing these characters to life! I really loved the duet! I highly recommend the audio!! So so good!

I don’t recall if it was 15 years later but it doesn’t matter, what matters is that Everett was still a complete lovesick boy for Violet even after years later. It was so unrealistic the way he was for her and cringey that I couldn’t continue this. I loved book 1 but this didn’t work for me.

✨️ ARC 📖 / ALC 🎧 REVIEW ✨️

🎙Narrated by: Andi Arndt & Robert Hatchett🎙

Andi and Robert did an amazing job with Violet and Robert! I truly loved hearing them come to life before my ears! Andi gave Violet so much more than a voice. She gave so many other women voices throughout this book and I loved her renditions of what the other characters would be like!

Robert couldn't have been more perfect for Everett! He has the perfect pitch and tone to his voice that can be so versatile! He could be soothing, loving but also the authoritative figure in no time! He was perfect through this whole audio! So much so that I am finding everything else he has voiced ☺️.

Violet 💜 and Everett were the perfect example of the one that got away while still being right person, but wrong time! I loved these two soo much 🥰. I couldn't imagine what could have been different! I felt for 💜 Violet through a good portion of this book! She truly weathered the storm ⛈️ with the help of her found family. The ones she never knew she truly had in her corner. I was so giddy that Everett was quick to show her what she has there in Ember Falls. Not just him, but a whole family that was more than happy to welcome her back into their town and lives. I especially loved that her bestie flew 🛩 down to check on her after she didn't answer her phone. With her being there to check on 💜 Violet she was able to see where she had made her new home. She could see that she wasn't alone and destitute!

Everett said he would do anything to keep her from leaving again and that he did! He was such a great person in general but he truly loved her ❤️. His feelings when she came back only grew 10 fold. He knew what he was getting into and hadn't questioned it once because he knew where he stood in everything. He was there for 💜 Violet and not anyone else. He was committed before she ever found out about the baby. He didn't care what or who the baby's daddy was. He wanted to help raise the baby as his own like his adoptive parents did for him! Who wouldn't swoon 🥰 at that? He had the purest of intentions and kept his word!

I loved 😍 that Everett took her on calls with him so she could see his life and job. Truly see what its like for him to be around livestock and animals day in and day out. Of course she fell in love ❤️ with a goat 🐐! They are sooo funny but also menace 😂.

That epilogue couldn't have been more perfect!! I need a book 2 of these characters 😩! But that's okay. I'm excited to see about our next couple!

If you’re a fan of second chance romance (like me!), Against All Odds is such a satisfying read.

Everett and Violet’s story completely hooked me — there’s something about the way they reconnect that feels both emotional and deeply earned. I loved the small-town setting, the familiar faces, and the way that coming back to the past brought out so much vulnerability in both of them.

Everett was honestly one of my absolute favourite parts of this book. He’s the funny one in the group — that charming, light-hearted guy who always makes people laugh — but underneath that is so much care, loyalty, and genuine love. He’s sweet, thoughtful, and completely unafraid to take responsibility and show up for Violet, especially when it truly matters. Total softie, and I adored him for it.

And Violet? She’s incredibly strong. The way she faces life’s challenges head-on, even when things get messy or painful, made me root for her from start to finish. She’s not perfect — no one is — but her resilience and quiet strength were so inspiring.

Their connection was beautiful. Deep, real, and full of tension that never felt forced. The emotional weight of Everett’s background added even more depth, and seeing how they both brought their histories into the present made their relationship feel layered and honest.

This isn’t just a sweet romance — it’s one that digs into real emotions, second chances, and what it means to fight for the love you once lost.

Everett and Violet have my whole heart!! I loved everything about their epic second chance romance! I just loved being back in the charming small town of Ember Falls with these wonderful characters! Against All Odds was a deeply emotional, heartfelt, and romantic story. There is always something so special about childhood sweethearts who find their way back to each other! I loved watching them reconnect after years apart. From the moment they see each other again they couldn’t deny that their chemistry was still there. When I say Everett is a top tier boyfriend, I mean it! The way he loved and cared for Violet was EVERYTHING!

Robert Hatchet and Andi Arndt perform Against All Odds in duet narration. Their performances had me crying, smiling and blushing. They were the perfect choice to bring this epic love story to life!

this was so good. so, so, so, so good! i love me a second chance romance and corinne is an author that writes them so freaking well! obsessed. couldn’t get enough. i was hooked right from the start.

violet and everett were everything. if any two people were meant to be it was them. they share history since they dated in the past and once violet returns to ember falls its game over. everett never forgot about violet or what they shared, she was it for him. watching violet and everett come together like no time had past was exhilarating. all those feelings they once had are still there tenfold. their chemistry was fiery and their connection was unbreakable. violet and everett’s second chance was outstanding, the way they navigated through their feelings and everything else was simply incredible. and it goes without saying that everett was the ultimate. the way he loved and cared for violet was *chef’s kiss* loved them so much.

against all odds was another amazing edition to the ember falls series. heartfelt, heartwarming, and packed with all the emotions. i love this series and i love these characters, and especially love the friendships. also, the audio was superb! Andi Arndt and Robert Hatchet’s performances were spectacular, the listening experience was amazing.

I am a huge fan of Corinne’s books and Ember Falls has yet to let me down! This series has been a top fav for me and I can’t wait to see where we keep going!

This book is Everett and Violets story. These two had one heck of a past and their current lives were messy and full of sticky situations. Both ending back up in Ember Falls again, and as next door neighbors was not on either of these twos Bingo Card. Watching this second chance happen for these two was just such a ride. The push and pull for these two gah!! Freaking perfection!

Everett is the local down veterinarian, and is taking care of his mom, living out his days on wash rinse and repeat, until one day on his very routine coffee stop he bumps into the one woman who can bring all his meticulous plans to crumbles. Violet Stewart is a force to be reckoned with, she is the one that got away, and she is the woman who has the ability to make Everett fall to his knees. Showing Violet that she should be worshiped and cherished in every way is Everett’s soul focus. Showing her everything life has to offer her and that she is deserving of that.

Even with all the surprises that come these twos way (surprise baby) they manage to take on each road bump and make the best of their tomorrow. Because there will be a tomorrow together.

When Violet discovers her husband is cheating, she knows she needs a fresh start, leading her to the quiet town of Ember Falls. There, she unexpectedly crosses paths with her first love, Everett. The spark between them reignites instantly, their chemistry undeniable. Just as their connection deepens, Violet learns she's pregnant with her ex's child. Now, she and Everett must navigate what this revelation means for their rekindled romance and uncertain future.

Robert Hatchet and Andi Arndt beautifully capture the tenderness between Violet and Everett. Their performances bring the characters’ deep affection and emotional journey to life with heartfelt authenticity.

Back in Ember Falls for the third book in this series!! Here's what you can expect...

• Second Chance
• Small Town
• Not his baby
• Neighbors
• It's always been her

I loved going back to this small town. Everett was so fun and so swoony. I loved how he took care of Violet. I was so happy to follow Violet as she found her HEA... especially with how her awful her ex was! It made their story even more beautiful.

This series is everything I want in small town romance. It's a great mix of romance and family, with some great humor and levity thrown in. I'm excited for more of this series! (Though I will riot if Hazel doesn't get her own book)

Omg I needed this!! There’s something about second chance romances that are so beautiful. This trope is quickly becoming one of my favorites! Everett has never stopped loving Violet so when she moves back to Ember Falls he has the chance to reconnect with the woman who broken his heart and he never got over.

I absolutely love how Corinne Michaels can always find the beauty in a messy situation and have her characters express real emotions and reactions to situations. I absolutely love the Hallmark small town sweetness in books but Corinne takes the sweet stories and adds a dose of realism. Real life isn’t perfect, it’s messy, emotional, and hard but her stories are so real and refreshing.

My heart absolutely ached for Everett and his mother. Sometimes tragedy isn’t just in the people you lose but the people that stay. Thank you for writing stories that people can relate to Corinne Michaels!

I also couldn’t get over the little cameos. If you read this make sure to come back and let me know if you spotted them 🥰

What to Expect:
- Small Town
- Childhood Sweethearts
- Neighbors to Lovers
- Forced Proximity
- Second Chance
- Right Person, Wrong Time
- She's Pregnant (it's not his)
- Acts of Service
- Dual POV
- Duet Narration

I am so happy to be back in Ember Falls, and this is the story I needed! There is absolutely nothing better than a well-written second-chance romance. Violet and Everett were childhood sweethearts until Violet left it all behind. Although she never stopped thinking about Everett, Violet moved on and started a life with someone else. Years later, after her broken marriage ends, Violet finds herself back in Ember Falls to start fresh, and face to face with the man her heart never let go.

I adored Violet and Everett. Everett is the best of everything! He is compassionate, thoughtful, and loves hard. Although Violet broke his heart when she left, his love for her never wavered. Violet was hesitant to move forward, but I loved witnessing her grow and find the strength to trust Everett with her heart and believe in love again. Violet and Everett's journey back to each other was beautiful, honest, emotional, and will tug on your heartstrings. I love this series and can't wait for what comes next for the Ember Falls crew.

Narration:
Andi Arndt and Robert Hatchet performed this audiobook in duet, and they truly DELIVERED! I love them as a narrating duo and need more! Andi and Robert were the perfect voices for Violet and Everett, and made these characters come alive for me. This was a top-tier performance, and I felt every single emotion.

Thanks to Corinne Michaels and Lyric Audiobooks for the early review opportunity. Opinions expressed are my own.

someone told me this was their favorite Corinne Michaels book ever written..
((I would like to start this review with the fact I have read every book, multiple times so my opinion should be considered valued at this point))

Against All Odds by Corinne Michaels is in the top 5 of all the books she has written.. it is such a perfect second chance.. She didn't make us question the main characters motives. They both wanted each other, they knew they were always meant to be, and I love that in a second chance.
Its almost like you know that other person completes you, and now you're going to fight to the death to keep them.

& does Everrett fight like nobody's freaking business. He hasn't moved on in all the years- theres no way he could now with Violet back in town.. She has moved into the house next door and theres just no turning back.

this man is an ACTS OF SERVICE MAN. In all aspects. he is quite literally the best book boyfriend..
& that is all I have to say, because there are no other words that would do this book justice.

ITS. JUST. THAT. GOOD.

Thank you so much to Corinne eARC AND ALC

I am so happy that we are back in Ember Falls! This story follows Everette and Violet, who are childhood sweethearts. Violet left town but they both never stopped thinking about each other. After a scandal in Violet's present life, she returns home where she runs back into Everette.

I just LOVE a second chance romance story— especially one like theirs that’s a right person, wrong time situation. I loved getting to watch their relationship grow into something stronger than it once was.

🎧 The duet narration by Andi Arndt and Robert Hatchet was incredible! They were perfect for Violet and Everette and truly brought their characters to life.

Tropes:
❤️ Second Chance Romance
❤️ Not His Baby
❤️ Small Town
❤️ Acts of Service
❤️ Found Family
❤️ Right Person, Wrong Time

Against All Odds had me in my feelings the whole way through. Violet’s life completely falls apart, and going back to Ember Falls feels like the only thing she can do. She’s not expecting Everett, her first love, to still be there. And she definitely isn’t expecting him to still care.

Everett is the kind of grumpy, quietly loyal man who just gets under your skin. His inner thoughts made me laugh, but it’s the way he takes care of Violet that really got me. He doesn’t make big declarations, he just shows up, again and again, even when things are messy. He really said, “I’ve got you,” without ever needing to say the words. (Although, when he does say it? 🥹😍)

Violet’s been through it. She gave up so much for her marriage, and now she’s stuck picking up the pieces and figuring out what her life looks like on her own. Her journey felt so honest and heartbreaking at times, but also full of strength. And watching her start to believe in herself again? Worth it!

Ana, her best friend, might be one of my favorite parts of this book. She’s hilarious, protective, and just absolutely ride-or-die. Every scene with her made me smile. Everyone needs a friend like Ana in their corner. Seriously, she was bestie goals!

The small town setting felt cozy and chaotic in the best way (the paint store old men were hilarious ), and the story had this soft undertone of healing and hope, even when things were heavy. Everett’s family stuff especially tugged at my heart. His mom made me cry more than once 😭

This isn’t a flashy story. It’s emotional in a quiet, real way. It’s about choosing love even when it’s complicated, showing up even when it’s hard, and finding your way back to someone when the timing never seems quite right. If you love emotional reads with soft heroes, strong friendships, and slow-burn second chances, definitely pick this one up.
