Whether they wore white stockings or blue helmets, the baseball players of Chicago’s North Side have always had great stories to tell. Now fans of this loveable franchise will finally get to hear from twenty-eight of the best players as they relive that singular moment which defined their Cubs career. In this newly updated edition of Game of My Life Chicago Cubs, veteran sportswriter Lew Freedman brings readers off the bench and onto the field with such greats as Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, and more.
Book Review of Game of my Life by Lew Freedman. Lew Freeman pitches us 29 miniature biographies of the most famous of Chicago Cubs along the years, ranging from Andy Pafko in 1921 to Kerry Wood in 2003. The Chicago Cubs, a baseball franchise based in Chicago ever since 1874 are most famous for their championship drought. 108 years since they’ve last brought home the gold, back in 1908. Keep in mind none of these players have won a World Series (at least with the Cubs). What I find most amusing about this book is each chapter is organized in the same fashion. “The early life of…”, “The Game of my Life”, “Game Results”, and “Reflecting on baseball”. And each “Game of my Life” is actually written by the former player himself. Each biography spans out their life from when they were a kid to what they’re doing or have done in retirement. I don’t think Lew Freedman could’ve put together this masterpiece any better. It really taught me and will teach you the story of these men’s lives and their impacts on the Cubs throughout an almost century. But although this may just be a combination of biographies from men of the same Baseball Club, there’s a deeper message wedged in between every thin piece of timber. And that is that the Cubs are the most lovable team in baseball, have the best park in baseball, and have the richest history in baseball. Although they haven’t even been to a World Series since the end of WW2, there’s hope all around, including the hope of the players of this book, the managers, the fans of both the past and present, and if we hope that the Cubs will break their curse, one day they will. Being a die-hard Cubs fan, I love this book. If you’re a Cubs fan, you need to read this book to get a broader understanding of the Cubs’ most memorable players of their franchise history. Then you’ll truly be a fan not just of the team right now, but the combination of Cubs generations that go way back. This book is a definite 5/5 because I learned a lot about something I’m passionate about, the Cubs, and I feel only Cubs fans would have an appreciation for this fine piece of literature, if you’re a fan of another sports team, you won’t have appreciation for this book, although Game of my Life is a series and is written for many other Sports Franchises.
